So, I am looking for either another C6 or any other Front Loader. God knows why but, I just prefer the front loader to the top loader lol. Thanks

Hi Alex

Glad you got the issued solved with the DC-DC converter and the tape path. :)

Regarding the Stereo light on the front. It should not light whenever you do a linear recording on the SL-C9 or other Beta VCRs. The pilot light is only for factory recorded tapes in linear stereo. If the light goes on and off then there could be some issues with the detection circuit on the TU-24 board. Around IC201 there is sitting 4 Tantalum caps 0,47F 16V, try replacing those and see if the pilot light turns off.

Hi all Thanks Emil for the post, after cleaning the tape path and scrubbing the pinch roller now all sorted, also just changing the electrolytics fixed the display now nice and bright. Now though however the stereo light comes on for two seconds then off then on for another two seconds then dead for the rest of time unless the power is switched off at the mains. However stereo is recorded and played back, this isn't a biggy but It would be nice to fix if it dosent entail much

Hi Alex

How does the image look on the screen? Does the sound have flutter on it? It could be bad capacitors on the Capstan board. Or maybe a defective Hall element on the capstan board as well making the speed unstable. But also check if the pinchroller is correctly engaged and doesnt mangle the tape. And check the ACE head. Give it a good clean. :)

If you need parts for the DC-DC converter, you can purchase all the transistors on Ebay. I recommend using the store called Little-Diode. Do NOT try with substitute transistors. They simply wont work. Replace the electrolytic caps as well, using 105C good quality brand.

Good luck reviving the C9. I got 2. One silver and one black. :)

If you need service manual, then i have it. Contact me by mail.

Kind regards

Emil

OK, another issue to put past all of you, recently acquired a SL-C9, this has the usual DC-DC issue which i am rebuilding, however this is a weird issue i have never seen before, when on play, the picture is terrible and the sound is likewise, however on any other speeds, frame, 1/10, 1/5, x2 ect it shows the image fine. What could this be ?

Ok I have solved the problem with the low volume on the SL-3000, In this case it was the switch that is for record, the contacts were dirty. No doubt due to not been used for many years and been stored in a shed.

Hi Guys:

Another thing that can cause low audio is the main audio IC.I've seen that in Sony C6 's and Sanyo M40 's (for the mono sound). It could also be the alignment and head azimuth.

Hi James

Is the Audio "muffled" or is it just low in volume?

The ACE head have a tendency of being worn before the videoheads, so i recommend always to remove it from the fasten screws and give it a good scrub and polish. Do not temper with the azimuth controls.

If the Audio is low in volume, then take a look at the audio part of the thing. Its a simple circuit, and there is a gain pot in order to increase the volume. A service manual will be handy. :)

Hi. I live in the States. I have just acquired a Sony SL-8200 NTSC. I am wondering if there is a PAL equivalent to this model to see if I can find a way to bring it back to life. Any help, suggestions, etc., would be greatly appreciated. And, do the PAL and NTSC models use the same belts? Does anyone know of a resource for new old stock replacement belts? Thanks!

Hi, All, after fixing the other issues with my SL-HF950, it still has the issue of the transport being dead and no action on the skate. Once the machine is on fully, the head spins as it should, after that nothing, the eject and open close buttons do nothing, with a tape manually inserted, when play or other transport is selected, the reel motors turn a little one after the other then the transport light goes out. I believe it is related to the SS-50 board but got no idea where to start ?Any Ideas

Ampex 198 is known to be problematic and prone to 'sticky tape syndrome'. You will need to get the tapes treated before you can play them. And you probably find that the machines you used for testing will need to have the heads cleaned too. Neither is complicated if you know what to do. Where are you situated?

Hi!

Having a bit of trouble with some AMPEX BETACAM 198 BC-20 tapes (red ones from 1987). Tried on multiple machines. Getting ERROR messages up the wahzoo (usually while rewinding). Not sure if it's because the tapes are just old or if I'm doing something wrong here. Machines are a Sony BVW-70 and a Sony PVW 2600.

Also, does the color of the tape mean anything?

