Not that I, of all people, mind toilet humor, but technology that swears seems to fascinate normal mortals... I remember back in grade school we had PowerPCs that had a little program on it for the little kiddies that would talk, and the 7th and 8th graders would have a ball making the program say the seven deadlies......

That's 121 degrees Fahrenheit, not Celcius!
LOL I tought it was Celcius.......good idea though
How do ya bake it exactly..?...with Microwave...?...
Not with the microwave. Conventional oven. LOL, hehehe... Let's microwave a JVC deck and see if it still works. Or hook up the Destruct-o-Tron (from that "Mikes Electric Page") to it and see what happens, while it's playing a tape. I wanna see all the sparks and fire! :P :P :P
_@_¼¼ [([oo])::]
You should be carefull in baking tapes not to pass their Curie point which is the poit where if you heat a magnetic particle ti will begin to randomise and/or take on the characterisics of other magnetic particles.
Bobby,
I must admit that I baulked at the temperature of 120 deg, but then on thinking about it, I realisde it must be deg F because otherwise the case would warp, -but using a Microwave!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The metal leader would probably fry first and that's apart from the damage caused by the water molecules rapidly heating (because 2.4GHz is about their resonant frequency) and melting the layers of tape to oneanother. It's almost worth sacrificing a tape to see what really happens.
There are dozens of web sites detailing the fun you can have putting different items in the microwave oven... I think tha electricstuff page has links to them...
I know that...but baking a Audio Tape.?...geee never heard it.
Putting the tape into Vacuum Chamber seems logical at some point.
I still dont get the term " baking "
well, what do you do to a cake? You bake it. :) Same thing with the tape, only you are not preparing it for eating, you are preparing it for playing. LOL!
The idea is that with time, tape plastics deteriorate and leaves gaps open to humidity. Humidity makes the tape expand, therefore losing correct tracking.
Baking it is not actually baking it. It's more like heating it just enough so the humidity evaporates, so the tape goes back to its normal state.
Of course, this does not bring back the good condition of the tape plastics, so the problem will come back after a while.
I know "baking" is just a figure of speech.....heuehueheuheu
Sometimes, especially with 15+ years VCRs, the "clogging heads" problem is less of a tape condition problem than a head wear problem.
As heads wear over time, their core becomes rougher, the drum becomes smoother, heads makes a harder contact with the tape and tends to "scratch" their surface, gathering the oxyde of the tape.

Olive,
Did you get to pick up your SL-T50ME? Hope it made it there in good condition, I tried to pack it to make the trip.
Also, everyone... Colin is back home, after quad bypass surgery, and doing OK.

olive_e_thomas@yah¿¿.n¿spam.c¿m
_@_v - well i'm officially a legitimate §etaPAL poster now...
_@_v - sleechy-T50ME came today and it's totally awesome! haddda replace the cassette doors which were prolly removed at some point because of a poorly designed light fixture that I ended up removing (lite burned out anyway) to be able to have tape flipper doors.
_@_v - i've noticed that none of my beta remotes will work with this unit. did sony make different remote codes for the T50 ME or PAL betas that aren't compatible with NTSC §eta remotes?
_@_v - now alls i needs is some sleechy PAL/SECAM tapes to feed my new §eta baby...
_@_v - i'm a happy happy snail...
Yeah Olive... I've heard that those units need a special remote that was I think unique to the multisystem ones... I'd check the Sony DAPC just in case, however. You never know. Well at any rate I think you'll need something capable of displaying a PAL signal to work with it, I think... But then again lots of Macintosh computers have video inputs... my PC has them and it will handle any video standard except really obscure stuff like British 405-line and 875 line X-ray video...
olive_e_thomas@yah¿¿.n¿spam.c¿m
_@_v - Well, you're right about Macintoshes being able to nominally handle PAL signals. I have a digital camera with PAL output capability and it was able to show a PAL picture through the T50 to the Mac. It was an odd aspect ratio and not centered but it was in color.
