Among the audio and video equipment I inheirited from my father is a Betamax SL-5000, S/N 810285. It looks okay but I can't guarantee how well it works. I have no use for it but I hate to trash it if somebody wants it, even if just for parts. I'll send it to anyone who's willing to pay the freight.

I don't think that was a New Yorker, I think it was a Chrysler LeBaron... differing quite a bit from the Imperial LeBarons that were boats of the first magnitude. At Umass Lowell we've got a few exotics, actually, at least two Merkurs, a Lotus, and some others... And 53,000 "CJ" Jeeps. I've taken to calling them the "Ubiquidous U-mass Lowell Jeepsters".

Awaiting an HVC-2400 camera I bought for it. Will include this in the sale price. Will also include two partially good NP-1 type batteries, between the two I'm sure there is one completely good one. $175 Roughly 100 NIB blank L-750's, all top brands, no junk. $3.00 each or $250 for the lot. Pre recorded ßeta movies/videos $4.00 each. List can be seen at http://fullspectrumradio.jadephoenix.org/forsale.htmUsed ßeta tapes, many one-pass. Well to add to all the "For sale" stuff here I may as well kick in the stuff I've got... I was previsouly going to sell some of it to Brenda, but it looks like that is no good... Brenda, if you still want it, let me know ASAP.

Here goes: RM-E100V in good working order, a little wear from use and perhaps needs the buttons cleaned, but it works with no issues. Offers over $25 +S&H

to email me take "Spamslammer" and one "dot" (.) out of the given email.SLO-1400 in good working order, I believe the "Pause" key needs repair but the actual video mechanism and transport are in exceptional shape considering it was a duplicator, which accounts for the physical roughness of the unit. $70 +S&H

MVC-2000 Mavicam in good working order. This is an IN BOX demo unit with the manual (Photocopy). It is a little worn from handling as it was a demo unit but it works just fine and comes with a bunch of disks and the cleaning disc and shoulder strap. Included also is the MVP-2500 still video player that lets you play the little discs it records. The whole setup, $ 200 +S&H.

BUT I'm not sure it powerful enough to run it properly... the edit cut is wonky and the Caution lights up when powered.. (only for a second) Am I doing anything wrong..?

Hi olive! We've got electricity in the Boston area. So Dollars to Donuts Madness has still got power (I just noticed he hasn't posted in a while... wonder why...). Anyway There is another Sony setup with the wrong tuner, it's an SL-2000, PCM -F1, AC-220, AC-700, and TT-2001, the tuner for my SL-2001. But the whole setup is a lot of money. But it would be nice to have both of the portables and a PCM -F1. The AC socket is on the Sony version of that tuner as well, and the switched AC socket on decks that had it was nice for people who didn't have remote cotrol TV sets and could then use the VCR's tuner to tune, if it had a full tuner.

Re: Sony Portable with Zenith Tuner. Vendor says "the only testing I've done is watched two old movies we had here on Beta & they played fine." That's no proof that the Zenith TT works when connected to the Sony. I bought an identical looking Zenith Tuner Timer without the matching video recorder unit (which was VHS!!!) and it was a whole day's work to get it to do anything. Unless certain lines were tricked into sensing +5v from the recorder connector, it could not even wake up. Impossible to solve without schematic diagrams. If this Sony is wired differently from a Zenith recorder they will not work together. Caveat Emptor.

hard to say but it looks like the output of the thing comes from the tuner (I know it has direct RF but that's it). It's possible there are compatibility issues but the tuner and recorder both power up. Caveat Emptor is general good sense on Ebay, though.

It is quite simple, I like to try to find a broken Beta VCR to repair and play with. This guy has outbid me numerous times, and for what I don't know. Maybe he shoves them up his ass for pleasure? I don't know. Its frustrating, these rare machines getting plucked up by speculators like this. That is what upsetted me and upsets me. For that, snaling should die. Clearly you haven't read this page much :) none of us like snaling. He buys up machines and has used the parts to turn out some of the oddest crud we've seen, VCRs put together with the wrong faceplate, etc, and he dresses them up real nice so that they LOOK new but if you track his buys (He uses the ID someko to sell) and sales, you can find out what POS was sold and what was parted out... Also, if some troll doesn't find that reasonable complaint worthy, he's engaged in shill bidding, which not only goes agains Ebay policy, is generally condemned by everybody!

One I forgot to add to the batch of ßeta stuff I have to sell, I still have an SL-HF450 in need of some repairs and somewhere around here is an 800ME that seems OK, except that it needs a new loading mechanism. Make an offer on either of these, and I'll ship them out Parcel Post to save you shipping costs. Remember, I'm open to reasonable offers vs. the basic prices I listed for the other stuff. Oh, also still have two nice ßetamies, an NEC and a Sony BMC-110, each has one good NP-11, and one that needs cells replaced. $ 30 each on those. Also, I've purchased a brand new, warranteed NP-1 clone for the Sanyo VCR-7300, and I'll ship that with it for an extra $20 above the asking price on that.

My 1989 Zenith tuner/timer had an RF out and line outs on back but any RF was via the interface cable from a module inside the (missing) portable recorder, so even after hacking to make the tuner wake up, only the line outs were functional. That interface pinout needs to be identical or forget it. In other words if that Zenith is a re-branded Sony it will work. Mine was all-Zenith inside, although the recorder transport must have been made by JVC (the inventors of Very Happy Shareholders). In the end it turned out to be a decent tuner but I was lucky to have sold it for half of what I paid.

