I tried to post this yesterday, but it is not showing up on board.

I have a Sanyo SuperBeta, model 7250 - not working - if anyone wants it. Otherwise it will find its way into a landfill. Same with a MAC-Plus -- in good shape, works fine, though a tad slow with no hard drive. Maybe it would look nice in a museum exhibit.

Hi - Just a note - I have a couple of The PAL SLHF1700 Top Loading Industrial decks - They are only Standard Beta Hifi decks NOT superbeta. I think the only superbeta for the PAL market is the SLHF950.

Hey Watchdog, you never cease to amaze me.

If it rocks your boat, or makes you feel empowered to wear some type of netcop ID tag on your shoulder, all power to you. I still think its quite impulsive behaviour, perphaps you have some sort of " social " shortfall that you are trying to be some sort of maniac cop.

Anyhow, I am not going to waste my time with you. If it rocks your boat, go ahead be happy.

As for me. I wil continue being on this board asking question, and keep on trying to get my betamax working.

I will politely decline to comment on the whole "Watchdog" thing... anyway, All I want to think I'm doing is pointing out undersireables. I don't take any action against them, it's not my place, but I do want to warn people about shill bidders and to be warned about them.

At any rate, have you got any one 400 together in one piece? What are its current problems?

Sorry for posting an ebay problem seller. I guess none of you use ebay so it doent matter to you ? as for Kris, sorry to take up your time. Your main concern is posting about 2 pieces of crap SL-HF400 equalling one non functioning Frankenbeta. But at least the original Frankenstein functioned. You couldn't care less about bidder rip-off***** best wishes to the rest and let the shill bidding begin with Kris blessing. sorry for caring

Tom, watchdog, or whaever moves your boat.

Caring and trying to be helpful is one thing. Being compulsive, psychotic, is an illness and you should seek remedy.

The only reason why I even mentioned was because you entered my name in your " this week police watch " Dont put my name in your police watch newspost and I wont bother to type yours.

Sl-HF400 Piece of crap? Well, this board is meant for betalovers. I love my sl-hf400 and yeah I will try to make them work and at least learn something about it. As you can see I am not compulsive, or ill about the thing not working.

I am not sure how old are you, but guessing somewhere between 16-21 or 44-70. You seem to have a lot of time to play. Do you even work? Or have anything else better to do than listing to that little voice in your head " Everyone is coming to get me " type of deal?

Go get yourself check out. and leave me out of it.

Well... I suppose someone had to have spotted it. If it was you I don't need to hear about it. It happened. If it was you, that's fine, if it wasn't, that's fine too, but it should be a totally anonymous tipoff. Do you understand? I hope so. It's good that these people get turned in, but I don't think knowing who did it will help us like knowing about a shill bidder will. I hope I make sense.

the SL-HF1000 debate arises again in PAL land......

Sony Australia have no record of it ever exsisting...neither do sony broadcast...

but there is parts listed for a SL-S1000, which, aparently, was a similar unit to the SL-S2000. It was a "multisystem" being PAL and SECAM.

the last Betahifi's to be brought into Australia were SL-HF99ES's in early 2002. Before that the SL-HF77ES untill 1998.

You know, just to annoy the anti-watchdogs I think I will become one myself. I also have a question, why does the HiFi on my 300s sometimes go staticky, like, it sounds like Beta Mono in HiFi but the HiFi lite stays on. Good for you Jesse. I feel like a lone voice on this chatpage. I feel I have done nothing wrong in trying to protect the honesty of Betamax auctions on e-Bay. The viscious attacks on me really hurt and made me doubt whether I was doing good. Even Sean, who seems like a nice person, was at best, lukewarm to cleaning up the sewer auctions. I still feel that SHILL BIDDING is just about the worst activity that I have seen and those who try to excuse it really show the type of people they are. I apologize for my ranting, but I am very serious about this. BTW, I am looking to purchase an SL-S600 if anyone can direct me to one that is operational. thanks, Tom

I'm behind you, Tom, as long as you keep conducting yourself as you have been. It's not neccessary for someone to be know for turning in shill bidders, just as long as they're turned in. What's neccessary is for us to know about them. Keep at it. Just don't let it become your only dimension.

I may be a little dense, but for example, if I find a shill bidder, turn him into e-Bay and then alert this page to what I did then I am doing wrong? I shouldnt say it was me who ratted him out? Humm... I don't think I need your expertise about low pass filters. Or any kind of electronic circuits for that matter.

If I were you, I would care about what I append to my beta power supply so it keeps running well.

By the way, it happens that Sony paid engineers to design this power supply and these guys took notice of the thermal resistance of the parts in this power supply and chose an appropriate heat sink that doesn't need the help of a fan to keep it cool enough. I tend to think they have done their job well, because none of the betas I own have ever had any problem due to power supply overheating.

