Hi!

I recently got a real bargain ... a B and O 8802 (i think) TV for £10 ... it works like new!

Sadly being so old, it doesnt have a scart or phono input but some wierd connector i have never seen before.

Can anyone advise me on whether its possible to connect to my DVD player which only has phono out?

Replies to my email address would be greatly appreciated.

Oh, and I forgot to say that I can't get it to tune in a TV station number (I can't see the picture on screen, but guess that after the SEARCH routine I should be pressing STORE and 01, etc) When I do that though, it reverts to 00 and won't do anything.

I took my old V2000 Bang & Olufson Beocord 8802-V out of the loft and let it sit in the living room for a few hours (to avoid condensation in case it had chilled while it was in the loft). When I plugged it in, the clock and all the lights came on as normal but whenever I ask the cassette to move in any way (play, record, rewind or forward) I just get a nasty metallic-sounding chattering noise.I am also unable to tune the TV to the VCR.Any suggestions, or has this quietly died on me while it was in storage?

Hi, I have a VR2220 and a VR2120 in good conditions. I think both should work fine, but I can't assure that as I don't have cartridges V2000. If anyone is interested to them, I may be contacted at the reported E-mail ; I'm shure we will reach an agreement. In any case my tel is 0039 011 698411. My best regards to all the readers.

Can anyone help me with an n1700. I bought one new around 1977 and used it for a few years. It has been in the box ever since together with around 8 cassettes recorded from the TV at the time. With great optimism, I switched it on today and loaded a tape. It seems to fire up OK but just goes through the motions of lacing up and down and then switching off. I suspect that it might be the belts that have stretched - in the same way that mine seems to have done over the same period!

Is it possible to still get replacement belts?Failing that, is there anyone who still repairs these things (I live in Chester, UK)?Failing that, is there a reasonable copying service for this format. (I Know that one of the tapes has footage of one of my children dancing on the TV, which I would like to recover in order to embarass him)?

Could anyone tell me if this is normal, or is something about to blow.(There is also pleanty of air space above it so air-flow is not a problem)

Hi there

Just found this chat site & it looks great!

I am in Western Australia, & I used to have the Philips N1502 VCR. I still have some of the tapes with material on them, which I hoped to be able to transfer into another format, but never had the opportunity in the end.

Can anyone tell me where in Australia I may be able to get my hands one of the VCR's capable of playing these tapes?

Also, out of curiousity, what was the quality comparable with (vhs, svhs, etc..), as I recall the picture looked great?

_@_v - v-2000s were available from around 1979-85/6 so to get early 70s bbc broadcasts you'd need somebody with either a Sony u-matic (1971) or phillips vcr (1973). post-1978 broadcasts would've been recordable on betamax, vhs, or v-2000 vcrs (the three big-seller formats of that age)

I've just managed to pick up a 2nd generation V2000 Beocord 61 (Philips V2334 clone). Its suberb for playback of recordings from my VR2020 using the SCART to my TV. However, because the unit is from Germany, the RF side of things is devoid of sound due to the different varient of PAL used over there. Does anyone know of any "tweaks" inside that can modify the varient of PAL used? If not I've still got a great machine for playing existing recordings and making new ones via the AV connector. Thanks to anyone who can help!

Hi. Can anybody copy some old BBC television recordings onto VHS for me? I'm after stuff from the 70's mainly, but early 80's will do. You guys are the only people out there with stuff that goes back to the early 70's. I am mainly interested in the continuity between the programmes but having the whole programmes would be nice too. If you have any footage of the BBC Schools idents that would be especially appreciated. Drop me an e-mail if you would like to help.

Hi Nick. The head switching adjustment is on one of the three boards located to the right of the cassette carriage. I can't remember exactly which one it is now, but if you are careful, you can adjust each one in turn until you find the right one, remembering of course the exact position that each one was in. The backup battery is located on the syscon board located to the left of the cassette carriage. The battery is at the bottom of the board so is difficult to see. It is a 3.6 volt battery (no longer available), but Philips produced 2.4v and 1.2v backup batteries for their VHS vcr's and televisions which are freely available. You can solder a 2.4v and a 1.2v together to make a 3.6v battery which can be easily mounted on the board. Hope this helps. Rich..

