I recently acquired a Sony BVU-800 for my audio production studio. I can't seem to get the onboard TC reader / display to show the LTC that;s on the tape. My audio workstation slaves to the LTC timecode, but the onboard reader on the front just shows an arbitrary counter #. What do I need to make the two correlate? Thanks, Jeff

Hi Steve,

I just dug out an old VO-4800 while having a clearout and can tell you a little about the batteries I have here. The are made by Chloride-Gates Energy and the model is Cyclon 60. They are in a plastic box which mesures 124mmx67mmx67mm and have a 100mm flying lead terminated in a 2.1mm dc power plug.

Inside the box are 6 cells of approx D size and a small pcb. The pcb has a piece of 20A fuse wire and nothing else. The cells themselves are Chloride CYCLON's and are marked as 2 Volts 2.5Ah so are probably Pb-Sn (Lead-Tin).

This type of battery pack is a breeze to make yourself and you could also take advantage of modern battery technology and use 10 Ni-Mh (Nickel-Metal-Hydride)cells that do not suffer from memory effects. I would be tempted to just buy some tagged Ni-Mh cells from CPC, an inline fuse holder and a 2.1mm power plug. You should be able to make a pack with nearly twice the capacity, probably about 4500mAh, in the same package size.

The only drawback is you wont be able to use the original charger as this will be a constant voltage charger and modern cells require a constant current charger.

You can still get Pb-Sn cells, and make a pack compatable with your charger, from http://www.strikalite.co.uk at about £5.30 each cell compared to about £2.50 a cell for 3500mAh Ni-Mh from CPC.I wouldn't bother trying to find an original battery as Pb-Sn cells have a short shelf life if stored in a dischared state so even if you find one you will probably end up having to replace the cells. Hope this info is helpfull to you.

Cheers, Brett

JMThe VO-8800 needs a good quality supply of 1,5 amp. But if you connect a camera to the recorder you need to check how much the camera uses. Use a good quality power supply. I use a 5 amp CB supply with a VO-8800 and Panasonic WV-F700. This supply runs to hot although it is rated for 5 amp. continuously and 7 amp. peak! So I am on the look out for a better quality supply.

As it started to go dark I expected the KY17 to out perform the M3 but what I didn't expect was the old Sony camcorder to run rings around the KY17 in failing light. I may have to have a re think !!

Hi, Just discovered this site. I've got a pile of old PORTABLE U-matics to clear. There are 5 (five) BVU 50 525/NTSC machines which were working last time they were run-up, which was several years ago, and have blue Kangaroo cases. There is 1 (one) BVU 110 525/NTSC machine with BK 112 time-code generator, also with Kangaroo case...good condition but not used recently. There is 1 (one) BVU 150 625/PAL machine with time-code and Kangaroo case. Basically good condition, but due a service. Also three longish 14-pin umbilical cables and a couple of dozen U-matic tapes (both sizes and assorted lengths). Also 2 (two) BVU/14-pin backs for Sony BVP 330 camera, complete with battery box clips and 1 (one) only battery box for BP 90 or similar.I am looking for offer, preferably for the lot, but will be happy to clear individual items.I am based in South-East England (S.E.London, North Kent). E-mail me, or telephone me on 0208 462 6371 or 07860 777 687.

Steve, I used a Panasonic WV-F200 camera to a VO-8800. I assume the 8800 and 6800 uses the same 14 pin connectors. The WV-F200 uses a 32 pin connector. Does your JVC uses a 32,26,14 or 10 pin connector? I know there are adaptor leads that go from 14 pin to 10 pin and from 14 pin to 26 pin. Sometimes different brands use different pin numbers for recording function video playback/confidence etc. When you want to change connections in the connectors you must be able to work verry neatly.

You often see Sony portables with other camera's on Ebay and I often wondered were they just going video in or is there a lead available . Also has anyone out there got a lens hood that will fit on a DXC M2.

