Reading back abit, I remember a friend of mine having one of those Lasonic boomboxes back in the late 80's. his was a very similar model to that one shown on eBay but it also had 4 or 5 shortwave bands in addition to AM/FM. Also, a pair of TV-type rabbit-ear antennas for said shortwave. Think it may've also had VHF TV sound (but can't remember). Although how many "brothuhs" would be walking down the street w/ one of those perched on their shoulder playing the BBC or Voice of America??

Yeah... Shortwave is pretty cool but I can't see it's appeal to the main market group of that kind of radio... and I've never seen the point to TV sound...

Well I suppose it'd have a use if it has an MTS (or NICAM or whatever) decoder in it so you could tune into, say, concerts and such in stereo, but that's about it, and I don't think they had an MTS decoder if they had TV sound since it was a rare thing to start with.

Well anyone know the MTS decoder's model number??? My Sony tuner/selector doens't get MTS but it can with that decoder. My SL-2700 could get it too but I don't use its tuner at all.

I guess TV sound is for if you want to catch up on your favourite TV programme when you can't otherwise be watching a TV set. Like if you wanted to keep up with your 'stories' whilst labouring in your cubicle at work.

The channel selector buttons read "BBC1, BBC2, ITV1, ITV2, 5,6..." Very clever. I've never seen a similar overlay for the American or Japanese markets, due to regional channel/number mental associations.

Hi! I have a Betamax machine which I have had since February, and still can't be able to work it. The tape won't even go in. I've tried a nearby repair shop, and it costs like $20 just to look at it. So, I'm asking if you can somehow give me repair tips as on how to fix my problem. And don't say I need a new machine. I've had this one since February and still haven't got a chance to use it. So if any of you know any repair tips or know a site where to find any, please let me know. E-mail me! Thanks!

To Jesse England - these channel designations are a bit strange. ITV2 is of quite recent origin - 3 or 4 years at most, I think born on BSkyB satellite but now on digital terrestrial and I think on what's left of cable (which is expiring fast over here). To the best of my knowledge it's never been on analogue. Channel 5 is a national terrestrial channel perhaps 8 years old, now also on satellite etc. We never had a terrestrial channel 6. Channel 4 - national terrestrial and now on satellite etc. - isn't mentioned, and it has been around for at least 20 years. Somebody at Sony could foretell the future, but not very well?

Yes I noticed that myself. Some very old stateside radio sets I've seen have preset buttons that were set (I think by a serviceman, not the end user) to local stations and provided with similar preset designations. So you would have a button for the call letters of a station. Nowadays a station's frequency is as common an identifier as its call letters.

I've seen similar "salesmen-set" radios as well, Sean. Sony had an AM/FM radio (ICF-S5W) with region-specific AM stations printed on a switchable display, situated below the numerical frequency display. On the back of the radio was a map of the U.S. divided into about seven numbered regions. A dial turned the AM station display, which seemed very durable. I suppose it was designed with the frequent traveler in mind.

Bill, I didn't know ITV had a second station. In north america, a VCR like that would come with a sheet of plastic "channel tags" so one could customize their deck to the local stations based on the actual broadcasting channel. To my knowledge, I've never seen any labeled "NBC, CBS, etc." The station-specific tags seem rather exotic.

To Erich Reinhardt...

It would help if you (and other people with Beta-related problems) could be more specific like with the model number (that's pretty important as there were dozens of Betamax models) and a brief mention of the symptoms or lack thereof and maybe we can talk you though whatever is wrong.

To Hein in South Africa. Try getting hold of some small-shell Betacam Oxide formula tapes. A BCT -30 is the same as an L-750. TV Studios and Production houses often let go their one or two-pass tapes cheap. Otherwise try to get tape lots off of Ebay.

Or look on the web for video tape sellers with Beta still in stock. Try dealing with Sony directly. They're still making Beta tape for the US and Asian markets at least.

A YahooShopping search ought to find plenty of places with a variety of price ranges.

Wow. If you have a sears and that is the least of your problems then you are in luck. The last Sears model I had hold of had a rusted head drum among other issues. They are so cheap that it's probably worth it to just look on Ebay for a local one and purchase it if the price is right, and then swap out the front panel parts.

After my recent move i have realised that i have way more VCRs than i'll ever use and have decided to let some of them find good homes. Currently up for adoption are 2 Sony SL-HF 400s which were in good working order last time I had them pluugged in, neither of them has the remote around- I seem to have more VCRs than remotes although a universal one (or another Sony Beta one) will make them function. I am asking $120 each for them plus shipping- I am in central Illinois. Or since I am on the road alot I can bring them with me to a convention I am at on the weekends- across the midwest- schedule is at http://www.midwestcomix.com

Sad little thing, isn't it? Reminds me of a particular Panasonic studio camera (It's painfully common, although I don't recall the number) that usually has a nice zoom lens with a push rod and all, but occasionally turns up with a mundane little lens about 1.5" long, which looks really terrible on the huge camera body...

I'm wondering if that was a transition camera from when Sony was switching the production line to the HVC-2000 series shape of camera but found that they still had some HVC-1000 innards left over. So being thrifty, the Sony engineers just shoved them into some HVC-2000 shells.

