_@_v - well tape time or picture quality isn't all that much of an 'issue' for me. what matters is Beta's faster transport response time. I rarely make unattended recordings and prefer Beta's transport abilittes when i'm taping out a show's commercials.

_@_v -especially if I'd blown the intro cue and have to quickly stop, go back and set up for the right cue before the show i'm taping comes back from commercial...

_@_v - VHS - even the machines that keep the tape lace up - just takes too long...

I love my 300's timer record feature (Except for the fact that come a minor brownout it forGEts everything), it stops and starts right on a dime! Tell it to start at 11:59 and it starts exactly at 11:59, LOL, with no 30 second or so lag like the Spamsung used to do.

The best timer unit on a Beta is found on the SL-2710 where you punch-in start / stop times and channels with numeric keypad instead of going with +/- buttons. It also started right on time. But any slightly serious timer should do that, even on a VHS. Perhaps you set the clock 30 seconds too late ??

Just went back on that webmasterworld.com forum Jesse. It shows that you did not understand very much of what was said in the article. At the time the product went out on the market there was no L-750 tapes and no BII speed. That's the whole point behind the "only 1-hour" issue. Somehow I'm sure Beta is for you more of a novelty than a product you use for the sake of quality. Just like u-matic for example.

I also find it funny that people always trash DVDs in here then tells how "good" DVD-to-Beta dubs are !

This is only my humble opinion which if you can remark doesn't make use of terms such as STUPID and IDIOT to express disagreement to one's own opinion.

Brenda... Oh, I see. I had seen it missspelled as "Mortron" so I though it was some science fiction refference like some fierce critter like a Dalek. Ooops. At any rate, regarding the DVD-Beta dubs, When people talk about how bad DVD looks, they're discussing individual errors that are on some discs. Because DVD is digital, it's easier to have errors or low quality. When we transfer DVD-Beta, we're talking about the generational quality loss, which will be low on a good format like Beta. This has to do with the dubbing format, not the one we dub from, because the quality of that doesn't matter, it's how well the record deck retains that quality, whatever it is, that counts.

_@_v - Just so you know Betamax isn't a 'novelty' in my video environment. It's alive and doing very well thank you...

_@_v~ - spblblblblt!

_@_v - And Betamax didn't stay a 1 hour format for very long. By at least 1977 Sony had brought out the X2 speed SL-8200 and SL-8600 and SL-3000 VCRs and by 1979 the BIII speed SL-5400. If Sony had been able to come out with a reliable L-1000 tape in 1980 (and kept in the BI record speed) the format war might've lasted a little longer.

_@_v - Sony should've also put in better tuners in their Betas especially the ones with all-electronic tuning. There was no earthly reason to have a meager 14 presets and VHF tuning that ends at cable channel 36 if you can build a decent 125 cable - 75UHF channel tuner like Sony was able to do for the SL-2710 and SL-HF 600 and some other high end Betas.

_@_v - Since I have a Sony VHS deck with full cable tuning capacity that's not a very big problem for my SL-HF 360.

IMHO the timer on the Sony 900 and similar, with the jog shuttle control, are the easiest to set. I can set a timer recording in 18 seconds.

erfems.. Well Beta isn't a novelty in my house, and I do appreciate the quality. I exclusively use Beta for my taping needs. My VHS deck is only used as a tuner, so I can get true stereo audio to the 300 and make quality recordings. U-mie is sort of more a novelty, I guess, because I don't have a recorder (yet) and very few tapes.

Olive: Yeah, I agree, since the recording times were one of the more obvious differences between Beta and VHS, and of the early VCRs Beta did have the shortest time, VHS having 2 hours, as did VX (Quasar) and V-cord II. But that was fixed, in short order, and Beta eventually beat those other formats (Even though VX might have looked as good, and V-cord II was four heads like the SL-5800.) I use my betas a lot, for all sorts of stuff. since the most I can get on an 8mm tape is 2 hours, the GCS-1 has an immediate advantage over the CCD-V110, although they both look the same (I think it was the same image sensor technology, if not the same image sensor). I agree about the tuners, I've had trouble with Sony's solid-state tuners on there high end decks (the entire RF section of my old SL-HF-1000 died, pretty much, and my 900s RF modulator is very poor indeed, and the RF modulator in my SLO-323 was dead when I got it (fortunately that's a replaceable commodity). But since I have a cable box that outputs HiFi stereo audio at line level, I don't need the use RF for much anymore.

