_@_v - in bona-fide beta news my second sl-2000-amie outfit finally arrived. It's scruffier than the one i have but it's more or less mechanically sound so i'm making it my main unit.
_@_v - hadda resolder a few joints in the multi-connector port which had cracked with age and i hadda re-align one of the little pop-up tape guide posts which wasn't seating right but it seems to be running and it's tracking better than my old 2000-amie...
but now i have twins! ...and twins are always cute! - _@_v [==|::::][==|::::]
accourse twins are cute.... if they look like PY that is ;) lol. Well, I'm angry right now because I forGEot to reconnect the video IN to my 300, and I MISSED AMC TODAY! I'm soo angry!! I'm always making mistakes like that!
P.S. You guys had better behave!!! You trolls PLEASE stop that nonsense! I don't want this page shut down again because of you meanies! :(
I encourage the removal of this "chat" page.
i came across a mint condition SONY Super Beta HiFi VCR....model # SL - HF 870 D
everything works great.
How can I find out how much this is worth? Can anyone help? Thanks!
ed
It worht 800 -1000 U$
SL-HFT7@t_e_l_u_s_.net
SL-HF870D worth $ 800 + only if in top shape (low hours, heads tested, recently cleaned by Sony trained tech, remote & manual, etc). If in "good working condition" but unknown history take off 30 -50% depending upon scratches or missing items. Go lower if obvious heavy use or white lines in picture, etc. That model is considered a premium model because it was the top digital effects North American Beta.
Hi,
I read this Snailie's chat, 'magnasonic' was one of sanyo's trade names for it's betacord v.c.r.s it sold in canada. sanyo also sold betas under the fisher name in the european market. sanyo also oem'd betas for sears roebuck, marantz (for one beta), palladium, 'rent-a-beta' and radio shack.
There were several limited run subbrands of beta oem's including bush, general, lloyds, navco (makers of a beta-format time-lapse security video vcr recorder), universum (they oem'd from sanyo sony & toshiba!) and wega (who even had a tape changer in their accessories options!).
I already knew:
Sony Betamax (trade names Japan, USA and Europe)- Zenith USA (Beta VCR)- Wega Europe (Beta System)- Aiwa Japan, USA and Europe- Pioneer USA and Japan (Hi-Vista)
Sanyo Betacord (trade names USA and Europe) Sanyo Miconic (trade name Japan)- Sears USA (Betavision)- Magnasonic Canada (Betacord)- Fisher Europe (Betacord)- Tensai Europe (Betacord)- Marantz USA (one model VR -200 with Dolby NR)- Radio Shack USA- Europhon (UK & Italy) and Brionvega Italy, but rare.
Toshiba BetaVideo and Betacord (trade names USA and Europe) Toshiba ViewStar (Japan)- General USA and Canada- Bush UK- Lloyds USA
NEC Betavision (USA and Europe) NEC Vistack (Japan)- perhars 'Renta-Beta' (portable player) similar OEM'd from Sanyo
Universum and Palladium are market Europe only (diffuse UK, France, Deutschland and Benelux instead of Italy and Spain less) also Video 2000 system that they OEM'd from Grundig and Philips!
Thank you for vcr time-lapse NAVCO, now I'm seeking pictures NAVCO.
Bye
_@_v - eeee! you hardly ever see n.e.c beta vcrs go on offer and you almost never see pal format ones....

_@_v - p.v.c. 740e toploader, at 16£ GBP ($25 USD). only 8 channel presets which i imagine in great britain in the early 80s was still overkill. for over-air stations it probably still is...
Hi,
Ooops
Also Realistic is clone from Sanyo OEM.

Hi,

Hi,
Thank you for Franny.
This vcr time-lapse Navco model 2500 black is similar Sanyo and NEC (OEM), but it's different nice display LCD (light green!) and button.
The vcr Beta time-lapse modern seem videoplayer DVD!My trial of the vcr Beta NAVCO model 2500 is very excellent!
I find the site official NAVCO: vcr S-VHS time lapse and digital Hard Disk are worse quality/function than Beta time-lapse!

