I own a Philips Magnovox "classic" webtv. I want to know your suggestions about upgrading to one of the RCA RM 2200/2100 boxes or waiting for the "new" box. What will any of these do that my webtv classic won t do? Play live radio better--more stations? Play live TV from around the world better? Live web cams? Please write to me at [email protected] or at [email protected] since my question is not beta related for this group. Thanks

He's got a lot of rare units and he does seem to be charging for rarity as if people collect these like baseball cards... I know that I want my units because they are viable pieces of technology. My Japanese unit was actually bought at a fair price for such a unit, and its rarity is only secondary to its functionality, yet he charges $ 800 for player-only Betas... As P.T. Barnum said, "there's a damn fool born every minute..."

That is beyond the pale. Well I remember a looong time ago we saw him sniping after that EDV-5000. Now we know what became of it. You can buy an EDV-9500 for MUCH less than he offers a 5000 for. Meh. I don't think he'll do any business. Is "Absolute Beta" still around? I think they may have have had an actual store, I'm not sure. Anyone know?

Hi I got this Beta Spins out very fast when I plug the AC cord in Reverse Polarity (though there's no polarity in AC) some kind of current leakage phenomenon got into. I'd change the noise filter condenser on the Transformer unit, the condenser in SysCon block, the Cmos N some transistor; works out well for the time manner, but when I reverse the "polarity" of the AC cord it went nuts. Dont tell me that the Chip FckdUp.No such leakage Beetwen the primary and the secondary winding.Thank God it's Friday.....

If not mistkn, there's a small POT will adjust the Strenghten of the Tape when played.[Tape wont play if too stickyy on Head]One Bobbin slightly hold Capstan Bobbin(works clearly when in Stepping mode)There's lot's of sensors that control the Movement. One or another should work accordingly and all of carry out by the SysCon Chip. All of the motor in Mechanism deck are stepper motor wich actually works like a clock ticking but in a very fast sequence. With only one sequence fail then the whole operations will be wrong, picture just like flowcharting.__________________________________________________________________________________________My simple opinion is just check the condenser in the RotaryHead then goes to the HallEffect Sensing, Motor controller chipset, another component related.

Re: David Adams message(s);

In regards to your Sony Betamax machine with a non spinning video head-

You were correct to try cleaning the Hall effect devise on the head motor assembly. The jitter that the head does indicates the usual problem that occurs with the motor. Cleaning off the glue only fixes 2 out of 10 machines.

I have had to switch out the motor assembly on many machines. I salvage heads from cheap mono machines for this purpose.

Hope this helps

Sorry folks, I forgot to mention that the heads/drum do actually "judder" when play is pressed, but then lock themselves still (must be the magnets I guess). So it looks like there is some sort of power getting there (maybe).

Hi Everyone,Having read through this much of this forum, I have a glimmer of hope that someone out there can help me with a fix for my non-working Sony SLC-30UB. Basically, it was working fine until last week when it suddenly began to just STOP after about 5 seconds. This occurred in play, ff and rewind modes. On looking inside, I discovered that the head did not spin when I pressed play. The tape was fully loaded around the drum, etc, and the tape actually moved forward, BUT THE HEAD DID NOT SPIN. I have looked everywhere for help and have done a couple of adjustments.... these include removing the glue from the hall effect device and adjusting the tape/cassette position (in case it was a microswitch). But still no luck. Unfortumately the machine I keep for spares has the same problem, so I can't take the parts from that - but first of all I need to know what is wrong.

Can anyone help please ?? If so, would you explain exactly which part is which and where it is in very non techy terms please..... Thanks.

Hello Folks, hope someone can help me out. I've got some Betamax PAL tapes that I would like to get the audio only out of and onto cassettes. Hello everyone. I've had my SLHF-400 for a month in a half now and enjoy it very much. I have especially liked going through the tapes that came with it, and have had a few surprises in addition to the moovies on there. This mainly has been MTV recordings that include music recorded back when they played strictly music videos through the mid 80's, mostly in 1985 and 1986. Prior to getting my 400 I had a tape that was recorded from WKBD TV-50 in Detroit of me when I was a baby on Detroit Today which was recorded in 1977. I enjoyed watching the commercials that were on TV when I was a baby and am happy to say that this tape works great. I am currently looking for any tapes recorded from TV from the mid 70s through about 1985, which is when my tapes that I have now were recorded at the earliest, though it may be 1986, as I am not sure when the previous owner to my machine got it. I am hoping to find stuff recorded down in the Detroit area, but if it is national TV I guess it won't matter much. I am also looking for any technical help with some switches on my SLHF-400. I am concerned with the switches in the little compartment on the bottom of the front of the machine. Any help with this would be great, and thanks in advance.

