I was just looking for charge pump design and found many useful info on DC to DC converter. Have you got any clue if such converter may or not to produce interference(spike/outband-frequency)..?

mmmmm yes. If you want a beta in full working order and mint condition with accessories as both noel, kevin and sometimes myself sell on ebay, then of course it will cost. We have worked hard on these decks, at the very least an hour cleaning tape path, heads and pinch roller, cost of alcohol and buds, and then more time to carefully remove dust from circuit boards, cassette bay, and power supply block, which can be notorious for collecting dust, and could be a fire hazard in extreme cases if dust is left in this area. Add the cost of trial tapes and the cost soon mounts. Think of it the same as buying a 1960s car which has been restored. You would expect to pay far more for a restored one than one which had been used and not cared for. Or am I wrong?

found the problem kinda it was either the fact that the tape was shedding on the control head,or that the play record switch was dirty and screwed up, or that the tracking switch's solder joints had broke loose from the board. replaced the tape in my only two cassettes with some svhs tape i had laying around and spliced it to the leaders now i have 2 happy betas :)

i had seen that this was pal oriented but hadn't found anywhere else that i thought could answer the question.

also sorry for all the trouble y'all are having with people like olive. its just sad.

Uh... that really wasn't the plank. But if you insist... I'll spend my money at home soas not to contaminate your side of the pond with my presence...

I should note that if you don't buy "American" products, eventually they'll stop trying to sell them in your country. It's called the free market, you should try it sometimes...

At any rate, if you feel like buying European-only products you can always try this nice Belgian brew called 'Budweiser' (pending Anheiser Busch's sale to InBev) or watch this French show called "Late Night with Conan O'brien" (Vivendi is a 20% shareholder of NBC-Universal). Seems economic 'imperialism' is a two-way street these.

And to kick off this new beginning in a proper example, I give you:

THE SLHF-870-D STORY

The Sony SLHF-870-D, SuperBeta HiFi VCR, was an outgrowth of one of the favorites of Betamax Afficionados, the 860-D VCR.

The 870-D has the same basic features of: a Digital EffectsProcessor with Picture in Picture capability, Digital Mosaic, Digital Art (Solarization), Flash Motion (Strobe effect), Multi-mini framed pictures, perfect Digital Freeze Frame, Digital Scan (allowing for visual scanning in the fast forward or reversemode) & Digital Pause, plus all the Editing Features of the 860-Das well, including Synchro-Edit, Micro Time Phase Edit (glitch free),and Control S.

But to these features of the 860-D, the 870-D addedthe EDV-7500's more stable transport mechanism with TapeStabilizer System, the Faroudja Image Processing System, Tilted SputteredSendust Heads, Decorative Walnut Wood End Caps andFour Circular Silver Foot Pods on it's bottom to raise it for betterventilation and a graceful appearance.

It's Video and Stereo Audio performance are spectacular. It is a beautiful and quality Betamax.

OK..I've started this all over.

No more nastiness and absurdities from the membership.

Let's, as I asked repeatedly, to address the one thing we all have in common: BETAMAX.

If we all comply, this site will flourish.

Thanks again to the webmaster for doing what I have requested. I hope you folks don't make me look foolish in his eyes.

Regards all. Let's talk...cameras!

Technically speaking a CCD camera is better than a tube camera in terms of power usage (very low) and the general robustness of design - you won't nuke the camera accidentally pointing it into the sun. Mind you the Trinicon tube on a BMC-110/220 is pretty good.

Here is a German page with comparisons of the various cameras...

Also, does the machine playback tapes NOT recorded on it in bw as well, or are they colour? If the problem had been just affecting av recording and not rf, I would have suggested blowing dust away from the av treminals inside the vcr where they join the pcb as this cured a bw recording fault on av on one of my 3 hf950s, but your issue sounds psu block related.

James, re your bw recording hf100, I would suggest the fault is somewhere in the power supply. If you have a spare, or can get hold of one, try swapping it and see if that helps.

Most likely I will just scrap the other 750 as it has a lot more damage done to it - it actually HAD been dropped and apart from a bent frame it worked OK till the video heads gave up the ghost.

Well all,

The ball was in his court and he has shown what he can do. (and not do, which is change for the better)

You don't just change components and hope for the best. You make measurements to locate the faulty electronic part. Mechanical faults are easier for the average user to fix. Anyway, it's the drum motor that most often fails in Sony machines not the capstan motor.

Just kidding about the Jews..LOL

Anyway, its been me the whole time, needed to get this site worked up a bit.

I used to post quite a bit in the past.

Had a website as a lad with all the Betamax's that I owned and wished I had.

People would come and and steal my lovely pictures without asking me and post them on that filthy eBay.

My wife at the time would laugh at me for being upset about the pictures.. Even my son Timmy and daughter Laron would laugh under their breath.

