Well it is a reasonably valued item amongst Beta fans in that it is one of the 3 or 4 'digital effects' class of Betas that Sony produced just before it started putting out VHS machines. Probably worth double a brand new VCR goes for today at the minimum...

I see it, Olive... oddly enough it's an old consumer model, and a crappy one at that. I thik a GCS-50 or SLO-1800 would fit in much better... The whole thing is still drool-worthy, however, and I suppose if I had that much money to burn I'd go for an SLO-1800 while I was at it....

Hi, Sergio, thanks for coming back to me. The trouble is, SECAM L isn't compatible with SECAM EAST (the former Soviet bloc standard) or with Middle East SECAM. It uses negative modulation and a different sound subcarrier frequency. I've played SECAM L on my PAL VHS decks, but you only get black and white, in my experience with poor video quality. I have an SLFH100, but it is a UK only model, strictly PAL and UHF. My SLHF950E (an import from Germany) is pan-European in that it can be switched to use VHF and the slightly different mainland UHF frequencies, but again it's strictly PAL.

I'm not familiar with the other machines you mention, and I'd be grateful for any more information on any of them.

_@_v - to greg, what model beta are you using? some of the Betas with x-2 playback won't enable it on tapes recorded on b-II speed - which brings us to your second question b-I, II and III are the 3 speeds n.t.s.c. betas were recorded in. b-III was the slowest speed.

_@_v - to susan, you can either buy another beta off of e-bay or look for a video duplicator in the phone book. video production houses also dupe videos to another format as well.

X-2 playback in BI mode is impossible, even on ultra-high end decks like the SL-HF-900. It's funny, though, because you can press the button and nothing happens. Since Beta speeds are all multiples, to do X-2 playback is easy, the machine is just run at the next fastest speed, but when you're already going as fast as you can, i.e. BI, there is no faster speed with smooth playback, just Betascan.

Well he said it wouldn't do 2x playback on an X1 tape (Confused yet? [evil grin]). So I assumed he's got a BI (X1, same difference) tape. Or maybe a lot of them. They're not that common, only a few decks could make 'em, let's see, SL-6300, SL-7200, SL-8200, SL-HF-750, SL-HF-1000, also super Hiband, as well as: SL-HF-2100. Others include the Industrials SLO-260, 340, 320, 323, 325, 383; GCS-50, the BMC-1000K camcorder, and any of the select few turbocharged SL-HF-900's out there, of which I have one.

If Andy Sanchez will post again, maybe he can say how many total mods he's done. The info was published in a magazine, but I dont' know if many people did it, the numbers could be anywhere from the hundreds to the thousands, I have no idea.

Well if a consumer or pro deck made it won't make a difference except maybe if its got linear stereo and if its important than you'll need a pro Betamax to do it, but I think what you're asking is is it a Betamax (consumer format) or a Betacam (Pro format). Unless someone stuck a Betamax tape in an oxide Betacam deck, that is a regular Betamax tape, 99.999% chance of it being so. Why copy to VHS then to digital? Why not go straight to digital to minimize quality loss? I understand you need digital, presumably for non-linear editing.

Regarding the turbo charged 900's I know I have had all six I have owned modified, although I had worn one out and had some of the parts needed for the modifications taken out of it to modify the last one I picked up a couple of years ago. I also know that two fo my friends have had the modifications done to their 900's through the same technicain I use and one of them had another 900 partly modified so thatit would playback, BIs porperly but would not record in that mode.

Hmm, Bobby, never thought of using a PiP set as an editing tool, that's a damn good idea! Also, lots of nice decks will play back with double speed audio at normal pitch. Beta HiFi enables this, that is one feature VHS truly could never match and never will. The only way VHS could do it was back with linear stereo, the BR-6400U has a whole board in it that lowers the audio pitch in 2x playback to normal, but it's a: a pro deck, not a consumer deck, and, b: linear stereo, as opposed to HiFi.

