Has anyone a copy of the manual for me about the Sony SL-F60 Betamax Videorecorder ?How many movies have been made for the Betamax System ?

Sony themselves may be able to get you the manual.

Just about everything that was produced on video until around 1993 is on Betamax, the earlier in time, the higher the saturation, and before 1976 it was mostly all betamax, with only a few other things competing.

Yeah Jesse the dudes at radio shack will be able to get that thing running if they're worth their salt. It's got a control-L port... want an RM-E100V I'll let go cheap, and then you can edit down from ED-beta to anything with a Pause socket, control L, or control S port!

Hi everyone.. just dropping in to say hi. I hope everyone is well. :)

Still have my Sanyo VCR-7300, and it's working great. I did finally get a brand new battery for it, and made up an AC adaptor so I could actually charge it.

I brought home a ßeta Hi-Fi deck from my stateside vacation. I don't know for sure what model it is, but since it's hi-fi and not SuperBeta, I think it's an SL-HF300. The power supply is croaked on it, but I'm going to try swapping out the STK in it and see if it comes to life, since it's only dead on some voltages (the clock works). Wish me luck.

Take care, all, and stay well. :)

Yeah Brenda that sounds like an STK problem. That is what was wrong with my SL-HF-900 before Andy got hold of it. (now it's fine, of course :) The clock will work, but not set, right? You can power it up, sorta-kinda, maybe? It would depend what voltages are not working as to what can you do. Maybe you can actually set the whole clock? I think the STK is socketed so you may have an easy time of it... Whatever it entails you'll have an easier time than I would...

That could also be an SL-HF 500 which was identical to the 300 except for improved tape transport option in pause mode - you got tape advance and decline. I have a spare SL-HF 300 PS if you have a need for it...

OK.. here's the scoop with this machine I have here...

Powers up, clock can be set, and does run and keep time.

No power indicator on the on button, however, the tuner indicates *88* and the ßII/III indicator lights, and can be changed with the tape speed button.

Will not load (doesn't have power to the loading motors) and has no other indications of power other than those described above.

I'm posting a couple pics to my website..

When you click a link from this page and others it generates a referrer code that the host of the site can read. Yahoo tends to refuse to display linked pix on the first try. If you refresh the page a couple of times it forgets where you came from and displays whatever you'd linked to as if you were within the Yahoo system already.

Just FYI Brenda, I believe a while back there was a discussion on this board over a 300 and 500 that Snaling had switched the faceplates on, and the identifying feature was that the 500 has little legends for frame advance and retard over the Betascan keys, and the 300 does not. Or it was something like that. A quick glance to my Brochure (Posted in Betamax Videographer) shows the 300 to have little betascan legends but nothing else above or on the keys beyond FF/ REW markings.

On the brochure itself are little writings of the dealer and customer; they bring to mind an image of a family and a salesman actually sitting down, maybe in an office, even, and discussing the merits and prices of the various VCRs in the brochure. The markings indicate that they thought seriously about the SL-HF-300 and SL-2710. I'm not sure which they bought, but it's very nice, and quite a change from today's world of buying VCRs for under $100 and being lucky if some salesdroid mills into your general area to attempt to offer advice...

Yeah, I don't think it's Snaling's unit although I do wonder why the label is missing... Speaking of which I have noticed something... the importance of a given label is inversely proprtional to how long it stays around without being picked off. For instance two labels used to align a TV projector on a tabel quickly dissapeared, even though they were marked "Do not remove" and "For TV Projector ALignment", while in the same facility a label has remained on someone's desk, in plain view, as placed by a prankster, instructing someone to "Inflate Earl to 40 P.S.I.".

Not really, monster cable isn't worth it. Go with the cheapest gold plated cables you can get... Up in this neck of the woods there is a place called something lame like "Preferred Distributors" (On route 38 in Tewksburry, if anyone cares, I think Madness is from around here...) and I've seen gold-plated AV cables with RF cable carying the video for about $3. I bought a few... and need still more. Just make sure you get gold-plated and RF for the video... RF is shielded. I've got a couple pieces of REALLY hig-end stuff that came with some other gear I bought (you know how sometimes you buy something with the wires dangling off the back and the guy doens't care, or two things come with connectins) and all three cables are RF instead of just the video... But I've had good results using plain cable for video too. If you must use RF, go with short cables, don't coil up the excess, go with screw on connections not those silly push-ons, and do clean the RF terminal as it can get pretty filthy...

