I e-mailed him. He changed his auction description. Here's his explanaition:Hello,

The Auto Stereo function from my TV has simulated the function which I described to be stereo and stand corrected. Thank you for bringing this to my attention. The jack in back will send output to both sides, however it is not stereo. I will change the discription accordingly. I feel like I owe you and am deeply gratified for your concern. I also feel that this machine should be capable to record and playback in Hi Fi stereo since it plays Hi Fi stereo through the TV.This will be documented for future reference.

He still leaves open the case for this being capable of stereo recording. Any understand this ?

Olive, you see lot of crap like that on eBay. Most common one's I've seen are info on how to somehow get tons of M$ Software direct for free or real cheap (i.e. Windows XP & Server 2003 w/ a gazillion licenses). Or how to get a laptop or flatscreen monitor for like $100. Garbage like that I've even gotten as spam (one was a site to order XP Pro OEM for $39 [China-pirates anyone?]). I think eBay should be pulling those BS auctions left & right!

The guardian article is a joke. In addition to the fact that he never gets around to supporting his premise, his entire argument is based on a contrived definition of "better" that simply does not apply to anyone to whom this issue has any meaningful value.

Let me put it this way - how often does "sense of humor" and "great personality" genuinely compensate for looking like s/he crawled out of the swamp?

<balloons, confetti, band music> Ding ding ding. An early winner! I think that the 23XX and 24XX models are the most grossly overpriced models on eBay - you can fairly easily get a 300 for less and some (what I think are) better Sanyo models (4650, for example) for far less. That's bad enough, especially because in that price range you have to guess a fairly unsophisticated buyer. This is really gonna confuse 'em.

It's very interesting to look at sellers' items and bidder lists for "betavcrguy," "vintage-motorbikes" and "willijames" - The most obnoxious and open shill bidding you've ever seen - even old video game cartridges that kids buy or people buy for kids. Ebay? Couldn't be less interested.

I have a BMC-550, myself, and have found the only option is to rebuild the old NP-11 batteries. They can be sent off to the one of those battery restorers but the cost is rather high. I actually rebuilt 3 of them several years back using those RadioShack "Replace-A-Cell" sub-C's which, of course, they've long since discontinued. But until those wear out, I can still enjoy my Betamovie on the move. ;)

It's a "minty" BMC-110 "These vintage Beta cams are still much in demand due the high quality of the recorded video image."

Uhhh... maybe you're thinking of 'Betacam' which is a whole other format. Betamovie isn't really in that much of a demand on account of the fact that they're record only units and that there are no batteries being put out for them anymore...

Still for a $10 start and no reserve this isn't a bad unit to go for...

To Elnathan: Man, the only way might be to install another RCA connector for Digital Video Out from video signal pre amplifier output. AFAIK no DV signals are carried thru RCA jacks - for this purpose is used DV connector. Anyhow you should install a lot of PCBs into your deck. Anyhow good luck!

I know this is a bit off the topic, but consider this:

I own a (once-expensive) old Sony EV-C3E Video 8 deck. An experienced technician might be able to break this down:

The output is obviously analogue and the signal produced out the Composite RCA out is a modulated frequency based on how the metal is stored on the magnetic tape. If I played a digital 8 tape in it (spits out noise), the output is STILL a modulated frequency based on how the metal is stored on the magnetic tape, only not in the expected patterns that produce video. If we knew HOW the output is affected by the digital patterns on a digital 8 tape, would it be possible to interpret the RCA out signal (using some kind of software, firmware, hardware) back into digital bits, which in turn could spit out whatever information we wanted? Of course this is difficult because of the way the video signals are modified within the deck circuitry.

In essence, the signal would be going through this:DIGITAL (on D8 tape) -> ANALOG (thru the deck circuitry, noise and crap) -> ANALOG (composite out, noise and crap) -> DIGITAL (hypothetical interpreter and Analog/Digital Converter).

In other words, to allow a Video 8 deck to be converted into a Digital 8 player, without expensive hardware. Just a thought!