Re: SL-HF870d pricing. Sorry, I posted before the dentist's drugs wore off. Forgot the currency conversion. $ 800 Canadian if minty clean, tested, still in the box, and buyers are standing in line with cut-rate Canadian cash. Take off 30 % just for being an American (that is being from a country that still has a currency with decent buying power). Drop price from there if less than showroom perfect. The (lack of) market will decide.
I was Offering SL HF 1000 D for only 1000 bux ,if ya got 800 $ for HF 860 D is quite reasonable.
EDV 7500 with woodsides almost 2000 bux, I will swallow if ya sell 860D for 800 bux.
here's for comparison
http://www.eis.net/lib/start.cgi/absolute/pricing.html
If I'm not mistaken Hf 870D is somewhat similar to his Japanese version SL HF 95D, with SWCTOOya can get SL HF 3000 (410.8 US$)but ya must go to Japan.Well prices may vary to specific condito.
At Canada Airport one of my aunties has knocked the camera case off the trolley (BMC-100p) and dropped 1/2 a metre : I check the lens it seems fine.. not had a chance to power it up (bit afraid if it is broken) There isn't any rattling.. so how would I know if it behaving ok without playing it back? or do I just try and touch wood it is ok until I get home?Just wondering what normally happens if the tube get cracked..?Cheers

You'd likely hear shards of glass rattling around if the tube had broken.
Cheers.. then I hope it has a minor problem if there is something damaged by the fall (fingers crossed there isn't):)

_@_v - eeee! had to do some surgery on my new 2000-amie to fix a loose loading ring guide pin that wasn't seating properly. surgery successfull thanx to strategic use of a dab of clear nail polish.
_@_v - those teeny li'l screws that mount those spring up pins are murder as well as this stupid little plate sony had the infinite wisdom to stick under them. that's where the dab of nail polish came in. used it to attach the plate to the bottom of that assembly.
_@_v - took the old guide pin assembly and used another dab of polish to fix the guide pin in place and put it in the parts beta I took the new assembly from so that it can still function - as a playback VCR at least. did the same trick with the polish to put that tiny plate thingie it had as well...

Rent-a-Beta Model RB-100. Apparently a Toshiba clone.
As Debbie Harry would say, "You look good in blue..."
[email protected]'tlikespamortrolls.uk.co
I think it was mentioned here that the suffixes on PAL Betas were region codes for their intended destination due to minor variances within the various country's broadcast standards. IIRC ES stood for Europe Scandanavia.
Hi,
I see nice photos Rent-A-Beta (Toshiba clone).I'm very satisfied and I like that Rent-A-Beta because two speed recording, microphone, RCA A/V connector and very strong water-proof (no under water, danger!) He can to use processor Toshiba PCM optional!
I have about 3000 videocassettes for collection: Beta, VHS (S-VHS, VHS-C and S-VHS-C), Video 2000, 8mm (Hi-8 and Digital8) and Betacam (normal Oxide and SP).
Among little, I shall purchase new 2 camcorders PAL digital: Canon MiniDV MV-X2i and Sony MicroMV DCR-IP220.Also among 2 or 3 year vcr 2 professional used (second-hand): Betacam SP UVW-1400 or Betacam SX DNW-A75P (with analog video player) and Panasonic/JVC MII (difficult to find) in shop centre professional audio/video Sesto S. G. (Milan-Italy).

in regards to the C9 labeling standards, the C9E is a standard European, the C9ES is standard european with stereo tuner.
mated with an appropriate digital PCM encoder, any of the C9 's can record digital audio at the expense of the video channel.
I have seen C9E /ES/AS/UB/CH/CK/ME and I am sure there is more variants.
The Australian model came with a stereo tuner standard, how ever the European model had a choice. Its interesting to note how ever, more European models seem to have found there way into Australia than Australian designated units.
Great units, but the DCDC's and load gears are to be checked out. But they can be rebilt with the right gear and we have done dozens of DCDC's, replacing every part including non available transformers.
Hi JSP,
Vcr Sony Betamax model SL-C9ME is multi-standard (?): PAL, SECAM and NTSC with two or three speed recording (BI plakback only) BII and BIII? Yes or no?
Perhaps, model SL-C9PS with SECAM OST, different timer programming/number channel (tuner) from SL-C9E?