Output to my TV was a B/W image slightly out of phase or sorta flickery so I guess I'll need a PAL converter box or something like that to play PAL tapes. When Brenda sends me the 2 or 3 PAL tapes she'd managed to acquire I'll know for sure...
Hi all,I have a Sony betamax SL HFR 70 VCR with a defective load mechanism. One guide pin (there are two of them) that flips up at the periphery of the wind-up ring when the tape loads has broken. Now I am looking for either such pin, or, another broken or pretty well any condition (with intact pins, of course)SL HFR 70 Betamax unit.I am in Canada, Ontario. Can anyone help, I would hate to give up my Beta.
Is the pin broken or broken off? If it's just bent wrong you can maybe coax it back into place. Otherwise that's gonna be an exasperating pain to replace...
Olive,
I think it's cheaper to buy a PAL capable TV anymore than it is to buy a convertor. My current computer monitor is a totally sleechy LG that has built in TV tuner for NTSC/PAL/SECAM and NICAM stereo audio (which is what Korea uses for stereo TV sound). I don't know if it will deal with BTSC/MTS sound or not, since I have no way to test that here. But the tuner is nice, it just goes and finds whatever is out there, and you lable it yourself (channel number plus 8 characters of text) I take it you forced PAL output just to see what it looked like on your NTSC television.. *ggg* Not to worry, there are two PAL tapes and your remote on their way to you, hopefully it will not be too long a wait for those.
Hello everyone
Can anyone please tell me if the Sony SL-C9 has HIFI Stereo or not?The machine has RCA connectors for left and right, but it doesn't say anything about stereo on the deck. The manual is lost unfortunately. And if it's no hassle, what is that ED mode on NTSC versions? That is some kind of longplay mode right? Is there a page that shows all the features of the NTSC models?
Thanks a lotRegardsMax
The SL-C9 is somewhat superiour to its NTSC cousin the SL-2500 because the C9 has Linear audio. it's got no HiFi sound but stereo sound. Tapes that have that kind of stereo MIGHT have the words "Dolby noise reduction on the linear tracks" since Linear Stereo was released for consumers where the C9 was released... over here we have some VHS decks with linear stereo and they say that on the tapes for them... I have a linear stereo VHS deck with dolby and at SP the sound is OK (It's a pro deck so it handles no other speed)... I can't immagine it at something like SLP though.... ugh....
Eeee! Found a 1983 Canon portable VHSamie (penisonique OEM presumably) that has Dolby. It says its a "4 HEAD" but I only find 2 heads on the drum. Did they mount them right after each other (1,2) (3,4)? Anyways, this VHSamie has the clearest still picture I've ever seen! And it's (I think) only a 2 head (even though it says 4)! I just wish it had a remote, though. Saw an old Spamyo toploader @ the flee market... Stupid moron wanted $80 for it!
olive_e_thomas@yah¿¿.n¿spam.c¿m
_@_v - eee! does ennybody have a service manual for the SL-T50ME? i wanna get the part number and or spex for the various incandescent indicator lights - yes this fluquer uses incandescent lights all over the place. i hadda replace one of the ones that indicated the system being used (PAL/SECAM/NTSC4.43/NTSC2.58) but i hadda use whatever small bulb that came to hand (and I couldn't use x-mas tree bulbs) and it's not as bright as the rest of them.
_@_v - also i'm sure the rest of them are likely to fizz out sooner or later....
_@_v - it's funny that this not only had a light to tell you there was a tape inside but it had a light that glowed under the tape door (the one i had to remove in order to have a working tape door in place) when a tape was inserted - belt and suspenders...
_@_v - i wish Sony had made a multisystem VCR more geared to North American users. like with a channel 2/3 rf output and standard US RCA and RF jacks instead of the European connectors this thing has. I'd be amazed if Radio Shack actually has the connectors I'd need to hook this up to my cable TV...
_@_v - dang tho it's transport functions are like butter - Sony musta outsourced with Land-o-lakes on this model.