Tom: It's good that those people get shut down, they should be. It helps us plenty to know about their bad practices, but it doesn't help anyone to post about doing it IF you did it. If you did do it, you should be proud of it for yourself, but posting it here will probably only attract negative attention. I only say so because SO many people read this and there seem to be a crop of @$$holes waiting in the wings to only post if something pisses them off. Remember Trollomatic, Meter, UHF, That Annoyed Canadian Ebayer and all those other empty-skulled punks who simply enjoyed criticising us? The big reason I think the tipoffs should be annonymous, and whoever's doing it shouldn't post it; is because of people like that.

Anyway just to alert you people that a new identity theft scam is making the rounds. People get a notice that their eBay account has been suspended and are directed to a link that requests that they fill out every piece of personal info needed for a scammer to make all sorts of mischief.

Advice to those who get that sort of e-mail is to never click on the given hyperlink within the e-mail (anyone can dummy up an official-looking sitepage) but to contact and/or go to the site in question directly. no responsible site will e-mail you with a request for personal information - especially with a threat of 'account suspension'.

homer: i have personally had to replace the voltage regulator on the heat sink of my slhf750 power supply and am familiar with several other similar instances. your blind trust in the competency of sony engineers is misplaced. however,i agree with your assertion that altering the circuitry ain't the best idea in the world. a 120 volt fan might safely help to remove potentially damaging heat in a crowded stack. enhanced ventilation can only extend the lifespan of hard to replace equipment.

The old RCA CED players with a character generator chip in them used to develop overheating issues and cause the screen to fog up, so to speak. How's that for poor design. Solutions include operating the unit without the case, installng a peltier junction, opertaing the player in a refrigerator (!), and, most sensibly, installing a small CPU fan... http://www.cedmagic.com/ has details of how to do it, which may translate over to Betamax. Theorhetically you could just use a 12V adapter to drive a bunch of fans on each piece of equipment that could stand for one... JVC made my HR-S5500U so that it gets VERY hot in operations...

I you dont need it,dont ask questions.

I'm not really expert, if I do so i can explain much more details up to Formula.

I share my experience to others.

If sony Engineers really care about the that parts, how come it can be overheated after a long runs and why many spare parts are made.Due to a long time of use Beta tens to degraded, this affect internal circuitry resistance so some part heats up some may be brown outs.In my country Temperature are high. So I keeps my Beta cool at summer.

CPU fan consumed very little amount of power and less when it comes to full speed. This could'nt drain up power supply. If you're worried about your PW supply you may add Switching PS/Adapter module inside your Beta to an empty space. Be happy.

AC fan build noises and strong magnetic field, but makes good air circulations.DC fan/CPU fan comsumes little power and of coursse blows smoothly.Overclock FAN highest noise, may dry your hair in seconds.Maybe sticking a heat sensor at the heatsink with a Temperature Controller makes the FAN runs on demand.

The choice is yours.

I'm not putting blind trust in Sony's engineers. I just said they might have chosen the right way to cool down their power supplies. I keep in mind that these are consumer devices dedicated to break at some point in time. But we can admit that power supply problems are not any betas Achille's heel.

How long have you had your beta powered up before the STK chip broke ??? Then, are you sure it broke due to overheating ??

Of course this power supply was built for a specific application and might overheat if you connect other devices. Also, as some people think a diode is a good device to cut off ripple (and obviously don't know what they are talking about) they might as well connect this diode incorrectly and short circuit the thing completely.

Bobby

[email protected]

Gee you never understands......I just changed the 'MOSFET'....and there's my very alive Beta...up to weeks/months.I did checking voltages etc and i'm not guessing.

Of course parts maybe broke by many reasons..but overheat is the most common thing....Some part of circuitry dont have SCR protections, overvoltages just strike the component helplessly.Old IC dont have static protections.Cables are jumpered everywhere. They dont have Multi layered PCB at that time. These are all the weaknesses of Beta design. Sony engineer is just a human being, they can make mistake.

And i'm sorry to say that "Japanese steal 'Know how' from American" at the very previous time.

I'm not suggesting modifications to some Rookie,It would be so naif to put diode at the opposite pole .

Bobby

To a low pass filter they may design whatever they like and how complicated can be.I use the diode as simple filter and it really cuts ripple off,but if you scope it it still exists.Again you may design the filter by any means. If you want the best you can have DC to DC converter as your filter.

Yes ,that right..As I say before at some points they have lot of weakness.Component at 15 years ago have many imperfections at the other point they have much durations. My knowledge is based on practises not on theorical (of course we need theory). At some cases theory may break in the field.

The URL you've posted dont have detailed explanations like Diode for regulators ,they dont say what kind of diode. They know only in general.By spesific design diodes can increase voltages.

