Hi everyone,

I just found an old "Portable Video Cassette Recorder Sony SL-3000UB " at my parents home.

I want to connect it to a modern TV I've got but I'm trying to figure out which line and adaptors I need.

I understand I need a BNC male - RCA male line for video connection to a HDMI adaptor I have, but is there a specific one for this machine in particular? The BCN-RCA line I have doesnt fit to the female video output.

Can anybody help me on that?

Thanks.

Tiago

Yesterday I put the teletext with tapes record from tv in the 90's

I only could see the first line with the channel, day, day of the week and and the month, the rest only a part with many mistakes

Why don't record the teletext signal complete in the beta videos?

I checked with vhs and dvd and neither appears, in the dvd in E-E the teletext is missing

Still I didn't check with my U-matic and Betacam videos, I haven't videos with old teletext records in these formats but I can record from the tdt

Message for the administrators.

When opening a new account, the initial post defaults to the Betamax page regardless of where you actually started your post.

It explains why there are regularly incorrect posts on the Betamax page, like mine which should have been on the U-matic group.

Many people deinterlace the videos for see in the PC, this is break the videos, youtube deinterlace when upload a video

The PC monitors should allow 15625 Hz

It's strange isn't it. The same thing happens with my V2000 VCRs and certain VHS VCRs too. I'm looking to change the plasma after Xmas as I want to get all my VCRs out of storage and set them up properly on a TV that does like them. Hehe

Hi Rich:

I've just been contacted by another I've helped stating I tried using both my Sanyo 5000's on a plasma and you get lot's of white speckles. So it seems this is common. Interestingly though their Sanyo M20 was fine, so maybe it's just the older top loaders that have different screening capabilities?

I use only CRT and LCD's so have never witnessed this first hand.

Plasmas aren't that popular though so should'nt be too much of an issue.

Actually when you think most vcr's were made and designed for CRT type TV's and also 4.3 screen ratios I think they hold up pretty well. Just don't go looking for DVD or Blu Ray type resolution as they are obviously, due to digital, far superior.

Hi Kevin.

Thanks for the reply.

I've got the service manual here for both hf100 and hf950 so I'll take a look in them and find the parts list so I can order the correct caps and see if that'll sort the problem (I hope). I had a feeling it was electrical as those little colour flecks flash when in pause mode.

I've got a plasma in the living room and my Sanyo betas don't get on with it at all. White speckles and lots of interference, oddly though my Sony betas aren't affected on the plasma.

Cheers

Rich.

Hi Rich:

The Sony HF100 and 950 are two of the worst Sony's for having high ESR caps in the PSU if they've been powered up for some time. The other models ( F30 or C30 ) usually have about two or three but not always. The HF100 and 950 usually have over 7 on the ones I've seen.

Also make sure all the grounds are in good order two, especially around the head drum area. But I suspect caps are your issue.

Also one other thing are you using a plasma as I've been hearing that Sanyo VTC 5000 's can cause white speckles over the picture when using one with a plasma and work perfectly fine with LCD's. Something else to be aware of.

Hi all.

I've got a slight problem with one of my Sony SLHF100UB 's.

I get random small colour speckles on the picture. They even move on the screen whilst the vcr is in play-pause mode.

They're not recorded on the tape as I've checked its recordings in my other betas.

I don't know if it might be the caps in the power supply as I've not got an ESR meter amongst my tools.

Has anyone else had this problem?

Thanks

Rich.

Yes, looked very good, and arrived in excellent condition. Only just got round to examining it as I let these rest a while after delivery to let them dry out a bit.

All that's wrong with it is the loading mechanism, which I think is worm driven. These are great as they are quieter than belt driven ones, but a pain if someone is daft enough to test by putting a tape in. (not saying that I did that, and if I did, I wouldn't admit to it. lol)

Schematic is arriving today, but I couldn't wait,

I've just had an interesting machine arrive. NEC PVC766

It actually looks to be in excellent condition, even with the protective film still over some controls which is very unusual for a machine of this age. Does anyone know much about this model as there's no info on it. Looks like a very basic service to get back up and running, but I've never worked on an NEC, so any potential issues to look for? Internally, despite having Sony components, it is very much it's own machine, actually one of the most tidiest designs internally I've come across.

Hello. I have a betamax Sony SL-2000 VCR. After replacing a power fuse 125V 4A and charging 12V 1.5Ah battery the vcr has started and opened cassette deck by simply pressing eject button. But after some time it's behavior has changed: pressing the power button starts all the motors. It's a ribbon connector or something else?

