VCR 5000

Hello,

just turning back to the mysterious "VCR5000" dual use (SP/LP) VCR.These machines did exist - here in Germany, some "Landesbildstellen"had these VCRS. They were extremely expensive, a former offical told me,that they had a hefty price tag " around 10 000 DM ". But money was no matter instate dept. in the Germany of the 70s ( they bought thousands of Telefunken Bildplattenspieler for schools, museums and hospitals ), so they bought one in some Landesbildstellen. Here in my hometown, this VCR broke down in the early 90s,and because nobody could repair it, they throw it away to the trash. (!!!!)Our Landesbildstelle still has dozens and dozens of VCR I or II movies, even originals, like "Birds in spring" or " Peasants are baking bread " ( real thrillers ;-),but they have no VCRs to play them. So they were really interested that I have functionalVCR N1500 and N1702.

The VCR5000 was offered only to universities, schools, archives etc.because it was so expensive. So thats the reason, that it isnt included in the consumer catalogs I have.

As I looked at the original VCR tapes. I can remember, that the first videostoresin the mid 70s here in Germany, had tons of VCR, especially VCR-LP tapes. On fleamarkets etc, I see many betamax originals from the late 70s, evenbins upon bins of Super-8, but I only found 2 VCR-LP originals (Elvis) inten years ! Why are they soo extremely rare, much rarer than the VCRs ?

Hi Martin & Christian,

I understand that Grundig did release a dual standard VCR machine, model number VCR5000, that could record in SP or LP mode.

You could select the SP or LP mode when recording, but during playback the VCR automatically switched to the correct speed. (Just like dual speed VHS machines today).

These may have only been sold in Europe and I've never seen one for sale, so I guess today they are a super rare item. Due to the different type of heads used in SP and LP machines, I expect this model had a 4 head drum with both types of head fitted.

Hope this helps

Regards

Robin

Hello Christian :

To my knowledge there has been no N1700 SP / LP model launched or released ,but I do have a data sheet which details how to convert any N1700 VCR to add this LP mode as well as the SP at the flick of a switch ,do bear in mind that any tapes recorded like this will only play back on a modified machine.I do have a few N1700's here with this modification but as yet not tested any due to lack of belts .There are also a few boxes of cassettes here recorded in this way whch gives upto 6 hours record / play time from an LVC 180 .If you would like a photo copy of this data sheet covering all details and components needed along with diagrams please email me your address . Regards, Martin.

Hello Martin,

thanks for your fast reply. To my surprise, I never had problems with the VCR Tapes, only with the first Phlips one (orange) and some Scotchs.BASF is very reliable, and you can get many unused and still shrinkwrapped VCR tapes, sometimes at ebay.de or sometimes on flea markets.

I have the old VCR cleaning tape - without fluid.

As an expert, you may know, if a multinorm ( VCR Standard I and LP ) was released.I saw one prospect when a dealer closed his shops, he said he ordered this model, butnever got one.

Its strange, that the old VCR System has a sort of renaissance in Germany, prices are soaring and many new collectors are interested, because they grew up with thismachines.

Christian, It's best not to use the N1700 cleaning cassette to often as it has an abrasive effect on the video heads which in time will wear them out .The reason the picture is getting bad is the oxide on the old tapes is clogging the heads and leaving deposits on the tape path,Scotch ,AGFA,and the older orange colour Philips cassettes are worst,BASF and the later LVC tapes are not so bad.You have to clean the video heads and ALL the tape path every time you play a tape using head cleaning fluid, but be careful near the fragile video heads as they can be damaged.Make sure you wait at least 5 mins before you try playing a tape so the fluid has time to evaporate.Martin

Hello,

I have real trouble with an used N1702. The sound is very good, but the picture quality is changing from fair to appalling - and vice versa. Because the quality is varying,I dont think that the videohead is overused. I tried the cleaning tape ( from an agfadept., still sealed ) half a dozen times, but it isnt working. So I have to clean the video components as described in the manual. Is this really helping ? Or is the danger too high to destroy the videohead ?I remember, that my GRUNDIG store owner had zillions of components, like video heads, cables, etc. All of the GRUNDIG and AGFA base centers have vanished in Germany, but where are the spare parts ? I cant believe that all of these new videoheadswere thrown away ? Some VCR dealers told me, that a company from Liechtensteinbought tons of spare parts, but I couldnt find out which one.

Thanks for your help !

Hello can someone please help me ? I’v got a Beocord 8800-v v2000 vcr, which has just a slight problem. As the tape leaves the head mechanism and comes by the pinch roller assem-bly it puts a crease across the tape about 6 - 9 inches apart . If I place a small amount of pres-sure on top of the pinch roller housing with a drive, this stop and no problems. Can anybody explain how I can adjust this , in layman's terms ? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Kind regards Steve, thanks.

FAO: Allan FreemanI can provide such a service ! I can copy your Video 2000 archive tapes onto VHS in either LP or SP. I live in the Sheffield area - the cost will be £ 2 a tape Plus Postage which is very low indeed but I prefer to keep the cost down to cover just the Cost Price !I can if you prefer transfer your videos onto CD r to play on Computer using DivX / Xvid format this is a cheap alternative to keep cost down with regard to postage and replacement VHS tapes.Eight Hours can be transfered onto CD in very good Quality & the cost is £1 including Postage.Others on this website provide a different service copying onto DVD in very high quality but it depends on what you want & high much you want to pay - if you have a lot of tapes to transfer then maybe my option will best for you.

Now we are fed up of all this junk from Mr. Ken Rodgers!! If he har bothered reading the guidelines for this chat, he will (hopefully) understand that he i violating them. I will not take part in the conflict between him and Mr. Potter, but his messages are not serious at all. Hanging another person out on at chat like this is at least to be acting like a child. And the only thing that he obtains is giving sympathy to Mr. Potter and to be hated himself.

I do hope that the moderator of this board removes all the above mentioned junk.

I am writing this message anonymously only because I am afraid that Ken R. would spam my E-mail too if I had given name and address here. A person as seious as him could well do that.

Let me make it perfectly clear about Mr. Potter.... he was given a chance to mail back my valuable non replaceable 20 year old tape......... I provided him a U.P.S. RETURN NUMBER to RETURN the irreplaceable item........ NO COST!!!!... safely ......... His decision to put it in the mail without postage ...... overseas ........is just like putting it in the garbage!...... This is not a man of integrity he lied to me about returning my tape to end this and he is lying to all of you........ HIS MOTIVE IS MONEY ............... petty but true............ he holds a copy on DVD ( he tells me) and is trying to exploit me for that!............ I will not let Potter get away with poor business practice at the expense of hostage holding...... BE WARE!!!!! of doing business with Potter your non-replicable items may be LOST or held HOSTAGE by a THIEF ...........thank all you who have e-mailed me about this, customers should not be bashed or treated poorly by business owners..... we need to stand up to the ternary of these individuals................... Martin Potter & Ken Rodgers you are both being childish to say the least ! No one is suggesting the return post should be free - But simple putting the video tape in a post box without potstage is at best petulant. A very cheap second class surface post would not have bankrupt you Mr Potter ! Mr Rodgers move on - you have had a bad day with regard to this issue. As with regard to transfering video footage onto VHS or CD r at cost price plus second class post is well in the reach of many Video 2000 fan who may not be so well off as you Mr Potter, at least this way I provide the rare chance of those who at one time in the past owned a video 2000 machine can transfer video footage for less than £ 2 a tape, - not everyone wants to pay through the roof for the odd favorite movies from the 80's etc to be saved

Ken, Thanks for the post on PAL Site , Due to you posting my name and your comments I have had 3 requests to transfer tapes just today,Thankyou. Everyone who contacted me thinks you are going a bit too far and making a fool of yourself "My Lawer is bigger than yours " is the best Ken . They all agree you should have sent payment if you cherish your 20 year old tape so much then you would have had it sent back 1st class mail and it would be there by now.I don't know how you expect me to pay for postage of your tape from the UK to the USA would cost at least 6 UK Pounds if not more Anyway keep on posting your comments it's all working out fine for me . Your DVD looks quite good ,can't be your tape anyway as It's PAL encoded and German ,You use the inferior NTSC system over there and V2000 machines were only available in Erope 20 years ago so who's the German friend you have promised to transfer it for ? I transfer all tapes to DVD not on VCD lower quality on standard CD's like yourself and the equipment is expensive ,I don't use a PC ,The tape is played and composite signal is fed to a filter then fed direct to a Philips DVDR 980 Stand alone recorder and recorded to DVD in real time at a high Quality setting.all this takes time and I sit through the whole tape to monitor it.And if people (Yes you Ken ) send me return postage payment it helps .anyway thanks for your comments.Regards,Martin Potter

Mr Martin Potter I believe it would best serve this chat room if you went elsewhere - you have & continue to upset others with regard to making large amounts of money in transfering video 2000 to other formats. In any case it is morally wrong to over charge supporters of video 2000 & betamax users to transfer video footage to other formats.

I provide the same service as you & it's my opnion that this kind of work should be done as a hobby & the charge for such a service should be at Cost Price ( ie: the cost of a blank tape or bank CD) Plus second post.

You should be ashamed of yourself at the was you have treated others users of this format!

I hereby call on all other users of the Video 2000 & Betmax format to boycott this man (Martin Potter) untill such time he has resolved outstanding issues & takes a less Capitalist approach to riping people off.

Joe

Video 2000 Users .

It was just last night I managed to get my head around this problem & I have now corrected this problem.

I bought a standard scart lead & placed one end into OnDigital box & feed the other end into A/V scart on the Video 2000 machine, I opened up this end & soldered a Video out / Audio out Phono leads - which I feed into my Betamax Video in /Audio in & then used ariel out connection & feed this into my VHS Machine which in connected to my TV .

This now means I can record UK normal transmissions or Digital Transmission via my Video 2000 or Betamax & VHS & it also makes it very easy to transfer programmes recorded on Video 2000 or Betamax to VHS format - all this is looped into my computer & now I can transfer (capture) onto normal CD-R any programming in Divx/Xvid format.

Wow, this has been an interesting project but worthwhile.

I hope this Solution helps others get around a simalar problem.

NOW ALL VIDEO 2000 FANS WE CAN BUY LOADS OF VIDEO 2000 MACHINES FROM EUROPE WITHOUT WORRIES !!

To the Webmaster & Users of Video 2000 System

Can anyone help me !!

I have a philips Video 2000 (2334 Model)!

I have bought this video from Germany because I have many old tapes which play perfect via the scart lead to the TV etc but if I try to use normal coxial lead to the TV & tune TV into video channel I can't get Sound only mixed German audio like on Long Wave Radio. I'v also tried to tune in my video into TV ariel & once again I can't recieve sound only this same garbled German audio while the picture is English - is this because it was made for pal transmission in Germany (Europe) ?

I don't have a proper remote control but I'm using a Philips D2 Mac Cable box Remote which allows me to play, stop, rew, ffd the video.

Can anyone tell me if this model has a Video input on this Machine & how can I record onto A/V in if this is the case ?Is it possilble to use the one scart at the back of the machine for Audio/Video OUT, to my TV while at the same time having a Audio/Video IN, from any other item i.e Ondigital Box or Satellite Reciever?

Does anyone have or know where I can get an instruction booklet for this model ?

If anyone has any idea on how to get around this audio problem please help me with your suggestions.

point me in the right direction with a VR2324 machine that Ihave.Philips VR2324 Can anyone offer advice on my VR2324. When I can get it running this machine produces quite good results but here is the main problem:

The machine is very reluctant to complete the 'play' command correctly. About 95% of the time the machine laces up and then switches off.

There is a secondary fault concerning the modulator which from time to time is either going off frequency or going off altogether. (not sure which).

I don't have the service manual for the machine so don't know where to start. Does anyone have service documantation for the VR2324 or similar? I have two 'working' Grundig 2x4 super machines (plus an unrepairable one) and have the full service documentation. I could offer a copy in return.

(In case its relevant, I live in Cambridge)

This is the email, unedited from KEN RODGERS:-

O.K. I have your attention! It took long enough. You may send back my tape U.P.S. NO CHARGE using our corporate UPS # 44W156 the same number e-mailed to you May 30th this is at NO COST TO YOU. You may send it back to our corporate office at the same address it came from. I already have another vender who will provide tape transfer service in a timely manner. Holding the tape hostage or threatening me will only harm your credibility, returning my tape now is your only option. When I receive the tape our business will be terminated. This is not a non-payment issue it is a performance issue and your performance and attention to a customers needs have not been met i.e. keeping in contact, you have proven to me that we can not do business. If you want to stop the aggression then send back my tape!

Ken states "is a performance issue "how can this be as he has not either sent any payment, nor intends to.So he will not see the performance of the DVD transfer.I feel he sent the tape with no intention of paying and is now wasting my time.I am returning his tape, but retaining the copy on DVD disc until full payment arrives and i see a withdrawl of all said comments

I am Vice Chairman of The Friends of Chertsey Museum. The Museum has a tape in a square box which I played in an exhibtion in the Museum in 1980. I hired a Philips VR 2000 machine to do this and to play the 10 minute sequence from a programme broadcast 'Nationwide'. The Friends need a Philips VR machine to buy or hire so that we can transpose the contents onto VCR, or burn a CD. We want to see again what is now an historical document of the saving of an ancient building. Can anybody help us in this quest? I shall be giving a talk in April 2005 about this recorded Tudor building in the museum and would want to use the tape as the finale. This is an important historic tape which has not been viewed for 24 years so we would be grateful for any help. This is the second time of asking on this chat page, but unfortunately my hardrive went down and I lost my correspondance with someone who could help me when I had confirmed that the tape had not been thrown away in a recent reshuffle at the Museum.VS