_@_v - and the slo-mo and still frame are as near perfect as you can ever expect to get with a 2 head VCR...
eepah! I knaux what you mean; my VP-5000 u-mie is the same way with ultra-smooth (gentle super-well-maintained govt u-mie rumble, awww!) loading ring assembly. It's superquiet and gives off a gentle rumble.
Olive you are a lucky, lucky woman... I think those multisystem models are mostly relatives of my SL-HF-900 and its kin (GCS-50, etc...) so understandabley they would be spectacular... I had my eye on sunking's SL-800ME but he wanted $ 30 just for the shipping and the ol' green is being saved around here. At any rate I envy you. as to incandescent lamps, try these on for obscure... try finding one that will work as the tape detection lamp in a Umatic deck. Try finding a display lamp for a Marantz 2220B reciever! Looks like a fuse but ISN'T one! BWAHAHAHAH!!!!
Rrrghh! Absolutebeta got his grimey hands on the 800ME ! he paid $37 for it (Plus shipping...) and you gaurantee it'll go up most likely 1000%
Olive: Y'wanna PAL tape for your T-50ME? Still have this "Buggs Bunny Show" tape which I believe is from the UK. Be happy to ship it off t'ya if ya want. I have no way to view it here.
Olive, Radio Shack should still have "grain of wheat" or "grain of rice" bulbs in stock. Those should be 12V ones (Catalog #: 272-1141) on that machine. All the bulbs worked when I was using it, so some must have been on the edge and didn't survive the trip.. sorry. :(
I believe I have the channel output set up for UHF 31 or 35, I'm not sure. I thought I had given you a set of BNC>RCA adaptors with that, if not, then I will send them to you. Also should have been a PAL>F adaptor as well. Let me know, please.
Sean:Those "fuse lamps" have typically been available at Radio Shack also. If not, then you can order them from MCM Electronics (25-090). I believe most of those were 8 Volt, but they have 6 and 12V as well.
Olive:
BTW, Radio Shark DOES have those adaptors, you can pick them up there if you really need them in a hurry, but as I have them here, I can ship them off to you. They really should have been in the box with the machine.
Thanks for the info, Brenda. Radio shack doesn't have the fuse lamps any more... I gave them fits trying to find them... special ordered some bulbs that met the voltage specs and read in the description of base "End caps"... they were perhaps threefold too large physically... I couldn't send them back, they're still floating around here somewhere. I did find them eventually from a local TV shop (It's GOOD to be friends with TV repairmen.)
On a funny sidenote, every time someone said they'd send me a deck with some adapters (VCRGary has done this, among other people, but don't hold it against him, he's busy and I'm otherwise impressed with the quality of his services overall (mostly based on tech support he's given me)) but I've frequently bought decks "as-is" only to find many helpful adapters on the back pannel!!!
Hi guys, my beloved SONY SLC6AS PAL Betamax has finally been cured of its capstan servo lock failure and i will be able to play my hundreds of originals again.Although i have plenty, i want more, do any of you guys in the UK have some horror, sci fi,action & adventure, comedy or suspense movies for sale. Are there any australians on here that have some for sale. Must be originals only.I find myself lucky that my machine which cost me $50 dollars five years ago has run extremely well, with only new belts being needed late last year. _@_v - Reelmaster by any chance do you live near Perth? My mom is visiting a 'long lost' aunt thisOctober. Any helpful tourist info would be appreciated.
_@_v - Anyone have a copy of the SL-T50-ME manual? If I input an NTSC signal can I turn it into a PAL tape? And play it back as NTSC?
_@_v - Brenda, there was one BNC connector on the back of the VCR but no other adapters as far as I could tell. might hafta rattle the box in case there were more.
_@_v - also I think the one light that burnt out that I replaced was running for a little while but subsequently died while I was working on the VCR. This will probably be an occasional-use VCR like my SL-5400 unless I can get it to output PAL to my regular TV. I don't think my poor TV can take yet another Beta stacked on top of it unless I can custom-make a shelf or something....
olive_e_thomas@yah¿¿.n¿spam.c¿m
_@_v - eeeee! all them tasty beta movies! you'll never hafta leave the house...
