DVD compression? Huh? What am I missing here?
Oh, I get it. Set monitor to 256 colors and then view above links...
I can't set my video card for 256 colors.. but I see some VERY bad artifacting in those pics.
I got my Sanyo 7300 today, needs belts, of course.. I've seen someone post before where to get them.. could you post it again? Everything else on the machine seems to work fine.. strange combination of processor driven and manual 12 channel tuner in it, but it does a nice job. I can't tell whether it has BTSC(MTS) sound or not, but of course the machine itself is ßeta Hi-Fi.
Also have an SL-HF900 now.. I think I need to clean the tape path and head drum, but otherwise it seems to perform pretty well. Now I just need to get it supercharged.. :)
Thought I had gotten rid of them all, but in the process of moving all my stuff once again I have come across a top loading Beta deck (one of the Sanyo built ones from the mid 1980's) it may eb a SEARS one which last time I checked did work. If anyone wants it they can have it for a whoping $5 otherwise I may wind up binning it! It is located in Illinois so shipping will be extra or it can be picked up. Also found another SL HF750 which I thought was on what turned out to be permananet loan at an ex girlfriends although it just may be an extra no ittention of getting rid of it.
lmao @ Nnils, LOL!!! How funny, but accurate!
If that's how your DVD player renders colors, you should think about getting a decent one.
Well....
I took the 7300 apart this morning, to see what sort of belt and idler assembly it has.. it's not like any other Sanyo assembly. The GOOD news is, the belts and idler in it are in good condition, and it's only in need of a good lube and maybe a cleaning. I spun the idler manually for a few dozen rotations, and got it pretty much freed up. The loading ring tends to stick a bit at the beginning, but it too works. The machine performs pretty well for it's age. I'm playing old music tapes that I made on my 1000, and they play very well, and I don't see any sparklies in the black screen I used. I had a very strange problem the first time I tried to play the music tape, though. Although the Hi-Fi light was solid, and there was no background noise or real 'drop out', the volume level on the playback was going up and down. It's stopped doing that now, but I sure would like to know what caused it in the first place.. :| At least I don't have to replace the video heads, since NOBODY seems to have parts for this model...
As for the video, I watched about half of The Fisher King that I had dubbed off of VHS, and other than a few color dropouts (Macrovision artifacts), it looked very good. The thing definately will NOT play ß1 tapes, though... :)
Now all you neeed is an HVC camera and some NP-1 batteries and you can record in Beta HiFi live.
[==...]_@_¼¼[¥¥¥]={
That was going to be my next question.. this does look like an NP-1 battery compartment... now that I know that it is indeed an NP-1 that it uses, I can start looking for one. :) (or two). I bet with the tuner and all, it really eats those puppies up fast. Hour and 45 minutes now this music tape has been playing, and not a single dropout.. amazing.. someone must have loved and cared for this machine in the past. I'm sure glad I got the AC adaptor for it.

Brenda, some people "near" you take Sanyo quite seriously. To me, they're family.

New NTSC-PAL converter. Do these things work properly? Note adapter supplied is for 120v mains.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=3318&item=3034392057
"Perfect for travel overseas.Ê Allows user to play an NTSC VCR with a PAL TV or monitor.Ê Design of converter corrects for color difference of two systems.Ê Picture roll can be corrected by TV's built in vertical hold control. Ê Connect between video line out on VCR and video line in on TV or monitor. Ê Includes 120 V AC adaptor.Ê A/V dubbing cable required. Note: Not recommended for televisions without vertical hold control."
I think you'd have to have an old-style TV set with those 'twisty' dials to be able to make use of this. I don't know of any modern TVs with a vertical hold control.
So I'd give this thing a pass. It can only convert NTSC to PAL and not the other way around.
Brenda didn't your VCR-7300 come with a AC to DC power brick in the shape of an NP-1?
Franny,
Yes, it sure did. A VPA 72. I'm sure glad it did, too... but how to charge the NP-1's when I do get them. I am bidding on an NP-1 and a DC charger, hoping I get them for less than I paid for the 7300..
olive_e_thomas@yah¿¿.n¿spam.c¿m
_@_v - eeee! i've noticed a lot of those ntsc/pal converters showing up on e-bay lately. i wonder if some chinese factory is dumping a load of an ill-conceived poorly-selling product - where would anyone really need an ntsc/pal converter with only a 110v power brick anyway? especially a converter that can only work on televisions with a manual vertical hold control.
_@_v - yeep lousy product being dumped cheap...