Hi Richie, Thanks for the advice I will give it a go, with regards to head switch point how is this done and what board is the head servo board? (Probably obvious if I trace back the wiring). Thanks again for you help. Does anyone know about the memory back up supply for time and tuner as mine is lost on shutdown? Cheers Nick

Hi Nick. First of all, the heads fitted to the 2020 are slightly different to the ones fitted to the 2022. The 2022 heads were modified so they could bend further to track in picture search - something not necessary on the 2020. The 2020 head can be used in the 2022, but picture search will never be perfect because the heads can't quite bend far enough to achieve the correct tracking angle. Secondly, the head height wasn't determined with feeler guages on the early machines. If you look at the top of the head there are three screws securing a round plate through which a threaded screw protrudes. This plate determines the head height. With the plate in place, push the head gently onto the shaft, down as far as it will go. The top of the shaft will eventually contact the plate stopping the head going any lower. This is the correct height. Lastly, tighten the head onto the shaft using the screw on top of the head. Now you may be lucky and it will play ok, but you may need to alter the head switch point electronically on the head servo board to rid yourself of any noise at the bottom (or top) of the screen. Bear in mind that if there is disturbance in picture search, there is nothing you can do to stop this. Hope this helps. Rich..

Can anyone help? I have a Phillips 2020 as spares and a 2022 I wish to repair, the head on the 2022 was no longer working (cracked peizo) so I have swapped it for the one from the 2020. When I first tried the machine the picture was not bad but for a bit of distortion to the bottom of the picture, so I decided to adjust the head height and things have just got worse I either get a very bad picture that goes from black and white to colour or distortion and noise at the top or bottom of the picture. Does anyone know the correct height the head should be fitted, (maybe if I were to use feeler gauges) is the orientation of the head to the motor shaft important? Also the clock memory and tuner memory how is this done is it a battery or a capacitor? (is their a good fix for this)

To David with the VR2020 B&W problem

If the image on the screen is actually OK [other than being B/W] i.e. geometrically OK, then it's very unlikely to be anything to do with the head bearings. The fact that things go OK after 25mins or so hints that it's something related to temperature. There's probably some components on the Chroma PCB that have somehow become temp. dependant [or if you're lucky. it might just be the actual edge connector that has gone a bit dodgy]. Look for a PCB inside [if you feel happy to open the unit - but remember to switch it off - AND with V2000, wait a minute or so for the High Voltage caps to discharge] with delay line components on it [quite large blue componants, narrow and tall - there's about two or three of them on the same PCB] and remove it and re-insert it - it's worth a try. After that I'm sorry, but I don't know exactly where to look on the PCB itself to fault find.

I noticed these Philips and Grundig Video 2000 machines were popular in UK and Germany in the early 1980's. I was wondering did the Video 2000 machines ever sell in Australia and USA? I know the old 1970's Philips VCRs N1500/N1501/N1502/N1512/N1700/N1702 sold in Australia during the mid and late 70's but I never heard about any Video 2000 machines being on the Australian market.

I have recently been given some grundig 2X4super V2000 machines, none of them worked, but i managed to swap some boards around to get one working.I think there may be a problem though, i cant get a picture from the tuner when in stop mode, but i can when in recording mode and when tuning it in. I've tried swapping the tuner with another machine but it still behaves exactly the same. Could anyone tell me if this is normal, or a fault. I am asking because i know these machines are wierd -having to press 3 buttons to get it to record! and their non-standard button labels.Any help would be appreciated, thanks-Martin

To Iain - B&O Beocord 8800.

If i were you, I would have tried if it is still working. I don't know if it is 1, 5 or 10 years since it was used, but electronic equipment such as capasitors etc kan very well fail after years of storage.

If you don't intend to use it yourself, then I propose that you do advertise it for sale (or giveaway if major fault). I would not just throw it away.

Beocord 8800 is a clone of Philips VR 2020.

