What's wrong with the SL-8600? Although $ 800 does seem a bit high, even for a NIB unit, because when you get right down to it it's a old rotary tuner toploader, no hi-fi, no SuperBeta, probably 2 head, etc. But how is it any worse than the other low-end mono units?Speaking of VCRs that run hot...my SLV-R5UC is somewhat inconsistent in overheating. It seems to get hotter when I use it to copy or edit a tape from my camcorder than when I use it to record off normal TV or off DSS. Wierd.

SL-8600 won;t play BI or BIII, and it has a motor problem inherant in the design. A motor that should've been mounted vertically was mounted horizontally and will burn out.

Hey, I have ADSL and Cable, but STILL sometimes I long for a nice dial-up connection.. who would ever think that broadband would simply stop responding... but when you have something like an 80% penetration for internet in a country with 84,000,000 people, and really don't have the infrastructure... well... you do the math.. :P

I do not know much about that model. is it a portable type or a home type? If it's a portapack you might be after a power adapter, not a cord. If it's a home deck Radio Shack could most likely supply a cord.

Acoustic couplers have made a bit of revival. There's one type called a "Connex Coupler" that plugs into an existing (PC Card) modem. They're small and portable and are useful for laptop users on the go where you find those hotels/motels where the phone is hardwired to the wall. I have one for my laptop. If you have a copy of the movie "Hackers", watch the scene where they're in the train station hacking into that mainframe from the payphones. You'll see 'em there.

We'll I'm just happy that everybody leaves everybody else alone. People can talk about Fuse versus SRC or the Ebay crooks, but nobody bothers anyone else! I like it and I hope it stays this way. All I can say about fuses is that they should be user-serviceable parts in ALL cases... sorry but I can't stand pigtail fuses...

Yeah... gotta say, I hate those things. If it's a fuse, it's meant to be changed. Make it that way. They're hard to come by anyway so I do sometimes end up simply jumpering them... and yes, Brenda, I know that's bad practice. Anyhow, there is/was a product called S-clips that lets you connect a regular fuse in line with the blown one by clipping it to the end caps. Gotta look for those.

I have to agree about tipping of the snail... not only do I not care if he gets ripped off, it IS quite the different thing to tell a bidder on an auction that he shouldn't bid than it is to simply warn that a seller is bad, if I make any sense at all. One is staving off bad deals, the other is actively destroying a deal in process.

I have a Sony SL-C7UB that jitters in playback, what could be causing this? The belts need replacing, could they be the cause? I’ve read that if the capacitor C021 is faulty, it can cause poor picture sync, does this problem manifest itself as playback jitter? Is this capacitor on the board labelled noise canseller?

Any help would be appreciated

I read somewhere that it had to do with Roman chariots and using the right hand to steer and the left to whip the horses.. they stayed to the left so the whips would not become entangled when passing. This could well be apocrypha (sp?). I'm sure this being a PAL site, there are likely folks who know the real story out there somewhere. Thailand and Japan also drive on the left hand side of the road, as well as Hong Kong (Hong Kong because they were a British posession).

Australia also drives on the 'wrong' side of the road... remember "Mad Max"? If you REALLY want, Jesse, it's legal to drive right-drive cars in the states but it would be disorienting because everyone else does it the other way. At any rate, Jesse, REALLY nice cars like the Eunos should have seatbelts that adjust up and down so as not to cut into your neck. At least you don't put it behind you or something dopey like that. Also try jacking the power seat up (If what you're driving now (What?) doesn't have one, Eunos will) as far as you can stand, and running it back as far also (Toes of your foot should just comfotably touch the floor under the breaks.). Sorry for a long off-topic post...

I went looking through stuff and found something about the 'keep left' thing in that it was a vestige of the days when knights passed each other on the side they kept their swords - in case of trouble with the passer.

The same source notes that the right hand side driving custom arose from people leading oxen down the road. When people passed they stayed on the road and kept the oxen to the side.

