Hi,

Addendum - I'm only asking about this here because I haven't been given a manual. I'm also fairly sure the heads are shot, or at least grossly clogged, which I can do something about.

Thanks for any input.

Hi,

I'm in temporary posession of a PVW-2800P, and it's doing something I don't understand.

This problem looks like a sync problem, with the incoming signal. While the TCR display is in the right place (ruling out a monitor sync issue) the image behind it, including VITC that the 2800 is generating, is out of vertical lock.

Further, a blue line extending most of the way across the display, is visible between the top of the VITC and the bottom of the picture, visible above it.

The machine also occasionally complains "ERROR 02 - REEL TROUBLE 002", often when rewinding to the start of the tape using the shuttle dial.

Does the blue line mean anything, and can anyone suggest a fix for the situation?

All BVW 70 /75s i know of are older then 8 years and have been used on a daily basis so 4000 hrs of use is about regalur. Most companies using these machine have done headdrum replacements and mechanics service as adviced by sony. Most of the BVW 70 /75s have been replaced by Digital Betacam and Beta SX systems due to many broadcasters getting digital discbased broadcast servers and digital NLE's. Their asking price for BVW's can be an amazing $2500 or even more then $7000 depending on service state, age and ofcourse the managment of the guys you're buying it from. State owned national broadcasters are tend to sell these machine at lower prices then commercial broadcast facilities companies

Hi,

Thanks for the info. I've been told to check if the '35 will regenerate timecode and insert edit. I'm probably not worried by either function, but I want to be armed with all the info I can get. Decent performance when shuttling up and down IS important, so an edit capable deck would seem sensible.

So, a deck would actually do 4000 hours and still be worth buying if it had been used for straight playback?

Also, slight confusion: BVW would be a broadcast deck, UVW would be industrial. Is this necessarily a problem? I was told to check "if it allows full range Beta SP singals or it cuts them down a la UVW1800 ". So the 1800 might not be right. Presume this is the difference between a "UVW" and a "BVW".

As you can probably gather, this is my first real broadcast toy - I've been Mr. MiniDV thus far.

Thanks again,

Phil

Well a BVW 35 would do o.k. If you are willing to sacrifice 2 audio channels you could try and get a UVW1800P instead, wich works great with NLE's and RS422... A lot of hours depends on the what the machine is used for 4000 hours on a machine wich just does playback all the times is less of an impact then a machine with a 1200 hours of frame accurating editing. As for head replacements/ machine servicing you might want to check out kgc in germany at http://www.kgc.de they service betacam decks at reasonable prices.

Hi,

It's becoming obvious that I need Beta SP facilities in my mainly DV-based suite. I was considering the BVW-35, which LRC inform me goes for around £1500-1600. Can anyone comment on this machine, and whethere I'm shooting myself in the foot by not buying a more capable model? I'd really only be using it to get material onto the NLE or another more accessible format. Is there anything to watch out for when buying this machine used, how many hours is "lots", and how much do replacement heads cost?

Yep thats right, if you use the Avid Composer with the Reality Engine from Symbol just jump into the menu "bounce" -> film/24fr -> (FILM TYPE) -> compression(qaulity) and give the system the film name for the bounced file or bounce it directly to a film printer. The reality engine automaticly adjusts colour balances, video to film frame doubling etc etc.... And I personally think that DVCPRO 50 is better for film then Betacam SP, also DV 25 can be very good, but much DV chipsets and lenses are crap. The Ikky HL-V77 i mentioned is good, as the sony 500 and also the new JVC machine wich has half inch FIT CCDs

Re: fimic look

Of course, a more filmic look can be applied by field-doubling. As Walter mentioned, PAL runs on 25 Frames Per-Second, but it utilises 50 Fields of video in this time. Duplicating alternate fields all of a sudden takes the harsh video-look away from your footage. Most DVE's (and probably most NLE's) will allow you to do this. Or if you have DT VTR's you can do it the old fashioned way...

Of course, you still need to shoot it film style to get the best results. I'd always choose SP over (pro) DV for something like this - mainly because of lense optics. As also mentioned, keep an eye on your contrast, as the limited video level range of video is a dead giveaway.

Not only does PAL have more resolution then NTSC also it's framerate is at 25 fps. Being only 4% away from the SMPTE 24 fps standard. DV is becoming populair. Since most DV camcorders have a amateur lens on them there unusbale for film. I know of a lens ring for the well known and widly used Canon XL-1 to mount 16mm lenses and filters on it. Making it a good low budget digital film camera. Also a more professional machine such as a DSR-500P or a HL-V77 can give excellent digital film like preformance with the right lens. Also "moulding" colour scales and light effects when editing provides a way better film look for video material. Be sure not to amp the CCD section above 0db or exceed it's low level (picture noise level!). Picture noise can be removed on an avid, but it also narrows down your colour spectrum

Need some advice from other pro's. I want to shoot a feature and haveit "filmlooked". I've been told that PAL is inherently a sharper image that NTSC (100 lines or so), and wanted to use that over DV. I've been editing dv for a while already. No matter what dv camera that footage is shot with, it resolves at 500 lines, right? But Ihear a lot of you say you'd use it over Beta PAL? Really?...Seems to me it's bigger bandwidth AND 250 more broadcast lines.

