Mike, The place to buy a brand new head cleaning tape here in the states is MisterBetamax.com -- I've never bought anything off of this site but it's been around awhile and he has new ones (19.95).Go easy with the head cleaner.

Hi guys,

Heads for many mono beta machines, belt kits etc are still available in Australia.

Try "Wes Components" in Sydney or Speedy Spares in Melbourne.

Kevin,

Curiously, I have a "super donor spares Beta", yet only containing the PSU and a couple of boards. Remaining components had a new and better life in other vcrs. Its a SL-F30.

Mick:Try visionaids (they incorporate Telepart and Economic devices).Mind you i did'nt get a reply from my last recent query. Are things really getting that bad?there is also that company in Ireland.Donberg electronics who do still have spares for some models (or did.

Cheryll. Why would your father run a digital television through his Sanyo vcr?Far better to feed a digital Freeview box through the Sanyo 5150(using the BNC/Phono connections on the rear, NOT RF) and then to the digital flat screen.

Gabriel: Thanks for that info.Indeed for some spares a 'spares vcr' is the ONLY way to get them.

Mick,

New spares for Betamax are really difficult to find. I always replace faulty parts with "donor" or previously refurbished ones (excepting belts for Sanyo or Sony C7 ). I have only a new set of heads for Toshiba (from an old shop retail).

Noel and Kevin,

Ive been following your advice related to the motor "hall sensors" (they are magnetoresistors). Now I have 4-5 units from a couple capstan motors I had. Curiously, there are two different designs for the capstan in the 711b chassis (in this case, the SL-C30 ). One of them has 2 sensors, the other has 3. I attach a picture showing the differences:

http://tinypic.com/r/i2vntc/5

Also, note the position of the coil switching transistors.

Right now Im fixing a SL-HF150 with drum motor and vumeter issues. I will post the result when finished.

Regards,

/Gabriel

My elderly uncle is an enthusiast of Beta Max machines but is having a problem with his Sanyo VTC 5150. Since the change over to digital he cannot get a clear TV channel when he runs it through his Betamax (His TV is digital flat screen). He has tried to use a small screwdriver in the channel adjuster but doesn't think it is moving. He asked me to try and buy a "special" screwdriver but as no one on the sites I have surfed mention a special tool, I am assuming that a normal "watchmakers" screwdriver should work. Any suggestions that I can pass on - bearing in mind I am a complete novice!

Hi Davy and Gabriel:

Yes indeedy those 'hall effect'sensors on most (if not all ) beta's that use them in their motor design are compatible.Davy: I have successfully got the 950 PSU issues sorted out.A total of 13 caps,1 x fusible resistor,2 X transistors and one wire link were all damaged/faulty.The other issues ( apart from the caps) were indeed CAUSED by the capacitors going bad.Replacing a fuse over and over ,to 'get it going again' must've made it worse! Most vcr's now, especially Beta's will need their caps checking and quite a few changing now in order to prevent other parts going bad.I always check them all in the PSU.

Noel,

Thanks a lot for the tips. I will have a go and see the results. However, I think it's a servo issue. Turning RV303 (original position previously marked) the motor stabilises but image "jitters" up and down at random.

Another question: sensors on the reel table (under the motor magnet) are compatible with drum hall effect? They could be a good source of spares.

Gabriel

Hi Paul

I have some replacement batteries for myself to rebuild the NP11.With a view to offering this serviceto anyone who required them laterSadly It does cost though as i had to source them from the US.I have as yet to assemble them but they will last longer than original and the charge up useage will be better too.Just to let you know it can be done.

I have a Betamovie camcorder (BMC-100p) Unfortunately the battery died many years ago and still refuses to charge up and I am having difficulties finding someone to rebuild it.

I bought a Hitachi SVHS camcorder with charger and battery (the camcorder is faulty). The camcorder uses 9.6v power to run. Could I use the SVHS camcorder battery wire it for use with the Betamovie? I miss filming with the BMC-100p

Regards

Paul

Ultravixen:

It's more than likely the 'mode switch' that is giving you these problems.A very common issue ,especially VHS models from 1992 onwards. If you e-mail me at my contact address,we can discuss this further.I tried replying to your e-mail contact but it seems you've spelt it wrong as it does'nt excist/bad protocol( typo?)

Kevin,

That worked.

Ultravixen,

Regarding the precious tape stuck in an SVHS machine. Most machines have a tip in their service manuals on how to remove a tape when the normal mechanicals do not respond.

You could take the cover off (with power removed) and see if you can gently take the tape off the guides so that it is just laying out of the cassette but not trapped by the guides. You may then be able to manually operate a spool from below to pull the excess back into the cassette. Once the tape is safely inside the cassette try to more the shaft of the motor which operates the tape load/unload to see if you can get the tape out.

Most tapes are seriously damaged by people not getting the slack tape untangled an back in the cassette.

Most machines are damaged beyond repair by people trying the above and doing it badly rather than taking them to a service agent.

Since you have two machines maybe you should observe how the other works when putting a tape in and out assuming it does not also have a load fault. You could even practice with a not so precious tape.

cheers Noel
