I recently purchased one lot of audio visual equipment. Among the lot is a Sony Vidimagic/Betamax Projector. The power does come on and the Betamax unit works mechanically. However, the lamp on the projector does not come on. I assume that it needs a new lamp but am not at all familiar with it's operation so do not know for sure. I do not have Beta tapes to test it with and, I suppose it is possible that the projector does not activate unless their is a tape in the machine. I just don't know. Any advice would be helpful. Also, any suggestions on where to find a new lamp (if that is the problem). If anyone is interested I am willing to sell the unit as-is. Best,Craig

To Stewart: I know for a fact that Sony doesn't make the NP-11 anymore. I was looking for NP-11's a few months ago and Sony told me they no longer make the NP-11, but I don't know about the NP-1. Try loking for a broken Betamovie with batteries that aren't so far run down that they aren't rechargeable anymore. I hope this helps!

Beta is a lot better than vhs - vhs is crap.

Beta was invented first but licences were chargeable, vhs were free hence more companies went that way even though its crap.

BTW vhs is the only thing that JVC has inflicted on the world and its crap!

In response to Stewert's question. Somebody in the Beta Informer (2 or 3 issues back ((98 thru 100)) mentions about "do it yourself" replacing of NP-11 batteries. He tells of the type of NiCads you would need. I am guessing you are from the UK, there should be similar places to get the type you need. The Informer's address is: http://www.chebutco.ns.ca/Recreation/EMA/Beta/Informer/ . To Richard B., no is is no such device to enable Beta to play in vhs machines. TTYL. Pepse.

Is there any way of getting separate Y/C output from a Sony SLHF950? I know that in the PRO mode the colour subcarrier is frequency shifted for processing, but presumably mixed back down to composite video for output, which seems to be somewhat self-defeating. There must be Y/C separation at some point, the question is whether it is accessible. Does anyone have any ideas?

I have in my posession a SANYO VTC 5000: M20&M30 vcr's ALL of them are in PERFECT working order and regularly maintained by myself i.e cleaning pinch roller, tape path, idler assembly e.t.c,and i'm very much self-taught,as well as getting enjoyment from it!My collection of films e.t.c on BETA has accumalated to about 450 and some of these i was given (due to Beta's demise) and are VERY RARE!I have to say that i also own a SANYO BMC 100P BETAMOVIE (with WORKING NP11 BATTERY!) which i bought secondhand or 'USED' and indeed it works VERY WELL in GOOD LIGHT.I must admit to having convert myself to VHS and i also own 2 " SANYO HI-FI NICAM 4 head machines and nearly 920 films e.t.c.I also own a SANYO 8mm camcorder which is excellent.I was VERY MUCH a BETA supporter in the early eighties and regularly voiced my opinion through 'WHAT VIDEO' et al ,and i was 'forced ' into VHS through a lack of pre-recorded material on BETA.However i have NO intention of selling these 3 stalwarts of the beta format as they have provided me with immense enjoyment and seem to go on forever in regards to reliability and 'head wear' although i beleive this to be down to SANYO'S unique BETACORD system .Basically the tape is un-laced VHS style during FF and REW and there is no undue stress placed on the heads or tape path!Although at the time this machine was NEW i unfortunatley missed out on purchasing a SANYO VTC M40 BETA hi-fi vcr,and as a lot of my pre-recorded beta films have a hi-fi soundtrack i would love to own one of these models ,and i'm willing to pay a good price for one that is servicable and in a decent condition with remote e.t.c.If any of you BETA supporters out there can help i would be more than appreciative and if there's any way i can help please don't hesitate to e-mail me .Thanks and happy viewing.

I've a SL-HF900(NTSC) and I've been having a problem with slow tonon-existent take-up when playing (or recording). During play, I cansee the reel motor getting bogged down and slowing to an eventualstop. The service tech told me that many of these particular modelssuffered from this and their only solution was to replace the entireassembly.

The situation with my particular unit is that the part number nolonger matches that version of the assembly. The tech was on thephone with his most trusted parts dealer and they concluded that atsome point in the production run, Sony made a variation in the partdimensions but kept the part number the same. Ergo, the tech wasunable to obtain the correct part. I now have the unit on thesurgical table, circuits boards splayed open, and the assemblyremoved.

I immediately do what I always do and that is to clean out the cathairs, dust, dried grease-gunk, et al. During my inspection, I findthat the pendulum idler assembly contains a gear with magneticproperties. What's the point of the magnet? The only thing I canthink of is that the gear has NO retaining clip and due to it'sorientation, it would actually fall off if not held in place bymagnetic attraction.