Hi Mehmet Yurdakul

You've come to the right place, but I can't really say any better than what's already on palsite as it gives you most of what you need to know.

My first contact with the format was from my late Grandfather who had a Sony C5. He was the only one in the family at the time who could afford to own a video. Yes, you read that right, afford to own a VCR. Different time back then, lots of families were only just starting to own a TV, poorer friends only had a black/white set. To watch a video we would visit someone who had a VCR until we could eventually rent one, which would more than likely be a VHS.

I chose Beta mainly because I found the picture to be better and more stable than VHS. The machines were so much better, in fact many of us have early Beta machines which still give perfect picture, whilst a lot of newer VHS machines, and DVD players only last a year or so.

These days I still use Beta, not so much for films as they need more looking after, but to replace features no longer available on modern equipment. For example, lots of set top boxes no longer broadcast RF out, they may loop through, but that's all, and if you're luck may have a scart on the back, so I use a Beta to relay the signal to other equipment. Great with Youview which only allows subscription channels to 1 set top box. It will also tape from on-demand channels, and anything connected to it, which a lot of modern recorders don't like doing. And when was the last time you saw a DVD player or set top box with a clock? A simple feature which we used to take for granted, the VCR clock display, oh yes and buttons that light up to show you what channel you're actually watching. No need for on-screen displays, it's all on the video!

Hello people,

Me and my study group from university are doing a group project about obsolete technologies and we chose Betamax because some of us were familiar with it and interacted with it in our childhood. I didn't actually own/saw/interacted with the Sony Betamax player so this is why I am creating this thread/chat to ask anyone here to tell me more about the technologies used by Betamax, it's components and how they work. Thank you in advance and have a nice day y'all.

Hi Rich http://www.telespares.com.au/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=321950

Just after my message I quickly checked Telespares to see if they had one, and looks like they do, I think it was $20 Shippping is usually around $10. To do a parts search exclude the "SL-" in the search box, just HF100.

I may have a C6 coming in surprisingly with a different problem to the servo, I was told that parts works fine, so still in shock about that :) I intend to get the readings from that one for reference, plus a detailed scan of PCBs and parts to update my schematics. The Sony ones are good, but I prefer to have good photos added for easier reference.

I'll get back to you with a price on the head disc shortly.

Sony C9 front load mechanism, I do have all the schematics, both printed and PDF, including adjustment manuals and supplementary ones. Interested?

Hi Bjorn.

Thanks for the replies. I've tried all sorts with this c6 but to no avail. I don't have an oscilloscope to check it out on though unfortunately. I think that it's going to be consigned to a rewind machine.

Regarding the hf100 head disk....I'm very interested please. I also have a c9 with eject mechanism timing problems which I need to put right (the cogs slipped whilst I was fitting the cassette inside flap due to it breaking on one side 😭😭😭) I'm going to look online for a service manual for it to see if it shows all the timing marks etc for the mechanism.

Out of interest, if the hf100 head disk is ok, how much will it cost please?

Rich.

Rich, I just read your post for a spare head disc for HF100, I believe the C9 has a similar disc. Do you still need one? I have 2 drum assemblies somewhere here, one from a C9 and one from a HF100, oh and a C5 which is of no use to you, but someone one else might read and want one. Give me a couple of days to locate it, and I'll run the head checker over to see if any good. It was on my to-do list for a while, but never got round to checking them.

HI Rich , C6 servo problems are my biggest headache on these machines. Pay attention to the 0.22MF ELECT(solid) 16v C7, C8. those tiny blue sanyo ones. The shaky picture could also be a sign of CTL head wear, and other host of problems. In all cases we replace all the rubber belts, and have to give the head assembly a good clean. User tampering is another issue, on one machine all the VRs have been messed about with, so causing a real issue often needing the oscilloscope to sort out (another piece of gear that has packed in here).

This machine we've found part of the issue, now the drum rotates very slow, so must be a short around the drum-free VR. Most likely an incorrect capacitor, so backtracking the repair to find the issue although a loud bang gave me some idea. Looks like this one could be heading for use as a rewind/cleaning machine.

We also have a MK2 in where the loading assembly has been taken apart and sort of put back together again, no doubt an attempt to replace a couple of belts, and we have another MK1 with a bad power supply board. So if you need a replacement servo chip to try, I may be able to remove one for you.

I have servo problems with my slc6 too. I've replaced nearly all the electrolytic capacitors on the PCB and still shaking and wobbly picture. Damn thing 😣😣

Hi All, sorry it's been a little while. My Sl-C6 is having issues, although dealt with lots of common servo problems on these, this one presents an unusual problem, hopefully a repair mistake on my part.