With Monster you mostly pay for better looks of the cable. Plugs have a better grip, the insulator is more flexible, etc. Also you get a better looking packaging. Not that Monster cables are not good, but definately not worth the retail price, considering that the dealer markup is probably more than 50%.

Hey there guys, LTNS eh? But hey, I was given a Sanyo VCR7250 deck. It starts up but immediately eats a tape (of course, I didn't use any important tapes). Is it possible that it needs new loading belts/tires? I don't know much about the Sanyo guts.

Ironic, Madness, I mentioned you a post or two up... Anyhow, I don't know why the Sanyo would do that, but there is a place in Tewksburry that I know still works on Sanyo Betas. In fact they just did a Realistic clone of that model. It is on Route 38 right near that other place I mentioned.

Reading up a bit regard the Brenda's VCR: I own both a 300 and 500 and the main difference is that the latter is a three-head. Take a close look at the top of the headdrum under that "disk" w/ the rubber on it. If there's only one pair of wires on each side going to the heads then it's a 300 (two-head); if there's two pairs on one side and one pair on the other, it's a 500.

Sean: I'll look into the place, but I'd rather repair it myself if it's just a loading tire (my best guess) in need of replacement.

Well does it eat the tapes in the process of threading, or in the process of playing??? If it eats while loading, then I'd guess you're right. If it eats while playing, then I haven't a clue.

Cool! Somebody fired up a pirate FM streo repeater about a mile from my house. He hauls in a satellite feed from his favorite Indiana radio station and is decently sharing it over 20 square miles two time zones from their studio. Kinda dumb though since

(1) he is at sea level in a town full of hills, and

(2) I spotted his rig within 3 hours. It's the house where half the FM band gets crosstalk on my Chrysler radio. And that obvious antenna seems just a bit long for a 2-meter ham.

I also know the sony place is going to be just like the Mazda dealer in terms of price.... :( I want my EDamie running! :( I thought about askin someone @ WOAI to look at it but all they'd have is Betacam expertise. He also said that his EDamie's 'corder is busted (transport GE'd out) but the cammy works. I think mine has been taken apart and messed with before, missing screws and all that. The connector near the microphones (look like S video) is misaligned as if someone hastily put it back together. Viewfinder was sloppily glue together too. Just got laughed at by some lady @ sony. I called their stupid service centre here in TX and she was all like "hhahaha.... they dont even make parts for that anymore...hahaha good luck..." why is it they still make parts for a piddling $1000 Betamie yet they won't make any for a $7000 ED cam?! I think it was busted to begin with because there was a tape in there and it was flashing the "no tape indicator" even though it was fully rewound with indicator tab still in. I extracted the tape manuallyy... it's an ED beta metal tape. damn it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! back on ebay it goes! the weight and size are so nice though. I was tempted to give it a good kick but would have wound up with a broken toe. I'm serious, lol the camcorder is so solid. :(

We just bought an old house from an estate where the owner died. In cleaning out this house today, we found 4 older betamax machines, rewinders, and between 1500 to 2000 betamax movies, all cataloged in betamax storage cabinets. MOST of these are dupes, copies, libraried in chronological order. MANY are original. SOME are still unopened. Is this collection worth anything?Geno in Houston, Texas

Well, Geno, You may have something there... while you're not going to put your kids through college, (as mentioned above) you may find a modest sum in your coffers when you are through. The value could be anywhere from under $100 to close to $500, depending on the state of the tapes and the grade of the machines. First and foremost, what are the machines? Sony HiFis in good shape can bag $60-100 or more depending on model, while old Sanyos in varying states of disrepair will be lucky to find a new home outside the nearest waste container. The tapes will only be of value if they are pre-recorded factory tapes of movies and stuff, or if they are high-grade tapes. New tapes in plastic could fetc $1-3 each, well-indexed, complete programs recored in SuperBeta-HiFi at BI or BII on good tape could get $1 each tape, you'll be lucky to move poorly maintained tapes as blanks.

Well instead of selling the ED_cam, why not buy this and clamp it to the back of the camera? It is the seperate one, right?

the reason I hate that deck is because it looks like the betacam-wannabe penisonique DV cameras that the catholic station around here uses....