Nothing but an ED machine should ever have any business touching ED tape. It wears the heads out very quickly. I know you can use S-VHS tape the other way 'round, though. In fact if you use a good quality VHS tape you can even drill the shell and record S-VHS. I know from a while back someone tried using a regular tape to record ED-Beta and it didn't work.

ok. Partially answered my own question.

Here goes. First, I voided my warrenty(HA!) by removing the two screws from the back of the vtr unit. Next, carefully, removed the top plastic shell. Put in a tape and looked.

What I found was that the tape extractor mechanism was sticking, and that with a little push, I could get a tape to load, also allowing the rew, play,f.fwd and rec buttons to work. The first time i tried it, the tape ejected, but some of the media was left dangling. After cycling the mechanism a few times, I'm getting clean ejects w/o tape dangle. The mechnism still requires a nudge, but I can work around this for now until i backup the family video tapes to dvd/harddrive. After that, I'll apply my FINAL SOLUTION.

Appearently i've spent too much time in front of my PC/macs and not enough time with reel to reel and cars. My conclusion is tha **!!** THE GREASE HAS HARDENED**!!**just like any oil or grease, it had a life span. Now, it's nolonger any good. so it'll be a matter of dissassembly(Anyone have schematics incase I forget where everything goes?), cleaning, and regreasing(with a dielectric I think), followed by reassembly and testing.I'll probably replace those darn belts too while i'm at it.

Hope someone can benifit from my ignorance/brilliance. And watch out for those Caps. Likely you won't touch them, but be cautious just in case, and make sure to UNPLUG before doing any of this.

4track reel-2-reel, and betamax kick tapes and vhs anyday. Long live LPs.Eric

I just purchased a Sony SL-3000 unit with the tuner.Tuner works Great when plugged into my 27" composit color monitor.

Here's my problem though.

When I put a tape in the deck and close it, the tape tensions fine. But when I try and press rew, play, f.fwd or record, something mechanical prevents me fromdepressing the lever. Having no manual and not wanting to pay the $650 to have a shoplook at it and repair it(mabey) What are my options?

Does anyone know how to work the darn thing? should I look for small toys jamming things up?I really would like to get this one running as my "better" sony crapped out it's playback mode years ago.

My only thought is that there might be one of those silly switches that stop things, like the ones that keep me from food processing without the bowl fully latched in. Does my machine have one of these? can i jury-rig it?

Please help a nintendo generation guy relive his EARLY youth with a WORKING beta. Thanks in advanced.

You'd be better off using conductive paint...

This division of Replacement Remotes.com sells the conductive paint you'll need...

They want $23 bux for a little jar of the stuff but they throw in shipping and it's a neater solution than glueing bits of tinfoil to the pads.

If you're going to transfer to DVD don't bother switching to VHS first cuz you'll loose a lot of data in the process. Look in the yellow pages for video transfer services. Almost all the DVD transfer services keep a Beta VCR on hand.

Make sure you get a sample DVD from the person doing them in order to see if your player will take to it - there's a lotta incompatibilities out there.

Your price range will most likely get you a good Sony Superßeta hi-fi deck such as the SL-HF400, 450, 550 and 600, and may get you a high-end deck like an SL-HF750 or 900. These Superßeta hi-fi units are the best way to ensure playback compatibility with all ßeta tapes, since they can play all three speeds, plus they can play back Superßeta and ßeta hi-fi recordings in full quality. Other brands (Sanyo, Sears, NEC, Toshiba, etc) put out some nice decks but ßI playback compatibility is always a question with a non-Sony machine.

Hello, I have home videos that were recorded on a Sears Beta/camcorder circa 1981. Seems that some of the tapes might have been recorded at different speeds (Beta I/II/III?). Our original Beta is long gone. I've been hunting e-bay and other sites, but what would be the BEST used Beta I can get that offers the BEST PICTURE AND SOUND QUALITY (Superbeta? Hi-fi? 4-head?) for the money (my guess-timate budget is around $300). I appreciate any help anyone can give. My goal is to transfer the tapes to mini-DV.thanks,Mario.