Hey everybody, I'm back from a vacation to upstate New York (Lake George, I'm sure you're curious, Olive). It was enjoyable to say the least, but the only thing close to being on-topic was a marvelous "flea market" store that had large electronic and computer lots, but the current roundup was mostly old computer gear I didn't care to plow through, and lots of training aids from electronics schools. It did seem to be the kind of place that would have Beta VCRs regularly, so, Olive, if you ever go to the Lake Geore area, the place was called "Silverwears".
Hello,
I am looking for US Betamax Fans that are interested in exchanging japanese Movies.(every genre, excluding music videos)I am living in Germany, but have a multinorm Betamax and can record in NTSC too.Maybe you are interested in some rare PAL Betamovies.
_@_v - eee! all the summer we'd get off the northway at the lake george exit to get to lake luzerne! also went a couple times to the great escape...

I drove by the Great Escape several times... stayed at the Fort William Henry. Very nice place. I guess you'll have no trouble finding the place I'm talking about then... had a ball making up funny names for the rollercoasters and big spinning whateveritis... The whirly-puke... the spin-n-puke... the whirl-n-hurl... you get the picture. Endless variation.
Speaking of Great Escape(s).. I imagine you have all heard by now that Charles Bronson is no more.. It's like of late my entire childhood is dying, almost everyone I enjoyed and/or looked up to.. really gets to make one feel old.. :|

_@_v - eee! i also have a multi-system sl-t50me but the only japanese movie i have right now is godzilla - king of monsters.
_@_v - as for great escape rides there's of course the vomit comet or what's known as a general electric scenic railroad...
_@_v - or "enron 401k - the ride"
but then wouldn't it just be the Columbia?
That "strange and mysterious" ebay link about a cassette reference plate has a Sony part number starting by J, so therefore it is some kind of jig. For me it looks like a deluxe dummy cassette which could be used to work on reel tables.
Well anyway, Just let it be known, that I was talking to "Replacementremotes.com" on the 'phone (For the remote to the LD player you sold me, Brenda), and they said that they'll have a whole new web site up by the end of the month. Lots of stock is in and they have stuff that's not listed, so if anyone wants some of the nicer remotes like the RMT-143 and so on they should check the site next month... those things usually go for LOTS of money on Ebay...
Hey guys, tis me. Been away for the summer, but came in possesion of a mint T-50ME just recently. Over the past months, I've seen a lot of horror/cult films on PAL beta (from UK) on eBay that I've never seen anywhere in the States. So, needed something to play these on. Although, I'd love to acquire a hifi PAL deck (HF99? HF100? ) of some type since my TV will accept the signal directly.
Hey Sergio-I've also got picture of the Navco 2500 on my computer, from the time I saw one up for auction on Ebay. If you want I'll email the files to you.
_@_v - yeee! sl-t50-amies rule!
Truly... Brenda has some Multisystem deck to sell me, but I don't remember quite what it is.... But my computer can use any kind of video standard so it could be of much use...

_@_v - ed tapes would've been marked as such and were mostly black colored anyway
ED tapes are marked EL-XXX, not L-XXX, and I believe they only came in 500 and 750 foot lengths.

