Hi, just a quick question, I have just bought 20 tdk HDX-PRO 750s from a seller on ebay in the usa and will be using these in my slhf950. I would like to know if they are suitable for recording in the superbeta pro mode, or just standard superbeta? I would think these tapes were tdk s equivilant of the PRO-X from Sony, but does it have to be the Sony PRO-X tape and nothing else for superbeta pro use? In any case they are excellent tapes and produce superb picture quality but would just like to know if they are up to the job for superbeta pro use. Thanks!

Just bought a NEC VC-N70EU HiFi VCR off of Ebay. I replaced the drive belt, It needs a new idler gear as the teeth are broken. I went to replace the loading belt...And after doing that I went to plug the Vcr in and nothing. Does not power up, all of a sudden....I don't understand. I noticed wires coming from the power source with a capacitor glued to the video head, it was getting hot when the unit powered up, I wonder if that has anything to do with the unit not powering up? Does anyone know??

Sony SL-C9 frame advance fault:Does anyone have a service manual or info to hand which would tell me what to adjust for this fairly minor problem on an SL-C9: The 1/10th speed, and frame advance (including reverse) don't quite work, the picture jumps a tiny bit but doesn't move on a frame. Also the freeze frame often has a noise bar. But the 1/5th speed works just fine and without a noise bar. Clearly there is some adjustment required to change the nudge power for the very slow motion operations. Any advice most appreciated.

All other functions are 100% (now that I've swapped the PSU and repaired the usual front-loading problems).

Thanks.

Hi Noel,Ron and Craig. Thanks for your comments to my observations about tape performances. It's nice to know i gave you some food for thought and a interesting debate.Ron, yes you are right TDK and AGFA did use the twin window shell....my mistake. The Scotch tapes i still have from way, way back in the early eighties are still playing well and there may have well been a bad batch as you say Noel. One other interesting point I have still yet to see the dreaded deterioration of the recordings i've heard so much about after around 25 years old, i believe.it's interesting a lot shouting about this are the transffering companies to DVD.Say's it all don't you think?keep the interesting comments and views coming....this board just got interesting again.........Happy Beta viewing............Kevin (UK)

Hello to you all, I am still in the market for a perfect Sony 950 SLV and bitterly regret hurling my own into a metal skip at the local tip about 3 months ago. I was told it was beyond repair unless I was prepared to 'fork out' £1300 plus VAT for new heads. Reading the latest postings on the site about this machine, it would appear that something could have been done to (possibly) correct the fault with mine. A perfect C9 might be a machine I would consider.I have been on ebay and have 'met' with some delightful sellers. Some have been extremely helpful and offered unqualified assistance, some have been very guarded, when asked for a FULL description of the machine offered. I am seeking an honest merchant to whom I am prepared to pay above market value, for a machine that IS PERFECT IN EVERY WAY.

Kevin,

Interesting comments you make about tapes. I bought some library type hard case Scotch L500s and they had problems with tape breakdown but admittedly after a lot of use. They used to shed oxide and block the heads. It might have been a bad batch because scotch generally had a good name. (A "3M" product) I have found the Fuji tapes to be excellent and was lucky enough to pick up a lot of "new" old stock from a TV station. I too have had the problem you describe with certain sony cassettes jamming and squeeling. Interesting stuff.

To K.Lambert.

G/day Kevin,

interesting chat on differences in tape shell's etc, Kodak were in fact not the only manufacturer to use the twin window cassette shell! Agfa and TDK also used these shell,s - TDK on for some of their super avilyn HS tapes - both the Agfa & TDK tapes I have look identical to the Kodak shell including the markings on the clear windows!

I also have some other twin window cassettes that appear to be none of the above brands and have different markings on the clear windows.

I find this type of cassette very useful when setting up machines - especially when the windows are removed it enables all sorts of tweaking! [ie tape take-up - tensions etc etc]

Good to have the chat page back - it seems more active than it's been for a long time!

regards

Ron

Hello, charlie. I found them. they are the two small ones. I don't know which one is a .1 and .22 I found caps at Studio Electronics the site where I get my replacement belt kits they have 50 volts that are .1 and .22 MF value. Will they work? I don't know much about caps, I should learn if I'm going to start to fix these vcrs....

