I have a Sony Beta tape (NOT Betacam) on which there is about 5 minutes of my wedding, copied in 1978 from my 8mm cine camera. My Beta video player died years ago & I defected to VHS. I would like to copy my wedding onto a VHS tape. Can anyone help me, or direct me somewhere? I know there are commercial transfer companies, but the content/quality of the tape does not justify that sort of spending.

I am about to open up a BVV 5 that I bought on ebay to clean away its glitchy picture and try a few things to waste time and prove I am a dork.1.New line in audio that bypasses micpreamp and bogus "line" attenuator2.Adjust the AFM pots so it has the same headroom "0vu" as the line tracks3.Optimize battery warning shut off levels4.some kind of playback tap5.Yuvsync outs

1.there are test points and a Pcboard to pcboard jumper point that make the line in pretty easy it seems. One test specs is at at 4db for a mic in at -30 tone, a -5db spec for a 4db tone input with line attenuator. The mackie outs are 0 and +4 so one of them should be bout right.(page 10-3 in manual) If 4db is 1.23 volts rms? could the preamps tolerate having that crammed backwards into them or must a cut off switch be included, it would be so much easier to hook onto test points TP102/202 and leave it at that.(why? you ask,I have recorded mixer straight to a edit deck and compared it with mixer to camera, camera blatantly worse) 2.Sony apparently messed up the AFM OVU so a magazine guru says practice is "10VU". If the camera were tweaked to 0vu mackie levels it would be easier to use the AFM as at least back up tracks as most of us have only UVW decks. I have no experience here and would have to run load to distortion tests and backoff 16 to 24db on the pots to match O on the mackie.3. Page 8-2, and page 1-4 deal with it and I am not sure what to do there.4. I guess a phono plug hangin out or holed into the viewfinder would get a black and white playback picture.go ahead, laugh at me.5. Bunch of bncs on skinny coax hangin out betweenthe camera and the dockable that send YUVsync out. I say this in the cameras at House of blues some years ago, the cameras decks were rolling at the same time the liveswitching was going on. might not want them clattering about in the field, wonder if it could be optional

Looking into purchasing a BVW-D75PS but can find no literature on it here on the BetaCamPAL site. I believe that it is a BetaSP deck for PAL but has the option of outputting or inputting via serial digital and aes/ebu digital audio signals. Basically, a glorified BetaSP with a digital I/O. Does anyone have experience with this deck to give me some feedback (pros, cons, problems, etc...) Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

never having done this I hope someone can assist.

Using Digidesign ProTools I have mixed audio for layback to a Sony UVW1800P (PAL Beta). The video must remain intact.

How do I record *only* the audio ? (that is, arm the stereo audio tracks for recording only and leave the video untouched).

Is there a way to do this from the front panel of the Betacam machine ? Do I need software in ProTools in order to do this (I have installed the Machine Control option but as yet haven't seen any options to arm only the audio tracks for recording).

Would most appreciate any advice by email.RegardsPeter

Crucio,

I think you are worrying too much about lossy vs lossless video.

Certainly in the UK, high-end stuff is usually Digi Beta (and this is 4:2:2 and compressed at x 2:1). I have seen footage from DVCam and DVCPRO (5:1) and the pictures can look far better than most BetaSP's.It is important to make the distinction between "pro-sumer" and broadcast DV cameras. As DVCam cameras like the DSR500, use professional lenses and to all intents and purposes - are broadcast cameras.

I'm not biased either, because I actually own BetaSP, although I work with a variety.

I'm not sure if you want to buy new or used, but getting an analogue camera (which almost certainly means BetaSP), for under 3000 dollars is gonna be difficult. Digital technology is usually cheaper because of lower cost of components. They also maintain better, and have better head life (usually!). For example (in the UK), a BVW400AP would have cost you about UK£40k, a DVW790WSP (Digi Beta) about UK£30-35k. Not only is the DVW digital, it has better resolution and is widescreen switchable.