I think 200 is too pricey. I dont think I would even pay $50. Number one, the shipping would be rediculous.

I have an (inoperable) SLO-260 witch is the SL-7200 with audio dub, level meter, mic jack and a HD power supply. It's exceedingly heavy, and YES, the shipping did go over the price of the deck right away. I think I paid very little for it, well under $50. Around that time someone else was hawking a similar SL-7200 for a similar rediculous price, but, sadly, I think someone was bidding on it.

Nice collection of Betas. How's the dropout compensation on that SL-HF 600? I was thinking of getting one but the only one I saw around town had a lousy dropout compensator to the point that it didn't seem to exist.

Just a suggestion, you might want to limit the size of picture loaded to maybe 150K each for those people with dial-up. Even with broadband my service gets sluggy trying to load very large pix. Given that the page limits their size anyway, there's no point in wasting your bandwidth allocation (Yahoo Geocites is pretty stingy on that).

I have a Sony SL-2001 that I am using to transfer over some old tapes. It is playing fine, but getting a little cranky about rewinding, and ejecting. By poking around inside, I have figured out what to "help" to let all the tape go off the transport and back into the cassette, but I can't get it to eject. I don't mind doing this by hand to get these tapes transfered, but I just can't figure out how to do it.Any help? Thanks.

Yeah I have the same problem with my Geocities page, which is pretty out of date anyway, but that's the way it goes. If you want to see the full pictures, which are pretty sharp, put their direct location in the address bar. Anyhow, on to the 600, I have one and they do seem a little stingy in the dropout protection area but they are a very nice deck IMHO. It's not like there's a perfect deck.

You weren't too specific about the rewind trouble but it's been my experience that if you're getting a "fishslapping" sound on rewinding that roughening up the upper head drum with fine grit sandpaper - being VERY careful in doing so - will improve rewinding. The procedure I use is to first remove the loading ring end stoppers and the spring assembly/tape retainer (that thingie on the upper drum) - the person who gave me this tip prefers to take off the whole upper drum which I think is much riskier.

Taking extreme care not to damage the heads, I lightly sand the upper drum in the same direction as the tape would go. You then need to clean up the head drum head tips and tape path with a chamois cloth soaked in alcohol to remove the fine metal particles before putting everything back together.

You may need to replace the loading belt if you're having trouble ejecting tapes. I have a bunch of them saved from parts machines if you want one.

How about the SL-HF 750?

For overall best machine? Maybe. Natural three speed record, HiFi, Superbeta, etc. The SL-HF-900 has no BIs, the SL-HF-1000 has some supposed transport issuse (That are personal prefferences, really), the SL-HF-2100 has its unweildy interface and woeful remote, the ED series don't record BI at all and the supposedly have only fair performance with regular tapes...

My SL-HF600 does not seem to have an issue with dropout comp...not any more so than my other units. Beta seems to have more dropout issues overall than VHS, but that's probably because the tapes are older and the technology used to manufacture them wasn't where it is today. The better resolution and color quality are worth it though.

Agreed. Better dropout comp chips are certainly a dime a dozen today, so some thigns have improved. But they cannot and will not overcome the design limitations of VHS. I also believe that these recordable DVDs we see today are a stopgap measure, to go between Videotape and pure memory storage of all manner of information. The sad thing is that it all uses compression nowadays. Full-bandwidth analog is probably a thing of the past, but isnt't that why we're all here?

The SL-2000 has some of the best dropout compensation I've seen in a Beta. I'm continually amazed at how some of even my worst tapes play like new on my SL-2000. If only Sony had made it a HiFi stereo with a decent tuner...

I wonder if I took an SL-2000 to some VCR factory in China they could reverse engineer it. I'm sure with the coming death of VHS they might offer a good price...

Why couldn't I have been a Hilton sister or an Olsen twin...

WOOOO!!! I found a part dissasembled Sony Betamax recorder in my basement!!!! Thing is, the power supply for it and the power socket on the recorder have been chopped off, and I don't know the connections, and I don't know the model number, but it is an old 'Take it out with your camera' Battery powered thing (and the battery connection refuses to work). If I remember correctly, the problem with it (so I'm told) is that when the power is connected it powers up for a millisecond then a relay or something cuts out. Anyone know how to fix it? I'll try to get the model number ASAP.
