All the research showed that Sony's Betamax is better than VHS, Sony is a respectable company, and they spent a boatload of money advertising. So what happened? Betamax has to go down as one of the biggest flops in product introduction history, right up there with New Coke. "

Dammit! there ought to be a law against websites that try to mess with your preferences. Some website's pop-up ad froze my computer and destroyed my internet preferences files which means I have to go through my browsers and stuff.

I know the feeling. I've never had IE's preferences muddled (Another point for Microsoft, believe it or not) but some sites play some pretty lame tricks. While IE has some powerful commands, the thing I hate is that if an instance spawns another instance of an advert that gets corrupted, doing a break code (CTRL-ALT-DEL.... there's a break key left over from terminal days... why the finger=bender???) and killing the instance of the locked advert will also murder the instance that spawned it....

I am located in australia so can only deal with PAL format material

I offer the cheapest rates around, I will beat any written quote!

I have the same oppinion regarding Sony's advertising policy cause I've put my hands on a 1984 Sony brochure (I'll tyr to upload it in PDF -but it's in Spanish-) It's really amazing. Some terms like "the best television in the world" or "the best video in the world" can only be sad by those times, because Sony now is a mark like all the other ones, no difference can be found between a Sony Mini-DV camera and another JVC camera of the same format. Specs and prices are simmilar and Sony can't say by now they offer "the best [...] in the world"

Casimir

Dear Casimir,

I'm afraid I'd have to disagree with you regarding the above post. Two years ago, I bought a JVC MiniDV camcorder. It had terrible low-lux performance, and had no freeze-frame or slow motion. It only turned on properly 50% of the time, so I returned it and bought a Sony Digital8 instead, with all the JVC's missing features and more! It is still running well. (Of course, that's a D8 and not MiniDV...but it shows reliability.)

_@_v - i also saw an empty d.v.d. player box next to it (the brand was called 'classic' - as if) so it's a pretty good guess as to why it was kicked to the curb.

In my oppinion D8 is a better system, technicaly, than Mini-DV. And we must have in mind that D8 comes from a large 14-year evolution. M-DV comes from nothing.

I don't buy new JVC if I can help it. I'll buy used because it's actually good equipment... or was, most new stuff from any brand is crud. I don't buy JVC tape because it's stupid that they put "The Inventors of VHS" on it... I don't think Chevrolet markets cars as "Creators of the Citation" (Car, not the plane), nor does ford tout themselves as "Inventors of the Pinto"! Because GM is smart and ford, well at least they have some sense.

:( ..... That won't happen, everyone is satisfied with their horrible JVC globcams and their Tivos.... They won't want to buy Betas. I really, truly, cannot understand why people just accept the garbage they pass off as video equipment today!!! It's unfathomable to me why someone would put up with crappy picture or sound; I'd think they'd at least purchase the best they could afford (which is probably one reason everything sucks, LOL!).

It slays me how we now accept the crappiest images and tinniest sound in the latest TV news coverage thanks to those cheesy 'videophones' CNN dishes out to it's reporters inleu of a Betacam and satellite transciever.

Yeah... I agree. I find the level of garbage the average consumer puts up with to be offensive... Camcorder LCD screens are a pet peeve of mine, as are handhelf camcorders so the "Casual" videographer can make "easy" videos... If you're not serious enough to pack around a real camcorder on your shoulder, or a camera and VTR combo, then odds are the world doesn't want to see what you produce. Sorry. The video made by a handheld camera held 2' in front of you using the screen will induce motion sickness, so if the horrible subject matter doesn't make you vomit, the videography sure will!

Gimme a good old Betamovie any day... or better still a full-funtion portable deck that does it all... just a shame they never developed a SuperBeta HiFi portable deck! Closest thing was the ED-Cam... but that's a wild dream for most of us, sadly.

yeeeeeeeeee! I agree totally with Sean! That's exactly how I feel! ! I ! even have trouble (I is italicised) holding our DCR-TRV25 miniDVamie still. And that's with "steady"shot ON! I like the way Betamie moves with me, because it's on my shoulder, and not my hand. What's sad are the text-based superimposers that most 8amies, and even some VHS-Cs have. LOL!!!! Someone in our class made a video with a VHS-C and it had a lot of really bad insert and assemble edits. Of course, we didn't see the camera master, we saw a 3rd gen tape (most likely made an assembly off of the camera master, then dubbed that tape) on a projector, so you can guess how bad it really was. At the end it had 5-second "credits" made with that superimposer. I was like "Awww!" I feel all high n' mighty cuz I've got Adobe Premiere and my DVamie to make flawless edits and cool transitions, but at the same time I feel stupid because I have extremely basic knowledge with Premiere.

