Don't forgot the Ampex tapes. Mucho shedding (doing my video heads all that good!). I've respooled all the one's I've acquired from cannibalized VHS cassettes. Never had a problem w/ the Ampex (Quantegy?) Betacams, however.

Two questions..

1) What remote originally came with the SL-HF900??

2) Has anyone heard from Andy Sanchez lately??

To 'Nam' since this is a Beta chat page I don't think we really don't have much experience with VHS equipment like camcorders. Beta ones had reflex lenses and not electronic viewfinders. The best guess in the case of your machine is that the imaging system isn't working.

Brenda: SL-HF-900 orriginally came with a rather unispiring remote, the LAter models came with an RMT-143, which is obviously the one you want to seek out...

Andy seems to have fallen off the face of the earth again, but he does that periodically. I have tried getting in touch with him, but he just doesn't show... Oh well.

I have a similar Zenith camcorder, the only thing I can think of is to try the connection where the viewfinder cable goes to the body, it may be loose... My old GBC camera has a similar problem...

Hello to all,I hope one of you can help me. I picked up a Sony Betamovie BMC-100, but it did not include the power supply/cord. Does anyone have a power supply/cord they want to sell or trade? I would prefer 110 volt, but will be happy with whatever is available and then buy a power converter so I can play with the unit and see how/if it operates.

Any help would be great. Please email replies to the address listed. Thanks for your time,Tim

Zenith VR-4500 outfit with a camera for only USD $5.50

Guy says it has eject problems but I would think that's pretty fixable if the loading gear pulley hasn't cracked or the guide pins haven't wedged into something...

They can do that sometimes.

Hello allI´ve got a Sony SL-C30E Beta with a problem:I insert a tape.. It wraps around the drum fine.. Playback & record are fine.. Here comes the "funny" part.. Push eject and some gears is just spinning.. Making the Cassette Inside lamp go flashing like a christmas tree. It simply cant unwrap the tape.. Only if you push the guide a little near the full erase head. Then its unwraps the tape and ejects. Whats should i look for?

Best Regards

Does anyone know the derivation of the word "Betamax"? Thanks in advance.

Franny Wentzel
Sunday 20th July 2003

[email protected]

It's somewhat classically inspired. Beta referred to the Greek letter B 'beta' to symbolise the way the tape wrapped around the head drum. Sony also liked it because beta sounded a little like 'better' (the same way Sony was derived from the latin 'sonus' and also looked like 'sonny').

The -max was added for... well, maximum effect...

I am attempting to sell a veriety of older Sony video products. I have a CCD -F30 camcorder, an EV-C3 Video 8 cassette recorder, an SL-2001 cassette recorder, a TT-2000 tuner timer unit, a RM-E100V video editing controller, and a few HVC-2400 color video camera. Most are in perfect working order. Some need a little work. For example, the SL-2001 plays fine but will not eject the tape. I just don't have the time to fix them. Great units for those willing to fix. Email me at [email protected] to make offers or get more information.

Perhaps some connectionas are loose inside the monitor. Like maybe to the CRT gun itself. Since moving the monitor affects it I would suspect so. Another idea... Are there any bad magnetic influences around the monitor? Speakers, other CRTs, a poorly shielded cyclotron or linear accelerator maybe?

ConverGEnce is adjusted with mirrors in rear projection units, right? I can't find any articles on the internet that describe how it works. How would it be adjusted in a traditional CRT unit? VCRGary doesn't have the service manuals for uncommon units like the GCS-50, and he does more with VHS units like the BR-6400, which is both an easy unit to repair and also one of his specialties. He's not perfect and he doesn't have all the time in the world, the point I was trying to make was it's not a good showing when you give up on an easy unit like a 6400.

I guess AJD doesn't want to have his guys fix these units because it's not worth it. Betas are not worth anything to "normal" people. He'll probably get more by selling them as is instead of paying techs to fix them then sell them in working order. What more, he doesn't have to provide any sort of warranty.

Bobby,

You may have just put the yoke on too far (or not far enough). Yoke placement is critical, especially with inline tubes. They use rubber spacers between the yoke and the tube for placement, sometimes the yoke needs to be slightly farther from the bell of the tube on one side or top/bottom. Try moving the edges of the yoke (but don't move it around from side to side) while watching that mis-purity spot in a mirror.

Ran into a professional guy I hadn't seen for 2-3 years. He sold his TWO Panasonic AG-455 full-size SVHS-amies (if only...) and got into pro DV gear. Digital makes any recorded signal useful, so he had no idea his heads were getting marginal until recording a top-paying gig. Both DVcams crapped out during the show, and he didn't find out until playback. Cleaning did nothing. He tried three other playback units before trying one cheapo one that could recover any image at all (near perfect, being digital). Another reason to abandon our superior analog ways?

no... I hate digital and will only move it it if I'm forced to. The only thing that it's useful for is.. um..... well, I'll get back to you on that one. I prefer the analog, because digital compresses things and leaves artifacts everywhere. My Sony DCR-TRV25 miniDVamie doesn't do this, but i'd much rather have a u-mie dub than a digi-dub. I nearly threw the remote at the TV yesterday, because my uncle has that Slime Warner digital box that gives you like 300+ channels, and I swear it was so bad it was like watching a unRealPlayer webcast! :( Artifacts alll ovver the screeeeeen! Humm yeah... so analog doesn't compress the signal right ?!?!?

You can't see any artifacts with analog recordings because they don't have any sort of sharpness. But it sure doesn't show if you use a 20-inch or less TV.

Digital is the way of the future.

