If it simply the tone that is affected then it could simply be the pinch roller that needs to cleaned or replaced.

Berrie,

Warbling audio is a different problem. Usually related to aging capacitors.

It changes the bias voltage setting of the capstan servo and also affects the tracking adjustment range. Replace the capacitors in those areas and reset the bias voltages should fix it.

Oh, good news this chat is working again. It's so useful.

Right now I have a Sony SL-C80 (same chassis 711B as SL-C30, I guess) mixing the "test signal" and the tape signal on aerial output. When the machine is cold, the image is perfect, but as soon as the video gets warmer, the image distorts and finally "test signal" is on the screen. I have checked the switch button on the upper panel, even desoldering it, with no results.Any idea on this? Thanks in advance guys.

Thanks Noel, I will check the resistor. I've also noticed that the audio playback is changing in pitch. (video picture is good) The tracking does not have any effect on it. What could be the problem?Berrie

Hi, Welshbay, I have a collection of over 700 movies , 200 documentaries, almost 7,500 musical video clips and almost 300 concerts in S-beta format, all in hi-fi, stereo quality. Although I transferred a lot of this material to digital recordings, I still like to watch the original material from time to time. Is this satisfying answer to your question ?

Berrie?

Regarding the SLC40E. The problem is most likely a blown fuse on the windings of the brake solenoid.

If you take off the base cover and look at the back of the reel assembly.

See the back of the reel assembly from underneath and you should notice the solenoid pull in and hold in play rewind or fast forward mode.

If it does not trace back the leads to the connector take it off and check for resistance continuity. If its does not measure resistance between all pins then the fuse is blown. This is mounted just under the surface of the blue tape surrounding the brake solenoid. If you cant get a replacement thermal fuse then replace the fuse with a quarter watt 10 ohm resistor.

Fabrizio,

Regarding the broken plastic slide in your SLHF950 machine. I have repaired such two machines with broken slides like this in the following manner, Cut the edge of the slide where it is broken so that it forms a neat right angle with the chassis its mounted on. Remove the section going back from there to the rear of the machine. Using aluminium sheet fashion a suitable right angle replacement for the broken plastic section, drill holes and fix it with screws to the chassis centre plate to support the carriage again and the tension of the slide lever. If possible make the edge of the new aluminium section lock and support the plastic where they join.

I know this works and such damage is common if the machine has been dropped when transported without the three transit screws fitted as per the owners manual instructions.

As the C7 is so old you may have to remove the old belts and try to lay them in a circle.Measure the inner and outer diameter and also belt thickness.Allow for a few millimeters for stretching with the old belt. Then do a search for said drive belts.

The Sanyo VTC 5400 (i'm assuming that's the model in question?)It will need most belts (thinner ones ) replaced the larger ones are usually fine. There is also a mod for this model ( and the 5300) whereby you file down a sharp rounded cam on the loading ring, to overcome extra torque the tape loading ring usually has to overcome. This is best down by someone who knows about these things. Where are you based?

Gary,

See betaheaven.com for my contact details. I have new original SONY SLHF150 heads and they can be adapted to work in an SLHF100 by removing one of the two position sense magnets to make it the same as the HF100 assembly.

There are probably still SLF30 heads available from Wagner in Sydney Australia.

Thanks for putting things right on the Chat page.

To the question about converting tapes using a Sony SLT30ME. It should automatically select the right mode on playback. The mode the Canopus records in also needs to be set manually. I have tried to record NTSC tapes being played back using the canopus 300 but got only got black and white picture and had to use a Conia DVD recorder instead so they might not work that well in other than their native mode.

Oh, and I have a slight problem with my SLHF 100. it had a brand new video head installed in 2010 just before I bought it, when playing back a tape there are lots of criss cross lines on the picture where solid colours are, recordings are even worse with little white blip dots every few seconds on random parts of the picture. When recordings made on this VCR are played in a different beta the criss cross lines are much reduced but still visable. Could all of the caps in the psu be to blame? The hi fi sound is not affected. Baffling. Richard.

Hi Alex

Glad you got the issued solved with the DC-DC converter and the tape path. :)

Regarding the Stereo light on the front. It should not light whenever you do a linear recording on the SL-C9 or other Beta VCRs. The pilot light is only for factory recorded tapes in linear stereo. If the light goes on and off then there could be some issues with the detection circuit on the TU-24 board. Around IC201 there is sitting 4 Tantalum caps 0,47F 16V, try replacing those and see if the pilot light turns off.

Hi all Thanks Emil for the post, after cleaning the tape path and scrubbing the pinch roller now all sorted, also just changing the electrolytics fixed the display now nice and bright. Now though however the stereo light comes on for two seconds then off then on for another two seconds then dead for the rest of time unless the power is switched off at the mains. However stereo is recorded and played back, this isn't a biggy but It would be nice to fix if it dosent entail much

Hi Alex

How does the image look on the screen? Does the sound have flutter on it? It could be bad capacitors on the Capstan board. Or maybe a defective Hall element on the capstan board as well making the speed unstable. But also check if the pinchroller is correctly engaged and doesnt mangle the tape. And check the ACE head. Give it a good clean. :)

If you need parts for the DC-DC converter, you can purchase all the transistors on Ebay. I recommend using the store called Little-Diode. Do NOT try with substitute transistors. They simply wont work. Replace the electrolytic caps as well, using 105C good quality brand.

Good luck reviving the C9. I got 2. One silver and one black. :)

If you need service manual, then i have it. Contact me by mail.