For the most part tape is tape and there is not much in the way of 'worth' to them apart from their utility value. That being said, L-750s are marginally worth more because they're longer in length and thus you can get more time out of them.

I remember Dials. My grandparents had sets like that. My parents had a set that I think had dials, but we always had cable TV, and it had the coolest remote ever made. It was a wired remote about the size of a cigar box, and sort of "console shaped". It had a slider, which had a lamp on it that moved back and forth behind about 20 or so indicators for the channels, which included numbers and letters. You could rest the console-thing on the floor and work the slider with your feet. That was luxury at its highest.

Well back in the days when I couldn't afford cable TV and had to use a pair of expandable metal sticks to pull signals out of the air (paraphrasing from this ad for a cheapo set of rabbit-ears that made itself seem like something pulled off the space shuttle) I found that the reception was slightly better on channel 4.

It didn't help that the TV set I had had been tuned to channel 3 so long that every once in a while it would loose the signal and you had to get up, change the dial (remember TV 'dials'?) around and turn it back to 3 to get it back to normal;.

Well by me they don't seem to care, there are stations on 3 and 4. Just another reason to use the AV inputs for all important transactions. Back in the old days of the VTR/VCR when the RF unit was a commodity, they came in channels ranging from 2 through 6. I think there are stations on ALL of those, though... in my area, at least.

To Bill;

Audio and Video out on the Beta machine go to the Audio and Video in on the VHS machine. If the VHS machine doesn't automatically switch to A/V in when you put plugs in those jacks set the machine to A/V in.

If there are two A/V ins set to whichever one you've plugged the Beta's output into - A/V 1 is usually the back of the machine and A/V 2 usually is the plug set in front.

The VHS machine's Audio and Video output then go to the TV's A/V in jacks. Set the TV to A/V in (if your TV has front and back input set to the proper input).

If your TV only has antennae (RF) input then you hook the Antennae (RF) output of the TV to the TV's antennae jack. Turn the TV to channel 3 or 4 (most RF converters on VCRs are set to channel 3 but sometimes they get set to 4 either by accident or because there's a station on channel 3 or some other reason.)

In both cases check to see if the Beta VCR's playback is passing through to the TV set before attempting a recording on VHS. If not recheck connections.

Probably but you'll find it starving for light unless you point a spot at your face. Very, very few cameras of considerable vintage are any good in that type of lighting situation. Trust me. I've tried bunches of 'em as computer capture cams. Contrary to what you might believe, home video cameras are generally the most light-sensitive cameras available that are suited to general use. They have to work in people's living rooms, litchens, bedrooms, wherever; and make acceptable images. Professional TV cameras are the worst. It takes every light in a given room before my JVC KY-2000 stops sraving for light, even with 12db boost! Nive try, but no.

To Scott... Try turning the SuperBeta switch off (if the tapes you're playing aren't SuperBeta recordings) . Also check to see if the MPX filter is set to 'PCM'. Either way would mean the drop-out compensator has been turned off. Of the settings having the MPX filter set to 'PCM' will definately turn of the dropout compensator. Turn that to full off - the green setting.

I checked with my local Customs office and there is no need to give the shipper your Social Security # to have a package shipped from Canada. If an SS# is ever needed the Customs office will contact you directly. I wonder how many SS#s he's harvested already? Going from the date posted, he's had that notice up on his auctions at least since last August.

There has been a regulation in effect at the Post Office that requires you to personally sign for international packages but again you don't need to show ID if you're getting them from then postal carrier - just if you pick up at the Post Office.

So buyer beware, Now they're trying to get your personal info...

Another case for believing the VCR and not the box it came in (or the manual you found it with)...

A beautiful 'wood sided' Stereo HiFi SL-5400 the hoser thinks is an SL-HF 300...

Is common sense really all that common anymore?

Hmmmm looks like an ordinary eBay for an SL-HFR 70 but in the shipping info it sound like an identity theft scam is going on...

