How do I create a Betacam tape from a demonstration running on a PC. Can I output with software directly to a tape or do I need a special program. What if I have the demonstration as an AVI file? Any links to websites that discuss this subject would be appreciated.

Try to insert the 4 channels all at once via the DUB plug. Special Pro tools and AES/EBU converters to analog Beta SP BVW machines can be rented. Why not work the entire project in a rented facility and dub to DVCPRO or Beta SX tape wich support simulations plackback of channels 1,2,3,4 at once. Also the 3&4 tracks can only be used for voice, since their bandwith is much smaller then 1&2...

Hello all,

Great site!

I have a problem that probably either has a simple solution or is impossible!

I have been editing with a BVW 50 (player) and a BVW 70 (rec) for years doing simple assemble edit 2 ch audio stuff. Now I have a project that requires 3 ch audio (1 for voice 2 for music) I am baffled to find that the BVW 70 only seems to output channels 1&2 OR channels 3&4 not all four at once. If I lay down the music on channels 1&2 channel 1 is overwritten when I insert the audio on channel 3. I have tried many combinations but one channel always seems to get overwritten when I put on the voice track. I must be doing something wrong!

I know I could probably get round it with an audio mixer, but it is just for this one project and I don't really want to buy a mixer for a 4 minute edit!

Any tips and tricks would be appreciated forever.

Thanks,

JJ

I know of a few scene files for the HL-45W and the new DVCPRO/DVCAM machines. Since i do not own a MMC card reader here is a short overview of settings used (On a HL-V79W): Film (whitelevel SMPTE standard), Film 2 (whitelevel IFC standard), ENG (ENG whitelevel, transpose and chromo synced to look like a BVW 400), EFP (The HL-V55 look), Drama (Orginal preset from the MMC slot on the HK-466s) and Walter (My own, calibrated to equal the Philips LDK150). I do now about these MMCs sold by dealers for use with digital film project, and the settings for SMPTE can be obtained from an SMPTE test card and an SMPTE test DVD (Audio + instructions)

I own an Ikkegami HL45 (not the HL45W ) And am looking for some scene files. I have a couple that I am willing to share although, the truth is that I haven't found any I like better than the factory setup.

I would like a "Sony Look" scene just to satisfy my over chroma-ed clients.

I have one called "hot rod" which is OK but not great. Redder reds and a little more chroma.

And one called "film look" which mostly is a little soft and slightly muted color saturation.

Using Final Cut Pro 2.0, Gport RS422 serial controller with composite input to offline with a PVW 2600p. after log & capture the burnt-in timecode is offset by sometimes 1 or 2 frames. But it is very inconsistant. Even after calibrating the timecode the captured video is offset.

There is no reference going in or out of the player. Is this a syncing issue & if so how do I get around it?

Hi,

Is anyone familiar with the DME450? I have just got a used one and am having a couple of minor problems;

I can't reverse the effect direction. The switch in the mainframe appears to do nothing - and the DME doesn't recognise adding + 3000 to the effect number.

The black level on the outgoing bus is slightly higher than the other bus, therefor when I line up the DME to do an effect after normal editing - I get a jump just cut before the effect. I have managed to drag the Video Level and Chroma level/phase to the corrct position, but am still getting high blacks and a slightly lower detail level.

Any help much appreciated.

That's a real neat price for a betacam machine. One last tip on the HC300 try to get a good lighting set. The HC300 is not that very good in low level light. A good HL-series machines goes for at least DM 20.000. The HC300 was marketed in 1994 as a machine for pro use (presentations, industrial, law enforcement) and for low end broadcasting (news, local tv, cable television etc). It's a good peace of hardware. I saw a few of these machines with PVV's and Hi8 dockables. The ZDF and ARD in Germany where very big fans of these machines, as i recall

The HC300 is a professional camera, and is useable for broadcast but i would not use it on pure broadcast work. It can be compared a bit to the BVW-300P but it is nowhere close to a good DSP cam. If you like ikegami (just as much as i do) you could best invest in a used HL-V55 or a BVV5P/HL-55 HL-57 or HL 59 combo. Especially the 59 is very usefull since it has a 10 bit noise reduction and good low lux pictures. All the HL-55 and up machines offer FIT ccd's, if you want something else instead of an ikky. You could try the BVW-400P, BVP-300P with BVV5 Hitachi Z-one-D (with BVV) or a Panasonic F-WV800 with a BVV5.

A IEE 1394 to component (or even DUB socket) is present on some models of Sony's new DSR-line. But then again who want's to spend money on those machines when you just need a converter. Norman Electronics from Canada builds a machine wich converts IEE 1394, SDI and the Panasonic D5 plug to a Betacam/M-II 3 BNC component connector. They sell just under a thousand dollars, have well shielded outputs and also convert audio, wich is outputted with XLRs. I do know that their's a NTSC/PAL switch on it, but i do not know anything on it's availability here in the EU. I saw it on a show once. norman.com is owned by company wich makes virusscanners... so i'm affraid it's going to be a search!