The reel motor spins about as freely as one's effort to twist offthe stem of an apple (a dubious analogy but the only thing I couldthink of). Is this excessively worn? Just how freely should thismotor spin? The magnetic gear on the pendulum idler assembly offersthe greatest resistance to force tranference. Normally it would spinquite freely if it were not for the 'normal' forces caused by themagnet. (Normal: scientific term relating to a vector perpendicularto a plane.)

Here's what I'm thinking: assuming nothing else is wrong with thereel assembly, then there may have been a change in the 'magneticfriction coefficient' of this gear which the reel motor cannotovercome. If this is the problem, would reducing the magnetic fluxbe a viable fix?

Any other advice is especially welcome!

I have a problem viewing new movies on my SL-HF2000 (the newest Sony).Since movies are only available on VHS, I am forced to transfer themto beta. I do this using an older model, an SL-340. I can't use the2000 because the picture gets darker and lighter throughout the movie(almost certainly due to some protection added by the maker). So Iget a nice picture using on the SL-340. But when I play the movieon the 2000, there is random horizontal distortion, kind of a zig-zagpattern, similar to what you might see on some of the older units whenwords or credits came on. It is as though the 2000 can't decode the message properly. This only happens on selected high profile first run movies. All other movies and all TV shows work just fine, no matter which recorder recorded them or which one they were played on. I've also tried various tapes and various speeds without any improvement. If you have any suggestions, contact me directly @ [email protected],

Had to happen in America, since it has been happening in the UK for years. Had a SL-HF 900 go knackered on me and was somewhat upset to learn that the part needed to reapir it (a control track head) is no longer available from Sony. Not a good thing as I have four other just like it that have similar wear on them and may need said part at some time soon. Half tempted to go out and buy a new VCR even though one does not have a good selction of one overpriced unit- and then leave it in the box until all the others wear out. Do have several 1000 tapes that need something to watch with.

Manufactures usually guarantee to supply spares for at least 7 years afterproduction of any particular model. And afterwards until stocks areexhausted. This is certainly what we've seen in Europe. Beta sparesavailable from Sony appear to be what's left. I see from Ray's site thatthe Sl-HF900 is a 1988 model so I guess it's no surprise that parts atr now running out. Woudl anybody else like to comment on particular spares forindividual models? In the UK we can get heads from Sony for the SL-C9 but not the DC-DC converter.

I've been looking for a sony PCM601 for quiet some time and have discovered??? that the digital encoding doesn't require a stereo machine.I wanted to use a slhf950 for audio along with pro-x tapes.would I get the same quality of audio using a hf100 ' does the quality of tape really matter?.Can a mono machine be just as good,if so what's the best pal machine.still require PCM601.

I have a Betamax video recorder model SL-T30ME, in mint, hardly used condition. I think that it was probably bought in Saudi Arabia as the instruction manual is in Arabic (starting at the 'back') and also in English, French and Spanish. I believe it has a tuner for a different version of PAL to the UK standard, as I can only pick up a couple of stations here in the UK and I either get a reasonable black and white picture with poor sound or a poor picture with good sound.

I also have two cameras of model type BMC-110, one PAL & one NTSC, with carry cases (one compact, one larger capacity), also in excellent condition. I have recorded tapes on each of these and tried playing them back on the above recorder but have similar problems as with picking up stations.

Does anyone know if it is possible to convert the recorder to pick up UK PAL? If so, how much would it cost?

I am open to offers if someone would like to purchase the recorder or the cameras or any of the following:AC power adapter (AC-M100UB) for the cameras, plus instruction manualsSeven battery packs (NP-11)One Filter Titler Kit (VF-100T) (unused)One external microphone shoe (SAD-100)(unused)Six unopened Sony L-750 tapesThree L-750 and one L-500 unopened Scotch L-750 tapes

Hi all, I just purchased a Sanyo VRC 500 camcorder. It needs some help. First, to mention, I thought I read somewhere that the Sanyo camcorders are actually Sonys, if that is true I am wondering if anybody has a Sanyo or Sony (probably BMC 550) parts unit? I am looking for the plastic parts that cover the Record/on-off switch and the "mike" area. Also does anybody have the owners book and/or the shop manual for said unit? I'm a little lost on using this one compared to my Sony BMC 110. And of course if the Sonys are the same then the BMC550? book should be the same. I also am selling my Sony BMC 110. It includes the charger/power supply, battery (weak), the original books, and stickers that haven't been put on yet. Also, the Sony box it came in as well as the box it all was shipped to me, in. Bought it off these fine pages early last fall. Have used it regularly since. Still works great. Want to sell it 'cause I now have a more modern unit; lighter, more compact, and has the Superbeta switch. US $75.00 (OBRO), includes shipping, unless you live outside North Amer., then we haggle shipping and such. OBRO could result in you paying shipping, depends. TTYL. Pepse.

Harry - if your message ([email protected], 22 July 1.31 am UK time) refers to my posting of 21 July, I would like to point out that all the items I mention are of Sony manufacture (with the exception of the 3M Scotch tapes).