I have a Bang & olufsen Beocord 8800 video recorder in my loft with, I think one or possibly two blank tapes. We bought it as an ex rental unit back in 1985, and used it for years. It was in full working order when I put it away so guess it still is now.

Is this worth holding onto, or is it just scrap taking up space?

If anyone can contact, i'd be more than grateful!

Oh yes - If anyone can find a good home for it then I also have a spare Philips VR2024 machine going free. (I think this is just a rebadged Grundig 2x4 super, but no doubt someone will be able to tell me different.) I have never tried the beast, so it may or may not work. Reply to the above email address if you can find a good home. This would also have to be collected from Solihull in the next few weeks - I do not want to post it.

Hi all.

If anyone would like a bunch (about 10) of Philips N1700 machines and a big box of brand new blank VCR/VCR-LP (Not V2000) cassettes free of charge, please email me at [email protected] and they are yours for the taking. There is only one catch – They MUST be collected from Solihull in the next couple of weeks and I would rather that one person had the lot (unless I get more than one reply, and then I will split them.) As far as I know all the machines are complete, and at least some of them work to a lesser degree (However, they would all need a bit of a service at the least.) There may also be one or two VR2020 / VR2022 machines too, but I have yet to dig these machines out.

Kind regards.

Mike.

To Keith [who changed the head on 2080]

Why did you take the head of the drum in the 2220??? Why didn't you just change the entire cylinder unit [motor and all]. In my experience not only with V2000, but with Phillips VHS heads - I've had a nightmare trying to get heads lined up. Not only do you have to get the height correct, but you also need to get the position on the drum correct. When you bought a new phillips head, not only did they give you the plastic spacers [or shims] but also a small plastic peg, that you used to hold the motor stationary [from the underside of the mech], while lining up the upper cylinder, again, using a plastic peg with a marking on the drum base - this was in order to get the switching point correct.

Phillips single screw fixings heads are a nightmare and unless you know exactly what you're doing I would warn ANYONE not to mess with them. How they ever came up with the idea is beyond me, but phillips always were weird. Who else's VCR switched off after 8 mins, just while you were using it on your non-remote controlled tele to watch TV only - how irritating!! Even the old VCR1500 and 1700's unlace and switch to standby after 3 mins in 'stop' mode.

Richard,Thanks for the info. I had read about the plastic spacers so that was in the back of my mind. At the time I did move the head up and down the spindle 2 or 3 times, but it went from bad to worse. The final adjustment left it just above where it might catch. Once or twice it reduced to just 2 pictures together on the screen, but quickly returned to it's personal roll program. I will have a go later in the week. No doubt it is going to be a hit and miss affair. I'll report back on how I do.Thanks againKeith

Keith: The heads fitted in the 2840 are cut twice as narrow as the head you've replaced it with, so it will work ok in normal speed, but performance in long play won't be as good as with the original head. The reason for the jumping picture is that the head has to be mounted at the correct height. Philips used to supply two plastic spacers that were used to set the height of the heads when they were replaced, so without those it will be a hit and miss affair. You need to experiment by moving the head either up or down in the spindle. Once the head is "about right", the picture will steady and the gap you see in picture search will disappear. Rich..

Hi,

I have a Philips 2840 XP machine that I recently dug out. It worked okay for a while, but then the picture got very bad. You could ses a b & w picture behind those infamous wavy interference lines that you get from dirty heads. Problem was that no amount of careful head cleaning worked this time. I had to admit the heads had gone. I had a nonworking two part portable? philips model, (the VR2220 I think?) which I thought if I remove the head drum from that one and put it in the old machine... Practice on the old machine taught me just how easy it was to remove and place in the V2840. I powered up, an image appeared...It's working I thought, but the clear picture was rolling like the vertical hold on a TV wasn't working. Oh for a tracking control. Is there any way this can be cured. Or do the machines have incompatible video drums? The one from the V2840 had 'V' shaped heads. The V2220 has square heads. Strange thing is, if I select slow-mo, or fast mode, the picture looks fine, though with a 2cm interference line along the bottom. I would be grateful for any advice or if I had to, I would purchase another V2000 long play machine, or just a head drum for my present machine.

