My Hi BAnd HI Fi Beta Records every speed.Runs on 100volts by 222volts line
Out of the stuff I picked up in Japan a couple months ago, mostly 8mm stuff, the PS's say 100 volts, but run perfectly cool at 120 volts. Same for the old mixer board I have here. I think a lot of the Japanese stuff is made to work over a pretty wide voltage range, so they don't have to make several different power supplies (or at least not AS many, with 120 volts or thereabouts being the secondary standard).

I give up, this guy is good
boy..
anyone here knows how to rebuild a tracking pot for a sl-2400 ? can you buy a similar pot and install it in its place.?
I don't see why you couldn't. SL-2400 is a rotten deck, pretty much, though, so I'd just try to get another Beta, prefferably a better one like SL-2700, SL-HF-900, and so on. At any rate, Das Imperator has a crop of bad SL-2400s and might be able to sell you the entire board.
arent the 2400s those "low-rise" betas available in that yucky brown?
how can i get a hold of emperator? :)
Need to fix to rebuild the tracking pot. I really dont want to junk he vcr since it does works except the tracking :*(
I took the pot apart hoping to " re glue " as a fix - found the possible fix in googles, but it didnt help
How about build a A Surface Mount Device "potty' and have it soldered with those cute'y pins out. Machining a Teflon Bar and shape it as core would make it as the potty shaft, isn't such a complicated idea.
Looks cool to me......

Forget your tape..?
maybe this can help
Since there's some differ of line voltages why not try changing the Transformer with the Toroidal wich can be custom ordered by your local store/manufacturer.
Toroid transformer produce fine current, extremly low Hum noise .Your Beta would love it.
Can't imagine the picture will be,........
olive_e_thomas@yah¿¿.n¿spam.c¿m
_@_v - eepers he already has a sl-100 on offer...
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3024918918
anyone wanna put money on how long till he shills?
Well, I am wondering...
Can I safely remove a tracking pot from a VHS vcr and xfer it to the beta? one that has the same resistance etc.. will that work?
What's the point of using a toroidal transformer in a switching power supply ??
I think you can easily find a replacement potentiometer at your local parts supplier. I also think it's worth replacing it (perhaps $1 plus the time you will spend replacing it) event though the SL-2400 isn't a particularly fine unit.
Like and dislike/love and hate.
Power switching and toroidal???? I dont get it Homer.
If you meant changing it into Switching PS like most computer it's OK by me.And if you put it in MobileAudio equipe, it's OK too.
But if you put it in Audiophile you'll be laugh at........
I can't get your picture,Homer.
eeeeeeeeee Jesse i cannot cent you Email...what's your's.
Damn it's complicated...
The power supply in your beta IS actually a switching power supply.
YOU suggested replacing its transformer by a toroidal one...
Who's laughable now ??
The supplies in most of mine are not switchers.. they're linear, with a standard transformer and an STK voltage regulator. I do have the SL-T700ME that has a switcher in it... that's one light machine... (too bad the loading mech is toast in it.. :( )
But wait, isn't the toroidal one better because it smooths out electrical noise, etc in the power? I'd want a PS that can give my beta clean, filtered power.
I've seen nifty devices that were used to filter & clean the power that was fed to minicomputers (PDP-8, PDP-10, Data General Supernovas, and the like)... I'm eying a couple that are in a state of limbo at the moment... not being used but not dumpstered either... I wonder, would they actually help our Betas?
SEAN: SL-2400 is an excellent mono unit. I don't see what you are going at, it provides as good as a picture as the SL-2710. I own two. I own a SL-2710 too. The SL-2400 uses the same mechanical transport/chassis as the SL-2710. I'd fix that SL-2400, the pot is a simple fix and I have had mine repaired for that too. Anyways , ignore the Beta snob cheapskates response, I'd fix that SL-2400. If you don't care about HIFI Stereo its a great unit. Leonard.
Having had the talking cousin of the SL-2400, the SL-2410, I can say that I wasn't impressed. It's a sony beta and makes a sony beta picture. But what I meant to say was it wasn't very far from that benchmark, whereas the SL-2700 is much higher. It's not actively BAD like a Sanyo tape eater, but it's got few redeaming features OUTSIDE of being a sony beta... I hope that makes sense.
Some simple view about Torroidal Transformator:
Why Isolation Transformer are build, of course the purpose is to isolate the power from its source in order to eliminate noise/spike/scatter etc.Torroid works alike.
Induction Transformer....i dont want to describe it.It's everywhere.
We can say the PS in our Beta;Half adapter and Half switching.Switching PS need no Transformator/er.
