HELP. My SLHF100 has developed a strange fault. It works perfectly most of the time but has recently got worse. When I try to rewind fast forward play or record the tape stops after a couple of seconds. I have noticed that just before the tape stops a small light ignites with the word "sound" printed next to it. This light stays dormant when the machine works fine. The problem seems to come and go and is present with a wide range of tapes. Any ideas?. Thanks in advance.

Are parts for the Sanyo Betacord VTC-5000 still available in the UK? I need a belt kit, but if heads are to be had (and not too expensive) I wouldn't mind replacing them.

Also, does anyone have a working Beta deck (any model) to sell in the south-east England area?

Sony SL-10 Parts Deck Available: I used this deck to get a replacement antenna switch for another VCR. If anyone needs any parts from it, they'll only cost you shipping and handling.

Parts Not Available: Tape loading mechanism (missing), fast forward and rewind drive unit (incomplete), antenna switch, and remote control.

What Is Available: Front panel (display appears to work), top and bottom covers (some scratches, but not too bad), power supply (powered the display), several circuit boards, miscellaneous bits and pieces, and possibly the heads and motor drive.

Since I can't fully check out the deck's operation, I can't guarantee any parts will work for you.

I have been in contact with Hama who supply various video productsand they have a small number of tape splicing kits left. These special kits include the metalic leader tape used in Betamax tapes.Hama has a website at http://www.hama.co.uk/

The item is still available as a kit but we will no longer be able tosupply spare tapes, my impression is that supply will dry up totallywithin a few weeks/months. Thank you for your interest in our products.

I am in the process of getting a SONY SLO-1800 SuperBETA HiFi Industrial duplicator, and will begin offering the videos we carry in BETA format.

Absolute BETA is out at this time, but does anyone know, or have one that they wish to part with, a multistandard NTSC/PAL/SECAM SuperBETA HiFi VCR?

I am also looking for some 1984-1987 BETA Videos of some Adult Titles that were produced, and would be willing to buy/trade for titles I don't have.

Those who can help can email me, and I can provide them with the list of videos I need. Thanks in advance.

Nothing racy. Just family and kid stuff. If interested I would like to sell you the whole lot for the price of postage and $1 per tape plus $10 for the machine. Have a few not used Beta tapes, too. I have a Sony Betamax, SL5000 and I've retired now and after moving several times and getting married again, I really wanted to use my Betamax. I had all the rubber belts replaced and now the repairman in Cammeron, Wisconsin says I need a 'tape drive motor'. It takes the tape but as soon as the motor warms up it quits. I bought all the belts, Operation Manual and Service Manual from Sony, in St. Louis Park, Minnesota. They said the 'tape drive motor' was no longer available. I can't fix it myself so I have to sell it or give it away. I hate to throw it away because it was such a great machine. It looks new. Also, I have aroung 15 or 20 tapes, some recorded and some blank. Please won't someone tell me how to dispose of it? I would appreciate selling it if there is a market for it. I live in the Northwoods of Wisconsin. Thanks for advice.....Betsy

Hello all, I have a few questions about my (US) HF-750. When I go to set up the timer my on screen display shows "military time" and the faceplate part shows "12 hour" time. Is this normal? Can I change the on screen display to display "12 hour time"? It's almost an annoyance but will deal with it. Also, for those of you with the HF-750 and the original remote (all I have is a, I assume vhs, RMT-V373A), when you push the button for "on screen display" do you get the timer setting screen or just the counter screen? By pushing the index buttons I do get that stuff on screen, but that is still future reference; in other words I still haven't learned "indexing". The one thing I miss about the old Sanyo Betas, "memory". That's it for now. Carry on. Pepse.

I'm new to this whole beta thing, so I have a few questions... First, I picked up an old video camera recently. It's a Sony HVC-1000, and it has a cable to hook it to a seperate recorder. The guy who i go it from said that it hooks into a Sony SuperBeta recorder. He also said that it wouldn't be too hard to make or buy an adapter to hook it into a regular VHS recorder. Does anyone know anything about this specific camera, where i can find service manuals, ect, and if its possible to hook it to VHS? I've searched the net and haven't found any info about the camera...

I have got a question about my Sony C9 Deck (german version) I finally managed to fix yesterday. Thanks in advance!

I'm trying to locate some movies on Betamax that were made between 1984 and 1987. I know people are buying pre-recorded tapes to re-record on, but I am particularly interested in some Adult Videos that were made.

If anyone has any prerecorded Adult BETA Videos, that they are interested in selling, contact me for a list of what I want, or just email me a list of what you have. As long as BETA PAL/SECAM machines kept the same tape speed, I have a digital converter to convert tapes. VHS machines have different tape speeds on PAL/SECAM machines, ie a T-60 in SP NTSC is 60 minutes, whereas in PAL/SECAM SP it is approx. 90 minutes.

Thanks in advance.