Re PCM601 comments from G Parker, yes it is correct, you can use the pcm 601 etc with mono machines, the audio digital data is converted ,recorded and played back as a video signal, the audio to be recorded is fed into the 601 directly so the it does not matter if the Video recorder is mono or stereo. Of course, because of this you cannot record pictures at the same time, only digital audio.steve

Hello,

I have a Sony SL-HF300 that has a flaky Beta Hi Fi circuit.

When the tracking knob is turned all the way to the left, Beta Hi Fioutputs only on the right audio channel; the left channel is off. If the knob is set on the center position, there is only intermittentsound. Turned to the far right, both channels receive sound, but there is no Hi Fi quality on either Beta Hi Fi switch setting.

Is this something that can be repaired without resort to professionalservice talent and tools.

Thanks in advance to all who reply.

HI,

I am trying to repair a sony HFR60 (American) and I would be grateful for any advice. The power comes on and the buttons on the right 1/2of the console seem to work, but I get no response from play/ff/rewindand all of the "mode" buttons. Also the carriage motor will not engageto pull in the tape. I have a decent book on VCR repair but unfortunatelyit is only for VHS, and I am not sure what of the repair techniques carry over. From the troubleshooting guide in the book I would guess I either havea blown fuse, or the "tape lamp" is gone (Do Betas have a tape Lamp?).

I have another sony deck with the exact same problem, so perhaps it is a common weak spot with these units, and someone has dealt with it before.

any responses would be welcome.

I know this is outdated by a good 18 months, but its interesting, taken from the sony australia website:

Re: BetamaxQ1. Does Sony still sell Betamax products?A1. In the Japanese market, we are selling 2 models and will continue to sell in the future.

Q2. Will you tell me the sales amount of your Betamax products?A2. We cannot disclose it. (While the amount is small, it is being sold)

Q3. Will Sony plan to sell Betamax products in the future, or shift to VHS including D-VHS?A3. We will continue to sell Betamax products in the future.

I have approximately 500 beta format pre-recorded movies, many different genres, most were purchased new, and never rented. If anybody is interested, they may request an alphabetized list at my e-mail address. Prices are negotiable, depending on the number of titles you're wanting. I have extensive Clint Eastwood, Elvis, John Wayne collections. Some (but not many) of the titles are missing their original boxes, as I gave them to my brother who needed the display material for his VHS rental product, which he had bought used, and was missing their sleeves.

Hot damn! I'm stoked to learn of such a diehard dedication to betamax. VHS is subpar. Hail this cluster of sites dedicated to the healthy continuation of beta's existence into the new century! Per the Great Frank Zappa's musings, "it's a way of life". Lone live betamax, and the many betaheads that grace this world.

HI,

After 3 nights of intense labor I have managed to get my SL-HFR60 (American)to draw in the carriage, load/unload the tape, and to function mechanically in all modes. My only problem now is that the head drum won't spin. It trembles a little and starts to spin for a second or 2, but then stops again. I read through the repair information on this site and it offers that the problem might be caused by a bit of glue on the "Hall Effect Device" (what is this, btw?) and that I need to remove the rotor cover/shield from the bottom of the head motor to clean off this interfering substance.

I managed to get the locking nut off the rotor cover, but now I can't for the life of me remove this shield. It is surrounded by a metal lip so I can't get any purchase on it, and I am afraid to pry it up for fear of damaging the wire coils protruding below it.

Any tips? Am I missing something? How commom is this glue problem anyway?

I had a reel-reel deck which suffered a similar problem with its motor. The answer to that problem turned out to be a faulty capacitor. Could that be causing my beta trouble as well? If so how can I identify which capacitor may need replacing without a schematic, and w/o being able to "read" a circuit board?

If you have read this far, I deeply thank you.will

Andy,

Lost your e-mail address, but here is an update on my progress. I found the brown glue that causes problems and I gave the contactsa really thorough/obsessive cleaning, but still the head drum will only tremble.

I opened up the drum on my extra parts Beta ( HF300 ) and I removed the hall sensor and the coil assembly. Should I transplant them? Oris there something else I should try first.

thankswill

People are often asking about the last prerecorded titles available on beta. In terms of PAL beta (which died before NTSC) the newest I have ever seen is "Sleeping With The Enemy" which if I recall correctly is from 1992. The newest that I personally own are from 1990.

Calling HF950 experts. I have a problem with mono audio recording (i.e. nothing happens ).Whilst hifi audio is present mono isnt and nothing is recorded. On used tapes the original mono track can still be heard so it is not even erasing previous mono track. I have traced and checked cables from mono head to boards and they test o.k. I would also be grateful for info on nicam kit for this model. Please email me rather than reply on this site and I'll let you know of my progress. Thanks
