I'd just test Half past Dead into HF95D resulting pure picture in BI, clear pixelate in BII, and the same to VHS quality in BIII.Recorded and played on other machine may slightly differ also unknown to rookie. Certain low end Digital Beta produced shifting motion pic.

What would be really cool would be to find material actually released to the consumer on 3/4" tape. That system was marketed to the consumer, if you recall. Would be neat to find such items, but I think they were rare.

_@_v - betamax post-mortem from 1988...

http://www.betainfoguide.com/RiseandFall.htm

_@_v - sony pretty much kept shooting themselves in the foot in regards to beta. like refusing to offer a remote pause even though r.c.a. had them on their vhs machines because "consumers would just wear out the videoheads".

_@_v - i personally love how sony clamped onto the notion of only 14 lousy stinkin' presets on their tuners (like on my 1988 sl-hf 360) well into the1990's (with the sls-600) even though they had a working 125 channel tuner years earlier (like the sl-2710). It really would've killed them to put a decent all-electronic tuner in all their v.c.r.s.

_@_v - it's like they failed to learn the lesson of communism and tried to manipulate sales through "managed" shortages and feature leave-offs. well it looks like the consumers went and left in droves...

Sony is FAMOUS for feature leave-offs. my VO-2600 Umatic has the contacts for a skew pot but no actual pot is in place! That was on the higher level machines...

A consistant operations layout would've been nice as well. The SL-F1 and SL-C9 are pretty much the same VCR but the swing-search feature works diametically opposite of each other. In the F-1 you have to go into pause to frame or motion search and in the C-9 you have to hit a different button. And a BACK button in the timer comes in handy for if you goof and need to go back.

And Sony execs still wonder why nobody cares one way or another about Sony Products...

I think "The Cleavers" were selling a GCS-50 with an opening bid equivilent to VCRGary's Buy It Now price... rather silly considering that while The Cleavers' unit was checked out by some random tech they hired, VCRGary checked it out himself, and could render some aid if you needed it. On old Beta machines (or any electronic device) decorated with a wood-like laminate, there is always a prominent label alerting the user that the wood grain is simulated. Was it illegal to pass off wood-grain stickers as real wood?

GEe... Well, I didn't really pay attention to the model number of the zenith-amie, (didn't see any markings) I just clamped onto it because it looked like a 2000amie right before some other slug snapped at it. That same slug probably sleeched off with it when I put it back and I'll more than likely see it for $250 at one of the flea markets because it's a "verrie verrie gut betamacks vee see are, seeee senorrr es bueno, es un ZENITH! ZENITH es un gooood brand... pero we dont have los caaaables..." LOL! Maybe if it had been a porta-U I woulda bought it, and if it didn't work sell it on ebay "as is due to age." lol!!

degga! Sorry so many posts but dont you just hate it when like at a flea market or something you think someone's price is too high and you tell them; and then they ask "whats it worth to you then" or "what you willing to pay"? I'm almost afraid to tell the people what I'd really pay for their stuff, lol, because frankly they always want 5 or 6 times what I'd be willing to pay.

That's Ok. You and only like 2 or 3 more people post on this board anymore these days. I miss the old days of the chat page, before George Bush killed the economy. People would chat and post about things, and sell things worth the damn and not gripe about prices that these rare items deserve. I do agree, a flea market is just a junk sale and should be priced accordingly.. but oh well. I give up. Digital is here , and we might as well face it. Digital compression is awesome. Nothing beats pixelation. Great stuff. Leonard.

The Dot.com meltdown that put the economy on the skids was already underway well before George W. had even taken the oath of office. In addition to having to deal with 9/11, there was also a major meltdown of the Asian economy that was beginning to take it's effects in the US.

Besides that, the president of the US doesn't 'control' the economy. The Federal Reserve does by raising or lowering interest rates.

Ya know what? I decided to hell with it, and pulled that unit from auction. I may even bid on the other one up for auction. The 900 went for $202.. wheeee.. pretty sure I paid more than that for it. Oh well, life is like that sometimes.

And Fiorello.. there's a hella difference between buying something for $175 and trying to sell it for $250 and buying it for $50 and trying to sell it for $600.. I don't have a gripe at all about someone trying to make a profit from what they buy and spend their time repairing and cleaning up.. but I have yet to make any profit on anything I have ever sold on ebay, and generally lose money. IIRC, my 1000 sold for $550. I paid over $1700 for it new, and had $450 worth of repairs done on it recently. Again, life is like that sometimes. When you sell (or buy) something on ebay, it's a gamble, pure and simple.

No, Oyl, it's not me. I have never addressed you specifically before your delightful "choke on it" sentiment earlier today, and that post is just above this one, under the name I always use here.

But I understand how you would like to think that it's just one wicked bad person taking shots at you. Fact is that you piss off a lot of people; that's why you spend so much time in this otherwise nonconfrontational setting - you rarely have to account for your behavior. I suspect that my calling you to task has inspired someone else here to sabotage your moniker to vent some feelings they don't want to vent under the name they regularly use. Hell - I could be one of them myself.