Sean Meskill

I've played around with Premier, it was discussed in a class I took last semsester. My final project was a brief educational video, so I did mine on Home Video and told people how to make steady shots by not using the damn screan and keeping the camera close! Well among other things. The Betamovies are a real nice balance, IMHO, insce they are light and don't break your shoulder or forearm, but they are still stable and move with you. I've always used shoulder-type cams and I frequently have people tell me how nice my stuff is when it's made with, say, my GCS-1.

I agree with Sean on the well-balancedness of the Betamie. Putting the battery in the handle was the bast place for it. Having the battery on the back makes a camera 'tail-heavy'. Also, Betamie's reflex finder is also great for being able to actually find something in a zoom.

Sean Meskill
Saturday 2nd August 2003

Yeah, the reflex finders are nice, but my GCS-1 has a CRT finder, but a sharp one, so it's no real problem. It had to, I think, to have macro mode. No auto-focus, however.

How are you feeding it audio? Do the level meters move with the incoming audio? The only thing I can think of is a tuner discrepancy with the country/area you're in now or the broadcast you're trying to recieve, and whatever it's designed for. Or perhaps a tuner failure. Will it work with line level audio?

Yeah, a good drain/charge cycle is important... more so for the NP-1 cells that are gell cells, but the NiCd NP-11 cells for the BMC cameras are very robust and only need an occasional cycle. Store them all full, and occasionally check them to keep them useful.

I got the same problem but mine is better though the sound not so loud, that's the common 'disease' in HF 950 (my friend has the same like yours).

Sean, Bobby, All

The 950 is connected via Line In for all (video and audio). It worked here several month without any problems. After some testing i found that in normal Beta Mode he record audio, butwith dropouts (same in Hifi and Linear) when playback. In SuperBeta he record no audio at all (no linear, no hifi). You have either nothing when tape was empty or whenit was used tape you can get the old normal audio when switching to it.

Ahhh... tested also the tuner first time i have the machine. same problems as described.

I have a Sony Super Beta hi-fi model SL-HF900.I had the head replaced recently by a Sony warrenty service center. Lately I was playing tapes that did not track correctly. I fast forwarded and rewound the taped a few times and this made the tracking better but not perfect. Since then the problem progressed to the tape playing a few seconds then stopping. Again I rewound taped and tried tapes that played well recently but the problem continued. Yesterday the machine began not accepting taped properly and when I dug them out the tape was pulled out of the folding cover and were crinkled. The machine does not accept tapes at all now. Are there any suggestions out there? Also, I am in Northern Ontario, Canada between Sudbury and Sault Ste. Marie. Does anyone know of any repair people near by? I have been having problems with Sony Canada fixing my VHS recorder so would rather use a private engineer who has knowledge in Beta machines.

Please help somebody!!! Has anybody apart from me come across the capstan wobble that Sony C5 s and C7 s have started to suffer with (it s a fast-ish wobble and is very consistant). I have given up on several of these machines due to this fault, and have been chasing it on my current machines for about six months now but without success. I know the motors are good, I have replaced the electrolytics, and the driver IC. Does anybody have any clues, as this seems to be a common fault on every C5 and C7 that I lay eyes on. There must be a component somewhere that is causing this. Any ideas welcome. Thankyou all

To Tony with the c6. Firstly, don t panic Mr Manwaring!! (Sorry!!) Anyway, back to the c6. Is there a tape inside the machine? If not then you could have a problem with the front loading mechanism. The voltage regulator seems to me to be working because you have the channel lights. I would check that the motor or the carraige hasn t seized. One thing I have noticed with the c6 is that if you have a good power supply and you switch on from standby, the head drum will twitch, and do about half a turn (it has on every machine I have ever worked on).

Let me know

Surprisingly enough, I am not a "creep," nor did I "steal" any data on Betamaxen. I undertook a long E-mail exchange with the original author about updating his page for standards compliance (valid HTML and stylesheets) and explained that his site could be an interesting test case of upgrading the coding without changing (that is, improving) the appearance. I put many hours into coding the test page, but have not promoted it online save for a message to the Webdesign-L mailing list. I did this so the original author could *take the code wholesale* and put it up on his site.