Re: Betamax tuners, before about 1982 cable systems were not built to carry any signal abouve 300mHz. The equipment was never designed to do so because anything beyond a 36-channel universe was unimaginable. Cable had a low % subscribers because there was almost nothing available on it that couldn't be picked up for free with something called a 300-ohm VHF/UHF antenna that we used to get from Radio Shack (amplifier optional). http://www.radioshack.com/images/ProductCatalog/ProductImage/15/15-2156.jpg

The varactor tuner with 14 user-preset buttons was considered a great improvement over the original rotary tuners which tended to need rebuilding every few years. TV's and VCR's switched to varactor tuners when low-priced IC versions were developed.

When Ted Turner brought C-band signals to a cable system near you, every mile of cable and every distribution amp had to be replaced in order to get all these new choices to the consumer. Finally there was a reason to get cable into the average house, and finally a reason to develop the quartz-synthesized 125-channel tuners we all take for granted. This all came together in the mid-80's when many of you were watching Care Bears for the first time. Only a few Betamax models came with these 125-channel tuners because the technology was not available until the last dozen or so Betamax models hit the market.

Novelty?? Novelty-smovelty! Beta is quite alive and well in this boiz pad! I've built me quite a large library of new(er) films on beta using DVDs and Betacam tapes for high quality, hifi-surround tapes. Hell, I've recently been adding some favorite TV-show (i.e. Buffy S4, most recent) collections from the "seasonal" DVD boxsets (quite a nice way to use up this huge load of BC-10's I've acquired). In fact, I've coined a term for this: I don't "dupe" a DVD, I "B'max" it! ;)

Guess the tuners on some of my decks are cheezy, but I never use 'em anyhow. If there's not a DVD players connected, then a DirectTV receiver. Always via the A/V's (no RF stuff here) using highest-quality interconnects.

Madness, I can't help but laugh now. Sony orriginally referred to the process of recording on Betamax as "Betamaxing". I can't believe the utter coincidence that you did that, so I'm guessing you subconsciously remembered that advertising campaign (Perhaps you were there for it, I wasn't, but I read about it.) and the phrase crossed the threshold to your conscious mind, and now you've started using it.

At any rate, I don't consider Beta to be a an ammusing novelty. Actually, IMNTBHO (In My Never-To-Be-Humble Opinion) the new TV recoding apparatus that lets you pause, rewind, record, and otherwise fiddle with live TV broadcasts is an "Ammusing novelty", yet to prove its acceptance or true utility.

erfies I agree with Sean about the Tivo being an amusing novelty, because I want my video stored in raw data, not compressed like it is with the DVR. Secondly, I'd rather Betamax the rental DVD for $4 instead of going out and spending $21 or so on a DVD. I don't care if DVD recorders replace VTRs in most people's homes, I'm going to stick with Beta until I can no longer get the machine repaired. At least the Beta is ignorant to any copy-prevent codes they may place in future broadcasts so the DVD-R doesn't record it.

Apart from going on eBay and getting another Beta VCR (even with all the dealersnails it's not all that expensive) you can look in the Yellow Pages for Video Duplication Services. There's usually a bunch of people in almost every city that can copy a Beta tape to VHS or DVD or VCD.

Hey Jesse, I've got one of those SLV-R5UCs that you posted an auction for. It really is a great deck, arguably the best consumer-level VHS-based VCR ever built. It's one helluva editor, and it does wonders when it comes to reducing generation loss. I can edit from my camcorder to the R5, then copy to another VHS deck, and it's the only VCR I have that can make a 3rd generation copy look good.

THE BETA REFFLECTION. 2003: **************25 years of betamax in Europe************* (26 in Japan and the USA)

I'd like you all to read this article I've written, exclusively for our chat.