When I was in Grade 12 electronics we got to tour the largest Niagara generating station. Somebody got in trouble for taking us inside a turbine housing which was down for maintenance - something about there being only one closed gate between us and a 280-foot (80 m) high column of water. To Bobby; The electrical system of the US and Canada is laid out so that power plants feed into a giant grid instead of one city or area. Ideally this means a surge in usage in one area can be spread out over a larger pool of energy sources. The problem is is that a failure somewhere within the grid can cascade throughout the whole system if the failsafes don't work properly. Which in this case they didn't.

The last big blackout in 1965 was traced to a single overloaded relay switch (which was not rated for the power is was managing) just outside of the Niagara Falls area in Canada. This switch (I think serving the Adam Beck Power plant) failed causing a chain reaction down the line of power plants. The power plants on the American side of the Niagara Falls were suddenly hit with Canada's electrical load and to protect themselves pulled themselves offline. City after city down the line blacked out as their power plants did likewise till the last power plant in NYC was put in the position of trying to feed the entire northest. It's operators foolishly tried to stay online and suffered damage as a result.

An episode of Quantum Leap had the big blackout being caused by some members of a Mafia crew plugging in a hairdryer into a Buffalo NY fraternity house which was lit up for a toga party with a cut to exasperated power plant operators...

I would doubt the squirrel theory at least in regards to the very high voltage trasmission lines as they spaced are too far apart for some despondent squirrel to bridge them in a bid to end it all and join up with the Great Squirrel in the Sky.

There is a case of a hapless fellow urinating off a bridge onto high tension wires running below and meeting his maker when the current traveled 'upstream'...

OK everybody, Check out The Betamax Videographer, in the photos section you will find a directory: "Brochures", in which I have the specs of several VCRs and the accessories page form a very nice brochure. If you look at the largest pictures, you can read all the text easily. The brochure also had in it some general Beta HiFi data and such, as well as smaller blurbs on the Betamovies, some cameras, and so on, but the salesman doodled on it and wrote out prices, so I took the choice data. If anyone has any brochures or such, why not put them in that directory? I have another brochure but it's not a scanable size, it folds out like a road map...

Hey, I not only remember the Nov 09 1965 blackout, I was in Niagara Falls Canada when it happened. We heard on the 6:00 news that large portions of New York and Ontario were down. Most Buffalo & Toronto tv stations were already dead or on emerGEncy power. Yet it was another hour before we went dark. We never believed the official reports blaming "the failure of an Ontario Hydro control breaker about the size of a breadbox at Niagara Falls" (Sir Adam Beck GEnerating Station #2 was the one we toured too thoroughly during grade 12).

In about 1978 I met a retired employee of Consolidated Edison who claimed to have worked with the guy in Connecticut who yanked their thermal generators offline just in time ("Hey Homer - how come all these dials are heading into the red?"). Apparently they were able to supply the juice necessary to restart Con Ed (strictly speaking all those generators are alternators and cannot produce a thing unless their field coils are already powered.)

Hmmm.. never thought of that but it makes sense, alternators are more efficeint than generators (hence why we use them in cars even though cars use DC, it's better to make AC and make it into DC than it is to make DC). Kinda reminds me of jet engines that need a kick start of some kind (my dad is ex-Air Force; he talk of old fighters that started using blank shotgun shells to get the engine going).

Mad Beta Fuseblower: Verify that the new fuses were actually T-rated (time delay vs. fast blow). 315mA is a common value for fuses, although I have no idea why they picked that odd number. If T315 blows repeatedly there is a major short and re-blowing will take down other related parts.

There was a major Aussie electronics supplier who advertised pre-blown light bulbs and fuses as "energy savers"... their catalog had a gag item on almost every page. Can't remember their name. By now they prolly have a great website.

hmm they are T rated.. well they have been in a shed for 2 years.. perhaps that might have damaged their performance.. (the fuses not the F1 -ub) I cannot understand how there can be a short.. they were just sitting on the shelf happily counting the clock.. I just noticed one day that the display wasn't showing.. but the machine works.. even the remote (but the channels don't seem to work.. even though the channel no. is not displayed)Should i go to maplins and get a new fuse.. or strip it apart look for anything that might short it?

After four fuses you might want to look for another problem.

Brenda-

Didn't you have a remote for an SL-HF1000 at one time? I don't need (notice I said NEED, not WANT) any additional machines, but I do need a remote for my 1000...

Oddly enough I can answer that... I know she had one because I sold it to her. Odds are, however, that she sold it with the 1000. However, she did I think have a second dud remote that was only partially functional. So it would pay to ask her, which you already have, so this post is pointless. But I will say that Franny's and Olive's above posts are very funny.

Sorry, but there is no such thing. It's a physical impossibililty on all sorts of levels. Your only option is to use a real beta recorder. But if you can get a good one, why copy? just use them like that. Beta tapes are better than VHS, unless you have S-VHS, and even then if you copy you'll lose a generation.

Sorry, oldtimer. The Beta-to-VHS adapter is a myth. We need a webpage that shows why.

Well, well, well. Here we go again. Doing a little eBay a'flipping and a'gouging is bad behavior for others, but not for the self-appointed nazis of the hobby, is it?

$240?

Oh, that's right; "they don't have to pay it if they don't like the price," a protestation deemed herein to be irrelevant in the defense of anyone else, is self-conferred specially upon you alone for use by yourselves, the self-chosen ones.