I've rectified the normal servo/poor capstan lock problem (replaced all the little caps) C62 on SS-9 had to be changed as well, now the issue is no playback at all. Mechanism works, but wont switch to playback, upon further inspection, I noticed the drum speed behaving very odd, basically mimicking the reel motor speed, and oddly changing direction for rewind. I'm guessing a short-circuit somewhere. C62 (16v 470uF) lasts about 5 minutes before bulging and popping.

Any ideas? Like I said, I'm hoping its a simple repair error.

Stephen.

I know this is not much help but I de vaguely remember having a similar issue on that model.

I had a spares F30 so swapped out the servo (SS) board. It cured said issue.

I would suspect the main drive IC that controls both head drum and capstan motor. Also check for leaky transistors around this area, faulty resistors and high esr caps. Also check for cracks around said board too.

......Kevin

IMPORTANT:........One other word on the F30. ..........

When a tape is inside and you turn it ON make sure you hear TWO clicks.

One is the pinch roller/back tension solenoid moving the other, most importantly, is the reel brake solenoid de activating. The reason I state this is I've now seen two where the reel brake solenoid has a failed resistor and this brake does snot release. Sadly someone had used FF and REW or tried to play it like that and there is now a band of noise down to wearing of the heads down to the high back tension.

As far as I'm aware other models do not seem to get that issue.

Hi I'm looking for any information on obtaining service manuals or schematics (or both, preferably) for a Sanyo Multi-System Beta unit. Model VTC-R4ME. It's from 1983/1984 and in many ways resembles the VTC-5150 in styling and functionality, and supported multiple systems (NTSC 3.58 & 4.43, Pal and Secam). From my research, it appears that this model sold mainly in the Middle East & Asian markets.

I've been trying to fix-up this old beauty for a while now and am rapidly approaching the limit on what I can figure out without reference materials. Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks for the reply. It's annoying as the video heads on this particular slhf100 seem fine, just the hifi is playing up. It plays pre recorded hifi tapes fine but on its own recordings the tracking knob has to be turned a bit to the right for the hifi to come on. Sometimes it records in hifi but won't play back the hifi sound at all. After speaking to Gabriel about this the conclusion is that the hifi heads are shot.

The only place now is from a good used/spares NX100.

You will also find ,although similar the ones fitted to the Sanyo 'M' series (M10,20 ,30 &40) are NOT compatible.

Is it the actual motor assembly that you need or is the shaft worn irregularly down to oxide build up not removed for many years?

Arturo,

You need checking if the missing guides have broken the threading ring on their fixing points. If so, it would be better finding a whole threading ring with all the guides.

If you only miss the guides you may get them (or the whole ring either) from a donor machine. Watch out, the screws are quite tiny.

Changing the threading ring involves overhauling the mechanism section and it is time consuming. However, its alignment is not very complicated.

Hope to be helpful,

Gabriel

Gabriel is right Misha, if you buy ntsc machines and want to play them in a european country the best is to purchase a 250v > 110v external transformer, they are cheap if you don't need too much power, and if you want to try several machines after buying them without opening them in case you'll have to return them and ask for a refund if they don't work correctly it would be interesting for you.

Oh, that makes a lot of sense. There is something similar with the SL-F30PS, only having 220 and 240V options in the transformer.

I've been looking the service manual of the F30 and it has little in common with the HFR30, regarding voltage rails as you have listed. Also having a look just in case there were any available manual for HFR50 of HFR60 which seem quite similar. No luck either.

I would consider using a step down transformer. But if you find a better solution, please let us know.

Kind regards,

Hi Gabriel,

I was hoping for the same, but I'm afraid the only unused connection on the transformer is for the USA 120V. That would make sense to me as these machines were only sold in the USA and Japan. I'm still trying to find info on that...

Misha,

There is a small chance that the transformer inside your HFR30 also had the 230V wiring. Just have a look to the primary side if you have some unused connection. If so, I would first measure the resistance of the coils (should be double the reading of the normal one).

However, if all the above is affirmative, I would remove the transformer from the PSU before supplying mains and measure the output voltages.

I look forward to know your progress.

By the way, red beta units are really cool.

Small update on my SL-HFR30: I picked the machine up today at the post office (it's been there for over a week but they didn't notify me). It's the Japanese version in red, and it looks brand new; the only flaw I could find is that the "it's a Sony" sticker on the tuning cover is slightly peeling.