In 1978 (approx.) the betamax format was introduced in Europe by Sony. Between 1978 and 1989 Sony sony released a very important range of outstanding electronics: VCRs, HiFi components, televisions, cameras... which may be nearly compared to its professional partners, both inside and outside ( SL-C9 pendulum drive, SL-HF 950 cassette loading and inside technology, PCM encoders,...), applied to consomer range and specifications. With the release of the first Sony VHS decks, the beta format died. Sony continued offering this type of consomer-proffessional deivces during 1990-1992-1993. By 1993 lots of "2nd range marks" appeared offering "working" new electronics for a quite low price and this obligated Sony to gradually lose its exclusive high range of electornics. Now, Sony is a high-volume consomer electronics mark. It has lost absolutely its "essence" of that high quality deivces. Now, when someone decides to buya a video, he doesn't matter if it offers better quality and durability: vcrs like the actual Sony (SLV SE850, well I don't know the exact model number) and Funays or Orions or First Line vcrs give the same results. And also the constant changing model range. Catalogs are valid for a maximum perdiod of 6 months. The European 950 or the american 1000 lasted between 2 and 4 years. I must also say that SOny and other high range companies are leaving analog systems as obsolete. In 1999 sony was selling 15 or 16 different models of vcrs. Actually it offers only 3 or 4. After all this facts I think that beta format would have the same luck. Actually it would be almost disappearing and with lots of bad qualitiy videos, or wiht excxessive prices by now, because of Sony expensive patents. The same thing has happened with all type of high end electronics and devices like classic Marantz HiFi components, for example. It is applicable to all kinds of products: when something is affected by a massive production-demand its quality goes down. I compare these products with proffesssional products because they still in non- massified production. And I give a final reflection to all betaphiles,... all people who are members of this club (the beta club, hehehe). Imagine VHS disappeared this way like betas, how would the betamax format be by now? Would there be a VHS chat-page??? It's a good theme for our chat to discuss it. People, tell all of us how (better or worse) would be beta by now!

Give your opinion!!!

Well, personally, I think that there'da been a Beta-C format (gleech!! :( ), and that the Betas today would have been all cheap and plastic-filled... $39 at Wal-Mart for a mono one, like I saw today for a VHS. Why are they still selling mono VCRs? I think that we wouldn't feel as unique or special as we do today, and we wouldn't appreciate it as much as we do. We also wouldn't appreciate great old decks like the 300 and so on, and lots more Betamies would prolly wind up at Goodwill unused and unwanted. I think that it was better this way, even though things are getting hard to find we should be proud we're part of this "elite," special group.

Yannow, that "soadv" guy on eBay must have a never-ending supply of HF2000's which he reserves somewhere around $ 800 ! I've seen him sell god knows how many of those over the passing months. IMO, if I wanted to blow $ 800 on a deck, I'd rather go for an HF1000, maybe an HF2100 or even an ED-Beta deck. But that's just me. :)

I agree, Madness, the HF-2000 isn't actively bad, it's just massively overpriced. I have no idea why, either. Even if it has a warranty, it's just not worth it... it's rediculous, unless you're just desperate to open a new, factory sealed Beta unit... MMmMmmMmmmmmm....

I've heard stories of old cars remaining under warranty because the warranty deed only had a mileage limit, not a time limit... some guy bought a used oldsmobile, I think, and it still had under 30, 000 miles, so the warranty, from back in the 50s, was still valid, except it wasn't transferrable... rats! Unfortunately, the warranty on VCRs is not workable like that... I think even the most extended warranty would have run out now...

I have a friend that has two very good Beta Machines and too many Beta Tapes. He would like to donate them to a Charity, Senior home or center, or some place where someone could enjoy them. Does anyone have a clue. Of course, he'd be willing to sell, and looking to send these to a worthy organization. Help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Here's a weird one: I just acquired a copy of the film "THX-1138"; the original release w/ a mono soundtrack. I popped it into an HF550, and the speed keep switching back & forth every 10 seconds or so between BI & BII! I could see the speed icon change on the display, the picture looking like its going in and out of "X2" mode, and the sound going from normal to "Chipmunks." Like the deck couldn't decide what speed to play it at. Couldn't quite figure that one out since "THX-1138" then played fine in a few of my other decks I tried, and no other tapes played on the 550 showed the speed problem.

How does the tape itself look? Is it 'scalloped' at all on the edges? Could maybe winding and rewinding it help?

Maybe the ACE head on that 550 is on the edge of going bad?