Hallo Kollegen ,

There's a very simple way to get a BVW75 to run at DT speeds, with a TTL (transistor to transitor, all pins adressedm with no crossings) logic control cable from a 9 pin RS 232 to the RS 422 in,you can adress DT commands. Programms to do so can be found at tucows and are free of charge. The search dial on a BVW 75 from the latest revision can also search at DT speeds (The pot meters on them are the same as the ones on the digital decks)

I want to use a BVW75P or a PVW2800 to play back at various speeds. I am currently (as I type!) playing with a BVW75 but the control available to the 'stand alone' machine only gives me the preset 0.03, 0.1, 0.5, 1 & 2x speed options. As I don't want to go to the expense of hiring in an edit controller, is there any other method of accessing the ability to program the machine with more precise percentage settings?

Any help or advice appreciated.

If anyone has these boards (working or not)kicking around in a cupboard i am interested. Machines after serial no:12548 were fitted with a TBC-12 board (so an SDI output kit could be fitted), the DEC-20 board was also updated to a DEC-46 after serial no:11928. If anyone has updated a machine and still has the earlier boards kicking around-i am interested. Many thanks-James.

Ahh the BVW drummount inside a PVW backend machine! nice one!!Sony used the same drummounts in the earliest models of NTSC PVV3s as in the BVVs, as the UVW series 1200/1400 came along Sony saw a production cost save by installing a 1200/1400 drummount with a less expensive recording head ( UVW1400 ). Altough it's a never confirmed rumour i do believe that its true. The even later PVV has the same head as the UVW100. From 1995 and on, the BVW production numbers where also minimized, to boost the sale of digital betacam.

Hi Bede,I can't help you but I am interested in this company. Can you tell me where I can find them? Do they have a website? I am afraid that in the near future I need to replace a few upper drums in my edit suite. So this DRS company sounds like an interesting alternative.I hope that this isn't the only response you get.

Just wondering if anyone has any anecdotal information regarding the DRS Technologies refurbished/reconditioned upper head drums. I'm looking at the options for my BVW-300P camcorder.

They promise the world....but then again, they would, wouldn't they. Their pricing is pretty sharp and they also claim longer head life from their products. So what's the story????

Thanks,Bede

Does any one out there know of a listserv strictly for technical side of video. We are a service organisation in Glendale, CA USA and are looking for a forum for technical issues of betacam and other video and audio related issues. Since I am on the subject, what is your experience with betacam reel height problems? Namely, new machines having reel heights of 2.5mm or so vs. the SMPTE standard or what tends to be the norm about 2.2mm.Great job on the site. Thanks

Merijn,

I know of this program wich can give RS 422 and RS 424/A output commands via a normal RS 232 port. The big difference in the singals from RS 232 and the RS 422 and RS 424/A is the bit rate, i dont know for sure if its 9600 baud or 4800 baud. The RS 424/A 25 pin version works the same as the 9 pin RS 422. The program is called desktrol and made by a company called softeo from ohio in the states. I don't have it anymore (wich i think s*cks), also Pro Tools from Digidesign can control 9 pin machines (for audio inserts etc) from a com port

question;

Wich I think Walter knows the answer...

Is there anyway to convert the RS422 to RS232 so I can use Avid PC LOG on my laptop? Maybe there's another option? Actually I don't wanna spend much money on this. It's for the UVW series, DSR 40, the BVW75 and a DVW500. I know all of these are RS422 except the DSR20... Too bad we're not using this...

Hello all,

Desperate help needed here.

I have been bequethed a broken CEL P147.30 Digital Frame Store andTBC. The PSU has gone but I can fix that no problem, I'll can also offer help to anyone with problems in electronics.

I would like access to the technical manual that will allow me to ascertain how to control the P147.30 externally to make full use of th effects features. A photocopy of a manual would be great (expenses paid of course) or even some instructions, pin outs etc. I am a competant programmer, if I fix a solution I will share with all other users. I would really like to control it via my laptop so I need pinouts, and function descriptions.

Any help appreciated,

Cheers,

John.

Hi,

OK, not strictly a Beta Question, but it's for a BetaSP suite!

Can I get the BKE913 to emulate the BKE912?

Basically, I have a BKE913 (designed to control Sony DME/DFS series switchers) mounted in a BVE900, but now need to control a GVG100 (BKE912 territory).

Obviously it would be nice if I could get the 913 to work without hunting down a new 912!

Regards,

JON