_@_v - you ever record episodes of this australian comedy show about broadcast journalism? i forget the title but comedy central ran a few episodes of it in the 90s. one of the episodes concerned this poor guy's wife getting eaten by a croccie and the devious way the reporter and his editor manages to snag an interview...
olive_e_thomas@yah¿¿.n¿spam.c¿m
_@_v - and yeah i'd love a bugs bunny PAL tape. just cut the 'n¿spam' and change the ¿¿'s to oo's...
Olive:
I think I can answer your PAL/NTSC question. From what I was able to find out, if you try to record an NTSC signal while in PAL mode (forced), it will basically leave you with a mess. This is because of the scan rates being different on NTSC and PAL (15,750/60 vs. 16,750/50) and since the tracking aligns itself with the horizontal sync pulses, you most likely would have no sync on the resultant recording. You can always (well, more or less) play back PAL tapes on a modern NTSC television (because they can sync to a wider range of pulses than the old sets) but it may roll, and of course will not have color.
Note: there are actually TWO tuners in that machine, and you need to select PAL/SECAM or NTSC inside the tuner adjustment panel to be able to receive your local stations. PAL/SECAM use a 7 MHz wide channel with audio at 5.5 MHz above the video, where NTSC uses a 6 MHz wide channel with audio 4.5 MHz above the video (both systems place the video carrier 1.5 MHz above the lower channel edge).
Olive:
This is the best price I have found on a PAL>NTSC convertor. Read the ad carefully, as it is mainly for NTSC>PAL, but they also sell the other way round.

Linear Audio refers to the 'line' or band of audio track that runs the length of the recorded tape. The linear audio head is separate from the rotating 'helical-scan' video head, and is fixed in place to record it's track along that edge of the tape. This had also records the control track along the bottom edge of the tape.
The video (and HiFi audio) is recorded in diagonal swaths by the rotating video heads along the centre band of the video tape.
================================= <-audio track
///////////////////////////////// <-video (and HiFi) tracks
--------------------------------- <-control track
The tracks I drew don't seem to line up right but you should get the basic idea.
================================= <-audio track
///////////////////////////////////////////////////////// <-video (and HiFi) tracks
----------------------------------------- <-control track
Third time's the charm.
========================== <-audio track (one track for mono, two for linear stereo)
///////////////////////////////////////////////////////// <-video (and HiFi) tracks
----------------------------------------- <-control track
But you forgot to put the legal disclaimer that they "aren't drawn according to scale." :P
Of course, Jesse, they aren't drawn to scale. Television picture simulated. Your results may vary. Batteries not included. Do not fold, spindle or mutilate.

On top of being contradictory, your comments are off-topic.
jesse---it is a type of tape motion indicator--
hmph... I wonder why sony chose RED as the display/tapscreen indicator. Too bad it couldn't have been green. Well, I wonder if Sony will produce a 50th anniversary Betamax, LOL.... :( I also wonder how many of ours will be working by then!
LONGH@RNmilestoneFIVE
That's not contradictory, a Reality that we face.Off topic yes, but a good input for everyone who likes computing.Seems to me its a BETA version though 'he' didnt mention it.It's very fast in Installations, gorgeous Desktop Interface, have a Taskbar and SlideBar.Broadband oriented connections, Added folder properties. IE version 6.05,WME 9.0 etc. Many development here and there but still a twin of XP professional. Took time to reach Final version, hope don't end up like Millenium.
Not bad for a 'BETA' version.
The calendar in my 1000 goes as far as 2065. Or somewhere around there. I certainly expect it to work until then ! Why would they have made the calendar that long if it was not supposed to reach that date ??
The HF1000 goes upta 2065?? I'll havta check mine when I get home. As for why, I guess the same question applies to computers: Why does the bios clock go upto 2099 when any given system is obsolete within a year or so? One of those unknowns.