Right. I am wrong. Newer betas all have hybrid regulators.
I still can't find any advantage of using a toroidal transformer with such a regulator. Unless there are space-saving concerns.
An isolation transformer purpose is to isolate the AC power line from the DC ground. It is a safety device useful for working on apparatus that have a "live" chassis. It is a safety device. It is not meant to filter any noise.
A toroidal transformer is a transformer which primary and secondary windings are arranged in a "donut" fashion. The main advantage is that such a transformer tends to make an ideal magnetic circuit, resulting in less noise and more efficiency.
Induction is the basic phenomenon by which every single transformer work.
Was there an R missing somewhere ??
Hi I am a sissy husband and looking to chat with other sissy husbands
I have one torroid(i dont really know exact name) Transformer that have Primary and secondary winding separately. The core is like a big Chain, it's like Donut but abit square. All winding covered by lead sheet. The seller call it 'New torroid'. So why they make it separate?
Isolation TR cannot filter spike? So what's the good for making it Isolate? To protect from lightning?
They Isolate it so it'll be an 'independent' Power, if this 'independent' power can be Interrupted/bother; what good does it make.
I got it. The source is BAD the output will be the same. What a stupid idea making an isolation transformer as filter. I dont have to buy Isoaliton TR for my equipment unless to protect it from Surge?
This new Transformer seems like a Isolation TR and Torroidal.Perfectly enough for Betamania modifications.

_@_v - eeee! spotted a never seen before beta!
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3025040196
_@_v - they think it's a 'european' beta on account of the plug but i think it might be a latin american model
I got HF950 much more less than this pice.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3025040196
No, it does not protect equipment from surge.
It protects a technician from creating a nasty short circuit.
It serves for eliminating the potential between two ground points. For instance, the one from the oscilloscope from the one from your circuit, which could be connected to one side of the AC power line.
Whatever that is ,still dont give much of advantages.
Isolation Transformer serve to isolate the Load from the Source. There's a platter between primary-secondary that's connected to Earth.
ble-vah! Skip all the P/S filtering stuff and just connect your media rack to a couple of APC Smart-UPS 1000 or Back-UPS XS 1000. 1000va of capacity and has perfect line voltage regulation and filtering. Network grade-power!!! They have them for $40 at the China Harbour Memorial Flea Market here in town. Alls they needs is a $25 batty replacement. eee! SL-HF560, LOL! It looks sorta cute!
i've wanted to get the battypack for my Smart UPS 1000 but lol, have forgotten about it. Esp around here where they use hamsters to generate our power. Always fluctuating, dammit! Without the UPSes our computers would be dead. I need another small one for my parents' projection TV; it is being subjected to our horrible power. Surge protectors are crap. Buy an APC UPS! eee hee hee!
HEUHEUHEUHE American Power Conversion.......heuehue bull shyet......Best Power UPS is the best from Merlin Gerlin.
There's no plate between the primary and secondary windings.
It's a plain 1:1 transformer.
If you don't know what you're talking about, then don't talk about it.
You've said the Cheap one.....good one have platter in the middle.....dont be mad on just a simple thing......
There's no such plate.
It has nothing to do there.
I am trying to find a sl hf950 I wore my one out a long while ago.

Re: Torroidal transformers. The real reason they started using these in VCR & stereo apps had nothing to do with their performance. It was just shape and size. Back in the late 70's equipment was bigger. You impressed the girls with the size of your equipment. I mean a Sansui analog stereo tuner the size of a breadbox, with a shiny gold Marantz pre-amplifier with twenty or so knobs and switches on it, two Dynaco power amps and Klipsch speaker cabinets the size of a walk-in freezer. SQ-Quadraphonic decoder or 4-channel 8-track was mandatory. Mom always shouted "Turn it down" because she could never find the right knob herself. Heck, she did everything else for us... Around 1982, simple silver components came along and torroidal power transformers were the only things that would fit. About then the front-load VCR came along and it had to become much smaller for appearance reasons. Physical size of the power transformer was the main reason, not efficiency. I should look around my parents' basement for that old quadraphonic stuff. Oh yeah, they had a garage sale and moved into a one-bedroom apartment...
Oops, I meant SMALL silver equipment for 1982.
Looks like even ßeta-related posts are subject to removal, since the last three I posted have gone to parts unknown.. :(
It's called electrostatic shield, abut 2 millimeters thick of Copper plate.
May/maynot be connected to Ground.

Well then Brenda just keep posting until you see your posts. :) I would.
blevah! I'd rather have something I and thousand of other people love and trust, APC. I dunno what kinda stuff Merlin Gerlin is but I wouldn't trust anything other than APC to my electronics.