Regards

Grundig 2000 2 x 4

I have a 1981 Grundig 2x4 where either the tape loading mechanism or the switching has failed anyone sucessfully repaired one ? Think its beyond me - certainly without relevant bits of the service manual.

Anyone in the Lancashire area interested in the whole or parts for spares ?If not it seems destined for the dump also c20 tapes (can't remember whats on them !)

Sorry to all those who e-mailed me - but I wasn't really looking to sell my Philips VR2840 's at the moment - my message was really a reply to the message directly above it (from Steve Rowley). Just to say I had 2 of the models he was looking for. I paid quite a lot for the VR2840 's one cost me around £250 the other just under £ 200 so if I did sell them they're not going to be sold cheap !! But I still have a Philips VR2022 for spares - I've now found a new home for the Grundig 2x4 Super.

Video 2000 machines must be disposed of, five in all - two Philips and three Grundigs.

For the Philips I have a 2020 and a 2022 (I think, may need to check this). Both worked the last time they were tested but the 2022 (mine from new) has an intermittent problem where it suddenly shuts down and powers off - I have heard that this is probably a dirty relay or pcb contact, or maybe a power supply problem. The Grundig's are two - 2x4 Super's and a System 2000. The System 2000 has a problem with the cover not making the cover switch, other than this I haven't looked at it. Of the two 2x4's, one works well, the other works but has a problem with a slightly grainy picture - this has been proved by substitution to be the power supply and is probably a capacitor as this is a common fault. Just haven't had the time to do anything with them.

I have a User manual for the Philips 2022 and a User manual for the Grundig 2x4. I also have a Grundig 2x4 wireless remote control unit and I think I have a 'cable remote' for the Philips.

These units MUST be collected as they are too heavy, and too delicate, to ship by courier. Collect from my home in Hereford (lower Midlands).

£75 for the entire lot. If they were to be stripped for 'spares'then you can easily make a good profit on these.

I have a website "Search for long lost Countdown episodes from the 1970's" which is about trying to find pre-1978 episodes of the Australian pop show Countdown because most of them were deleted. My site contains info on what I know or suspect still exists in ABC archives and there is a lot of info on the 1970's Philips VCR and some info on other video formats of the 70's. Anyhow here is my website address http://web.1earth.net/~funkydud/index.html and if anyone has any rare piece of Countdown footage taped when originally aired I'd be very interested.

I had to use this board to advertise my website because it would cost me an extra $25 per month to put my website on a search engine, and seeing that messages from this board do appear on the search engine I thought this would be a good place to get my site on the search engine. I'm not a rich person so I had to find a cheaper way to advertise my site. I hope you guys don't mind. I just want my site to be known so maybe someone can come forward with some early recordings of Countdown.

Hi, I'm new to this chat page and I wonder if anyone can help me. I have a Phillips N1700, circa 1976-7 which I have had from new. It has not worked in some years, switching itself off within seconds of depressing the play button. I need to find someone who can fix it at a reasonable price.

I live in Bristol, but travel about the UK a fair bit. Can anyone help?

I owned a VR2021 for a few short months in 1994. Unfortunately after cleaning the heads, I inserted a cassette before the fluid was dry (damned impatience) and the tape got stuck to the drum. Result - broken head - dead machine.

I would like to obtain a V2000 machine of any description from anybody with one to flog in the London area. A later one would be preferred (with picture search/still, etc.)

Also, I would like to obtain any spare cassettes which anybody wants to get rid off - blank or recorded. If the tapes contain old recordings of television - especially junctions and continuity (such as start-ups, testcards, symbols, engineering information, clocks, announcements), please keep them.

EVEN IF YOU'RE NOT PREPARED TO PART WITH OLD TAPES, I WOULD BE VERY INTERESTED TO OBTAIN VHS COPIES OF ANY OF THIS TYPE OF MATERIAL. SEE WWW.THETVROOM.COM / WWW.TV-ARK.CO.UK FOR THE TYPE OF STUFF I MEAN.