Hmmmm... I believe this will blow away the long-standing belief that no pre-recorded matter was released in ED Beta... Presumably these are also SuperBeta because ALL ED-Betas were SuperBeta. I know that I have seen pre-recoded S-VHS matter.

All ED machines can record / playback SuperBeta, but tapes recorded in ED format are not SuperBeta, therefore won't be playable in a regular SuperBeta.

I believe a small number of prerecorded ED tapes were released in Japan only (that one on eBay looks like an import). The other dude there is right; ED is totally different animal. 500 lines and metal tape vs. ~360 lines and oxide for Superbeta (BIs is, what, ~400?). And for all the "enchanced picture" variations of formats, I've only seen prerecorded demo tapes, here (Sß, S-VHS, Hi-8). I've acutally got a few, m'self.

LOL, I just noticed the address Madness put as the email.... :) :P NEway, I wanted to ask a question about my Betamie. I dragged it out from under the bed this morning and turned it on, but the flashing "C" light showed and it shut down with "T" flashing fast even though the battery was fully charged. I took out the battery and put it back in, and it worked fine for a while but, "C" again (steady). I played back the recordings it made while "C" was on, and they were fine. I know the heads are clean (only use B-cam oxides in it), so what could be causing this? Old age crankiness?

I'd clean the heads anyway, unless you did it recently, and then I'd check all the linkages in the casette-tab detection system. I suppose if push comes to shove you could disable the tab system and put a big label on the side saying that it will erase even record-inhibit tapes...

I've been given a Sanyo Betamax Recorder model VTC9455 and there is no information on this anywhere on the internet that I can find. It is a fairly large machine, gold colour top cover case with fake wood trim sides/front. Soft-touch buttons instead of 'piano' keys. It is multi-format as in PAL, SECAM and NTSC according to the front panel.

Unfortunately and as per the age of htese things it is non-functional tape wise, tuner/time works OK though.

So is this an previously unknown model or an equivilent to another? Any info appriciated.

_@_v - luckily the drive train on most sanyos was fairly consistant from model to model so if it's a mechanical problem you can probably just get a cheapo VTC-5000 or something like that off of e-bay and revive your unit with kibbles and bits from the 5000. there are also belt kits you can buy if it's just bad rubber keeping your unit down.

_@_v - if you have some ftp space or an online photo place why not take and upload piccys of the sanyo so we can all see it?

Jesse does 'C' mean discharged? Perhaps your betamie sips away at your fully-charged battery while you sleep. My GR-SZ9 (SVHS-C hifi) can drain a fully charged NP-66 in less than a week even though it is turned off. I bought two brand new ones before I figured this out. So now I can go to a concert with 3 hours worth of batteries and one 30 -min SVHS-C tape.

Hi all,

Sorry this is a V2000 question, I hope you can help :)

I picked up a Video200 machine yesterday complete with some tapes (and all for 50p) it’s a Grundig V1600 2x4

The machine is in great cosmetic condition, but seems to have a few faults.

When a tape is playing the sound is muffled and quiet with changes in pitch, is this just a simple clean of the audio head or something else?

The picture is a little grainy but not too bad, rewind and fast-forward is good.

I can’t seem to tune in any channels using the tuner, nothing is picked up on the uhf band, is this serious or a simple fix?

Also does anyone know the pinouts for the av din plug or better still a copy of the manual / service manual

Thanks

Bill

eeeeee! meanie fake post-er! Anyways, no Nnils, I always keep batty either in the charger (batty I tried had just come off of charger) or outside of Betamie. "C" i think either means head dirty or tube going bad. Oh well, I just chalked it up to old-age crankiness.. I wouldn't be too happy if I'd just spent 3 months in a stuffy case, either. yay, more Betamie-cam blanks!

mmmmm nummy blanks! I also duplicated an Ampex Betacam case label (only changed Betacam to Betamax, and tape number to Beta tape length) on the computer if anyone wants it (just tell me what length). I'm also working on a Sony one, if anyone's interested. I like to have the "pro" labels in the plastic insert, LOL... I posted an example, check the Betamax files (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/TheBetamaxVideographer/files/). Also, if anyone wants the Photoshop PSD source so they can play with it if they want, I can upload it there. Let me know!