Yup...X2 speed is no part of NTSC BI but operate smoothly at BII and BIII, Unless turbocharged with 'Methanol'.

'Bout X2,4,6,8,even 24 speed at DVD runs OK at some Chinese Machine, few of them make pitch sounds.

Funny to know that scratched DVD Disc wont play at ONKYO ,unexpectedly works fine with the China Clone Player.

Re: 1969 VTR. Sony (and others) made some important advances in VTR engineering about that time but just getting B&W images to play back on any half-inch machine other than the one that recorded them was hard enough that year. The article to which Sergio refers differs from anything I recall reading as "latest news" in 1969 electronics magazines. The new EIAJ standard was amazing enough that year (as man was walking on the moon for the first time).

"Reel" history... http://www.labguysworld.com/VTR_TimeLine.htm

I wonder what an EIAJ recording of Neil Armstrong would be worth today.

Hello folks! Today's trip to Goodwill yeilded a few beta goodies. A bunch of prerecorded films including the first Highlander movie (still the best of them all!)! Also, some blanks: a half-dozen Quantegy BC -30 's and a dozen of those Sony "SuperSaver" blanks; some L-370's (of which I already had some) and others, yet another length, the L-425 (the info no the rear of boxes specifies that there was also an L-625 available, but I have yet to find any). The latter tapes appear to be unused (NOS) as they still have label kits inside; also those I tried to view were blank, but they weren't shrinkwrapped. Not bad for about $25 or so.

I would first try the Sony DAPC (Direct Access parts Center) although they have changed their once straightforward interface for something that is a blatant attempt to misderect the consumer into buying something wrong. They still seem to stock things for a surprising number of Betamax decks, although we wonder why some are listed at all when all you can do is spend $93 on a patch cable or somesuch nonsense.

The best advice is to look at the sales of similar Betamaxes and see what they're going for. The nice thing about your Beta is that it is a multisystem and thus you have more markets open to you...

If you're in the US check the listings for Beta VCRs here...

http://listings.ebay.com/aw/listings/list/category39830/index.html?from=R11

If you're in the UK, click this link to see the listings for Betamaxes

http://search.ebay.co.uk/search/search.dll?query=Betamax&maxRecordsPerPage=100&category1=8345&combine=y&sc=1&SortProperty=MetaNewSort&st=0

If you're in Germany you might check these listings...

http://search.ebay.de/search/search.dll?query=Betamax&maxRecordsPerPage=100&category1=8345&combine=y&sc=1&SortProperty=MetaNewSort&st=0

If you're elsewhere you'll want to do a search of Betamax VCRs in the eBay site for your country by going to the http://www.ebay.com home page and clicking the link to your country...

Yeah those are neat. I've got a few myself, including a large Lasonic deck with two Cassette drives, and a "Rapor" with three! None of mine have turntables, however.

That is quite an impressive device there Sean, worthy of the word ghetto blaster. What music do you annoy your neighbours with, classic old skool hiphop, '93 funky breaks or that vicious jiggy attempt of music which passes as hiphop today?

I don't listen to rap, etc., but I'd imagine that it is a very good system if you like that sort of music...

ahhh, have not heard it called rap for a while, man than makes me feel old. I only have vinyl so it would be safe to win that ghetto blaster but the guy has'nt got back to me about shipping to the uk, perhaps I would have to get the panasonic one.

You'd have to supply it with DC or the batteries because if it's designed for the US it will want 117VAC at 60 cycles, not whatever the UK is (250?) at 50 cycles. It might be switchable but I don't know.

_@_v - eeee! i dl-ed a couple mp3s of grandmaster flash and the furious five "white lines" and "the message". i think i still have this tape i found in a desk in school of classic 80s old-school rap including a jessie jackson for president (1984!) song...

_@_v - "hypocrites and uncle-tom's are talkin' trash! liberty and justice are a thing of the past! they want a stronger nation at any cost - even if it means that everything will soon be lost..."