_@_v - looks like ray glasser's betainfoguide site will be down for a spell...

Anybody know what happened to the Ray Glasser BETA site?

However, their snail-choking price list is still the same old, same old...

OK.. so, has anyone got a camera I can plug into my 7300?? Maybe someone has something they are willing to trade for a nice ßetamie 110??
I think I've got one, Brenda, but I don't need another Betamovie, and you already said you were going to trade tapes for the SLO-1400... you can always just wait until you have the cash, of course.
olive_e_thomas@yah¿¿.n¿spam.c¿m
_@_v - that 'betamax photo gallery' site is not, as far as i know, ray glasser's work.

_@_v - i saw this hvc-2200 up for grabs on e-bay. has about 4 hours to go on it but it's only 15 bux for starts. you'll need to get a stereo microphone and hook it to your VCR-7300's mic jacks to get stereo recording.
_@_v -or you can look for an hvc-2500 which does have a pair of mic inputs on the camera - usefull for shoe-mounting a stereo mic. the hvc 2500 has a lower lux rating than the hvc-2200 so it sees a little better in lower light - close to what betamovies can see.
awwwwwww, thats cute... Betamie sees better than the 2500, LOL. __@_**[oo]={ ==(* it's dark in here! (betamie with shoe-mounted flashlite)
eee! BTW what is that adaptor that comes with the 2200 cam? Is that the one that makes it able to connect ot the VeHoS portadecks?
I think that's an adapter to let you hook an HVC cam to the older Sony U-matic portables that were still being made then...
I have aanyo VTC 9300p and 20 750 polaroid tapes. Can anyone advise me if there is a market for these and if so what is a reasonable price? I am not an enthusiast and the machine has not been used in years but was working when I last checked it.
The first thing you should do with that Sanyo Beta is to at least hook it up and see if it's running. Then you'd be in a better position to put it on offer. Beta is still fairly desirable amongst true video connoisseurs.
http://search.ebay.co.uk/search/search.dll?query=Betamax&maxRecordsPerPage=100&category1=8345
E-bay UK's listing of Beta should give you an unbiased guide to what models like yours is going for these days...
You likely won't be putting your kid through University with that Beta but you should at least get enough for pizza and a rental movie. Or you could keep the beta and enjoy the movies you've already taped...
SL-HFT7@t_e_l_u_s.n_e_t
Brenda, does that VCR-7300 have a 10 or 14-pin camera plug or just video in? Also does it have separate mic inputs or just audio in? I love my Sony ECM-99 one-point stereo electret mic.
nnils:
It has line in/out and a 14 pin camera connector, plus stereo mic inputs and a 3.5mm plug for a wire remote. It also has a 12VDC input for a car adaptor. Pretty nice machine, I think it's the only one of it's kind sold in the US. I don't think the tuner has MTS sound, but it's interesting, and seems to be fairly sensitive. It says it's only for VHF/UHF over the air TV, but seems to tune in all the low/mid/high/super band CATV channels.
Latest Beta news: Made my first Beta related find since the SL-5200 at the antique store in April. Found 2 pre-recorded tapes at a local Goodwill. They are "Adventures In Babysitting" and "A Day In The Life Of Jimmy Reardon". :) Unfortunately my Sanyo 4030 has starting chewing tapes on a consistent basis (about once every 10 plays) :( I'll finally have to get off my duff and order new rubber bits for my Sanyos plus the 5200
fond memories for kids of the 80s...
http://www.80snostalgia.com/memories/betamax.html
I found about 20 ex-rental beta tapes at a local goodwill a few days back. Nothing special, really. But what did catch my attention was a demo laserdisc from 1994 for the new RCA digital small-dish DSS service. I bought it, but have no way to play it. I thought it was like finding a VHS demo tape- A presentation touting a cheaper, but inferior product that would replace the better, expensive product. Before my friend bought a DSS dish, his C-Band rendered beautiful video. Now, when watchingthe DSS, pixel "blocks" surround every slow-moving object.
Speaking of demo tapes, does anyone care to digitize any Beta demos (or even screenshots) for uploading to The Betamax Videographer? Just an idea. Thanks
olive_e_thomas@yah¿¿.n¿spam.c¿m
_@_v- eeee! not a bad idea! i have a copy of the sony beta hifi demo tape and could easily do a few screen caps and/or an MP3 of the audio. gimmie a couple days to get around to it...
I have a copy of the hifi demo tape; but wasn't there a superbeta demo, also? I'd love a clip of that one. Maybe a VCD image?
olive_e_thomas@yah¿¿.n¿spam.c¿m