The ED's come in EL-250 also. I got two each of all three lengths w/ that EDV-9000 last year. Been using BC-SP's since then. Let's see, did LOTR2 from the DVD, most recently, and can hardly tell the difference in quality between the ED dupe and the original.
Ontario repair depots: Who aside from this one outfit I talked to on the phone can repair a Beta? (Two, actually?) Toronto, preferably.
SL-HFT7@t_e_l_u_s_.net
Re: Betamax repairs in Toronto -- Only Canadian listing on the parent site to this chat-page is in another time zone. http://www.palsite.info/directory.html#canada Near the bottom of the page is one in NY and one in Mich. (Still a long drive, especially if you didn't phone first).
Better idea, scan ebay.ca for a week or two. You often see a Betamax in Toronto area claiming to have been recently serviced. Contact that vendor and find out where it was serviced (and their opinion of the tech).
No matter where you end up, look for Sony Betamax factory service training certificates on the wall.
so the ED-amies will work with Beta SP tape? Why is that?
[email protected]'tlikespamortrolls.uk.co
Betacam SP tapes use the same or a similar Metal tape formula as ED-Metal tapes.
In other news, the record companies are finally starting to buckle onder the pressure of MP3 downloaders...
Universal Music Slashes CD Prices
LOS ANGELES (Sept.4) - Universal Music Group, whose roster of artists includes 50 Cent, U2, Elton John and Diana Krall, will cut the price of its wholesale CDs and push for a $12.98 retail cap on its discs in an attempt to woo music fans back into record stores.
The world's largest recording company hopes retailers, who have suffered as industrywide music sales dropped 31 percent the last three years, will follow its lead and pass on the savings to consumers.
Universal hopes the actual retail price of most of its CD will end up about $10 or less, comparable to the $9.99 retail price that music fans enjoyed in the early 1990s, at the height of a price war between the recording companies.
''Our new pricing model will enable U.S. retailers to offer music at a much more appealing price point in comparison to other entertainment products,'' said Jim Urie, president of Universal Music & Video Distribution. ''We are confident this pricing approach will drive music fans back into retail stores.''
If retailers also drop their prices, Universal's move would make CDs more competitive with online services, including Apple Computer Inc.'s popular iTunes Music Store and Buy.com's BuyMusic.com.
It was not immediately clear how retailers would respond to the move. Company officials said they had not discussed the pricing strategy with retailers, who would be notified formally on Thursday.
Kevin Milligan, vice president of merchandising at Torrance, Calif.-based record retailer Wherehouse Entertainment Inc., said he had not received notice from Universal, but that in general, the move is good news for consumers.
''Whether it will ultimately be good news for retail? I think it's still up in the air,'' he said.
Officials at the National Association of Recording Merchandisers did not return calls Wednesday. Officials at EMI, BMG and Warner Music Group declined to comment; Sony Music Group officials could not be reached.
Universal's current wholesale price for a CD album is $12.02, with a manufacturer suggested retail price of $18.98. Under the new pricing structure, the wholesale price would be $9.09.
The wholesale price for CDs by a handful of performers, including Eminem and Shania Twain, would be about a dollar more, said Jim Urie, president of Universal Music & Video Distribution.
The company also said it would cut wholesale prices on cassettes and change the suggested retail price to $8.98. Latin recordings and multiple disk packages or CD box sets would not be included in the pricing change.
The price changes would go into effect by Oct. 1.
The decision to cut prices underscores how badly the industry has been hurting, said Josh Bernoff, an analyst with Forrester Research, Inc. ''That's basically saying 'we give up','' Bernoff said.
Revenue from album sales has declined from $14.6 billion in 1999 to $12.6 billion in 2002, according to the Recording Industry Association of America, a trade group that represents the largest recording companies.
The recording industry blames its sales slump largely on illegal music swapping over peer-to-peer networks and is expected to take legal action against hundreds of suspected file-swappers this month.
But industry critics say the record companies have, for more than a decade, ignored the effects of soaring CD prices on sales. They also contend the artistic quality of music has deteriorated.
''This is something that the industry has failed to address ... You could make downloading music go away tomorrow and the industry would still face challenges,'' said Sean Baenen, managing director of Odyssey, a consumer marketing research firm in San Francisco.
''All the data suggests that quality and price are major factors to the equation.''

Hi,
I think so that:Videocassette Betacam Oxide can to work in vcrs Beta and SuperBeta (also Betacord and others).Videocassette Betacam SP Metal can to work in vcr ED-Beta only.
Betacam (SP) -> (ED-)Beta5 minutes -> (E)L-12510 minutes -> (E)L-25020 minutes -> (E)L-500 30 minutes -> (E)L-750
Videocassette Betacam SP format large cannot to use whatever vcrs Beta format.Videocassette Betacam (SP) format small already recorded (from vcrs Beta domestic) cannot to use whatever vcrs Betacam professional.Videocassette Betacam (SP) are used (second-hand market and format small only) can to ri-record from TV, camcorder, vcr, stereo Hi-Fi and others.