_@_v - i miss my sleechy old sanyo 3 piece boombox. it was bitchy trying to press the record button cuz of the way they designed it but it had dolby and audio input jacks and you could separate the speakers....

http://i15.ebayimg.com/03/i/00/94/62/92_3.JPG eeeeeeeee!!!!!!!! Thas the ghetto blaster I think of when i hear "ghetto blaster!" i ALWAYS think Lasonic first!!!!!! Well ennyway the Lasonic I want has dual tape decques, but one of them is like a car's tape deck, where you stick the tape in sideways. I've seen it before, but i guess it's very rare.

Yeah Jesse that's the one I've GOT. Some dude was gonna buy it from me along with a GE for $100 for the pair. He then fell off the earth. I've tried to contact him but it's come to naught. Maybe I'll sell it to you for less, but keep in mind it's missing the cover to the tape drive, along with all the buttons, but the drive that loads like the car decks only needs a belt (you will have to get a shop to change it for you, it's hard to do). I'll let it go (it's really doing nothing for me), make an offer (I paid nothing for it, so just be reasonable).

On the subject of music, I was never a big rap fan, and I truly despise all the modern sh*te, but I do remember a time when it was not trying to be so bloody serious, take for instance a number called "Rapper's Delight" which had a hillarious verse about a meal at a friend's house gone wrong ("Have you ever been over to a friend's to eat"...)like I Said I never did like rap but it was for a while just people having fun.

Actually Jesse the one in the link you show seems to be rarer than the TRC-931. BTW mine is the orriginal, not the re-release. Well instead of clogging up the Betamax page here I'll just put the link to a really great boombox place before some trolls get on us for "Off-topic" posting.

Greetings,I have an sl-hf300 betamax, the remote and about 12-15 tapes with music videos and assorted movies. It needs repair but it will come on. I am asking $50 for all. Is this a realistic price? It was top of the line when I got it back in the '80's. If nothing else please tell me the name of a repair center who may give me $10 or $15 for it [email protected]

While the HF-300 wasn't exactly "Top of the line" (I have the brochure right here), it's a great deck and it's also quite refreshing to have someone ask a fair price for a deck. I'd jump for it if I weren't swimming in Beta HiFis right now, but I suppose someone else might.

Most Betas are immune to Macrovision because the AGC circuit is responds too slow to meet Macrovision standards. I heard Sony wasn't required to build their vcrs within these standards because the format was already marginal and it wouldn't represent a significant economical threath to let users copy commercial tapes. As a matter of fact, we could say the AGC circuit in VHS is "more precise" than in Beta as it responds quicker.

No, it's that the AGC is on the input. Ever try to connect a pre-beta/VHS black and white camera to a VCR??? no dice if it's a VHS< even a pro VHS, but Beta was made with a wider range of acceptable input tolerances so therefor it can accept a B&W camera. Such as this one, which I have one of: http://www.labguysworld.com/Museum008_005.htm

An IC is an integrated circuit. A chip. a PCB is a board (Don't know the exact phrase). It's missing a chip. you'd pretty much need another SLO-1700 to get one out of, and you really must wonder why the chip is missing...

this is the responce, IC was taken out because it was faulty and was lost before it was ordered from Sony. Now, the only way to fix it is to find the schematic diagram. As far as I know, Sony NZ have a diagram (I have seen the copy). I remember that the IC was CXA.... is this machine worth taking a gamble on for $ 30 /40.

The SLO-1700, if I remember, (Being that I am in a NTSC country and not a PAL country), is a Beta HiFi industrial deck. For $ 30 -40, it's probably worth it (what's the exchange rate??? well even in US dollars it's worth it, but in US dollars that's pusing it). Industrial decks are very well made but sometimes they can show up pretty much worn to a nub. If it's in nice shape then I'd go for it. Also PAL Beta HiFis are more rare, so that increases its value over, say, a NTSC model SLO-1400.