That's just it - other Toshiba remotes don't work with this unit - even Toshiba Beta remotes. Nor do universals have a code for it. Further, even if either of those could work, they likely wouldn't be able to control the 2 times play speed, slow tracking, vari-speed cue/review and slo-motion, features accessible *only* from the remote, nor audio dub. An owner of this one without a remote is screwed, far worse than with a remoteless digital Sony deck, where you could at least access the digital features on the unit itself, and use other remotes for many of the other functions. The owner's first clue, if he doesn't see it in the auction photo, is the 2x play indicator light on the panel, which without the remote he will find he cannot invoke.

And if you read what I wrote carefully, you will have learned about an eBay scammer none of the rest of you picked up on, and gotten a 101 course on one of the best if little known beta units you can own. Hi,

After one year, announced Sony, two models Betamax will soon cease.

One minute of the silence.

Here, this site version language english:http://babelfish.altavista.com/babelfish/urltrurl?lp=ja_en&url=http://homepage1.nifty.com/Sony/BetaKnowHow/FinalBeta.html

Also one vcr rare and prototype ED-Beta EDV-10000!

Yesterday, today and tomorrow, Beta is deathless forever. I already found silicon rubber and craft resin for project and to repair.

Bye

Sergio...

It seems the coding of this page is such that those last two links get broken in half so that you can only get the Japanese version and not the translation.

Ok, Fiorello Marshmello. You win. You are the most intelligent person on the earth. You obviously know something that the rest of us does not. Now, let me finish my lobotomy and then I'll throw some more Betamax VCR's into the firepit I got going in the backyard here behind my trailer. Gonna be a great day today. Leonard.

Re: Sony feature leave-offs. They are still doing it today. My CCD-TRV87 Hi8 camcorder comes with a remote control that can operate one forward slow motion mode. They neglect to mention in the manual that the camcorder is capable of variable-speed slow motion playback in forward and reverse if you have a remote that has the buttons for them-say the one that comes with the DCR-TRV230 Digital 8 camera, or the SLV-R5UC's jog/shuttle remote.

_@_v - somebody visited ray glasser's site before posting his auction...

"In perfect mint condition, this originally sold for $850, two years ago. This quality Beta unit has an image which is vast superior to the VHS units. Original box with everything in it. The last American Betamax model made. Stripped-down version of the SL-HF2100, with none of the frills; 2 heads, a standard remote control, no B-Is record, normal buttons, etc. JAPANESE EQUIVALENT: SL-HF200D. "

_@_v - all things considered, i wonder if the 'beta is better' than vhs' thing is overplayed - something that the know-nothings parrot when they have a beta to unload and they can't think of anything else to say...

This board probably should be monitored more closely, Franny, but you clearly aren't the one to do it. You don't seem to be very popular, and you couldn't handle the role responsibly anyway. It would be the fox guarding the henhouse. I think that a regular mod would keep things on-topic, so the childish snail crap of you and others here would be deleted at the outset. Now, because for you and Olive (and a coupla others), your obsessive, lingering "snail" culture is the bulk of your material, you consequently wouldn't have much to "contribute" anymore. And ironically, that would ultimately result in the elimination of any need to monitor the board at all. In any event, you might want to be careful what you wish for.

You all never seemed to grasp that it was that little schoolyard "snail" frenzy that drew in the initial wave of "trolls" that got this board shut down a year or so back, chased away a lot of longtime, quality contributors, and still draws the "trolls" to this day. If you behaved like adults and communicated like adults, it seems to me that the problem of the crude posts under your spoofed name would become irrelevant if they didn't disappear altogether.

For anyone who is interested, here is a link to a Japanese website regarding an enterprising hobbyist who casts his own parts, gears and stuff.

Re: behaviour modification. Why is it necessary to get so delaminated about the rantings of others (as long as they aren't ranting under another person's username)? I do not demand total agreement with my God-given insights. Please don't resort to sledgehammer posting when I disagree with yours. Just let it go.

For the record I dislike Beta-snails because after the same heavy VCR ends up getting dragged back and forth across a continent a few times, it has to sell for an obscene price just to cover the westbound UPS guy and the eastbound Fed-Ex team, then airmail and customs duties to get it to Toronto (hey didn't that $275 SL-HFR30 start out in Montreal for $50??) Final score: 3 couriers split $150, and 2 snails think they can retire on their share of the $75 "profit". The math works a lot better when you snail a rare 50 gram comic book instead.

Now don't post any disagreements or I'll have to turn into a sociopath.

_@_v -by the way sergio, 'magnasonic' was one of sanyo's trade names for it's betacord v.c.r.s it sold in canada. sanyo also sold betas under the fisher name in the european market. sanyo also oem'd betas for sears roebuck, marantz (for one beta), palladium, 'rent-a-beta' and radio shack.

_@_v - there were several limited run subbrands of beta oem's including bush, general, lloyds, navco (makers of a beta-format time-lapse security video vcr recorder), universum (they oem'd from sanyo sony & toshiba!) and wega (who even had a tape changer in their accessories options!).