Used SL-HF750 or SL-HF900, which is the wiser choice from a parts availability and durability standpoint? Given equal usage, is one more likely to need replacement heads or other parts? If durability equal, what is the main difference (not counting the BI speed capability) in performance? thanks, Davids

Being an owner of both Sony Sl-HF 900s and SL-HF 750s I can say that the 900 is (in my opinion a better machine). The fact that it can not record in Beta 1 can be fixed for a reasonable cost. Service wise have had some problems with both and wound up with one 900 in the shop that cant be fixed it is worn out and the parts needed Sony does not make. Note that these same parts are in the 750 so if I wore one of those out it'ld face the same proble. Advantages that the 900 has are: More timer settings, the ability to do audio video inserts (something the PAL 950 has) and a timer that is quicker to set. The tape drawer loading system of the 750 is also not the best idea in the world, I have one that the tape will pop up and then go back down unless you grab it right away. This is more stuff that has gotten worn out. Alos one has to be VERY careful about moving the 750s and 950s since the drawer can move around if you fail to put in the retainer screws.

Anyone know of a cure for a fault on a SONY HF-100 where the tape laces up ok but it will only rewind or fast forward for a few seconds before going back into stop. And when Play or Record is selected the machine runs fast and throws tape out then too goes back to stop mode (I think the capstan is running too fast and the take-up isn't matching it's speed so the tape just spills out everywhere)

Any help appreciated - or if anyone know or any good repair shops in the Bristol area that can help.

Thanks,Keith.

Hi everyone. I picked up a Sanyo HI-Fi 7200 machine. Ive replace all rubber. It eats tapes intermittantly because the right reel take up is intermittant, load mechinism is sluggish, and image cannot be cleared up. Im thinking bad components in power supply, probably dried out caps, any suggestions? I mean, besides using this horribly engineered machine for an anchor? :-)

Hello all! I have Three things for you tonight. First off, to Jake: Yes, $100 for an SL-HF750 is a good price, in fact, I've never heard of one that low before! Second, no John, PAL Beta does not record or play at the same speed as NTSC. Last, I have a question. Soon, I will probably be getting an Aiwa SV-50M hi-fi processor. Are there any quirks this processor has? Is it rare? Is it worth anything? Thank you.

Hello, I just recieved a Sanyo model 7200 from an eBay auction, and it is chewing tape at an alarming rate. I also have one of Sanyo's older "Betacord" models (sorry, I cannot confirm the mdoel number for that) that does the same thing. I seem to recall something about Sanyos having a tape-chewing bug throughout their line of Betas... is there any truth to that? Based on my experiences, I certainly think so!<br>

In either case, bug or not, is there anything I can do to fix this problem? The symptoms I've noticed: It chews any tape that is rewound in that machine, regardless of whether or not it was going through the playback heads while being rewound. Every five or so seconds of playback, I hear a slight "click... click... click" coming from the machine. My friend who's a VCR expert says that means the gears are slipping a tooth... could that be a reason?

All that said, I *do* have to say that the 7200 is an excellent machine for not being Sony - it's got all the bells and whistles you'd expect from a Beta Hi-Fi, including user-adjustable recording volume and 80db stereo output. And aside from the tape-chewing, it's the best VCR I currently have in the house, my other (VHS) models being a superb Sony, a mediocre Sears/LXI, and a crappy Magnavox.

If anyone can help with this problem, or point me to a place in the Columbus (Ohio) area where I can take this unit in for professional service, please e-mail me at the given address - I doubt I'll be able to find my way back here now.

Greetings All,

I have a Sony SL-HF300 Betamax that I recently acquired but there's a major problem with it. It plays a tape, but the picture is mainly in black & white w/ colorshifting, greenish skin tones and the like. Sound in Hifi mode is also distorted. It kinda looks & sounds like the machine is varying in speed (faster & slower & faster & so on) but I can't see any variance in the tape or reel speed. Switching it in mono mode reveals that the linear audio is playing properly.

I've already tried cleaning the video heads with both a tape and the "pro" method using chamois swabs & solution. But nothing has cured the problem.

Basicly the machine worked fine for short while then started this picture/sound problem about ½ way thru a tape I was playing and has continued with every tape since (including some I had recorded when the machine was working!). I'm just not sure what to do @ this point. Any ideas, please email me.

Thanx, Madness

I have several m40 decks ( http://www.users.bigpond.com/jsparkin ) which I believe to be the PAL equivalent of the 7200, as the m50 is the 7215? anyway, I have seen a few of these decks chew tapes, ONLY when there is a tape path problem though, meaning, if a tape get snagged somewhere on something, instead of the decks programming going "oh no eject tape" the decks seem to decide to wind tape....uh oh....I could be completely wrong but I have seen this chew bug cured on a few m20 and m40 decks by adjusting the tape path guides...

I hope this is of some help

To Charles Joly : instead of Pro-X Beta tapes you can use Betacam tapes ( no Betacam SP ), the quality of the material is even better. I suppose the "old" Betacam tapes are not too expensive today, because they're not using the standard any more.

My Sanyo 7200 has yet to eat its first tape.

I have picked up a brace of defective SL-HF900s for what may be described as a nominal charge. Maybe I'll swap out parts between them until I end up with one good one.