Now OK, these prices are out of your ballpark, and I quote them as an example. All you are going to get for the money you want to spend is either a new DVCAM, or a used BVW300.

Hope this helps.Jon

im in the process of buying a pro video camera. I was wondering if anyone could help me pick one. I dont care if its analog. I would actually prefere it since DV is lossy and becuase i think i could probably get an analog camera used easier and cheaper than a digital.

the camera must produce a high resolution. Im not sure of what is really great for resolution but i guess about 700 lines is about right. MiniDV is about 530.

The camera must be 3ccd and not wiegh over 12lbs. Also the media must be easily obtainable.

For a camera like this i know that 0 -3000 dollars isnt much but i think that an analog camera used should be possible right?

Im getting analog because all 0 -3000 dollar digital cameras basically are not worth the money (unless u can prove me wrong?)I do digital editing though so there has to be some way to put it on my computer. I have a lossless video capture system so i need to know, what resolution does the s-video cord support? maybe there is another i need to connect to this?

Thanx so much

RE: SONY BVW-85P, i think only about 220 of these machines were manufactured and i think it was launched in 1990. The heads i am told are about £700 more than an ordinary 75. The PCM data is recorded in the track space of channel 1 linear audio and there is an additional motor on the transport near the audio stack. As far as compatability goes, there shouldnt be a problem but ch1 audio will be sacrificed if using PCM on a recording. The rf envelope will have to be good, otherwise you may get clicks on the PCM.

Does anyone know something about Sonys BVW-85P (75 with PCM). I have some questions: Could I record on the 85 and playback on any other BetaSP machine? How much would a new upperdrum cost? Does anyone has a picture of these unit? Thanks

Heyas! On the bottom of a betacam tape, there's these three little what look like knockouts between the reels and closer to the front of the tape. The three are shaped sort of like a "T" -- a long one in the center and shorter on left and right. I was just curious as to what these are used for. Betacam oxide tapes work great in betamax decks but the latter's tapes don't have these knockouts. See picture w/ scans of both tape bottoms:

Hi,I know this is a Betacam site but as it is pro-gear your folk are the people to talk to. I'm looking for PAL MII equipment (VTRs, System boards etc...) so anyone in the UK who has MII gear and wants to find it a nice home. Make me an offer and I'll look into it. If your outside the UK then I'll consider this as well.

I need to know the serial commands (in binary) required to control the Betacam deck via RS422/RS232 port. Typical commands would be those for STOP and PLAY. I cannot findsuch technical information please help.

Dear All!

I was wondering if anyone knows how to set up a Sony BVW-75P Betacam SP to sync with a Protools 24mix rig using a MOTU AV midi timepiece.

I need to record some audio for a friend onto his Beta video, but I obviously want to use a Protools system which is currently available.

Do I need to strip the Beta tape with SMPTE, or is there another way around this, IE using the timecode XLR's in the back of the betaplayer. If so, how would I go about using such a method.

Many thanks for your time,

Norm>

9/11/01Is a date that I'm sure will live in the memories of all Americans and rational peace loving people through out the world alike. What has happened here today is so shocking and unbelievable words fail to describe it. Thank you to all of our friends from around the world for your kind words of support and sympathy for the trajedy that our country has suffered today.

Hello, does anybody have any BVW-95P, BVW-96P or BVW-85P that they no longer require or are scrap. I might be interested if the price is right. The BVW-95/96 are side loading betas and seem to be redundent these days due to the advance of server technology. The BVW-85p is basically a 75 but with 2 channels of pcm audio (recorded on the track space of linear channel 1 audio). Only 220 machines were made and replacement heads cost about £1k more than that of a 75.

Note I forgot to include: It's probably in a broadcast series, as it is large, heavy, and has a very big viewfinder.

I'm looking for an old non-SP dockable Betacam camcorder from about 1985 or so. It's got a Sony 3CCD Camera head (very nondescript, just regular matte grey), and a large recorder with a horizontal tape loading mechanisim with a glass front with "BETACAM" in all captial letters stenciled onto it.