Adam, I went out in my shop and grabbed a SL-5000 -SS-9 board and found the C-60 you were talking about. You need to go a little farther over from there. In fact go over till you see a a IC marked IC -1. An IC looks like a black centipede. The C-7 and C-8 position caps are about 1/2 inch left of that. The caps are tantilum capacitors but a normal cap should be ok.As far as the FF problem just replace the tact switch (the little switch your FF button is engaging when you press it). That going in a different direction is very common in the SL-HF 300 and 400 series but I guess the 5000 could do it to .The tact switches have a tiny little metal disk inside them that corrodes .Charlie

HiI found the worst culprit for difficulty in playing a tape even when new were the Sony L750's around the 1985 period. They changed the quality of the tape spool/ outer shell plastic to a harder material and i had quite a few when new would slow down and cause vibrations and picture disturbance.I proved this when i removed the spools and put them in another cassette shell by a different manufacturer. Also if you are using the newer front loading Sanyo's with a rubber top idler this will struggle more then the older geared type.Scotch were one of the best for performance on all counts for tapes as were Fuji. The early and latter Sonys were great but the ones made around 1985 not so.Sanyo, Maxell,TDK and BASF were all OK and the Kodak brand were the only manufacturer to make two windows ( ala VHS style) with their Beta tapes and they were fine too......................Kevin

Small problem:

I have noticed a small issue in the EDV-9000. I wanted to get some opinions before I just dig into the machine again.

The issue is:

It doesn't seem to completely erase tapes. It shows a small amount of bleedthrough or whatever from the old recording, mostly at the bottom 10% or so of the picture, representing itself mainly as shifting colors through the new recording (like you used to get in the early machines when trying to do editing, and the old video would show through partially on the portion of the tape that was between the erase head and the video head).

Can someone give me any pointers on how to correct this? The machine has flying erase heads. The video heads seem to be quite good, as if I record especially in ED, it looks as good as the original signal (haven't tried it with a DVD as yet, but soon).

TIA

To Adam,

regarding your problem with tapes not running well! - you don't mention what make or model all your vcr's are?

Anyway particularly quite a few of the Sanyo models tend to behave the way you describe when the tape load drive belt becomes weak - this causes the tape to not sit down as firmly as it should in the machine and when the spools are about evenly balanced [i.e. each spool has about the same amount of tape in them]that is when this problem is most evident.

If you remove the cover of the machine and press lightly on the cassette you should find the problem dissappears, if this is so - the remedy is to fit a new [taut] load motor belt and the problem should dissappear.

Not sure if the above applies to any Sony / Toshiba machines as any of these machines I have worked on my policy is to replace all belts anyway.

Hope the above cures your problems?

Ron

I have a question. I have about 5 working beta vcrs, and tons of pre recorded factory movies that are from the early 80s and up. I've noticed allot of the tapes will about half way into the movie, I will hear a straining noise coming from the player, sounds like friction between the tape and heads, I noticed when doing that the picture starts to get wavey and the sounds starts to sound muffled. All players do it with certain movies. If I stick my finger in the player and move the tape a tad bit the noise will stop and play perfect. Is there something in the players that I should loosen up? if not, what would be causing that? Seems to me the movies are fine, great picture when that prolem is not happening....Please let me know...

Thanks....Adam

Hello Charlie, thanks for the reply on the SL-5000....Another few questions. I opened the unit up and I counted a total of 12 light blue caps, 2 being much smaller. None of them say c7 or c8 on the board. I saw a c60 all being two digits and so on. Should I replace all the blue caps? Also will that fix the fast forward also. I'm guessing the two small caps are .1 value and the rest are .22?? The only store I know that sells capacitors is Radio Shack, I'm guessing they will have what I need...Let me know....Thanks..

Desparately needed:

Remote control for Sony EDV-9000/9500 (RMT-164)

Owner's manual for Sony EDV-9000/9500 (English version)

I just got this machine. The seller stated that it had loading/unloading problems. It took me about 15 minutes to figure out that the problem was that the worm gear for the loading mech had too much throw and would become disengaged from it's motor. I added a couple of Teflon shims and now it works perfectly. Great record and playback (ED ßeta looks fantastic).

Anyone that can help, I would sure appreciate it.