I'm looking for a manual for a SL HF1000. If anyone has one, will pay reasonable amount for a copy. Also, I need a remote control. Does anyone have an RMT 148 or a RMT V373A for sale, or any other that would work with this machine. Thanks.

I've got a SONY SL-HF300 with a head motor problem. It plays fine for 10-15 minutes and then seizes up. I'd like to swap parts with an old SL-10 I have, but don't know if the parts are interchangeable. Can anyone with a service manual, for one or both of these units, please tell me the SONY part number for the head motors. Thanks.

I have an SL-HF400 that is crinkling up all my tapes. It doesn't chew them up, but I think it has something to do with the pinch rollers that the tape is going through right before it enters the inside of the cassette. I turned one of the screws that has a round metal cylinder and a spring underneath it. It helped a little, but it is still messing up my tapes right by the pinch rollers, so I haven't fiddled with it anymore. Is there some easy adjustment to fix this? If not, how much should I spend to fix this problem and any suggestions of who I should take it to? Also, I have an SL-HFR30 betamax that looks like it has an identical player unit/motor assembly. Would I be able to switch this unit from the SL-HFR30 to the SL-HF400, or would it not work? All responses are appreciated.

I have a historical question, hopefully someone can help: I heard that one reason for the demise of Beta was actually caused by Sony.

One of the early Sony Beta machines had a design flaw that cause all of a particular model to break down when rewinding a tape.

Thie flaw happened at a critical time and hurt the sales of Beta, just as VHS was starting to take off.

Is this true? If so, what was the model and year? Was it the SL-8600, made in 1978?

If anyone can send me the answer (and additional detail on the problem, if one existed) it would be appreciated!! Thanks!

Re the C40 not erasing sound properly. This is due to a faulty bias oscillator. If you are lucky this could be down to a bad connection on the full track erase. Worth a check. The erase head is the first head the tape comes into contact with before the drum itself.

I have a US Sony Betamax, Model SL5000 and it needs a motor repair. I also have the repair manual, factory service manual, parts list, set-up manual and owner's manual and l5 to 20 Beta tapes, some recorded and some blank. The machine takes the tape but as soon as the motor warms up, it quits. I don't know how to repair it and I can't find anyone who can. I had all the belts replaced. I loved the machine but now I still can't use it, so I think I should sell the whole thing. Also, it' heavy, so thats a problem with selling it. ( 30 pounds) Anybody willing to take on this problem? Let me know........thanks

Regarding PAL SL-HF1K machines:They were ordered in late 1990 from Sony Broadcast and Professional inBadhoevedorp, the Netherlands for 3800,- Hlf a piece. They where nevermarketed for consumer use, as a matter of fact only around a 1000 pure PALmachine's like these two where build. Their grey coloured but look and function the same as the NTSC. Sony Netherlands,Belguim, Denmark and Australia where they only companies which ever sold these machines, they where put out of listing in favour of Professional Hi-8 We bought these machines because wegot an first order from a now big client of us was using SuperBeta forroadshows, soon after they upgraded to Panasonic M-II. The recorders wherenever used since. Items are located in a big bassement of a dutch local TVstation / Facilities company near Amsterdam.

Hi folks

I have an old video cassete AKAI brand model VK -30 recorded using AKAI VCR and Vídeo Camera in the late 70's or early 80's. I have a strong necessity of playback that tape but I have no idea which system it works or which VCR (other than the never-seen AKAI) can bring-it-to-life again (I was a child when the tape was recorded...) I'm sure it is not a VHS. Is it a Beta(?) or Betamax? What is it? If you have any information, encyclopaedia knowledge or idea that can help me with this video-archeology, I would appreciate that.

Thanks

Ismael

I am just starting my hobby with beta-vcr:s and I have a few questions to ask.1.Can I use a beta-vcr like a normal vcr with my TV? 2.Are beta-vcr:s from a TV-station different in any way of "normal" ones? 3.Do I need some special cables or something?

Poor Martin Imber ;)

Strange, I have just had an M40 overhauled, ALL parts were available, loading carriage, heads, reel motor, belts, some tension thingy, if you let the moths out of the wallet at a decent authorised repair center, Im sure your wee baby will spool tapes again :)

Many people seem to think because its beta, it shouldnt cost them nything, but really its the other way around, you get what you pay for, and with beta, your paying for quality.

Martin, I offered you spools for your m40 months ago, I have a pair of junked m40 's out in my garage, but you said you could get them for nothing there and wait for some to come along, gee potage adds up old chap, as I didnt want anything for them ;)

I had some parts on order, I thought it would be rude to cancel them!

Where did you get the reel motor from? I am in UK.

Still interested in the spools, as the contacts said none were available.

Thanks for the previous offer.

So far I have fitted new belts, idlers, etc.

The local repair place won't do estimates, or even say if they can get the bits.

When I had the heads done they even wanted a huge deposit, and we all know that full working order Beta video recorders are worth quite a bit compared to some other junk.