I already wrote that I want to convert it to 230V, and I thought up 2 ways to do this using original Sony parts:

The SL-30MD and SL-20 type 2 have a voltage selectable version of the same PSU, which would be the ideal solution, but you won't find one of those on this side of the world... The other idea I have is to replace the T901 and I was hoping to use one from a SL-F30, however the output on those is quite different, so now I'm back to digging through the service doc's...

These are the values I need according to the print board: 17V/17V/-20V/GND/45V/AC 4.2V/AC 4.2V

Hi Rich

Are you using a modern flat TV (Plasma LCD LED)or a vintage TV ? That looks very much like the kind of interference I discovered between my former plasma TV and my SL-T50ME / SL-HF950ES and SL-C9 F. I wrote older posts about this problem here in the past you can still find them. Now I almost dont' have this trouble anymore since I replaced my Plasma 45 LG TV for a new Samsung 75 3D LED TV. (Yet I had to place the 3 betas not too close to the TV otherwise it reappears, at least 50 cm).

There is one easy way to be sure these white lines stripes and dots are not an interference with your TV : Play a tape and record it on an other modern VCR (if possible a HDD, DVD, USB, Blu-ray...). when the recording starts put the TV off for one minute, then put it on again and watch your recording : If the interference has been recorded while the TV was off it's a genuine technical problem as Kevin and Gabriel suggest, if it hasn't been recorded there is no problem, it is only a strong interference with your TV as I had with my plasma, you'll just have to place the VCR away from 3 or 4 meters at least from your TV set and the white lines and dots will disappear.

Hi Kevin.

Thank you for your reply. I'm still waiting for the contact cleaner to arrive so I can try what Gabriel suggested.

I'll let you know the outcome.

Many thanks

Hi Richard:

As Gabriel has correctly informed you the reel motor on some Sanyo's have high miles and will be either clogged with debris from the brushes debris or the brushes will be severely worn. When that happens you WILL get sporadic and uniform white flashes on the tv screen that cannot be erased. They won't be like random drop out's or tracking 'noise' and will only appear when this motor is turning. In the Sanyo's even when in 'PAUSE' mode the reel motor still turns and the clutch slips to the take up spool. The capstan motor stops moving the tape. In the Sony's the solenoid pulls the pinch roller away from the tape and the reel spool motor stops.

Also occassionaly on the Sanyo Reel motor the commutator can suffer with one spot having it's coating worn off. This will cause the reel motor to stick. Especially from stop.

Parts can be interchanged inside these motors too as some will have worn items and not others.

It is quite rare though.

If a reel motor has been changed out on the Sanyo 'M' (10,20 ,30, 40) series it's usually down to high mileage.

The reel motor size for the 5000,5150,6500 and 5300 and 5400 is slightly bigger than for the 'M' NX 100 series. I've seen a few M40 's with the bigger one installed and usually the hi-Fi heads are getting quite worn by then.

Hope this helps...................Kevin

Hello Rich,

If you think you need one of those motors, I have some of them in good condition for my spares. I could sell one of them at a reasonable price.

Just make sure yours is faulty and please let me know.

If the motor is worn, do you know anywhere I can buy a good used on release?

Rich,

According to the symptoms you describe, it might be due to a worn motor which is injecting noise spikes into the electronics.

I would first try to spray contact cleaner the motor (it is sometimes a temporal remedy) in the underside. You shall remove a small sticker covering the access to the brushes.

This motor is easy to access, just flip the video down and open the bottom cover. It is a black motor driving the tape.

Just give it a go to discard other issues.

Gabriel

Hi all.

I just received a Sanyo vtc6500 that I won on flebay, very surprisingly it all seems to be working fine apart from a band of white sparkley dots which moves slowly from the top of the screen and gradually moves down to the bottom and back again. I've done a recording on it and played it back through another beta vcr and no sign of those white dots. They are also moving up and down the screen when the picture is paused also.

When I first tried it after plugging it in the colour was really bad with lots of white squiggles on all of the colours, that has gone now. I don't know if that's connected?

Any suggestions would be great.

Thanks

Rich.

Hi Misha,

Now I better understand your needs. I know there are some american machines with selectable mains voltage. For example, the SL-20 was built in two variants (type 1 and 2, one of them was voltage selectable).

I haven't seen such a feature in that "HiFi-ready" model, but as long as they share chassis with the SL-20, it might be a possibility. However, looking at Google images I haven't seen the rear switch.

Other (dramatical) solution would be using a step down autotransformer.

Sorry not being more specific but my knowledge on American players is limited.