I also placed items I collected as a lad, GI-Joe dolls and Barbie and a few others. .Little ashamed to mention the other's ..LOL

My wife insisted I stop playing with them or she was leaving so I shut down the Betamax website and my doll collection and left the Betamax scene ..

My kids are grown, my wife left me and I found my way back to this scene.. Even thinking of launching another Betamax website.. Dusted off a GI-Joe doll and a Barby.

Thats how I came to loving all things alive , electrical and plastic.

That's my story..I'm Timmy and ED and all the other names I used.

Just for the record, the correct regulator part number for the SL-HF860 is STK-5478.

I removed the cover from my Beta to verify.

So this will prevent all the creeps on this site who call names and say I give false info.

Tell that to Charlie who has obviously never seen an 860 and is just going by whatever he has read here over the years.

I should be really pissed that the resident evil PALchat troll is trying to fool people into thinking he's my old PALchat handle but I have yet to recieve an email from some irate person telling me to stop posting here even though the e-mail address posted was only slightly modified to prevent Nigerian spammers from hassling me. Anyway, I did dash off a complaint to the webmasters and if they doesn't care about this site, why should I?

BTW, since I still use AOL for mail and an FTP space (and for posting this message) if anyone really wants to confirm this is posting is from the "real me" just shoot off an eMail to the address above - after removing the "-lmost-n-ine" bits.

Anyway for the record, my Betamax page was taken down by Yahoo because they decided that I'd somehow violated their TOS - whereas all the dating site scammers and penis pill peddlers haven't. At any rate, I really don't feel like going through the hassle of putting the site back together and I've since moved onto another web project but I still have and enjoy my collection of Betamax and Betacord VCRs and cameras.

Sadly I don't do much taping anymore as there really isn't anything good on TV and what TCM movies I do record, I record on DVD now - incedentally I highly reccommend the Magnavox MWR 1006. Even their 6 hour mode looks pretty good. Too bad nobody had a 4 1/2 hour mode for people looking to dump L750 BIII recordings straight to DVD.

Louis,

This is exactly what I feared.

"Boby" and "olive" report here under aliases and continue the divisiveness.

I've tried countless times to end this ridiculous personal attack (they have even gone so far as to post my address) but to no avail.

I have begged Kevin to come back and contribute in light of the dried up supply of Sanyo belts in the U.K...but it seems he has decided to turn his back on this chaos created by a couple of "members".

We can only hope that Boby of Indonesia and Olive of Chicago turn to stamp collecting or riding buses and leave us in peace.

I only pray so....Snail, formerly Ed Beta

Louis,

Yes, there has been a great deal of acrimony among various posters on this site.

As Noel mentioned, several offerings by individuals named "Boby" and "Olive" WERE removed. The language and subject matter was vile and totally un-called for.

They have mellowed out in recent times, so it appears all is well. I attribute there melt-downs to personal problems that have nothing to do with something innocuous as "betamax".

I, also, may have also caused some chaos due to my asking questions in a less than courteous manner.

Thanks, Noel, for accurately reporting what has gone on here.

If someone wishes to read what has been written here...I have kept them. If I re-post them they probably won't last long.

Hopefully, it will stay as it has been of late for years to come.

Don't know about numbers but the Japan Home Market EDV-9000 was available up to the end of Betamax VCR production by Sony back in 2002. By then Sony was only putting out a couple thousand Beta units a year and there was the also the SL-200D (JHM equivelent of the US SL-HF2000) model being made.

Just wondering how many ED Betas were made because at the time (1988) they were very costly around $1700 to $ 3000 and I don't think that you find one very easily if you did want one, the one I picked up is almost mint even down to the little stickers for the wood sides, I plan on keeping it as long as I can

Michael , Very nice site, well done.

BTW, NOEl, can't you just do the same as Michael did.

You always have a twist and a reason for someone to email you personal for help $$$

His site has no reason to buy each belt and measure and go through all kinds of crap to eventually email and send you money.

Thanks Mike, great help.

Where's K .Lambert? He is our resident Sanyo expert. Perhaps he can add even more sources for what appears to be a dwindling supply. It really appears this could be the beginning of the end for our beloved Betamax VCR's. Even the stupid rubber belts are "drying up" (just kidding).

Bad luck about UK suppliers,

Belt kits are still available in Australia from Wes Components. See http://www.wescomponents.com/ The kits don't weigh much so international postage should not be a problem and Wes even sell individual belts. The kits are all called VBK series and are after market ones so you will have to quote the make and model of your machine or check their internet catalogue. For individual belts you might need to quote dimensions.

Human nature being what it is, means we often don't say thanksenough.

Thanks for all those behind the scenes who provide The Betamax Chatpage. I can't think of anything ever to complain about. Often those who complain the loudest contributethe least. Continue as long as you enjoy it. I can't speak for all but Isuspect the vast majority will agree and will be sad when youfinally announce you are giving this site up. Hopefully not foranother 10 years or so.

Thanks - thanks a hundred times - for the effort you put into thePalsite.