The advantages of standards-compliant Web sites are explained in my book _Building Accessible Websites_ http://joeclark.org/book/ and in Jeffrey Zeldman's _Designing with Web Standards_ http://zeldman.com/dwws/ . And see also http://Webstandards.org .

I only linked to the listings on my site because, at the time, if I recall correctly, the original page was down.

I don't promote the page as my own. I don't promote the page. It's just up on my site. And the original site is back in service, last time I looked.

You could have just asked, you know, instead of simply assuming, and calling me a creep.

One would assume that they are well-hidden or simply on the remote.

That buttonless ED Beta looks to be two stacked components. The bottom half is shorter and deeper in the back than the upper half is.

Bobby, have you seen that one on some arcane Jappi betapage?

Hi all,

I'm going crazy (even more than usual...<8^)) due to one of my SL-C9 behavior.

Symptoms:

- FF, REW, and PLAY stos after 2'5secs. approx. - Capstan motor runs at 3 to 4 times faster than it's supposed to do (while those 2'5secs.)- When in REC mode it doesn't stop, in fact it keeps running even when paused!

I've swapped the main servo board, control logic board, reel motor, capstan motor and power supply with a working unit (one with worn heads and somewhat sticky loading mechanism I use for rewinding and/or erasing purposes only), but symptoms remain the same.

Needless to say that ANY advice will be greatly appreciated.

Trying to keep Betamax alive, Diego.

e_3E!! yes.... I'm afraid Franny's right about the user manual. Too bad Mazda didn't make the eunie manual nice and pretty with lots of colour pitchers (like the Caddy one); ours is all cheap with little sketches and bad Times New Roman formatting. I wonder if the 2100 manual is like that (colour pictures). :(

Anyone out there interested either in buying my hardly-used Sony Betamax C9 Recorder or the 20 (only) tapes I recorded on it several years ago? The only fault on the C9 seems to be a need to adjust the playback tracking ..... otherwise it's as brilliant as ever and the remote control still works fine. My alternative would be to keep it and get it repaired (ie: adjusted) ...... presumably via this chat page? What a pity it's come to this ..... the Betamax tapes I have (mainly of terrestial BBC/ITV broadcasts) are so good that even a modern VHS would have trouble competing!I'm in the UK. Looking forward to any replies.

Hello JOE CLARK Possible creep,

You did a nice Canadian Fred Astaire, but as anyone who read your convoluted answer realizes, you did not say whether permission was granted. You either have something to hide or you think we are all idiots or you are a fool. I will make this VERY SIMPLE.. Did Ray Glasser give you the OK to copy a portion of his website .. YES or NO? If he gave you his blessing to copy and post it on your site it --Then all is OK --YES OR NO?

Anyone wanna bet he does another tap dance....WAH WAH Ray's site was down anyway WAH WAH It's up now WAH WAH So what? WAH WAH

YES or NO?????

C'mon off it tom, it's one thing to point out shill bidders and cheats and scam artists, but this kind of info-thievery is small time. Like I said before, just drop ray or whoever's info it is a line, and leave it at that. Then Ray could take whatever action he needs to.

To Bobby. To 'scoop' something is an old newspaper term meaning to get to something first or to be the only one to get it...

So keep those arcane Japanese Beta pages coming.

To Greg K....

You can do one of two things.

You can look on eBay for a Betamovie that still has the sticker set Sony provided, or look for some of the promotional stickers Sony gave out at the time.

Or you can buy some sticker paper and print your own Betamax stickers with whatever graphics programme you might have.

Or, you can ask me to create a high quality Photoshop PSD that looks exactly like the original, and have me send it to you so you can print it out with your own printer. Just tell me which Betamie sticker you want.

Insurance meanies! Looks like I won't be able to drive the eunie (for a while anyway) because the lowest 6-month premium I've been able to find is like $2.500! $300 a month, ugh! Even if I'm on my parents' plan it's an arm and a leg. Hey Sean, or other US posters, how much do you pay for auto insurance? I heard somewhere that TX has them the highest in the nation or something..... And to top it all off I think my NeeP-11 is GE-ing out. It only holds about 15 minutes worth of charge after 4-5 charge cycles. Probably needs more to bring it back up to strength.

Jeez Jesse... that's what you get for being a teenager.. (@)@)

Back when I was your age (late Cretaceus, I think it was) I paid $600 for six months, $1200 a year (for liability only).. and thought it was insanely high back then...

Now I pay somewhere around $300 a year for basic coverage (liability)