Beta machines from Sony are the best bet, with a few notable exceptions they are are at least well made, if not feature laden. Other companies like Sanyo, NEC, and Toshiba, can be hit-or-miss, having made a very good machine with some bad ones, etc. DVD recorders are whoppingly expensive, and given the copyright stranglehold the music and motion picture industries have the technology firms in, it will probably be of dubious utility. I suppose if you're interested in quality you want an old S-VHS deck (not the new S-VHS-ET machines which really don't do anything at all) like a JVC HR-S5500U or the like. But then again, if the tapes are in good shape, why copy them at all? if they're failing, I wouldn't risk doing it yourself, but rather have a professional firm do it for you onto the media of choice instead of spending $900 on a DVD recorder and $ 200 on a decent Betamax???

EXACTLY sean.... you always manage to say things perfectly and precisely lol. I think you've turned me into a buique fan lol.... not that I'm gonna trade in the eunie or anything but the parque avenue and the roadmaster SEDAN with dynaride dont look too bad. Saw some old lady driving a RM sedan in tan with tan leather and it looked showroom condition lol. Anyway, yes, I agree that sony's the best because I seem to be able to just pluck one out of the goodwill pile and put it right into service without doing anything to it. sanyos are always duds for me..

sanyo had a couple nice ones but they just never show themselves. Sanyo made a bad name for themselves, unfortunately. NEC had the BIs VCR, and Toshiba a couple worthy Beta HiFi entries, but overall the machines just never stood up to Sony on a whole...

The Roadmaster is quite an incredible car. Yes, the station wagon is rather fuddy and uninteresting, but you should really drive one... the Dynaride is a very nice feature, you won't have to slow down for speed bumps any if you're already driving parking lot speed (Except you get fed up with people who take them at 2MPH, and then almost ruin someone elses car on the bumps when you aren't thinking...) Both are very powerful cars, the Park Ave having a 285 HP supercharged 3800 MKII engine, and the Roadmaster having the 350 V8 out of the Corvette...

And Jesse would you believe I've run into a couple Asian cars I like??? Well mainly because they're quirky... The Nissan/Datsun 300ZX from the 80s (not the 90s) and also the Toyota MR2 ("Mister Two" they called them...) from the 80s. Yes, I realize they'd both probably rust into nothing but they're interesting cars nonetheless.

I'm not sure, but Betamovie is younger than betamax, and it's still trademarked, but maybe they renewed it because they continued to produce Tapes and Recorders, but Betamovies just died so they dind't bother. Trinicon has been around since the 70's at least, possibly earlier, and the technology was eclipsed long before the trademark ran out.

Hi everyone..I wanted to post this in the Betacam section but it looks kinda dead. I figured I'd get more of a response here.

I recently bought a BVW-25 Betacam recorder. I need to know the 4 Pin power configuration so I can make my own power-supply. I forgot what it was. Funny enough, as big and bulky as the manual is, it doesn't tell you anything about it.

Video companies want over $100 for one. I can make one for under $ 30.

I've heard of a converter that you can play beta tapes in a VHS... Is this true? and if so, where can I get one.

It's a dirty rotten lie. There is no such converter. It is a technical impossibility. The Beta/VHS combo VCR got only as far as a prototype if it got off the drawing board (unknown). You will have to get a beta VCR. We need to add something about this to the disclaimer...

Hi,

This model Sony Betamax portable SL-F1 is model European (video PAL) and model japanese. Equivalent model version U.S.A. was Sony SL-2000.

Sony Betamax SL-2000 had copied Technics LP turntable because introduce before of Sony SL-2000, instead of " SL-F1 ":http://panasonic.jp/technics-audio/popup/introduce/SL-2000.htm

Please advise ... I have a Sony SL-HF360 which I bought new on 06/01/89. (I still have the receipt.) In my frustration at seeing no Betamax repair stations advertised any longer -- I tried to clean the heads and align the tape guides myself.

I can hear some of you laughing from here! What started as good audio and scratchy (like bad tracking) pictures now seems to be pretty good pictures with terrible audio. I only make it worse when I try to backtrack my steps.

I would like to have someone talk me through the tape guides alignment process -- or tell me where I can get a maintenance and repair manual. Thanks in advance (for not laughing too loudly at a frustrated amateur). By the way, I'm in New Jersey, USA.

Thanks again, Ray [email protected]

Thanks for that guys much appreciated. That SL looks good. Ive never used ebay before so this should be an experiance for me. Do these things tend to go quite high? What would be an acceptable price to pay for it?

Hello,

I was wondering if a knowledgeable person could advise on a problem. My beta has suddenly decided to output a darker picture. Strangely enough, it plays tapes that were taped earlier in the year at the same brightness, but recent stuff looks a lot darker in contrast, although the setup and leads have remained the same. Is this a sign of the heads going or are the bnc/scart inputs dying? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Good news is it's most likely not the heads. Bad news is it sounds like maybe the record luminance circuitry is going. I'll leave it to the "techies" on this page to talk you through it.

Hi guys,I decided to sell my ED Beta EDV-7300. It is a collection peace of course. That means that I am the only owner of the ED Beta since I bought it in 1992. I used it for multimedia purposes between 1992 and 1994. Since then, I kept it in very good condition. Heads were treated by profesionnals and are in very good conditions too.

A very good and serious buyer should contact me. Price : 600,00 U$. CODIt' a bargain if I consider what Ray was offering me days ago...

I live in Quebec City, Canada, but hey, distance is no matter !

I have a Sony Betamax SL-C9 . I require a "DC to DC Converter" as my tuner no longer operates. I contacted Sony and was advised that Sony ceaced making this part some 8 years ago. Does anyone know where I can get this item, either new or reconditioned?

John