Well, do you really expect a Windoze PC to last until then? Maybe it will be fine for some grandma who wants to check her mail or something and print out recipes, etc. BTW Brenda I found a Sony Component Tuner model VTX-1100R. Is that similar to what you were talking about? I have yet to hook it up, but looks like I can finally ditch the Spamsung for stereo audio on my Sleech-300.
I"ve got one of those VTX-tuners, Jesse. They're neat to play around with and make good distribution boxes for signal and they convert RF to video and vice-versa. Nifty item. Full functionality is not achieved without the monitor they go to, which is something like KV-1900CH but I'm not sure.
grrrr! Well, Sean, does it output true stereo audio or just "hifi" like the 300? I am so confused with mine! I want to use it as a tuner so I can have stereo audio on the 300, but it doesn't give me line video out; it's so confusing!
Do you mean does it output MTS television stereo? I'm not sure about the VTX-1100R, I have the VTX-1000R and it does not say anything about MTS on it and you'd think there would be a way to monitor to see if the MTS is comming in. I doubt that it does. The VTX-1100R might, it might not. I do not have to worry about that as my cable system has boxes with stereo outputs.
olive_e_thomas@yah¿¿.n¿spam.c¿m
_@_v - does that tuner thingie have a SAP switch? does it have an MPX plug?
_@_v - if it doesn't have a SAP switch and does have an MPX plug it's probably a mono tuner intended for use with the MLV-1100 MTS adapter.
olive_e_thomas@yah¿¿.n¿spam.c¿m
_@_v - with a model number of VTX-1100R it's likely that it was intended to mate with the MLV-1100.
Yes I think it has an MPX plug. It could probably be used with that MPX adapter...
Yep it's got an MPX plug... see it there in the photo in this auction for one? The case of that remote is milled from solid aluminum, it weighs about 45 pounds. At any rate the MTS adapter would look really cool with that thing... Now I've gotta hunt one down for mine... so we know the VTX-1000R needs an adapter, but does the VTX-1100R???
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3026625829&category=21517
Seems to be the basic tuner for that series of Trinitons... can anyone confirm if it's the KV-1900CH? The 6-pin DIN output is also on the VTX-1000R
Madness, that's 2085 actually.
When BIOS clock go crazy, try check the Lithium Batt maybe weak-//-the connector might not have a good contact to the batt surface //there's static interference in your MOBO//some software bug//.
Try update the Flash BIOS using flash utility from your MOBO manufacturer.((dont do this unless you know what you're doin)).
Hope it is 2003.

Several people have recently mentioned multistandard Betas with SECAM. Is that SECAM L for France or one of the other variants such as East or Middle East or the B/G used in parts of Africa? I do TVDX, and when conditions are right I can receive from Caen, Boulogne, Dunkerque and Lille in northern France. I can watch in colour on my multistandard TV, but can only record in B/W. I've considered buying a cheap VHS VCR when I'm in Paris - they're all dual standard now - but if I do buy I'd prefer Beta. Would have to be very cheap though!
Isn't SL800ME is a good choice for backup.
Bill,
As far as I can see from the charts, the only difference in SECAM systems is the channel layout. The tuners in the SL-T**ME series are not locked to specific channels, so should be able to be tuned to just about any station within their tuning range.
olive_e_thomas@yah¿¿.n¿spam.c¿m
_@_v - The SL-T50ME says that it gets Secam 1 and 2...
_@_v - seems it was only a matter of time before the one you sent me would attract a crowd...

Thank you all for helping me out. I have still another question concerning linear audio:Linear stereo as being implemented in the C9 is the same as the mono sound on mono VHS VCRs? Apart from not being stereo, it's the same method of recording the sound, right? Do any VHS VCRs have linear Stereo?Another question to Super Beta Pro: This probably also existed on NTSC machines. Are PRO-X tapes still being produced? I can find normal beta tapes in a few stores in town but no PRO-X tapes. Are the tapes made for a specific video format? Or could I use NTSC PRO-X tapes in my PAL machine?