Another thing that can cause low audio is the main audio IC.I've seen that in Sony C6 's and Sanyo M40 's (for the mono sound). It could also be the alignment and head azimuth.

Hi James

Is the Audio "muffled" or is it just low in volume?

The ACE head have a tendency of being worn before the videoheads, so i recommend always to remove it from the fasten screws and give it a good scrub and polish. Do not temper with the azimuth controls.

If the Audio is low in volume, then take a look at the audio part of the thing. Its a simple circuit, and there is a gain pot in order to increase the volume. A service manual will be handy. :)

Kind regards

Hi guys,

I have a Sony SL-3000 with very low sound, could this be the audio heads or a component gone bad?

Hi. I live in the States. I have just acquired a Sony SL-8200 NTSC. I am wondering if there is a PAL equivalent to this model to see if I can find a way to bring it back to life. Any help, suggestions, etc., would be greatly appreciated. And, do the PAL and NTSC models use the same belts? Does anyone know of a resource for new old stock replacement belts? Thanks!

I have a Sony SL-C5UB which is still in working order, apart from the usual unreliable re-wind problem. Is anyone interested in making an offer for it?

Hi, All, after fixing the other issues with my SL-HF950, it still has the issue of the transport being dead and no action on the skate. Once the machine is on fully, the head spins as it should, after that nothing, the eject and open close buttons do nothing, with a tape manually inserted, when play or other transport is selected, the reel motors turn a little one after the other then the transport light goes out. I believe it is related to the SS-50 board but got no idea where to start ?Any Ideas

Ampex 198 is known to be problematic and prone to 'sticky tape syndrome'. You will need to get the tapes treated before you can play them. And you probably find that the machines you used for testing will need to have the heads cleaned too. Neither is complicated if you know what to do. Where are you situated?

Hi!

Having a bit of trouble with some AMPEX BETACAM 198 BC-20 tapes (red ones from 1987). Tried on multiple machines. Getting ERROR messages up the wahzoo (usually while rewinding). Not sure if it's because the tapes are just old or if I'm doing something wrong here. Machines are a Sony BVW-70 and a Sony PVW 2600.

Also, does the color of the tape mean anything?

Thanks in advance!BM

Hi all! I've managed to get my hands on a SONY BETAMAX C7. The machine is in perfect condition in and out, except for a wobbly horizontal picture on playback. I've removed what seems to be a BLUE SANYO CAPACITOR .47 / 25, and the picture is now perfect but I have a wobbly sound. Can anyone help me with sourcing a replacement capacitor, or advise me if there's anything else wrong? Kind regards, Craig.

Can we shut down the U-matic page? It is getting embarrassing that nobody cares enough about it to actually clean it up.The childish spamming has been going on for some weeks now.

Kevin, many thanks for that. This is the same machine that you serviced for me a VERY long time ago, and it is still doing the business...another testament on this site to your preservation skills!By the way, do you do any repairs on PCB's, specifically for Video2000 format recorders?Cheers.

Philip:

The problem with your Sanyo 5150 is common to that model. It is to do with heat/temp change.Sanyo upgraded the earthing type from the VTC 5000 model (which does'nt suffer as much,if at all with that)by installing a second earthing strap. What i always do is remove the metal bracket (by removing the screw) and slide it off the head amp can. Then bend the two tail ends of the bracket( that slide over the can) slightly inwards. This enables a better contact and more reliable result. I've not had any issues return this way.Good luck...............Kevin

HELLO all! I have an issue with a Sanyo VTC5150 which seems to be getting worse: at times, the picture seems to suffer from a 'fish-scales' effect (noticeable horizontal wavy lines), and is much worse on tapes which are past their best. The problem can be more or less cured by pressing down on the shield plate over the head drum, and/or pressing down on the metal bracket which contacts the top of the VP-1 PCB...is this some sort of earth/shielding fault?Any help appreciated, and if I can offer any information to anyone from the VTC5150 service manual, please let me know, as I have recently acquired one.Cheers.

Hi everyone

Just thaught I'd share this with you:http://cgi.ebay.de/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=111082489382#description

This guy had 2 of these machines, I got the first of them and can onnestly say that it really really is in top condition with no scuf-marks what soever! He does ship abroad if you ask, so if there should be anyone inhere that would be intrested in this top model in like new condition, then I'd start bidding if I were you.

And no no I am not afiliated with the seller at all, I am simpley just a happy buyer thinking I would spred the news, now that he actually has 2 of these for sale!

All the best from Allan

Hi

I would NEVER recommend using one of those "wet type" cleaning tapes on a VCR. If you use to much fluid, there is change it will get stuck on the drum. And cause damage to delicate heads.

If you use Older tapes branded tapes that flakes a little or is dirty, i would look for a Tape Rewinder. (I have always used a Rewinder on my Beta tapes) Due to machine keeps the tape laced around the drum. Many video tape rewinders offer a "Cleaning" option of the tape.

Clean your VCR manual. There is a guide on this very page how you handle that. Otherwise if you insist using a cleaning tape, use the Non wet types. They come from Sony & Maxwell.

A gentleman called Mr. Betamax also supply those, along with good quality branded tapes.

Kind regards

Emil

Hi I have a VTC5000 which I did a full mechanical overhaul on and it worked fine afterwards but the clock was flickering. So I replaced the faulty electrolytic that was causing it and now the power supply appears to be dead. Has anybody got a circuit diagram of the PSU please ?