Thanks in advance!BM

The problem with your Sanyo 5150 is common to that model. It is to do with heat/temp change.Sanyo upgraded the earthing type from the VTC 5000 model (which does'nt suffer as much,if at all with that)by installing a second earthing strap. What i always do is remove the metal bracket (by removing the screw) and slide it off the head amp can. Then bend the two tail ends of the bracket( that slide over the can) slightly inwards. This enables a better contact and more reliable result. I've not had any issues return this way.Good luck...............Kevin

HELLO all! I have an issue with a Sanyo VTC5150 which seems to be getting worse: at times, the picture seems to suffer from a 'fish-scales' effect (noticeable horizontal wavy lines), and is much worse on tapes which are past their best. The problem can be more or less cured by pressing down on the shield plate over the head drum, and/or pressing down on the metal bracket which contacts the top of the VP-1 PCB...is this some sort of earth/shielding fault?Any help appreciated, and if I can offer any information to anyone from the VTC5150 service manual, please let me know, as I have recently acquired one.Cheers.

Hi

I would NEVER recommend using one of those "wet type" cleaning tapes on a VCR. If you use to much fluid, there is change it will get stuck on the drum. And cause damage to delicate heads.

If you use Older tapes branded tapes that flakes a little or is dirty, i would look for a Tape Rewinder. (I have always used a Rewinder on my Beta tapes) Due to machine keeps the tape laced around the drum. Many video tape rewinders offer a "Cleaning" option of the tape.

Clean your VCR manual. There is a guide on this very page how you handle that. Otherwise if you insist using a cleaning tape, use the Non wet types. They come from Sony & Maxwell.

A gentleman called Mr. Betamax also supply those, along with good quality branded tapes.

Kind regards

Emil

NoelThe problem is not the first board, it is the second within the heat sink tin, this takes in 12v and converts to 6v AC, 48v dc and 32v dc if memory serves. The 12V supply section of the Power supply is working fine. The board looks in a bad shape and looks like it has been tampered with before so a complete replacement would be preferred,

Alex,

Its OK I found your request telling me its an SLHF950UB on another site.

There is another way to solve your problems, just throw that old board away.

That main AC/DC board converts down to 12V at a maximum of 4Amps required for the DC/DC convertor board that does the rest. Thee are efficient outboard laptop computer 240VAC/ 12V DC switch mode supplies that can do the job for you available on eBay.

You just need to mount a 2.1mm DC socket on the rear of the SLHF950 and connect that trough to the white plug that connects to the next board. Either use the socket off the main board to make a lead or cut off the original plug and solder to extend the wiring. Then plug in the external supply to get the machine back into operation.

You can mount the supply in the space left from the part you took out but that requires more work and you can get coupling effects and interference from the switchmode supply to the tuner. AS you don't have analogue TV anymore that might not be an issue.

Hi guys,

Bit of an update with my SL-HF100 It seems the problem is bigger than I thought There is no audio on the Video in as well as no audio on the RF in and output.SO far I have replaced the RP-17 board with no change. I had used parts to get this working originally and the machine plays ok via the video outputs, if something was connected wrong one would think that it would not playback properly? I just need to trace the connections in relation to the audio inputs.

I also have upmost respect for the founders of the site, and recently suggested to them ways to improve via email and got no response, soon their will be no point if it gets as bad as the u matic section. Settings are required such that people have to be verified before allowing posts to stop this extreme spamming !

You think this section has a problem? Look at the U-matic section, has been like that for nearly a week now.

As someone who manages an on-line forum, it is really not that hard to manage who can post if you set it up properly.I very much appreciate the Palsite managers and have been reading and answering for years, but this neglect is not making it easy to keep doing that.

hi to everyone i tried using the archive pages because there was a post i think by someone called bill ,who pointed out that on his sony 950 /he found a certain resistor / capacitor if he touched it with his finger the colour fault disapeared for a while he said what part it was and mentioned its location and value if anyone remembers this could it be relisted again what it was so i can view the details as a 950 i own i think has the same problem and i would like to try this as a possible fix.

Hi Update on my SL-HF100UB, Found out that the issue which I have with AU showing when the on button is pressed and no activity is not due to the power supply, when GND and Power On are shorted it comes alive, so it now points to the TM-54, TM55 Board, anyone ideas on what is causing this, also the VFD is dim, what to look at for this, the power supply is precisly providing 12v and 9v as I just set them.

