Kevin,

Funny thing about the Sanyo units that seem to go high in back tension is it can cause a screeching audio tone due to setting up a feedback oscillation where the tension arm quivers.

The Sony machines usually go low in back tension except for the SLC9 which uses a different design.

cheers Noel

Celia, there are many places where a Betamax tape can be transferred to DVD or something like that. The big question is: where are you based?

I have a precious Betamax tape of a Songs of Praise recorded at our church at least 25 years ago.Is there anyone out there who could transfer it onto a DVD? My television man does not know of anyone who still has a Betamax machine and my old one was irreparable unfortunately. Celia Picken

Noel:

Whilst I agree with you about not normally going out of tolerance suddenly, I have seen numerous occasions whereby some have fiddled with this area and put things out quite badly.

The back tension on 99% of the ones I've seen has been fine too.

If it ha been out it's been slightly too high rather than slack.

Lars,

Another thing which greatly effects the level of recovered audio is the tape back tension being low. Dirty heads would be the most common as the other settings should not go out of alignment suddenly.

Oh and lastly a worn head (more probable with a fully laced at all times Sony,NEC or Toshiba).

Lars:

Would need to know make and model number?

Common issues for poor sound.....

Sound IC faulty.

Poor audio head azimuth (tilt).

Poor sound head tape path alignment.

Damage to the edge of the tape.

The sound output/bias needs a tweak.

Hi James, looking at the rear view image on the PALsite tech page for the SL-800ME, it should also have a BNC video connector?

http://www.palsite.com/sl800tech.html

BNC to RCA converters are easy to come by:

I have an 800 -ME and a bunch of old home movies. I am hoping to transfer them to hard drive for editing, and I have been asked if the 800ME is still working as the video transfer firm normally doesn't use Betamax. Apparently it is, mechanically. I can get a poor audio sound but no picture. This was before the red/white/yellow interconnectors. On the back of my machine I have a very old aerial type socket and a sound socket. That appears to be it. Any advice or help much appreciated.

Hi

If you do an internet search for 'owners manuals' there are a few sites who will allow you to download a PDF file of the vcr (or any item you require) you want for a small payment.

Martin:

Congrats on getting the bids and attention for your unique Sony.

Sadly the watchers can be good or bad thing.I've had 24 watching one of my items on one occasion and only one bid on it!

Some just like to see what the model get's in the hope if they have one for offer they can justify a high price.

The only thing which can do that in my opinion is,a full proper service, item in near immaculate shape, complete with all accessories in same condition, even the box.

Good luck, I don't think you'll be disappointed, (that's until, the seller fees come in :()

Just a quick update on my eBay sale of the SONY HF950 recorder - the auction ends tomorrow (Sat) and there has been quite a bit of traffic (over 400 individual views & currently over 50 watchers). Don't miss out if you are interested:
