Stein. The problem with your VR2022 (B&O Clone) sounds like a head switching problem. The adjustment for head switching can be found on the DTF plug in boards to the right of the cassette compartment. This will explain your jittery pictures and the white snow that happens when you play a recording on another machine. When you make the adjustments, remember the exact position they were in, just in case you adjust the wrong one. The VR2020 probably has a blown reel motor drive transistor. Check the transistors attached to the heat sink at the rear of the machine for short circuits. Replacements are easily available. Rich.

I have two VCR's and two problems.1. Bang&Olufsen Beocord 8802-V ( VR 2022 clone). When playing pre-recorded tapes the picture is jumping like on a TV where the vertical hold is out of order. Sound is OK. When playing new tapes that is recorded on this VCR, both sound and picture is exellent. When playing tapes recorded on this VCR on another one, there is a wide stripe with snow at the bottom of the picture.2. Philips VR 2020. Good playing of pre-recorded tapes (but it was this machine that gave snow on the bottom with the tape from the B&O machine). Stops and turns off when windind/rewinding after a couple of seconds.Any idea of what's wrong with the two machines? Thanks in advance.

I have a Philips VR2022 V2000 Video Recorder. The machine is in unmarked condition. No scratches or scuffs. All the controls and displays work perfectly. The only problem is that sometimes when tapeing It stops and shuts down after about hour. Other times it will tape the full tape with no problems If anybody can repair the machine, and stop this problem they are welcome to take the machine for FREE. But he or she must be willing to collect it. I live in South Manchester next to Manchester Airport.

I recently picked up a 2X4 Super with an annoying fault - when you try and play a tape, it laces up correctly, but then the reels don't move. It sits there, effectively in pause mode, for a few seconds, and then goes into emergency shutdown.

Loading, unloading, fast-forward and rewind all seem to work normally, it just refuses to turn the reels in play mode. The tape itself isn't jammed - it works on my other 2X4.

Also, can anyone offer advice troubleshooting the DTF system on the 2X4?

Hi I have a small sound studio, running Cubase5, Soundforge5 on PC, with all the basic equipment needed to record, master etc.I am totally new to the Beta scene and would like to know what would be the most cost effective way for me to have a Beta system up and running. Would it mean syncronising my current set up to a Beta machine, with a TV screen? I have no idea! I would like to be able to do voice-overs/music to existing beta material, master it and have it ready for the client in Beta format.Any info would be much appreciated.ThanksCraig

I have several Grundig V2000 VCRs and a quantity of brand-new (well, 17 year old!) 2 hour cassette tapes of the type originally sold with new VCRs. If someone out there wants to make me an offer for the tapes (approx 20) I would be most interested.Incidentally, before powering-up an old Grundig V2000 machine, please be sure to replace the Power Supply capacitors, C420 & C423, with RS part number 124-5579 and C424 with RS part number 124-5591. These are 275V wkg items, as opposed to the original 250V wkg items which have a tendency to catch fire! The battery on the Microprocessor Card will probably need to be replaced. This can be bought from Farnell, part number 863-968. Belt Kits and Pinch Rollers are available from Grandata, part numbers BK94 and PR162 respectively.

Hi Keith, I own 2 fully functional Philips VR2023 's and recently got a VR 2334 VCR (wow what a marvelous machine!!!)I saw in the archived messages that you have the schematics for the 2120 and the 2220, my gut feeling is that these will be very useful for me.the 2334 is in fact, just these two units fitted together in one unit ;-)there is even room in the enclosure that is used for the battery pack in the 2220!! and the units are physically separated in the 2334.If you still have the schematics, I'll be interested in them.Ofcourse, the original schematics/service documentation of the 2334 would be even better

Thanks for that, Keith.

Another PALsiter helped with the pinouts for the N1500, and so I did a bit of poking around with the DIN socket last night - interestingly, it seems that it's actually non-standard. I was expecting pin 2 to be video, pin 3 ground, and pin 4 audio; in fact while pin 3 is indeed ground, pin 4 is video and pin 6 is audio (there was no audio on pin 2).

To Gareth

The 6-pin AV DIN socket on the Grundig 2x4 is fairly standard. I bought a scart kit from Argos a few years ago (the type with just about every connector you could possibly want).. in that kit the main lead was a 6pin to 6pin DIN which when fitted with one of the Scart adaptors will provide AV out from the 2x4 to a VHS or TV with a Scart input. The same socket is also fitted to the very old Philips N1500 recorders.

Not sure if you'll be able to record on the 2x4 the same way as one of the pins provides a switching signal to determine which way the signal is going down the cable (record or playback). If I can find the exact pin details I'll let you know.

Keith.

Hi Gareth.

No need to make any mechanical tracking adjustments. The tape is probably deteriorating and clogging the head. All V2000 machines exhibit that lined effect that hooks from top to bottom when the heads get clogged. Either that or the recordings are of poor quality. Rich.

I'm trying to play back some V2000 tapes I picked up at an old technology fair on my Grundig 2X4. The machine plays some sections of the tapes perfectly, but on other sections I get audio, but no proper picture - just thick white flickering vertical lines on a black background that hook near the top of the screen. On yet other sections of the tapes, I get those lines superimposed over the correct picture.

Does this sound like irreversible tape damage, or do you think I'd be able to rescue the pictures with a bit of tweaking? Is there any way to manually adjust the tracking on V2000 machines?

All opinions gratefully received! I can supply screen captures of the white lines if necessary.

Try making your own high spec V2000 cassettes by winding modern, high quality VHS tape into the V2000 housing. It's a bit complicated to describe in detail here, but anyone with nimble fingers and an electric drill should be able to do it. Use a Maplin splicer to join up to the silver leader section at each end. The results are excellent: better picture quality, better (more stable) trick performance and smoother rewind. Thanks to the inherently poor quality of VHS (the system), tape manufacturers have consistently improved the quality of tape to improve VHS over the past twenty years or so. The result; better quality for V2000 and Beta too if you're prepared to "wind your own."

Just one question, does anyone know which is the absolute best tape (actual tape type, not just manufacturer) in terms of picture quality ie resolution? Maybe Which magazine has done a review of tapes recently perhaps? I have had good results with TDK EHG and Maxell HGX, but if there is anything better out there I'd be interested to know.

I have a Philips 2020 'player' that doesn't anymore! At least, it did up until yesterday, when I got it down from the attic to play some old tapes for the first time in about 3 years.

I read the very interesting surgery notes about re-activating, so I'll try the leaving it on for an hour routine etc...

The actual problem is that it comes to life fine, then, when I tried each of my tapes, inserted them and pressed play, it makes a 'ping' and ejects the said tapes, instead of playing them.

Is it knackered please? Or, can a Luddite like me save it??

Hi Ray,

The going rate for an old 'as is' V2000 machine is between zero and £30. This is for machines that probably do not work properly - if at all. The sort of thing that started playing up 15 years ago, and has sat underneath the bed ever since. Of course the passage of time does not fix them - they get worse! Beware of the famous phrase, "It did work...."

There are exceptions of course; good, well maintained machines bought from enthusiast/engineers, second generation machines (working or not) and so on. For these, you have to weigh up how badly you want the machine and judge accordingly. If someone has spent many hours restoring a machine then obviously their time, effort and parts have to be paid for.

You do get people who payed £400 for them new and seem to think that an old non-working, un-maintained machine is worth £100 now. Forget them, there are lots of others about.

What is your interest? - hobbyist or do you just have old V2000 tapes to play, are you able to work on machines?

Is there a typical going rate for a working Video 2000 format VCR? Bearing in mind buying one is huge risk, as you are getting around a 20 year old machine that could conk out as soon as you've got it home. I would have thought paying any more than £20 to £30 tops would be silly, unless you're desperate to own one again? I wouldn't be surprised to hear they go for a lot more than that though!!

I used to replace faulty tapes of VCCs. But there are two questionsI couldn't answer right now.First, what kind of tape are the best for V2000? I'd like to havegood quality and hopefully a "new" 480min VCC with the correct timedisplay (on my 2x4 super). So the tape-thickness would be important. The VHS-tapes I tried seem to be to thick. Second, the tape end recognition is done by a "silver-line" onthe back of the tape. I wonder if there is a possibility to drawthis line myself. Till now, I used a tape-repair-kit to merge thenew tape with the ends of the old tape. But this way I have lessquality at the beginning/end and I wonder if the headdrum likesthe splice.Simon

Hello,Can anyone provide me with the circuit diagram fo a Grundig 2x4 Super power supply please.I'm endeavouring to get to the bottom of the very common power supply fault that seems to bug nearly all of these machines. If I find an answer, it will be made common knowledge on this chat forum!Cheers, Ian.

I have a broken Philips 2020 machine and about 10 Video 2000 tapes dating back to the early Eighties. The tapes are full of old BBC/ITV programmes/commercials of the time, old TOTP's etc etc...

I would like to play these tapes again or at the very least copy them to VHS.

Ideally though I'd like to buy a working Video 2000 machine. I'll pay a good and fair price and will collect within a 50 mile radius of London.