If digital is the wave of the future, kill me now, and be done with it. We have satellite television (there's nothing over-the-air that is worth watching, unless you are fluent in Korean)... and the artifacting is so bad that during screen transitions you would think you were looking at a mosaic... :( If it weren't the only choice, I would surely not be paying for it.. and will never pay the prices they get for any kind of digital cable/satellite back home.

I'm really picky about the DVD stuff I make on the computer, too.. if there are any visible artifacts in it, or if the sound is not in perfect sync, the disc goes straight into the trash..

C band satellites are mostly encrypted analog, with some open channels. They operate (in North America) between 3.7 and 4.2 GHz. Ku Band birds are mostly encrypted analog and digital. I believe they operate around 11 GHz. The pictures are far superior to any home digital garbage out there. Digital IS capable of looking better than the analog we have available to us at present over the air, but then analog is capable of so much better than what we are using as well. Bandwidth for bandwidth, analog is capable of better than uncompressed digital, because uncompressed digital needs much more bandwidth than analog for the same quality. Some compression schemes are better than others, and if simple compression is used, such as what is used for WinZip (similar) then you could have a picture with no loss, as long as the decompression codec works properly. Most people think that digital equates to high definition... this is not the case. Standard digital television, which is by far the great majority of what is being and will be transmitted by US TV stations, is very poor quality, much poorer than their analog signal. They are able to put up to 5 standard digital signals in the space of one analog channel bandwidth. They can put only one HDTV signal in the same space. VERY LITTLE HDTV IS BEING BROADCAST! And a bigger joke still is IBOC on the AM and FM radio bands. The AM IBOC (In Band On Channel) utterly destroys reception of any station up to four channels away from the IBOC signal.. and in many cases even interferes with the standard AM component of the station. IBOC on FM destroys reception up to five channels away!

As far as my folks complaining about me being picky?? They don't talk much lately. My mom's been gone since 1967, and my dad since 1998.

I agree with Brenda and Jesse, I'm also very picky. We have digital cable that is actually remarkably good considering what utter $#!^ seems to float around these days according to you guys. Only the occasional artifact and so on, although when you change stations it takes a second or two to catch up and the whole thing goes to hell in a basket. Very occasionally it will also do something like that in the middle of a program. The thing that really bugs me is that some time at night they put out some really awful signal for about ten seconds that's supposed to be some kind of test of some kind of warning system that's trying to be Conelrad or whatever... That's messed up more videotape recordings than digital artifacts.

As to VCRGary, yeah, he's better than most snails. He will not just blow you off when you ask for something and if you buy it and it doesn't work he'll help you. He knows what he's doing more so than lots of the dealers (Snaling shows such a lack of knowledge as to take descriptions verbatum from Ray Glasser's seemingly defunct infoguide) and wile his prices are still rather high, at least you're getting more than glitzy photography.

Speaking of VCRGary, Jesse, lemme see if he's found you an AU-28 board yet for your VO-5600.

febba! So my 1976 Trinitron with bunny ears is the only one who can get a pure, uncompressed analog signal nowadays? :( KENS went digital back in 1999, and their picture has only gotten better. I wonder why. It's extremely sharp and nice-looking, not like WOAI. You know how you can tell when something's been previously recorded on TV because it's not as sharp as "live?" Well, that's how WOAI looks, like it's been previously recorded. I wanna go back to analog, lol.... :( I wonder if anyone else has complained to the stations or something about how crappy their digital looks.

e_Eee!! Do you think if we produced a show using Trinamies we'd be able to get away with it? Haha! That'd be coool! To shoot a project for broadcast using tube cameras and edit with u-mies! Could a TV station get away with that? Or are tube cameras "below standard" now and can't be used. Is it also true that the FCC doesn't like for technical glitches to be broadast? I heard that somewhere.

I have in my collection a Sony SL-2000 and matching Sony TT-2000. If you want them drop me an email and make me an offer. I'll ship to Canada and the conental US only. (Alaska Included) You pay shipping which is done through the Postal Service Canada Post and USPS. The TT-2000 works, the SL-2000 is said to be working however there is no battery or Power Supply for the unit. The SL-2000 can be paired with a HVC-2400 Camera unit, I had one, but not anymore, it broke.

Uh... Olive, go look on the PALsite main page where there is a Diagram of the Changer port on the VCRs that had one. If none of the pins supplies Mains current, then they will probably interchange fine. I suspect that it uses some internal voltage supplied by the machine, unless it has a wall plug of its own.

Yeah, hard to believe Bob Hope was over a century old. Not bad, if I do say so myself.

Actually the AG7 is designed for the SL-C7 VCR. I think the AG-90 was usable for the T50.

You had to ask, didn't you? I'm sad to say that my friend Rich used to own one. He was an exceedingly accomplished tech but he could not fix it at all, it was almost impossible to fix. his web site is http://www.labguysworld.com/ get in touch with him through there, I will not give out his info but he MIGHT be able to help you, since I don't know the nature of your problem.

Hi all

I have a UK C9 for sale in London - recently had major carriage and DC convertor work done and an overhaul - still under guarantee from the Audio centre in Croydon. The repair bill was large! It still has original box, instruction manual and remote. All flaps and covers are in place. There are some scratches to the top but the front face looks fine. It was in my loft after the carriage packed up about 15 years ago - I got it re-furbished to transfer some tapes to DVD. So now it is surplus to my requirements and looking for a good home. With all the work that has been done I am sure that it will be good for a few years to come - you don't get many machines offered with a warranty still intact! I guess I need to re-coup some of my costs on this one so it will be expensive - email me if you are interested and make an offer.