Hello, just wondering if you have had any replies regarding your post on the umatic chat page about some 1/2 portapack tape you want transferred. I assume you are talking about the older open reel format? if so I beleive the name for it is "j" format, it uses the same size tape as VHS but the recorded signal on it is totally different. These machines were only manafactured for a short time during the early- to mid 70's Anyhow I would be most certainly be able to help you with a transfer to VHS tape or other formats as I have a working machine here that play material back on with no problems. I specialise in transferring older formats, I'm located in country victoria (St Arnaud), Australia so at least I'm local and getting the tapes to me and back is not going to be a problem :) Let me know a bit more about the tapes/reels how many, and their condition and I we can come to some sort of arrangement. Look forward to hearing from you. James Paterson

Hi. I'm a big collector of old Countdown episodes particularly the ones from the 1974-1977 era. But most of the episodes from that era were deleted in the late 70's under the orders of the ABC general manager so the tapes could be re-used because the cost of video tapes doubled. So what doesn't exist in the archives might exist on home video although people with VCRs in their homes in the mid 70's is pretty rare, but schools, colleges and industries had either Philips N1500, N1501, N1502 etc. VCRs or Sony U-Matic VCRs or even reel-reel VTRS. I was wondering is there anyone here who has taped Countdown in the mid 70's on a Philips VCR or U-Matic or VTR and still have the tapes in their collection, or even know of anyone who might have 70's Countdowns on any of these tapes? If so please email me at [email protected] because I desperately want to buy copies of any early episode.

I have a number of 70's episode which I've taped from Rage Countdown repeats, however the majority of them are from the late 70's.

Also I've been doing some bin scabbing at Wollongong TAFE and pulled out 38 U-Matic cassettes and a lot of them appear to be blanks and are Scotch UCA-30 (30 minute) and UCA-60 (60 minute) cassettes and some are Video Telex KAC 60 and have some slightly smaller ones called Panasonic NV-P22S 20 minute cassettes. Now I've found a place in Sydney on the net that sells V05800 U-Matic systems and reading the specifications of that machine at U-Matic PAL site the types of tapes compatible with this player are BRS and XBR type. I'm a little confused about this, and I was wondering if any of the cassettes I mentioned such as The Scotch UCAs are compatible with the V05800?

HEllo everyone!! I NEED THE PEOPLE OF THE U-MATIC COMMUNITY TO HELP ME!!I have a BVU-820 and it has been working great. I just put a tape in the machine & it was playing. When I stop & hit rerwind on the machine, the tape fully rewinded, but it wont eject!! The eject light is on, but the tape will not eject. I've pressed the eject button and all the other buttons and nothing happens!! I opened the cover to see what's going inside, but I'm not a U-matic specialist!! I do know that the tape was in the process of ejecting, but somewhere along the way, something went wrong!!

To luke: Betacam SP has the same resolution as UMatic SP. VHS and SVHS are both much worse. Also, I'm looking for a UMatic SP deck THAT WORKS. If anyone is selling one please e-mail me.

Hi! I bought an editing controller JVC RM-88U. I would like to know what is power requirement for this unit? Where could I find a pin description of plugs? I am interested to use this unit with Betamax VCRs. I appreciate an U-matic format but it seems to me that it is very hard to find U-matic machines in my country and it might be even harder to find U-matic tapes.

Hi All,I am looking for camera cables, over 10 metres long with a power circuit and at least 2 video cables. Cables from older cameras like the JVC KY1900/2000/2700 are ideal, it does not matter what plugs they have. Please mail me if you have any for sale. Steve

I've got a REALLY OLD piece of MEMOREX EQUIPMENT. I NEED some help identifying it and what its function is. It's early electronics for sure. There is no date but does have serial number, and model number. I've also taken quite a few photos that will enable me email them to anyone whose interested. Museum quality. I believe it's some type of testing equipment. Actually sits in a portable metal carrying case. Extremely heavy 50+ pounds. Pass it on to your friends and colleagues.Don't hesitate to email me directly. I just found this board by surfing. Not sure I could find it again. Thanks for your time. Virgil

I just got my VP-5020. Whenever I play back tapes recorded on a VO-1600, the dark scenes play somewhat OK, but play as if it is a 4th generation dub. Whenever there's a bright instance, the picture completely breaks up, for example, if it's a shot of a candle in a dark room, the candle will be smeared all the way to the right, and a lot of noise will appear. Some video looks like the deck needs new heads, but I don't know. I cleaned the deck, and nothing changed. How do I determine the number of hours this thing has? I've seen some pix on ebay where the seller is holding down the counter RESET button and the hours appear. I just hope my vp-5020 isnt junk. Maybe it is the tapes? I have some really old tapes, but the ones the VO-1600 recorded were KSP-20s. They went through the machine at least 20 times, maybe that is the problem? Someone please help!