Re: DVD artifacts. My $33US sChITIZEN JDVD380 can't even display the opening credits without defects, so I got a Lite-On CD burner/DVD player combo for my teen's K6-2/400mHz Asus computer. Big improvement but that cpu started to lock up after 20 mins when daytime thermometer hit + 30 C. Swapped in the pre-teen's K6-2/266 & cranked it to 300 mHz using same old fan to see how long it could take the hot room. It ran all afternoon despite almost 100% cpu load (playing a DVD through an old Virge DX/375 PCI video card). .
The important part is with such a slug system there should have been pixels the size of floor tiles but the included PowerDVD software is apparently designed to skip frames on the tough scenes (every scene with that setup). No mosaics, no big white streaks, just slight strobe or blurry motion. Dropping the frame rate to render them properly looks much better through my eyestalks than seeing each and every frame chopped to bits.
Lite-On with PowerDVD and Nero 5 http://www.ncix.com/usa/productdetail.php?sku=9794
Who knows what evil lurks in the heart of gastropods? Only the Snailshadow knows...
http://home.nycap.rr.com/frannylandde/kunstwerken/snailshadow.jpg
Perhaps the difference in visible artifacts on your different setups lies in the progressive nature of your PC display as opposed to your interlaced TV set ?? I don't know much about this though.
hi ppl
SL-HFT7@t_e_l_u_s_.net
Homer, dvd reproduction is affected by a number of bottlenecks which could leave the processor unable to keep up (cache size, processor or bus speed, scan rate, inefficient mpg decoder). What I found interesting was that during action scenes the PowerDVD software recognized an impossible task and made a decision to nicely reproduce every second or third frame and repeat it (dropping the subsequent frame) rather than trying to show every frame while butchering all of them because it could not maintain the data rate.
olive_e_thomas@yah¿¿.n¿spam.c¿m
_@_v - yikes! you might as well be using an old skip-field cartivision. i think they skipped three fields to make one or something like that...
I think it was a Sanyo format that only recorded one field of every frame... was it V-cord??
Cartrivision skipped two fields. Every field was played twice. There is some video floating around the 'net someplace of one in action... lemme see.....
http://www.angelfire.com/alt/cartrivision/movie2.html
Think about this... That movie was originally 24FPS. Then it was converted to 30FPS video master. Then it was skip-field compressed to 10FPS. That was played back on a TV at an inflated 30FPS which was recorded on a camcorded at a natural 30FPS, and then dumped to a computer as an MPEG file at who-the-hell-knows-how-manyFPS... Theory would say we have no video at this point, but we really have a passable picture! How about that!
Ugh! I hate Angelfire/Lycos and their compy-crashing pop-unders. Belsen is too good for their evil key-lot punchers!
http://www.angelfire.com/alt/cartrivision/movie_files/movie2.mpg
DL the file directly.
The guy who took this was pretty stupid in not outputting a direct feed to the computer and talking through it!
The pop-under/up ads rarely effect my system... unless system resources are REAL low (which means it's time to reboot). Strangely enough, IE's big problem, that of being an inextricable part of Windows Explorer, is also a pretty big advantage... "Ctrl-w" is a powerful command that can kill whatever window the focus is on, no matter what it's doing. This works much better than trying to close things from the task bar... I've never surfed the web from a Mac, but I dont' know how you'd close an advert without putting the focus on it.. if it can even be done...
Hey guys, new here and i have a question. I recently acquired a toshiba v-s443 and i am having trouble with it. Whenever i press play button the machine stars to engage but after a few seconds it would shut off. My forward & rewind are working perfectly. Any sugestions out there would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
Hey,did you see the old Beta gear in that movie Auto Focus?Must be the original beta outfit
olive_e_thomas@yah¿¿.n¿spam.c¿m
_@_v - command+w does the same job in macintosh if you're ready for it. otherwise just click on the left corner close window square that comes with all open windows.
_@_v -now if only there was an way of automatically blocking pesky shockwave/flash media formatted ads. i changed my setting so they're not supposed to open but they still keep coming. i hafta manualy control+click on them to bring up the menu that lets you stop play, rewind them and stop looping.
_@_v - i'm seriously considering pulling the shockwave/flash plugins off my browser.