Many thanks

I have two VCR format machines. One standard, broken machine. One long play, good working machine. And a few (big, square) tapes.Any offer considered - these must be historic. They're certainly heavy. Email me.

Keith...According to my Grundig 2x4 Super Instructions ManualThe reason why the Tape light flashes is because there is a Tape jam check if the fault is either on the lacing ring or the tape.

Hope this helps Paul

I've just got hold of a Grundig 2x8 from the Netherlands, which works perfectly since changing a small pinch roller. Does anyone know how straightforward it is to change the IF from the 5.5 MHz used in the Netherlands to the 6Mhz standard used here, so I can use it to record off air here?

I have a multi standard TV, so have no need to change the RF!Any guidance gratefully received!!

Help Wanted. I have a Philips VR2022 Video 2000 unit with an annoying fault. On playback the tape suddenly stops and the unit completely shuts down - just as if it had been switched off by the front panel switch. The fault is intermittent and seems to have pattern. Some times it will play for 10 minutes, other times it occurs after a few seconds.

Any ideas ???

Hi Keith: If the magnet is ok you need to determine if the sensor or microcontroller chip has failed. The easiest way is with a scope. Unfortunately, not being familiar with the grundig I can't tell you where the test point is. These sensors do fail. I've changed quite a few over the years mainly on VHS equipment. If you need a service manual there is a company called Mauritron Technical Services who will doubtless have a photocopy at reasonable cost. Their web address is http://www.mauritron.co.uk Hope this is of help. Richard.

Richard : I've had another look at my Grundig 2x4, and I think it's sensor is the hall-effect type. As the sensor looks like a small black transistor with 3-legs - there are two numbers on it TL1701 / T18240. There also appears to be a ring magnet around the take-up spool... what I think has happened is it was original glued down on the spool itself and has become loose and is being attracted to the metal deck - so it doesn't rotate when the reel rotates. I think I'm going to have to strip the mechanism down and see if there are any traces of glue still remaining to confirm this theory. Thanks.

Hi Keith: Just to add to my last message I remember having a VHS vcr (a Sharp) in for repair with the same symptom and it turned out not to be a faulty sensor, but the reel table in so far as the reflective surface has deteriorated. The VCR had apparently not been used for months and had not been stored in ideal conditions, I think damp had got to it. Could this be what's causing your problem? Richard.

Hi Keith:I'm not too sure about the Grundig V2000 machines but all the later Philips machines used a magnet on the teel table that triggered a hall effect ic. Logically the sensor would be mounted on the take up reel but many vcr's have a sensor on both to account for reverse motion, ie: picture search. If you have access to an oscilloscope you can scope the relavant testpoint in the vcr and see if an adequate waveform is produced. Sorry I can't be of any further help on this one, though the actual fault is probably very easy to cure. Richard.

Richard: I suspected the reel sensor but I'm a little confused on how it's supposed to work ! There only appears to be a single sensor and that's on the take-up spool (connected by a three wire ribbon cable). The sensor looks like a small black cylinder just at the front end of the reel. It looks like it should be a optical sensor but there's no reflective material or any gaps on the reel for this to work. If it's an electro-magnetic type - would the small magnet be inside the reel itself, again there's nothing apparently on the reel itself. Thanks, Keith.

Two things I would like a little help with if there is anyone out there that can assist. First, I have a Grundig 2x4 Super that loads the tape around the head but then immediately stops ans winds it back into the cassette and leaves the LED above the TAPE switch flashing. Also, I have noticed that the head capstan drives from the moment the tape is inserted until the unit times out. I assume that this may be a sensor problem, any ideas on where I should start looking.

Second, when trying to play tapes from a Philips 2022 in the Grundig, the picture keeps breaking up and there is sound only very occasionally. The Philips and the Grundig both have Dynamic Tracking with the signals being recorded on the tape. Is perhaps the Philips incompatible with the Grundig or should this work. ??

Any help appreciated.

Keith:I'm not sure absolutely about your model, but check the reel motion sensors they may be contaminated or faulty. If the machine can't detect any reel motion it is assuming there is no tape drive and triggers the stop command. The reason you can see a still picture is because no reel motion occurs in pause or still mode to there is no fault to detect. They are located underneath the reel tables.Richard.

Does anyone know what might be wrong with my Grundig 2x4 1600. It runs for only about 2 secs (FF,REW,PLAY,REC) and then shuts downs with the pause light flashing. However if I press pause just after playback starts it will stay on still frame but and soon as I start it up playing again it shuts down. Also the counter doesn't move much only by one digit when I first start the machine up Any ideas ? Thanks, Keith.