IJones, the only other place I can think of is car boot sales. You won t find any in places like cash converters! Car boot ones will probably be broken. Bearing in mind that repairs can cost a small fortune and parts are not easy to find, prices of working machines in good condition will be high. Even broken c9s or ones that have been stored in sheds or lofts are going for £50 to £80 on ebay, and ones in fulkl working order and good cosmetic condition with remote anywhere upto £ 200. But I did sell a fully working order, very clean slf-30 with mint remote on ebay a few weeks back that only went for £56.

Adam, The bad caps your looking for on your SL-5000 are located on the SS-9 servo bd of your vcr.The SS-9 board is the one that has the tracking knob attached to it.The bad caps (c-7 and c-8 ) are about 3/4 of the way across the bd from the tracking knob. The caps themselves aren't marked c-7 and c-8 . This ID is printed on the board itself. The component side of the board is brown in color and is makes it easy to see.The caps your looking for are light blue in color and are close to one another.I used 35 volt replacements instead of the original 16 volt.I have a old service bulletin from Zenith / Sony that says to use the higher voltage ones but they don't give a reason .I suspect this was to prevent more future failures of those components.Who knows if it helps make the caps last longer but I'd put em in, just keep the same MF value (.1 and .22) Good luck!Charlie

Thanks, Craig, for the encouragement about my old tapes. I actually first encountered the incompatibility notion last week on the webpage of a Betamax devotee (which of course I can't find now) He commented that tapes he'd recorded one one of his machines couldn't be read by another while the second machine could read tapes a friend had recorded on yet a third machine. (I believe the SL-HF900 and SL-HF750 might have been the newer machines.) It just gave me a bit of pause.

Ronni, In the early days of the VHS v Beta war, there were some outrageously false claims made by the VHS camp to discredit the superior format, and I think I can actually recall remembering that one about not being able to play a tape recorded on one Beta well on another. All you need to remember is you'll need to adjust the tracking control appropriately when playing back tapes recorded on other machines. As for the age of your tapes- I have many tapes, audio and video, from the eighties and late seventies that still play back beautifully; it depends on how well they've been looked after and stored all those years. Great to see the chat page and all the gang back, keeping Beta alive!...

Thanks for the clarification, Olive. I thought I'd read somewhere that Beta tapes recorded on one model Betamax machine (especially the early ones) were not always readable on another. If that isn't the case, then it certainly broadens the number of machines I can bid on.

Ronni - The TT-2000 tuner/timer has the A/V outputs neccessary for the best possible transfer. You can use the RF output on a standalone SL-2000 to input into a DVD recorder that has RF input (most of the consumer ones that sit on/under/next-to the living room TV set do but the quality won't be as good.

There is a gizmo that connected the SL-2000 to a TV with A/V in/outs called a VMC-220A but you'd do just as well on getting an SL-2000/TT-2000 combo unit.

Or any functioning Betamax. It really isn't necessary to limit yourself to the same unit as you recorded it on.

I just found a bunch of family tapes recorded on a SL-2000 in the 1980's. The beloved recorder is long dead and gone. To capture these for transfer to DVD it has been recommended that I use the same model Betamax and I have begun haunting Ebay to that end. Do I need the tuner/timer also for capture or does the SL-2000 have the appropriate outputs? And also, with what I've been reading on this site about "squeaky" hydrolised tapes, is there really any chance they will still play? Thanks so much. I have been mourning the loss of my Betamax for many years and it is reassuring to find it still has a home here.

Good to see the chat page back! Was thinking that that was the end! Anyways, I would like to ask if anyone knows about availability of threading gears for the sl-c9. I own 5 and this gear is split on 3 of them! Its the top larger black pulley the belt goes round under the head amp can and would like to know if they can be obtained in any way other than from other c9s.Also is it possible still to get NEW head disks and upper drums for the c9? These are worn on one of mine and would like to get new ones in order to replace. The c9 I have to say is very easy to work on..late last year I had never owned a beta before but now on c9s I can replace a psu, replace threading gears either the whole unit or just the top gear, remove and clean pinch roller, and also remove and replace the whole cassette carriage. Adam, The SL-5000 series of Sony betas are noted for their capacitors on the servo board drying out. This will cause all sorts of unstable picture and sound problems. I think Noel wrote a very good posting on how to correct this. His posting was about the Pal version of the 5000--the C-6. The bad caps are usually the ones marked C7 and C8 on the servo bd and if your good with a soldering iron they're pretty easy to replace.