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2983304100

Apparently US Customs wants Social Security or Taxc ID numbers for incoming packages. Can anyone confirm this cuz this smells like another Canadian scam..

I have the Radio Shack's "Faxback" documents on the Model 20 loaded here...

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/TheBetamaxVideographer/files/model_20_man.zip

Sounds like you have a belt and tire problem with that. The Model 20 was built by Sanyo and can take Sanyo replacement parts

Studiosound Electronics has the 'tuneup kit' you'll need.

http://www.iglou.com/studiosound/betatune.htm

Includes several idler tire and belt replacement options.

Other than that a very strong power surge put it in or it was already in such a marginal shape the minor electronic stress of being unplugged and moved finished it off.

You've ruled out that the outlet is working or is no good. Or that where you have the VCR sitting it's sitting level on it's feet and the bottom or top panels aren't being shorted by being flexxed onto inner circuitry...

Does anybody have any idea what might cause a VCR to go totally dead OTHER than the fuse? I moved my SLV-R5UC, which was working fine, to a new location to dub a tape, and when I plugged in it nothing happened. The display doesn't even light up. The fuse in the power supply is intact.

Does anyone know about the Quad Electrostatic Loudspeakers and if anyone is still buying these things? We have 4 of the speakers and 3 Quad amps (two we know work) and all the tubes, some still in the original boxes and all the manuals and the wiring needed for them. We are searching his house for the Quad FM Stereo Tuner.

I have just received a BMC-200P, in immaculate condition. It looks like it has never been used, not a scratch on it! BUT, there is always a but, it doesn't have a powersupply/charger. Anybody got a spare one kickin' round? If you have one you'd like to part with, please send me an email, just remove all numbers out of the address. Happy to pay anything reasonable.

Thanks, Roderick

Why yes, I happen to have a complete case of Beta-to-VHS adapters, right next to my case of flux capacitors and my mason jar full of dilithium. Ha ha the adapters do not exist. It would be like trying to play a CD on a record player, to make it easy to understand.

You will have to but a new VCR. If the tapes are regular Beta, (not SuperBeta or HiFi) then any ordinary Sony will handle them. If you have SuperBeta (especially BIs) and HiFi then you will have to find a deck that can handle them. If you are in a non-NTSC local then speed is not an issue. Try Ebay. There is an Ebay site for most global areas. http://www.ebay.com/ is the main page, with links to the international sites. Good luck.

It's not like you can redeem Betamaxes at the store or anything but you have some pretty primo stuff....

This is a listijng of the last few weeks sold Betas on eBay...

http://search-completed.ebay.com/search/search.dll?GetResult&SortProperty=MetaHighestPriceSort&query=%28beta%2Cbetamax%2Cbetamovie%2Cbetacord%2Cbetavision%29&ebaytag1=ebayreg&ht=1&maxRecordsPerPage=100&category0=293&combine=y&st=0

Should fetch a nice price on eBay but you might want to avoid selling to dealers as they'll turn around and sell your beta for double or triple what they paid you. You might also want to release them one at a time instead of flooding the market.

I'd love to give a home to one of those SL-HF 750s, SL-HF 2100s or SL-HF 2000s. What would you want with shipping to the 12309 zip code?

Hi, I dont collect Beta at all...but my great uncle did. He has recently passed away and now we are stuck with his massive beta collection. We have over 16 working vcr's possibly 10 more that we still need to test and a beta processor thingy...sony avu stuff...laser disk stuff... from what weve counted so far over 1000 new and used videostore beta movies... over 1500 cassettes that have been recorded by him. Does anyone want used tapes we have bags and bags of them? And there are the rest im guessing 800 -1200 more we still are sorting through. Not to mention all the un-opened brand new blank cassettes in their boxes. Is there any demand for these things anymore? The most advanced looking vcrs he has are SL-HF2100's and SL-HF2000's then there all the rest....mostly sony betamax machines. Im going to put most of this stuff on Ebay and see what happens, but If anyone knows of a beta collector that wants some of this stuff, that would be great. Our family has no use for anything beta.