In both case it would seem the predominance of right-handed people came into play...

Regarding right-hand driving, I'm sure those of you in the States have seen those smaller mail trucks w/ right-hand wheels. I often wondered exactly why they were so. Later found out thet they're used mainly in rural and suburban areas where people have roadside mailboxes, allowing the guy to pickup/deliver the mail w/o leaving the truck.

Ever notice that most of the areas in the world where they do drive on the "other side" are islands or isolated in some way? Yannow: Britain, Ireland, New Zealand, Japan, Australia, etc. In addition, in a number of nations in Africa, people also drive on the left; South Africa being one I can think of right-off-hand.

Well I'm not driving anything right now (not licensed, and *ahem... the powers-that-be ignore me when I talk about cars), but in the few times mum's taken me practice driving I've hated the way the seat belt gets on my neck. I prefer the passenger's side arrangement better. I think it'd be too much trouble to get a right hand drive Eunos 800 to the States... Shipping and all that. Besides, a 1995 Millenia S can be had for $3.995 around here, but as I said, the powers-that-be don't even bat an eye when I point out car ads. I've also noticed that when ppl put their Betas into the classifieds they want snail-dealer prices like $ 200 -300, even if its just a lowly mono Spamyo beta or something.

Not a bad price for a car, Jesse, especially when it's a car you want and should have no trouble getting... I do wonder, though, aren't you going to need a car when you go to college? It would be an impossibility for me without the Buick...

Hey Guys

I sell mostly video games and laserdiscs from Japan but I was interested in researching Beta machines. I can find them over here in relatively good condition but getting research on the differences between the US and Japanese models has been difficult.

Any tips? Any good web pages out there to start looking at? I found a pristine PVW-2800 model that I'd like to resell....but I just don't know about the differences...

Any info would be greatly appreciated..

Thanks,[email protected]

Yes, it is a car I SHOULD have no trouble getting; I'll probably be living on campus because my classes are fragmented throughout the day. I'm trying to get them in one contiguous block. I can't get the car because I have only like $300 in my savings account, and no one wants to co-sign for a loan (no collateral; everything's tied up!); of course if you want to make a donation you're perfectly welcome to! :) Plus insurance will be a bi^ch to pay for since I'm 17. Ugh...

Another thing, the powers-that-be believe my first car should be something like a 1982 Honda Civic or something with peeling paint, no A/C, etc. Grrr!

Jesse,

At least you could possibly afford the insurance on such a car... at your age even liability will likely be around $1200 a year... YIKES!

I've added more ßeta stuff to my for sale page. I'll be adding more still. Prices can be somewhat negotiated. Depends on the mood I'm in at the time.

USING A JAPANESE BETAMAX IN THE U.S.

There are four areas that you must be concerned with when operating a Japanese Betamax in this country. a) These machines play back through Japanese TV channels 1 or 2. Their built-in RF modulators are worthless over here. You must use them using the video and audio outputs into a monitor or another VCR.Ê b) These units do not pick up American TV channels 2-4. And, it's doubtful that their tuners will pick up our channels in stereo.Ê c) You MUST plug these into a voltage regulator, because they are made to operate at 100 volts, not 110. They will probably run too hot after a few hours and damage may result.Ê d) The Japanese warranty will not be valid here in the U.S.

The advantages of owning a Japanese Beta?Ê First, they all have linear stereo as well as Beta Hi-Fi stereo, so they have, in effect, 4 audio channels!Ê Also, selected models record at the B-Is speed (most notably, the Japanese SL-HF900). Contrary to popular belief, the ED-Beta machines from Japan do NOT record at B-I.Ê Also, they seem to have slightly better picture quality than our American-market Betas, and be better built.Ê Also, there are some models made for the Japanese market that were never released here, nor did they have an American counterpart.Ê---- from Ray Glasser's betasite

WONDERCARDMAN alias Betagoods & quality-retro is no more. Watch this chat page for future incantations. Don't you hate shill bidders?
