Problem is your standards convertor only works one direction, e.g. from SECAM or NTSC TO PAL. There don't seem to be a lot of convertors to go from PAL or SECAM to NTSC. I'm sure there are economic reasons for this, i.e. most of the pre-recorded material is made in NTSC countries (US, Japan, Canada), so manufacturers don't see a market for the convertors (I know personally I would like to have one, even though I have monitors here that will reproduce both NTSC and PAL.

Hmmm... not one store around here still carries SVHS-C blank tapes (perhaps the end of all VHS is merely weeks away). I had to gouge a hole in a plain Fuji tape to trick my JVC SC-amie, since it is not one of those crappy non-HiFi ET mutants that will lay down SVHS on any old tape.

Send me a BMC-1000 and I will never use the term "SC-amie" again. How about "SCAM"?

Your VHS seems to be going into emergency stop mode. This is obviously due to something going wrong mechanically. It is likely to be that idler you re talking about. Your best bet is to take off the top cover and witness what happens.

Hi

Thanks for the reply

it is a 1986 model but hasnt done much work in its life fergusons were built like bricks (no pun intended)

It doesent chew the tape up it stops and when you turn it back on it puts the tape back into the cassette.

How can i identify what the idler looks like on this machine,

To all people looking for betamax tapes. Find out where your local Tv Station or recording station buy there betacam Sp tapes. Order the 30 Min Betacam Sp tape. It have approc 3 hours of tape time in a betamax. As the betamax runs a lot slower than the sp counterpartsTake the tape when you get it and close the breakout tab with some tape. Sony and Maxel still produce the betacam tapes. The sony tape is a metal tape. Works wonderful in bmc100pCamera Briliant playback. I dont know about the maxel tapes, have not tried it yet.

It is a lot better than re-spooling your beta tapes.

You shouldn't be using that Metal Particle tape in your standard recorders... It is only good for ED-Beta machines, Betacam-SP, and maybe some other machines. They're no good to use in anything else like Beta, SuperBeta, EIAJ, or whatever else you may feel compelled to use them in. However, what you can in fact do is use regular Betacam Oxide tapes with no issues.

I have many old family video tapes in Sony Betamax format. I have been told that there is a cartridge that allows betamax tapes to be played on VHS players. Does anyone out there know if such a cartridge is available, what it is called, where it can be purchased and the cost?

Sorry, it's a myth. Just get a Betamax VCR and you'll be happy. Actually, this is a hugely popular myth, come to think of it. I don't know why but it's pervasive. The two systems are 100% incompatible and can never have any kind of interchange. The difference is how the VCR records on the tape, not just the tape shell. The best metaphor I can think of at 0300 local time is that it would be like trying to stuff a long playing record into a CD player.

Sometimes, yes, Jesse. My Dual turntable coupled to my Sony STR-DE-945 playing a new record will sound just as good as the CD player. The problems come in when the usual snackfood-munching data-area-fingering media-abusing consumers get their grubby meathooks on the things, and in that case the CDs usually stand up better, although I've seen some that are pretty bad...

To the fellow who wants to know three-speed beta players... the answer to that question is basically any Sony NOT an SL-6200, SL-7200, SL-8200, SL-8600, SL-3000, SLO-340, SLO-320, SLO-323, or SLO-383.

" and we all know the record sounds better... "

That is, if you enjoy clicks and pops, limited dynamic range, more wow and flutter, rumble in lower frequencies, worse stereo separation and don't mind wearing your records because you actually listen to them.

Or you just bought a turntable / tonearm / cartridge kit that cost you 20 times the money you'd have spent to get the same sound quality out of a CD player.

This is just a matter of taste I guess...

PAL-site has a comprehensive model listing of virtually all Sony PAL Betas at http://www.palsite.com/models.html

Sony never marketed PAL machines to the US with the exception of multisystem units (which were primarily marketed to the Middle East - hence their "ME" suffix). Any PAL VCRs in the US are there as a result of someone bringing one in from Europe.

Multi-system models that handle NTSC PAL & SECAM include; the SL-T7ME, SL-T9ME, SL-T30ME. SL-T50ME, SL-T500ME, SL-T700ME & SL-T700ME MKII and the SL-T800ME

You have my sympathies. Been fighting what seems like Stephen King's "The Stand" virus since the tenth of December or so. Feels like someone wrapped a giant band clamp around me from all the coughing...

If you ever wonder why the dealers want such rediculous prices for Betas check the bid history on this abosolutely nonfunctional (we guarantee it's DOA or your money back) SL-HF 750 that went to 1ziggi1 for $167 bux!!! When you buy from a dealer you're also paying for all the duds he bought to Frankenbeta the dodgy machine he sold you....

Even The Snail himself snapped at this a couple times...

Would anybody have a manual for a Johnichi Torque Gauge? It is pretty basic but I am just curious what the different colours mean.

Does anyone know how to reset or re-align a DVD head. I have two dvd players both are having some type of advance read problem and I'd rather not spen $75 to fix since I could buy one for about the same.

And if that doesn't work check to see if the laser lens is dirty. Or if the little spindle holding the disc has worked itself out of height alignment. Had a CD player that had read problems because the spindle was holding the CD too high above the laser.

Ah yes, the time-tested art of percussive maintenance (Sadly, there exists at least one recent case of this being the official way to deal with a problem, notably bad chip seating the the Apple /// computer...) If the Laser lens is readily accessible when the thing is open, it's not to hard to clean and all it costs is a q-tip and perhaps an ml of rubbing alchohol. Beyond that it's really not worth it unless it's a really snazzy high-end DVD player that you paid a LOT for. (we're forgetting about region-free players that are hard to come by...)

Actually the official Apple service bulletin recommendation was to drop the Apple III from a proscribed height (about an inch or so) onto work bench.

Close enough. The strategic application of a force to the outside case. When it comes right down to it, you're whacking it; not by the force of your hand against it but by gravity's pull of it down towards the earth and some suitable hard surface. It's just a laugh.

I dont think the DVD læser are dirty. maby 9 out off 10 the DVDlæser are not visible when you take the cover off. sure a audiocdplayer could be dirty on the læser! one little story!! on Ebay in Germany a Sony sl-hf950 15years old but never used sold for EURO 1765.- or about $2300.- comparethat amount to maby, 15 hi-fi whs or 30 dvd players or 5 dvd recorder. my conclusion are: somthings very very wrong about todays consumerelectronic.I have repaieret vcr and tv for 20 years or so but!make my own homepage about betamax i can not hmm help please. nice homepage you have Sean, all for now