Steve, if you are going to buy a 440 make sure that you get the cables as these are unique to Sony and they are as scarce as Rocking Horse doings. The ports are parallel on the 5 series so you can only control these machines. BVU U-matics have parallel and serial ports but the parallel ports are centronics and the type 5 plugs won't fit.

Hi eveyone,I having played about with amateur VHS for a number of years I have decided to go umatic. Having sold some still equipment, rather than do the sensible thing and bank the money, I have bought a 5850 Low band and am about to acquire An RM 440 edit controller. Will the 440 only work in conjunction with 5850-5850 or 5800, or can it be used in condjuction with any other models. Also Anyone had any experiences with JVC PR8800 Highbands.

Cheers

We are a production company who are searching for a cardboard-type box that packages U-Matics instead of the traditional plastic boxes. We received one of these boxes from another company, but they no longer use it. We have searched HIGH and LOW for these boxes. We do not want a "mailer" which mails the U-Matic in a plastic box. We want to use the box as a case for the U-Matic. If anyone has ANY idea of where to get these such boxes, it would be a great deal of help. We have tried Polyline already. Thank you in advance for any help.

Thomas. The clue is in the question. As the machine does not have on board tv tuner, the socket is provided to enable composite line in from a tv source - usually from a similar connector on a Sony receiver/ monitor. There should be a switch on the vcr ( left side near the power switch) where you can select the line input from either the bnc input (phono for audio),the tv socket or the dub socket (when fitted). As the tv socket is only 8 pin there is one pair for each video in, one channel audio in, video out and one channel audio out. Of course , if all of this sounds complicated, remember that these machines date back to the days when we sent men up to the moon and eng. crews comprised twenty persons with muscles like Hercules.

Does anyone know anything about the 8 pin TV socket that can be found on the back of (old) u-matics ie VO1810 ? I poked wires into it and discovered video connections and audio links..

Tim, Don't look a gift horse in the mouth. All the years I worked with U-matic, I can never remember a machine where all the meter lamps were working at any one time. Just as a matter of interest, see how the bidding is going on a similar machine at ebay. You may be pleasantly surprised. This is the address http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1335690007

Hi all.

I've just been given a Sony VO-5850P deck, which is working perfectly, except that the lampbehind one of the audio level meters has blown. I have attempted without success to remove the front panel to try to gain access to the meter to replace the bulb, so I wondered ifanyone knows why the front panel won't come off easily, and what I have to do to get it off?

The top panel comes off no problem (4 screws), likewise the two side panels (4 screws each). I then remove the four screws holding the front panel, but there is something roughlyin the middle, under the tape slot, stopping the panel coming away. I don't want to force itbecause it is plastic and looks easy to break.

Can anyone help?

Many thanks in advance!

Tim.

Some DXC3000 camera's output Y/C. Y/C gives you roughly an extra 50 lines of horizontal resolution. I think the DXC3000 AP is the Y/C model. A VO8800 has an Y/C input. I don't know anything about otherportapacks. Some digital8 camcorders are able to be used as an analog tofirewire convertor. If your digital8 camcorder doesn't have an analog inputyou need a computer card that converts analog to firewire. The picture quality of the DXC3000 camera should be equal or better than the digital8 consumer camcorder. A disadvantage is the low sensitivity of the DXC3000. You need a lot of light for a good picture. And because it is an old camera it maybe in need of a re-alignment. If you can't find anybody who is able to do the re-alignment at a professional level, or you can't or don't want to spend too much, leave the camera as it is. Re-aligning camera's is a job for skilled technicians.

I have a BVU-800, I was using it today and noticed that the I lost audio on channel 1. The meter on the front is not bouncing, and no audio is coming out of the XLRs on the back. I checked and double checked the tapes and even in a different deck. The tape has been ruled out. Does anyone have any ideas??? Is there a quick fix or am I SOL.

Thanks for your time.

Hello! I was just wondering, what exactly is an Error 4 and 99? I have seen umatics on ebay that refuse to give up the tape but flash Error 99 or Error 4. Is there a page I can go to to see all the possible umatic errors or will someone please list them? Also, what is the PROGRAMMED OPERATION switch on the VP-5020 for? Is there a Mark In/Out switch to tell the unit where to loop? Or do i need two decks for that?