[oo]={ - get it off me! get it off me!
Olive: Windows Task Bar lets you close ads without actually looking at them. I think I know what you're talking about with the shockwave ads, they have no seperate window, right? If you refresh/reload the page a couple times, they go away.
SuperBeta HiFi Demo tape...
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3035213594
What kind of program is there on such a demo tape ??
olive_e_thomas@yah¿¿.n¿spam.c¿m
On the HiFi Demo you get an little narrative intro with graphics and an image of what looks like an SL-5000 with HiFi (and not what the SL-5200 ened up looking like), a little video and sound - camera flying through various musical instruments to music. Then they roll various clips of movies and music videos. The lineup I have is (not necessarily in order)...
Apoclypse Now - Heuy raid on Vietcong base
Star Trek - The Wrath of Khan final blasting of Khan by Enterprise
Micheal Nesmith - Flying Down To Rio Video
John Williams & orchestra - Star Wars theme
Exercise video clip
Dragonslayer - clip of dragon vs slayer - last clip

Hello I just discovered that i still have a few old beta movies. Is therte still an interest in these? I dont really care to type up a list here and now, if no one at all wants them, but I will if anyone at all cares to ask me about them. I do have a few Woody allen films, and a copy of the Beatles Yellow Submarine...a couple Disney cartoon collections...this is what I recall off the top of my head. Email me if you have any interest at all, ok?Mike

Those are worth a little more if those are original pre-recorded copies and not dubs or off air recording. Beta movies sell fairly cheap though - which makes having a Beta VCR a good entertainment buy if you like movies from the 1970s and 1980s (and the classics from the ancient days of the 1960s to the 1920s and beyond) but doesn't make someone hoping to finance a holiday home with their beta stash very happy...

_@_v - that one. sorta looks like it came off the partridge family's tour bus....
Has anyone purchased a Beta vcr from e-bay that you could plug in and it woulg play and record as the seller said it would??The last three I have purchased have been lemons.Except for the really high priced one ,what model of sony or other brand would you think had the best chance of working?
sony.... That's been my experience (SL-2000amie..) And guess who's the proud new owner (well, maybe in a couple of years; but it IS ours!) of an 1999 american Eunos 800? :) :P
Nifty enough car, Jesse... now granted I'm not one for Asian made cars but the Eunos 800 did seem to be a nice enough vehicle... How do you pronounce "Eunos?"
At any rate The SL-10/20/25 etc. line are reliable but rather lackluster in features. They are very sturdy decks.
I didnt get the actual Eunos, it's a Millenia S lol. You pronounce it "you-nohs" I guess...
I see. Ever hear of a Merkur Scorpio, Jesse? you could get it with a 5-speed. Nowadays you cna't really get full-sized cars with a stick, all sticks are in low-end trucks and little cars that amount to coal scuttles on roller skates.
Moving right along, I believe the Aiwa camera that was the companion to the rarely seen Aiwa Beta porable is now up on Ebay... Hmmmm.....
Olive- That JVC machine you provided a picture of was my family's first VCR. It took decent recordings, which are still sharp, even today. It went through quite a bit, as it was stolen in 1987, then recovered 75 miles away in 1995. It is still in use, now by my grandparents.

_@_v - fleggies! looks like one of the cameras sanyo, sears and zenith often bundled with their portabetas...
Hey everybody.
This is my first post, but I must say that Ilove this site and I love Betamax.Ever since my dad bought our first machine, an F30, back in the day.I even remember a couple of years later, our house was burgled and they stole the machine. We then bought a Sharp VHS, but my dad could not stand the crap picture quality and sound, not to mention the lag time from press play to picture. We had that machine for about two weeks then he traded it in for a new sony F60. One of the coolest amchines to date.Anyway I have kinda kept the flame going and still have the old machine.A couple of years back I bought an SL-HF950 from a friend.Recently another friend of mine also sold me his Sl-HF950 (what are the chances of having two different freinds with the same machine----really beats me).I was thinking of selling one of the Sl-HF950 's, and have had several offers but I really want to find someone who is pretty mad about beta as I am.It truely is a great piece of work.I am considering trading it for another beta, like one of the Slo machines, dunno yet.I would really like to get into converting some old Beta material to a decent format like DVD, Divx and SVCD, and ahve already done some work.Mayebe someone here can share some tricks of the trade.Anyway, thats my into.....oh and LONG LIVE BETA.....in our dreams anyway.