Thanks a lot for you help
RegardsMax
The linear stereo on the SL-C9 is basically the mono channel split into two tracks. I don't think the tuner on the C9 could pick up a stereo signal but if you have a cable box or satellite reciever (or another VCR) with stereo output you could record a stereo signal through the line-in jacks. Also if you have a video camera like the HVC-4000P which has a pair of external microphone plugs and two microphones you could record a live image in stereo. You could also audio dub in stereo or leave one track alone and dub narration onto the second track. HiFi had better sound, but you couldn't post dub HiFi onto a tape.
I think maybe some of the early VHS machines had linear stereo till video HiFi came out in the mid-80s. Professional-grade VHS machines have linear stereo as well as HiFi stereo.
Does anyone know if Sony released any profesional-grade Betas with insert video and audio editing capability - like the NTSC GCS-50 or the SLO-383 VCRs?
2085 on the 1000 calendar?? Calendars have been one of my only gripes with Sony VCRs. The calendars on my two decks only go through 15 years- 1990-2005 on the SLV-R5UC, and 1993-2008 on the SLV-751HF. The SL-HF600 and SL-5200 don't have internal calendars. Regarding the post about linear stereo on VHS decks: I have 2 portable VHS recorders from the early or mid 80's that have linear stereo, and my high school has two JVC industrial VHS decks and a Panasonic prosumer deck that have linear stereo. Likewise these also date from the early 80's. All of the linear stereo decks also have "Dolby System" noise reduction. Like Franny said, linear stereo was essentially phased out when VHS hi-fi was introduced because the sound quality of hi-fi was vastly superior (especially in the LP and EP modes, where the tape runs slow and really reduces the linear sound quality). I have noticed that quite a few pre-recorded movies are still recorded in linear stereo (and with Dolby NR) which is pretty funny considering that harldly anybody has a linear stereo VCR or one that can decode the noise reduction.
but still NR makes things a lil quieter. I suppose that my Penisonique OEM (Canon) VHSamie portable is a linear stereo one. Damn it.... I wanted HIFI! :(
Does anyone know if a Betamax Deck will play a BetaSP tape?
No it will not, and it's not advisable to put it in your beta deck as it will wear away the heads. Or so I've been told. How can you say no to this face!!? http://198.64.168.72/A123IH/4b88da44-1432-4d7a-8377-68e1ef3e76d2/JM1TA221521724193/07/webimage001l.jpg
eeee! - (oo)(=(*_*)=)(oo) ____@_** lum-di-dum..... :) Do any of you use your betas every day to record a TV show you catch daily or something? I do, AMC! LOL!
I'm not a soap opera person but I sure as hell use my HF-900 to do my "everyday" recordings. I have tons of tapes including Pro-X tapes. My camcorder stuff is now split between my GCS-1 and my CCD-V110 (What you'd call a "Pro8amie", Jesse). If it's something I really want to keep, it's either done as BIs on a Pro-X or if it's longer I blow in for an S-VHS tape to feed the HR-S5500U.

Can anyone help: I have the original Sony Betamax C7 VCR machine which needs repairs to the 'charcoal heads' I am told. Does anyone know where to service this great machine in the Greater London (UK) area?
That's not a 'charcoal' head It's a Rotary Head/Like Carbon Based Metallic compound.
Mostly 'Two Eye' Rotary Head can be replaced by Comparison Table;ie(Like HF150 Head can be used to HF77 and vice versa). I have the Chart but i forgot where i put.Two Head VCR more easier to replace than 4 one/easy to find part and comparison item.
Dont worry be happy.
I have 2 questions I hope someone can answer. First is there a difference between beta and betamax or is one just short for the other. Second, how big are these tape(s) in relation to a VHS tape. Hope someone can answer this, thanks.
Beta, Betamax, Betacord, Betavision, are all the same. "Beta" is just short for Betamax and the others are the names from different companies. The tapes are a bit smaller than VHS, almost exactly the size of a paperback novel. They're a little heavier too because the construction is better.
I have 2 old beta players that no longer work. If anyone would like themfor parts if interested please email. thanksSL-HFT7 Beta HiFiSL-HF750 SuperBeta HiFi