EDV 9500 for trade. Will trade for the following:One SL-HF2100 orOne SL-HF1000 and a second lower line machine orOne SL-HF900 and a second machine orOne SL-HF2000 and a second machine orWill entertain offers. I am considering putting it up on ebay, so please make me an offer I can refuse.
~Scott
I have a turbocharged 900 I don't want to part with, and, although you've found one of the few things that could make me part with it, I dont' have a suitable lower level deck to offer... but I may come into one, so we'll see...
I have decided that I will entertain offers for my SL-HF1000. I'm sure I'll get some people trying to insult me, but I'll just ignore those. :P I hate to do it, but I just have to get rid of all this stuff.. if you could see my home, you would understand why. I've been an ebayholic for over two years, and, as I used to have more money than brains, now I have neither..
Welle Jesse I like APC too.....It's just too heavy.APC is good enough.Just carry on APC.I used to have Back pack 1000......Iwas kidding on APC.eheuheuehu
Well, I finally got around to opening up my recently aquired SL-5200 and ajusting the "CAP FREE" pots. I adjusted the ones for ßII and ßIII (No ßI tapes to test with) and now it plays normally, it can read hi-fi tapes properly, and the rhythmic snow flashes in the picture are gone. :) However, clearing up this problem revealed a second one. Anywhere betweeen every 10 and 30 seconds (sometimes more, sometimes less) it will lose tracking for a moment. The picture will roll and tear vertically (and sometimes horizontally too, creating a "ghosted" effect like a distant TV station)and it will switch over to the linear soundtrack. Then in a couple seconds it will recover itself and switch back to normal picture and hi-fi sound. In another 10 to 30 seconds, it repeats this. If I watch the cassette while doing this, I can actually see the supply reel slowing down slightly when this happens. When it gets back up to speed the picture and sound clear back up. Since in between these incidents everything is normal, I assume there is something wrong with the tape drive that is causing this. Anyone know where I can get parts for an SL-5200?
Sounds like it's still a capstan related problem. I would try moving the capfree pots back a bit toward their original positions. It's also possible that you have a capacitor that is charging up slowly, then discharging (dried out?).
I need sum loving
Jeez it looks like some moron is posting under Tom's name again... and it's THEY who accuse US of having no life! Now THAT'S funny.
Hey tom:
While you are at it, get me sum loving too!!
Oh come on you ass, at least try to mimick the style of writing of the person you're defaming... unless you're a total moron you know I would most likely not use such a misspelling as "Sum" in place of "Some".
yah, need sum asses too!
lick my snailslick! lick it! lick i-i-i-it!
http://www.zingtang.demon.co.uk/snails/Sky.jpg
Yes, he's doing it again... in that context, you do not make "Ass" plural... you continue to use "Ass" as in "He gets more ass than a toilet seat". Come on you insufferable philistine, knock it off...
HI EVERONE DOES ANY ONE HAVE OR KNOW WHERE I CAN OBTAIN "THE SERVICE MANUAL FOR SL-HF950 " SUPER BETAMAX NOT THE USER MANUAL. WHEN I TURN IT ON I GET A CONTINIOUS CLICKING SOUND AND THE TAPE WILL NOT LOAD. I FEEL THIS MIGHT BE A BROKEN SPROCKET AND DO NOT WISH TO OPEN IT UP WITHOUT A SERVICE MANUAL OR ONLY AS A LAST RESORT. I ALSO DON'T WANT TO PAY SONY $120 FOR A ONE TIME USE OF THERE MANUAL. SO ANY HELPFUL SUGGESTIONS ARE APPRECIATED.
Looking for bestiality porn on Beta. Anyone of you cheapskates willing to let me have some at less than 'snail' prices?
sean:guess we know the real culprit now!!
Looks like we do... What gives, anyway?
whatcha mean,sean?
I mean why do we attract so many trolls? What is there problem?
damn, if im wrong ,someone could be impersonating leonard!!
dunno sean .maybe they all got kicked off the stamp collectors site.
Bobby mentioned getting an SL-HF 950. Maybe he has the service manual...
Sean,
Please spank me.. I am being a bad boy! so naughty!
Hi
Sadly Alan Barnett is no longer repairing Betamax machines in London - I have a Sony C9 with a dodgy DCDC converter (mkII) - does anyone know of someone in the London area who can fix these? Please email me if you do.
I see on ebay that a c9 is going for nearly £ 200, so mine is obviously worth fixing. I have a complete and boxed c20 with instructions etc. I wonder wether thats worth anything....