olive_e_thomas@yah¿¿.n¿spam.c¿m
_@_v - as for converting old beta material to dvd or vcd, well even with dvd you do lose some of the video signal to generational loss in the process. i'm sure transfering to vcd will get you more 'artifacts' than king tut's tomb.
_@_v - just don't toss away the old beta tapes and vcr. you'll want them when the next 'great technology' comes out and you hafta transfer them all over again...
olive_e_thomas@yah¿¿.n¿spam.c¿m
_@_v - btw.. where's bobby from indonesia? he hasn't posted in a while. hope he's o.k. and stuff...
I have a sony SL HF100 Beta HiFI vcr (UK model) and the video heads are gone.Does anyone know of a source for them as i would like to get it fixed.Cheers!
Hey Tomas,
I know you're right about the 950. Great piece of work. Its just that I already ahve one and its pretty much just sitting here doing nothing.I dunno, seems like a waste.Just wish there were some secret Japanese society that kept releasing new stuff on beta or super beta.Just seems so sad to see sucha great format beat by such a crap system as VHS.
Very true. By a similar phenomenon, I one day got a second deck in the form of a SL-HFR70. It soon became the main deck as on the very next day, my 2700 almost caught on fire. So much damage that it couldn't be repaired.
I've got a betamax sl-c7e and i don't know how to work with it that's why I'm looking for a manual.Does anybody know where to find one.
anyone have a replacement AU-28 board from a u-mie? the 5600 I got has a bad board.
Guess you finally got a good unit. I'll send a message to VCRgary. He wanted $75 or $100 for a whole 5600 so I should be able to get a board for significantly less. I'd check my unit but it's completely the wrong generation.
I asked him but he keeps saying to "get with him later"...
He's looking for a junker for me now. He'll get back to me. No offense, Jesse, but since I've dealt with him before, let me handle this one. Anything else you need while I'm at it? You don't still have your old Top-loader deck, do you? I'm parting out my VO-2600 and may as well see that as much of it as possible goes to good homes. The basket is going to a fellow in Australia as it is...

Thanks sean... No :( the poor old VO-1600 is sitting in the garage without its head drum. The upper drum is being used as a coaster right now... I had tried to replace the heads on a VP-5020 I had but.. it GE'd and I just sold the darned thing. The 1600 is in pieces. :( That was my first u-mie, poor old thing. One or more boards are GE'd because the wired pause controller got shorted. Oh well.
Hmmm... I have a head drum but the VO-2600 probably doesn't have all the boards the 1600 needs...
Hmmm, in the legacy of the Sony HF300, the darn Pioneer VX-5 is also missing that flip-panel over the channel and clock controls!

Got a Sony "Video 45" tape at a flea market last weekend. It's the J. Geils band, a prog rock band from the early 80's. I thought I'd never heard of them before, but on the tape were some songs that I knew and liked, including, "Centerfold", "Love Stinks", and "Freeze Frame". Unfortunately, the supply reel of the cassette has split clean down the middle. It played fine, but I'd like to fix it before it falls apart. Is there a recommended way of fixing a cracked tape reel?P.S. Anybody else have any of Sony's Beta music video series "Video 45" and "Video EP"? I have the J. Geils band one, "The Beatles Live", and "Iron Maiden Live-Behind The Iron Curtain".
Best thing I can think of for a slipt reel is to spool all the tape off of it in the machine, dissasemble the shell, and replace the reel. Formats using a clear leader can be spliced at the leader, but with Beta, you're best to try and atach the leader to the new hub itself. Get a couple worthless tapes to practice on is what I'd do...
PDM magnetics, anyone? lol
Ampex, Repro, Kodak, Polaroid, BASF, Scotch or anything else Minnesota Mining & Mfg. All are very very bad... Although Ampex comes as a real surprise...

_@_v - can't get enough of cheesy 80's corporate jingles? uploaded this demonstration tape you either got with your general electric tape deck or they had it sitting in the machine at the store for when the salesman showed you how it worked or something...

_@_v - enjoy!
I have several tapes each from PD Magnetics, Scotch, Kodak, Polaroid, and BASF and get good results from all of them. The only consistently bad (all of the ones I own are bad) tapes I know of are Memorex. Muchias dropouts! The other brands it just depends on how worn out they are.