I think Sergi more or less pegged it on the ED tapes/Betacam SP tapes conversion. It would be cool to modify a Betacam VCR that takes the large shells to actually be a Betamax VCR, so you could record for 4.5 hours at BI... would take extensive parts swapping (probabbly just subsitute a whole chassis, it's only the basket ass'y you want so it will load the tapes... The closes thing I can think of is the SLO-1800 that looks like a Umatic. Would be neat but very difficult.
Hi Sean,
You are genius! He how to know it? Can he to modifiy chassis of the Betacam (SP) mechanical for large cassette in the vcr (blank) prototype with Betamax's or ED-Beta's circuit electric and display, but without chassis of the Betamax for small cassette. He can to recorder for one cassette format large 4.5 hours at BI or better BIs. I must to study and to test table features between Betamax and Betacam for speed recording/measure of tape (I do to draw vcr prototype only).
Bye

Did anyone else watch "Cowboy Bebop" last Wednesday night on Cartoon Network's Adult Swim? It's a Sci-Fi Japan-originated animated program, based in 2071. The episode is centered around a Betamax tape. The protagonists receive a Beta tape in the mail, and track down a videophile who can play it for them. Upon seeing the cassette, he immediately gushes all the benefits of Beta over VHS! It was so exciting! Anyhow, the videophile's beta machine is broken, so they must track down a working machine, with many adventures (and lessons) along the way. I won't reveal the whole episode.
The program is from 1998, so Beta was still being sold in Japan. It was episode #18- "Speak like a child." If anyone wants it, I could burn the episode onto a CD-R in AVI format, then mail it. I would only want postage in return. Email me for more information.
Does anyone know of where to get the main chip for a Sony TT F1 UB tuner unit? Everything else on my system works (or worked) perfectly before [email protected]
_@_v - i would wonder if there would be ANY surviving videotapes vhs or beta that far off into the future - videotape is only rated to be good for maybe 15-20 years at best. or if anyone in that time would even care about the difference between vhs or beta.
_@_v - it's only been 35/40 years and it's virtually impossible to find a working dictabelt machine (that recorded dictation-grade audio onto a red plastic belt in sort of the same way as' ye olde' wax cylinders) anywhere. when the national archives wanted to listen to some dictabelt recordings made by lady bird johnson in the white house they had to go to england to find one.
That's odd... Vidipax can handle all those things, Dictabelt and dictaband (both made by "Big Blue" (IBM)). And those things turn up on Ebay all the time. I've always wanted to screw around with one but I've got too much sh*t as it is and they're very bulky, so given that I like to USE my vintage tech, I'd be much better served by, say, a minifon tape recorder.
eeeee... how much you wanna bet that the "II" is the "II" in "BII/BIII," lol!!

Reminds me of an old Sparky Shultz cartoon (Peanuts) where Lucy showed up with a jump-roap she touted as "Hi-Fi". Charlie brown contemplated this for a minute before exclaiming: "How can a jump-roap be Hi-Fi????"
Hi all
Just managed to get hold of a NEC PVC 740e. Does anybody have any information on this machine (I believe that the PVC 700 is almost identical), or know of any popular faults/remedies?
Would be great if anybody could help.
Thankyou muchly!!
hi every one this is dizja
Please don't ignore or underestimate the capabilities of Beta Hi-Fi as an audio recording medium.
In the mid-80s I had a problem in that my Akai R-R deck had gone with my ex-wife, and my Bang and Olufsen deck had conclusively died. I thought I was left with no recording device other than a compact cassette deck, which of course couldn't be taken seriously. I think I only bought the thing because it looked pretty on top of my matching Marantz amp. My SLHF100 came to the rescue. I used it extensively to record jazz from radio and - somewhat guiltily- from vinyl albums as well. I mainly used BASF chrome tape.
I've now started to transfer these recordings to CD-R, mainly for use in the car, playing them on my SLHF950. Despite their being anything up to 18 years old, the quality is excellent, and there's no audible trace of the print-through one would expect from R-R recordings stored for so long.
For any necessary cleaning-up, mainly inter-track noise, I'm using a very good freeware package called "Audacity", which I can recommend unreservedly. They are dedicated to the freeware principle and are well worth supporting.
Viva Beta Hi-Fi!