Thanks Alex

Hi All, my Sl-HF100 has started playing up and I suspect the power supply and Timer board to be abit dodgey, it would help if anyone had a parts machine to offer, say one with mechanical problems that I could use, it would be nice also to have a top cover with the blue label, my top has had it removed, if you could help please don't hesitate to message me,

ThanksAlex (UK)

I purchased a Sony Hifi Betamax SL HF860d. An awesome machine but it has some problems. When I load a tape (with the cover off)and press play the tape on the right hand side (facing the machine) bunches up and ultimately jams. Most forums say it could be the pinch roller. But the pinch roller works smooth and spins freely and when I manually put tension on it and press play the problem still occurs. Any other ideas? I can send pictures of the problem.

i have a nec model no PVC764, and am trying to fix it. the tape loads, but when it has loaded the loading motor keeps on going, then stops in fault mode after a few secconds. the machine has to be turned off then on again to eject the tape. i cannot find any schematics for this machine on the web, has anyone had this fault before and found the cure? thanks.

Hi, I just got out my SL-C5 UB (kept clean and dry in a cupboard) which probably has not been used for 10 years, but previously worked 100%. Sound is great, but the picture on all tapes I tried is wobbly or shakey, although complete with no break up. It is the same on both RF and Video out. Has anyone any ideas? Is it due to the missing analogue TV signal upseting synchronisation? Is there a small adjustment needed? Thanks in anticipation.

Betamax SL-C7. In Quick Fault Guide, fault "No colour in playback & e-e modes", solution "Suspect failure of IC6 [CX1301]".What means "e-e modes"?Can someone show diagram showing electronic circuit with IC6? Replacing this IC6 solves the problem? Are these IC6 still available? Specifications, brand, etc.?All help is welcome.Thanks.

Hi,

I have a Sony Betamax similar to this :

http://www.jonathanen.com/pages/Bedroom/VCRs/Sony/Betamax/SL-800ME/SL800ME1a.jpg

I do not know what type of cables I should use to output the video to the tv. In the back, there are to types of output : one looks like the old antenna output, and the other one is called "Multi Output".

Can you please guide me in what cable I should buy in order to get this work.

Thanks

I have a box of 20 or more BETAMAX Cassettes that contain TISWAS and OTT episodes recorded back in 1981 / 1982 they are all in good condition and would be good for a collector. I have them transfered to DVD so no longer need the cassettes and they are taking up space if anyone like to make an offer. I may post but buyer would have to pay all postage / packing costs. prefer collection.

Hello there

First off, it is so great finding this website whare people genuenly seem to still care about the old video formats, and it indeed is a plessure reading all of these mesages from various enthusiasts who all seems to know what they are talking about.

Well, I am in the process of upgrading all of my video equipment, and I would actually like to be able to play back all of the old formats. I have often stumpled apon various programmes on the old formats that has been for sale various places, however I havent made any purchases, as I didnt have the equipment to play back the tapes. Well, I want to do something about that now, which is why I am posting here. I am looking for working mashines to play back most formats, that goes both for betamax, U-matic, betacom, and I am actually also am looking for a top of the range VSH/SVHS-machine to replace my old model, which is rubbish.

I've been noticing that some times people on here are actually selling these old gems, so I thaught I'd chime in with a mesage about my needs. I'd like to get my hands on a perfect working Betamax model, prefurebly the:http://www.palsite.com/950ovi.htmlOr a equivalent model. I would also like to have the option of playing back both pal and NTSC tapes, however it doesnt seem as if the sony can handle both tv-standarts?Please drop me a line if you have a working machine you'd like to sell. Again, I am not able to fix these myself, so I'd rather purchase a fully functioning model that has been fixed by an expert.

Also, I am not in the UK, but postage and packing would of course be payed for.

all the best from allan

Hi there, I have a much cherished Sony SL-C7UB that I no longer have the space for. It's FREE to a good home, so long as you sort out postage or pick-up. Working condition is currently unknown, as I haven't had it plugged in for a couple of years. But the rewind has historically been very slow.

Also have something in the region of 150 beta tapes in need of a new home. These contain material from the 80s and 90s. Would hope for something back for these.

Email me for more. I'm in Scotland.

Hello all,

I now have a Sony BMC 100P. All mechanical functions work. Audio works. But it records either a black blank screen or a white blank screen. Any ideas on how to repair this will be appreciated.