Addition:

DVD-rw that were recorded by computer software may affect/rejected by DVD player, use most common software and high quality Blank Disc for compatibilty. There's new format BlankDisc recently in the market ,that's the DVD+.Needs special/dual format Minus and Plus Recorder to Burn; And Read (some kind of Samsung DVD player can do read DVD+.Major previous Player cannot accept DVD+.If you have the DVD - & + burner ,there shouldnt be difficulties to Transfer your Beta movies

There's some limitations on DVD player, certain movies can't be played on some DVD player. Several DVD disc have MacroVision Protection wich some Player can't pass. You'll have to enter special code by remote controller to remove the protection, this due to certain player and the code may vary. Chinese clone DVD Player is a good coiche it can even play scratch disc.E.g Shinco DVD player can be updated by means of (bios/EEprom) inside the player. You'll have to download the file from the manufacturer and write them into CD-R platter to do so.

Don't try this if you're not sure ,it'll go to Wards Home to rest in peace.

I question whether DVD is "once and for all". A friend has made some DVDs for me and maybe half play on my DVD players. The latest doesn't play on ANY of my 3 DVD players.

I have Digital Beta wich is similar to HF860D (HF95D PnP version), Tapes that were recorded with Digital Beta may produced glittering pic when played on analog.Even HiFi Beta may differ on result though you used same type of machine.I suggest try it on Analog Beta.Eg SL800ME, C7 ,C9, or HF77. Rewind old tapes in Rewinder several times, if possible Fowards it.This helps clean dirt/dust.

Tracking Issue: Over the years, I've managed to accumulate quite the beta tape library, using them to record my favorite tv series (mostly 1960's shows). Because its been a process lasting over 20 years, I've gone through 7 or 8 beta machines. Because of this, some of my tapes do not work in my latest machine. The problem is this.. If I fast forward scan, the picture is perfectly clear. When I press play, nothing. No picture, no sound, the tape counter doesnt even move. This is most distressing because some of my favorite episodes are on tapes with this issue.

Is this something that can be fixed? If not with my present machine which is a Sony HF 860D, what about another? My hope is to transfer these tapes to DVD once and for all.

Please email me with suggestions..

Much obliged,[email protected]

Bobby the you should be able to figure out what the "alb" is by figuring out the "nycap" part - as in "New York CAPital"

Betacam is a high-speed high-quality professional componant (R-G-B) video format. Betamax is a slower speed consumer-quality composite format. An L-750 tape will record for up to 4 1/2 hrs on a Betamax deck whereas the same tape will only record for 30 minutes on a Betacam machine.

_@_oo - YAYYYYYYYYY! My SL-HF 750 FINALLY arrived and IT WORKS!!!!!!! Mongo at the post office must've dropped it though cuz there were large dents ant the loading motor was out of whack but I got that sorted out OK. Had to tweak it a bit to get tapes tracking OK but it records well enough in ALL 3 SPEEDS!!!!

_@_oo - I love how it hands your tape back to you when you press eject! Sweet Beta-ey goodness!

_@_oo - probably gonna want to have it check by our area's Beta tech just to make sure it's 100% OK.

Please excuse my ignorance and therefore what must seem to you all as silly questions: What is the difference between betacam and betamax? Are the cassette shells of each identical? Apart from labeling, is there an easy method to tell one format from another?

I am a tape librarian/archivist presently working on a collection of both audio and video tapes, and my work experience heretofore has been largely in the professional audio and music business. Any help you might provide would be greatly appreciated! yours, Joey Helguera

Hello,

I sorted out the dodgy video on the SL 5200, as an audio guy I didn't take into account the channel 3/4 switch may have been set differently than my other VCR [slaps head]. The sound and picture dips periodically [at the rate of about once a second] and having peeked within the unit i notice a scalloping on the edge of tape that may synchronize with the modulation of video and audio. So perhaps the use of a new tape will resolve my prior set of problems.

I've a new problem however, in that the machine seems to be in love with the tape and attempting to eject is followed with a spooling of tape, clicks and whirs, but the tape remains laced.

Ideas? Also, if there is an electronic file of service information for this unit I would greatly appreciate it.

Regards,Curtis

Oh that's rich...

On the Modern Marvels they're running a special on failed inventions. In talking about the failure of Poloroid's "Polavision" instant movie camera system they noted that it was introduced just before Sony introduced it's VHS VCR format.