I have a Sony Betamax SL-5000, I just ordered the belt kit that contains a pinch roller and idler tire and replaced all the belts. The unit still does not work correctly, when playing a BII recorded tape, the tape plays too slow, when playing a BIII recorded tape, the tape plays too fast. The Vcr does not show a picture except for lines, but I noticed a nice clear picture when I play a BIII recorded tape in Rewind mode. Also I noticed if I press fast forward, it will rewind instead, So I can't fast forward a tape at all. I'm pretty sure this is all a electrical problem. I would like to fix or get the Vcr fixed properly, but I don't know the costs, and from what I heard is that the SL-5000 Series are more to repair than what they are worth....Let me know any info.....Thanks...

Info needed: ED Beta EDV-9000

Will this machine play ßIs recorded tapes? I've managed to pick one up with minor mechanical problems (tapes jam when ejecting), but working otherwise. Also, where to pick up a remote for the thing (lot of features only available via the remote).

E-mail is good.

TIA

I have an SL-HF100UB and also an SL-HF950, both in clean unmarked good condition, as well as about 80 tapes, mostly used once, mostly 750s, some new, some 850s. The manuals and remotes are missing, but probably somewhere among my worldly goods. I live in Wiltshire. At my age (75) it is probably time these machines were used by someone who still has wide range hearing. Any interested purchaser, please email me. Ron

Thanks for that. My site at betaheavem.com is back on again. To BobD, it is possible to repair some of the load gears if you know how and the plastic has not completely broken up as a hardened mess.

BobD, The instructions for modifying your SL-HF-900 to record B1s can be found in great detail at BetainfoGuide.com .Scroll down and find tricks and tips --you click on that and you'll find it. As far as the gear is cocerned if it's one of the gears on the right side of the carriage thats broke you may still be able to get it if it's the one that breaks all the time on Sony carriages. Is it on the carriage? Let me know.Charlie

I hve an SL-HF 900 that recently gave up the ghost. The local repair shop (Minnesota, USA) said it was a broken gear drive and that parts are not available anymore. Is that true? Is the machine unrepairable?I read with great interest Charlie's post about modifying his 900 to record in B-1, and would like to know how that can be done--if I can get the 900 up and running, that is.

Noel, seems like your site is not working, could've been internet Backbone problem I assumed. ---#---I have plenty of high-end Betamax on Ebay lastime (NTSC&PAL). No one dare to buy for such good Betamax. They only want cheap price for great machine. Some are willing to spend hundred of bux for high-tech junks. Seems silly that they are happy with junks rather than solid Betamax machine. Worst to know that they pay hundreds of bux for only junk VHS machine. I'm just discovered that most of them do NOT know what they're buying.RegardsBoby

Hi guys,

It has been a long time without chat page so great to see its back. Well beta is not dead, I still see a lot of people using beta and wanting machines fixed in Australia. A lot more SLHF950s seem to be surfacing. Some of them have blown power supplies and the repair centres that are lef there dont seem to have much luck fixing them. In Australia, I do a changeover service on the SLHF950 power supply and guarantee the repair for a year. See my website betaheaven.com for contact information.

cheers Noel

Hi everyone! It's great to have the board active again.I recently purchased a Sl-HF-750 and really like it .I purchased it from the original owner and all the manuals ,remote and box were in perfect shape. My only problem with the 750 is I can't get the on screen display to work. The owners manual is very vague about it only saying it can be turned on and off by pressing the display switch. It also said to make sure the MPX filter is in the off position when using the display. So far I have been unable to get it to work in either record or playback. Am I doing something wrong or did the display part "buy the farm" ? Charlie

Hi all. I'm here in the United States. Last year a friend gave me around 100 Beta tapes that he has had in storage for about 18 years. He used to own a video store and when he closed it in 1989 he put all his movies in storage, including the Beta's. Almost all are in the vinyl clamshell cases that video stores have used, though a couple are in their original boxes. When he and his wife moved they offered all the movies to my husband and I. We do not have a Beta machine so there is no way for us to check out the quality. However, we are looking for homes for the movies so they don't go to waste. We don't want any money for them just to have the recipient take the chance and pay for postage to get them there. One person from another board took about 11 of the movies we have. He said 8 played fine, if that helps. You can email directly with any questions or a list of the tapes we have.