The best knowledge is from practises not from others saying.

Addition about Beta Power Supply Heatsink::

Every Beta have Power Supply. It's located at the Left back corner of the deck. After a long run the machine usually gets warm. It's not really warm It's very HOT.Most of us say warm because we only thouches the Casing. When you open the upper cover, look at the Aluminum Platter with a jagged edge located at the back leftmost corner. If you dare to touch the aluminum, feel the Heat "its like IRON".That's why some of Betamie put a Fan to chill out those IRON, and expect the component to extend it's Duration.

Lower dissipation extend the life of a component.

Well. I've had my HF750 for about 4 years and about 2 years ago the STK power supply died; it is always kept in a position where it is always able to keep itself cool. That includes using empty thread spools to keep it about 2 1/2 inches above the surface under it. But then I've always made sure any of my components are properly ventilated.

Later. Pepse.

First they can "filter", then they can increase voltage (i.e. generate a current by themselves). Where do you get these magic diodes I've never heard about ??

I'd explained the first diode.....I forget the Schematic...maybe putting the diode in series.....i'll cacth that later

The voltage may increase....but the current should drop........I must find the book in the warehouse if you want the exact answer. So are you studying electronics...????

Yes I did study electronics.

If it was a zener diode then we could say it "generates" a determined voltage if enough voltage is applied across its leads. Perhaps that's what you meant.

A good example of use for these diodes is found in my SL-2710 power block. There are zener diodes connected in parallel with the different outputs, and their zener voltage is just a little higher than the power supply output. So if, because of a malfunction, the output voltage goes too high, the zener will start conducting and therefore short the power supply. This will break the output transistors for sure but at least the overvoltage will not reach the rest of a VCR. Simple, but efficient protection.

Ya, that's Zener Job,sometime combined with SCR to close the Gate if the Drain reach its value. This circuitry are everyhwere.

This would effectively further enhance the protection as the SCR will keep conducting even if the voltage goes back to a safe value. This particular configuration is called "crowbar" overvoltage protection.

By the way, I found this very interesting, yet simple page about electronics concepts...

Many type of SCR nowadays...some lock up completely some have leakage.

You've made counterwise, SCR will lock the gate even the reference goes back to normal unless you reverse the Drain.

A SCR behaves more or less like a transistor as it turns ON once you apply a sufficient gate current. The difference with a transistor is that it latches itself on and will stay this way even if you cut the gate current.

I guess everybody is yummy gummy........Why didnt they put this SCR instead of Fuses in Beta, are they dumb or they design in purpose. So we buy their parts.

Maybe the reason is same as Why dont they make Solid State Hardisk instead of now we are using.Maybe Hardisk Engineer as dumb as Sony Engineer((sorry if you Read This Post)).And we are dumb enough to have these dumb appliance.Who has the answer??????

In the protection circuit we are discussing a SCR could not replace a fuse as they don't serve the same purpose. The SCR is part of a overvoltage protection circuit and a fuse protects again overcurrent. Both must be used because when the SCR triggers on it litteraly short circuits the power supply output, which in return make current try to rise to infinite.

A fuse is also more reliable and less costly than a SCR.

Solid state drives do exist actually. But the price tag is way too hefty. A 2 GB flash memory drives costs about $2000 US. Imagine the 80 GB model. There would certainly be a performance upgrade with such a drive but it wouldn't be worth the price for a home PC.

Cost is certainly a major concern for most apparatus design.

Maybe you could buy a bunch of those little "Pen Drives" and a USB hub or two and connect all that up? Think the biggest I've seen is a 512MB, which costs about as much as an 80-100GB HDD. I ain't even bought a DVD burner yet! ;)

I was about to ask where Madness had gone since i hadn't seen him in a long time! ;) Grrr!! Left a transparency on top of the SL-HF300 PS while it was on all day, and came back to find the transparency half-....well, it wasn't melted, but it was able to be pulled and stretched. Stupid PS overheating problems!

You could fry an egg on my JVC HR-S5500U. I never leave it on. Is it bad for the VCR to be left in the "On" mode, BTW? I tend to leave my 900 on a lot.

Hi all, watched the film "House" last night, have not seen fir ages. Just noticed that when he orderes all the camera equipment to catch the ghosts on film - A van pulls up and its full of Beta gear! - Betamovie looks like a SLF1 or the NTSC SL2000 etc..

Fuse is a very bad thermist, it attack component before the overvoltage can be cut off, solid state fuse works faster.About USB Hub; we can buy Compact flash reader (with a built in Flash disk)and a 512mb MicroDrive would serve as HDD or USB boot device. As Solid state HD commonly use in Industrials Computing/Controller.

I recently get a DVDburner that costs about 300$ wich is way too much, and now i heard a newer version wich makes my Burner worthless........