Cheers
Nigel
Hi all,I have a Sony SL-HFT7 Beta HI-FI and no manual. This unit plays BetaII and betaIII tape formats. My question is : Can this unit play regular Beta tapes? What is the difference between Beta,Beta I,Beta II,Beta III Tapes ?Thank you ,Gaetan
BI, BII, and BIII are just speeds. The HFT-7 is semi-famous for playing back almost any tapes. It should play all your BI, BII, and BIII tapes as well as it should also handle BIs and anything else superbeta.
Francess I'm not getting HF950. I got it already few months ago.I dont have service manual and I dont really need it to service.
Miss ya Francess............
Nigel,
There is a regular here that IIRC was rebuilding DC-DC convertors. His name is Colin Judd. He lives in Oz, but the item is so small that the post on it would not be prohibitive from the UK. Unfortunately, he is in hospital as of this writing for bypass surgery. Please e-mail me, and I'll get you his e-mail addy by private e-mail.
Hello, You people know that I do not post dirty or nasty messages. I know that certain people on this page have taken acception to my exposing shill bidding (Such as KRIS) and others. I hope we can stick with messages either condoning the shill bidding as Kris did or condeming it. BUT please Kris, Dont use my name to aim your anger.
This is very discouraging. I didnt think such things would happen on a Beta chat page.
Psychotic Tom,
Needless to say it is not me impersonating you. I have a life and much better things to do with it. I just happened to surf in and saw your accusation which is absurd. But if it moves your boat, do it. It may solve your illness.
As I said before about shill bidding. Just bid with a set amount and if it goes over then that's life. If a shill bid happens, so what? You still are going to spend that amount, so just live with it, moron. Enough said.
Hey tom... While I don't like that nasty impersonator any more than you do, we don't need to jump to any conclusions... Kris may not like your practices, but he's enough of a man to argue about it under his own name like a normal human... besides, if you scroll up a bit, last night there was a clue as to the impersonator... it might still be there...
Gaetan, look for little green paint marks at the left side of most of the slide switches on your SL-HFT7. These mark the default positions and give predictable results. As Sean said, that model can play almost any Beta mode except the elusive ED-Beta which mere mortals never live to see anyway. Slow-motion and other special effects only work at the slow Beta-III speed, since 2-head decks can only be optimized for one particular speed. Most commercial studio releases were recorded at Beta-II speed; almost nothing was ever released at the fast Beta-I speed.
So be it Sean, I might have jumped to conclusions about Kris, Im not going to change his mind about his weird feelings on Shill Bidding on ebay. I will take him at his word he is not the copy cat impersonator. Looking at past posts I think I know the person doing this.Must get back to ebay to monitor for shills. LOL
EDV 9500 for trade. Will trade for the following: One SL-HF2100 or One SL-HF1000 and a second lower line machine or One SL-HF900 and a second machine or One SL-HF2000 and a second machine or Will entertain offers. I am considering putting it up on ebay, so please make me an offer I can refuse.

What the hell? It wasnt even me that typed the above message. I just came back to the board today just to find more of a circus scene around here. Whoever wrote a message to TOM was not even me!. WTF? Although I have to admit that I love to say sentences like " rock your boat " etc, it surely was not me.
This is getting insane. I havent posted any messages since I have been trying to get my beta to work!!
This is getting very weird
OK, this is it folks. The SLHF-1000 is officially on the market (at least for the time being. See the ad at my sitepage:
http://fullspectrumradio.jadephoenix.org/forsale.htm
Pix link at bottom of page. Other ßeta items also available.
meanie! pooor 1000... you'd better do a background and ebay ID check of the person you sell it to! how about a nice graduation present, brenda? lol, and that clickety-clackety 950 sound like a good candidate for the Wards Home. That post about being kicked off the stamp collector site was also funny, lol. haha... I wonder WHY we attract so many trolls. anyone have any ideas?
I may just do that. :) Wouldn't want my baby to go to one of those abusive foster homes. (I'm the original owner of this one.)
yay! And you know that it will not be abused or sold, and will be hooked up to clean, regulated power, too.
Hey Brenda... how about letting Jesse hang onto your 1000 until your living conditions stabilize... I'm sure he'd take good care of it... I suggest this because of all of us regulars he's a bit Beta-deprived.. I don't think he even had a SuperBeta... But the rest of us have at least one, I think... Oh, Brenda, I haven't forgotten your power cord or your money order or anything... sorry... and Jesse, whenever you can, I'd like my $24 back since you decided not to sell the 300.