I have some old beta max tapes from the 80s (Sony Video Cassette L-500)that my dad wants me to convert to VHS. I am having trouble finding a way to switch it over without costing a fortune. I am in the NYC area, please let me know of other options. Thank you!
Sergio - thanks for the interesting French site, even if I don't entirely go along with some of their versions of format history. Unfortunately, the page setting out their tariffs and what they do returns a "URL not found" message. I'm in the market for French-language material, especially from FR2 and the French version of ARTE, provided of course that the price is right. The complication is that while my TV is multistandard, I don't have a SECAM L VCR, so I can only use PAL and NTSC in VHS, and only PAL in Beta. Is there anything out there?
I have a Toshiba SD-120E and I need a hack code for it. If anyone can help it would be appricated.
degga! http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3046365535&ssPageName=ADME:B:SS:US:1 too bad I have that penisonique adaptor and it's the one that fits the VHS cameras, not the K-connector. Wonder how theyyyyy got it to work, lol {(unless the other adapter included works with it?)?
Today I purchased 2 films on Beta tape at flea market: 'The Pilot' (1979) and 'The Internecine Project' (1974). Each of them is 2 pcs so I have bought 4 cassettes. As these tapes had been distributed by Dutch company Filmpack I am afraid that they may be in Dutch language. I'll see it this evening. Does anyone had had an experience with this Filmpack?

PRIMEDIA Inc.New York, New York, USA
It's a revolution that hasn't gone completely ignored by consumers here in the USA. High Definition Television, or HDTV tops the list of new products and technologies that will soon be in homes across the country and around the world. Only trouble is, a new technology can take years to become a standard. Learning about such things can be a daunting task most of the information available is manufacturer or industry organization propaganda and rounding up the best advice is often difficult chore. There are sites that offer practical comparisons and some that speak to the propeller head in all of us. Finding the right balance between technological wonder and sound shopping is tough. Take Betamax (http://www.urbanlegends.com/products/beta_vs_vhs.html) for example, still a much better product in many cases but long dead on the home electronics front. Competing standards and formats often confuse the issue, as was the case with Sony's Betamax. Do you remember the Laser Disc format or the analog Video Disk format? How about the excitement of looking at a show on a color television for the first time or when a television remote control made a lot of noise when you told him or her to change the channel and move the antennae until the picture was right?
For those who have some catching up to do, or already know a bit about the new technologies which have been combined into something known as Home Theater, this site will be an informative visit. Home Theater now includes amazing quality and performance in the areas of picture and sound. Units that will play a number of formats, pull digital television signals off of a cable or out of thin air, even receive television and radio programming from satellites. Even in the car!
The site for Home Theater Magazine has something for every level of interest and expertise, tutorials and the glossary make it worth a visit. Content looks at all sorts of things including DVD players, HDTV Tuners, Receivers, Power Amplifiers, and Loudspeakers. Adding pointers to related Do It Yourself sites is a nice touch.

FEH!!! How many times did it take you guys to pass yer driving test? :( I just got back from taking mine and I failed it. :(
I love to chat with other people
I passed the driving test on the first go. Wel anyway that camera you mentioned has and adapter shown that works with the power supply, it will work with all the beta stuff and other stuff too thanks to that adapter. It's the box in the background. It should work with everything you have.
I'm not buying it, I just wanted to make it known that that adapter wouldn't work with teh cam. Didn't pay attention to the other stuf...
Nope the adapter will work with the cam because of the little adapter in the back... notice there is a box hanging off the K-connector, with the Silver plug on the end, to go to a K plug.
woops... I meant to say "To go to a 10-pin plug"