Well audio dubbing would go o.k. on a UVW1800P. With a small edit controller and (maybe) a capture board on your PC running Adobe premiere you can edit video on your PC. A decent editing set up would cost around $2500 for a good UVW1800, $1000 for a good captureboard (Miro DV500,DC1000 ,etc). When doing voice overs remember to have a good speach cell and use a good mic .One of those horrible Sennheiser MD421 won't do, try to get a capicitator mic such as a AKG C3000 or Sennheiser MKH series. For a complete working soundstudio ,with active monitors, broadcast qaulity 6 channel mixer, Optimod TV limiter/effector, digital PC(SPDIF) to XLR interface, and a capicitator mic) you will need around $4000 to 5000. Don't forget that most pro/broadcast soundcards need to have XLR out, since PCs have an enormous magnetic audio coupling function, try to keep the AD conversion outside (i.e. breakout box or a SPDIF/optical to XLR converter). Happy editing!

Hi,

That's a tricky chunk of electronics. You need a Magic Black Box, which is my designation for any item of equipment I don't know how to build, which does something useful. If you catch Computer Video magazine this month there's a MBB which will convert from component to 1394 digital video. Ideal for your application.

I don't think that Beta SP will die off the same way as the M-II format. Broadcasters are going digital rapidly because of the digital infrastructure found in modern studios (digital routers, digital NLE's, discbases broadcast servers, news room systems etc etc). Betacam SP however is still 1st choice for a lot of companies working in training, cable TV, low budget (local/regional/city) television. The M-II system lost the battle to SP, and where SP still holds 50% of the ENG camcorder enlistments, M-II just scores a bare 0,5%. In it's time Betacam SP had a market percentage of 85%, with M-II having 8% and Hi8 and U-matic SP both on the 3rd place with 3% and 1 inch on the 1% ... Since Low cost DVCPRO machines have been introduced Betacam is losing market value at an awesome rate. Does anyone else think Sony will "cutt-of" all analogue Betacam machines shortly?. As Panasonic did in 96 with all the M-II stuff

Hi,

Mr. Vanzetti: try the Lux Centre. They used to be the London filmmaker's co-op and offer good prices. Their phone number is 020 7684 0202. I've used them for dubs to NTSC, though always from DV.

Mr. Bower: Digital Betacam is... digital. 2:1 compressed (Sony call it "bitrate reduction" which sounds like compression to me). Current top toy. Beta SP is a composite analogue format. Going rapidly out of favour, I get the impression.

Will Beta SP go the way of MII?

When references are made to Betacam SP & Digital Betacam it makes it sound like Betacam SP is analogue & not digital. Is this the case?

Hi,

Addendum - I'm only asking about this here because I haven't been given a manual. I'm also fairly sure the heads are shot, or at least grossly clogged, which I can do something about.

Thanks for any input.

Hi,

I'm in temporary posession of a PVW-2800P, and it's doing something I don't understand.

This problem looks like a sync problem, with the incoming signal. While the TCR display is in the right place (ruling out a monitor sync issue) the image behind it, including VITC that the 2800 is generating, is out of vertical lock.

Further, a blue line extending most of the way across the display, is visible between the top of the VITC and the bottom of the picture, visible above it.

The machine also occasionally complains "ERROR 02 - REEL TROUBLE 002", often when rewinding to the start of the tape using the shuttle dial.

Does the blue line mean anything, and can anyone suggest a fix for the situation?

All BVW 70 /75s i know of are older then 8 years and have been used on a daily basis so 4000 hrs of use is about regalur. Most companies using these machine have done headdrum replacements and mechanics service as adviced by sony. Most of the BVW 70 /75s have been replaced by Digital Betacam and Beta SX systems due to many broadcasters getting digital discbased broadcast servers and digital NLE's. Their asking price for BVW's can be an amazing $2500 or even more then $7000 depending on service state, age and ofcourse the managment of the guys you're buying it from. State owned national broadcasters are tend to sell these machine at lower prices then commercial broadcast facilities companies

Hi,

Thanks for the info. I've been told to check if the '35 will regenerate timecode and insert edit. I'm probably not worried by either function, but I want to be armed with all the info I can get. Decent performance when shuttling up and down IS important, so an edit capable deck would seem sensible.

So, a deck would actually do 4000 hours and still be worth buying if it had been used for straight playback?

Also, slight confusion: BVW would be a broadcast deck, UVW would be industrial. Is this necessarily a problem? I was told to check "if it allows full range Beta SP singals or it cuts them down a la UVW1800 ". So the 1800 might not be right. Presume this is the difference between a "UVW" and a "BVW".

As you can probably gather, this is my first real broadcast toy - I've been Mr. MiniDV thus far.

Thanks again,

Phil

Hi,

Blast, I've just discovered that the BVW-35 has composite input only. This is no good - ideally I'd like S-video. What do I have to buy to get that?

Well a BVW 35 would do o.k. If you are willing to sacrifice 2 audio channels you could try and get a UVW1800P instead, wich works great with NLE's and RS422... A lot of hours depends on the what the machine is used for 4000 hours on a machine wich just does playback all the times is less of an impact then a machine with a 1200 hours of frame accurating editing. As for head replacements/ machine servicing you might want to check out kgc in germany at http://www.kgc.de they service betacam decks at reasonable prices.

Hi,

It's becoming obvious that I need Beta SP facilities in my mainly DV-based suite. I was considering the BVW-35, which LRC inform me goes for around £1500-1600. Can anyone comment on this machine, and whethere I'm shooting myself in the foot by not buying a more capable model? I'd really only be using it to get material onto the NLE or another more accessible format. Is there anything to watch out for when buying this machine used, how many hours is "lots", and how much do replacement heads cost?