Hi Gabriel,

To be exact I'm trying to find out if the power supply parts are interchangable, so that I can modify a 100V machine to work on the European power system. I mentioned the wrong model though, it's a HFR30 I'd like to convert...

Hi Russell.

Could be a few things.

I suspect you have a bad reel motor. Or a dry point on the comutator.

Try turning it on and off a few times without a tape inside it.

Does the reel motor advance every time for a bit. It should. If you have a bad motor contact it won't move. Make sure you leave at least two seconds between each try.

It could also be dirt on the reel take up LED sensor. That too will trigger stop if it cannot read those pulses.

There is also a cassette down switch ,Which you gain access to underneath. If those contacts are not clean it will play up in that area too.

Let me know how it goes...................Kevin

@k.lambert or anyone else who may know...

I have a Sanyo VTC 5000 that needed new belts, idler etc. I replaced all these gave it a bit of a clean etc and everythings perfect... for about 3 seconds anyway, then it stops playing, it doesn't stop properly and wind the tape back it just stops dead mid play as if a safety feature has kicked in, any ideas?

Thanks

Unless you were 100% interested on the NTSC subsection of that machine, you might have a look to the SL-F30 service manual. They have a lot in common.

I agree it's a HUGE risk.

ALWAYS ask them to try it out first and if it's down to 'no tape available' offer to send them one to check it out or only pay a small price for it, if you are still tempted.

Mine always come fully checked over and fully refurbished and that does not mean new heads. Most I see are in fine shape.

When you've been burned a few times you learn from it.

Misha,

I just checked the original listing of that T50. I am afraid it is becoming more and more usual that sellers are saying "it works!" instead of "it turns on the lights/display" without further testing the machine.

It is always good practice to wait for a reputable seller to drop a listing which contains things such as "fully checked", "refurbished" or the like.

Good luck in the search of that NTSC player!

I'll be sending the SL-T50ME back tomorrow, and I'm getting the full payment and shipping back from PayPal, but I'm not sure about the return shipping. I bought it as being "working" but it was already picked for parts! A warning as it might be ending up on eBay again: the seller is ilian73 and the serial number is 303259. Don't buy!

If anyone has a SL-T50ME for sale, or another player that plays ntsc 3.58 is in good working condition, please let me know! :)

The back tension is adjusted by a small screw/plastic slider located through a slot on the reel drive base on the left. The forward torque is on the SS board and usually has TQ next to it.

Do you have the Sony slc003 torque cassette as you WILL need this?

Rich, if it was a SL-HF100 ES I might have been interested, but I see it is a "UB" UK PAL only model and all my Beta cassettes are SECAM... !

Rich :

It seems that your problem is electrical (probably a dead transistor) as you don't notice any erratic behaviiour of the tap.

Also I just wanted to thank you for talking about Rubber Renue.. It seems great for rejuvenating pinch rollers that deteriorate tape. In one of his videos 12voltvids says : "Never (NEVER!) clean a pinch roller with alcohol, always use Rubber renue from MG chemichals"... mmmhhh ... better learning this now than never... !

David:

I'm answering to one of your older posts I didn't see ; Beta III (ntsc) is better than VHS LP but clearly inferior to beta II ... !! Betamax SECAM was way much better than VHS SECAM. In fact VHS SECAM was never too good, it seems that the VHS makers never tried to make good recording circuits for SECAM...

But Sony Betamax really did a good job and Sony Beta clearly shows the superiority of SECAM compared to PAL and NTSC. (More contrast, brighter colors...).

Hi

I have had a Sony Betamax C7 sitting in a box, collecting dust over the years so I thought it should now see the light of day again and I should teach my children about good old cassette tapes!

Only problem is, that the tapes I have (and I have quite a few) were jumping all over the place, although the sound quality wasn't too bad. Annoyingly, I tried to "clean" the inside with one puff of breath and the machine now won't load a tape properly!

Therefore, does anyone know of someone who can service the machine, or someone who lives SW London / Surrey area who would like a little project as I really would love to get the machine to work properly again and relive my youth?!

Many thanks

Rich,

You might have a look to the normal audio mute signal, just to have an idea of what's going on there.

I would begin measuring voltage levels at CN502 pin 5 in AM-5 board. After that, keep an eye to the pin 16 in IC501 (LA7048). Just monitor those signals so as to see they are delayed as the normal audio.

However, the involved components in the audio signal path of these HiFi machines are somehow complex so the strategy I would follow might be recording a tape with an audio tone (say, 1kHz). Having the help of that tape in playback, following the signals both in the audio and the logic/control path is easier.

Just let us know your improvements, hope you can fix it!