Hello All. Firstly I like to say that my family and myself are happy that this board is up and running.

To tell you the truth, I was having withdrawls without a place to vent and to show-case the items that I buy on the old Bay.

I was taping this fabulous film on the Turner Channel with the SLHF900 that I bought from the Cleveland Football team.. The copy was perfect thru out the film until 3 seconds at the end during the credits, I saw a faint drop out.

I couldn't never watch this movie again and even though the wife and kid begged me to let them view this movie, I stood by my morals..

I told them that when I saw this rare film on the OLD BAY, I would bid on it.. 3 years later I finally found a sealed Beta HI FI and swooped this baby up before anyone could find it.. Check out the old link below..

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=170104712477

My kid says he's a little too old now to watch the movie.. Well that's life and I still enjoy those little munchkins and the great color film..

Let me not digress, When I popped in the OZ film on my 900, I noticed that the color was not perfect when I played the Beta movie..

I tried 35 HI FI tapes and they all played perfect.

Could it be the sealed OZ tape ?? How could it be, it was sealed??

By the way I just tried to purchase my 12th Sony rewinder.....need it desperately cause most of mine hsve the crack in the top plastic. Here's that auction:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=250108882245

SORRY FOR THIS RANT...IT'S JUST ALL STORED UP AND I NEED TO VENT...BEAR WITH ME FOLKS...GOTTA RUN ....JUST GOT AN EMAIL THAT I WAS OUT-BID.

Hi all,

just wondering if anyone in Betaland has a user manual or service manual for a Sony SL-800ME or for a Sony SLO-1700 ?

If I could borrow any of the above for photo copying that would be great - in return I can send a photocopy of maybe the manual you require [as of beta I have many!]

Any leads to finding these manuals would be appreciated - thanks

Flyerman, You hit the nail right on the head! Replace the STk5441 voltage regulator in the power supply and your functions will all be restored. Plan on keeping these on hand because of most Sony betas 20 plus age they're starting to fail. About a month ago I had to replace one in my SL-HF-900. Hope this helps you out!Charlie

To all, I'm new to your group, but not to betamax. I own 4 at this time and I am having a problem with a USA version SL-HFT7. I bought this on ebay and checked it out and it worked fine at start. I went to install in my system and went to play a tape and it loaded the tape, threaded up and died. The clock is still working and you can set the time, but no other functions work. It will not power up, no other functions. I checked the power supplies 5volt constant and switched are there I'm not sure about 12volt. I do not have a manual as yet but was wondering if any of you have come acrossed this. I know that it has a SKT type power regulator and possibly it just died? I've been an electronics tech for over 30yrs , so I'm not just and tinkerer, so help please!!! Also I had to change my email to my non-bussiness account, so I resent this!

Hi there,

In June last year I acquired a Sony SL-F30 stereo betamax machine. This deck was running just fine until tonight, when after I ejected a tape as I would normally, it would not accept any more tapes. Pushing the tape in does not cause the loader to take over and draw the cassette the rest of the way in. Another problem is that once the power is switched on, the left hand spool rotates for a few seconds, then the "Cassette Inside" LED on the front panel lights up and starts blinking, even though there is no cassette in there.

Being in Sydney Australia, is there anywhere I could take this unit to for repair? I have a few hundred tapes I need to transfer and I can't do it now because of this problem.

Cheers,Frank

I got my parts from Sony yesterday and last nite I modified my SL-HF-900 to record in B1s.It took me about two hours but in the end I was sucessful and am very pleased with the results. Most of the time was spent scanning the circuit boards hunting for the right position . There was quite a few jumper wires to add and even a couple to take out but the instructions were pretty clear. I recommend that you take your time and don't expect to do it in 15 minutes. The B1s picture thats produced is much better than my NEC VC-N65EU which also records in B1s. Sonys quality is shining through. I'am gonna do some more recording tonite but at this point in time I'am glad I modified the 900.Charlie

To Stewart with the two C9s,

It is much easier and safer to change over the power supplies between the two C9s to get one good machine. Then you dont have tape path alignnement issues or the potential of breaking a video head whilst changing over the drum assemblies.
