Hello... after a long search i finally got me the BEtamax SL-HF950. now that i got it, seems that the drum is not rotating. I do repairs at TV, VHS recorders, DVD, ... But i never ever worked on a Betamax... i payed the thing pretty much. does someone know what to do? the motor is not stuck or anything, when i rotate it with my hand, it turns around freely... please, any help is very much appriciated.

I have a question regarding Beta tapes.I am considering getting a new Betamax VCR to play old tapes I have, originally recorded in Europe. In particular, the tapes I have were recorded using a SL-HF100E. Can I play these on a UK Betamax model, such as a SL-HF100UB?

Basically, the European recording standard is PAL B/G which is slightly different from the PAL I system used here in the UK. Does anyone know if there is a multi-standard Beta?

Just a note to anyone trying to use a SL-HF350 for micro-fine editing; NOT A GOOD IDEA! I recently bought a SL-HF350 from somebody across town. To test the 350's capabilities, I did a couple of hours' editing from a S-VHS master deck onto the 350. The results were ugly, messed-up, glitched-out crappy edit points and transitions (almost as bad as a consumer VHS deck). The bottom line on a SL-HF350 is that it is a nice unit to playback tapes and movies, and to use as a deck to dub movies, but it is a model to avoid if you want to do serious micro-fine editing onto beta tape; I'll stick with my SL-HF450 and SL-HF650 when it comes to that task. There are still good deals to be had was talking to a guy I know in KC last weekend and he was telling me how he was at a garage sale and they had a box of 300 mvies which they wanted $20 for. A lot of them were films he ahd not seen but was interested in seeing but did not want to get them since theyw ere all beta ones. He mentioned that to the woman there and she said OK we'll through in our Beta VCR anso he wound up with 300 prerecorded tapes plus a few homemade ones and a VCR which turned out to be a Sl HF 900.

I could be funny and suggest that they're worthless and you should leave them next to the skip (after hurrying over to the skip in waiting for the cornucopia of Beta goodness soon to arrive) but actually they do bring in a fair price on eBay. I don't watch the UK market well enough to quote you a price but $ 30 to $120 US is what the American equivelents (SL-2000/TT-2000 & HVC-2200) go for over here in the US. You'll probably do a little better in the UK.

I wonder if per-capita Beta has a better following in the US or in UK/Europe markets?

Anyone,Help? BMC-550 won't record!!!

I love BETA, and have had machines since the 80's, including just getting a SLHF-1000 this year. So the next logical step was a Camcorder. So, I just got a BMC-550 Camcorder, that is physically in great shape, but I can't get it to record. I also have no user manual. The NP-11 battery is dead, of course, but I connected a good 9.6 voltage source to the DC input plug. When turned on, the camcorder display works, and the tape can eject, and the slack is taken up when a tape is inserted, and the zoom drive works. It just doesn't record and the tape doesn't turn. The "record" light in front and a "T" in the viewfinder come on briefly when the record button is pressed, then they quickly go out.

Does this machine need a charged battery even when plugged into an external power source?( I plan to cut open the old NP-11 and put new batteries in the case, if the machine isn't just plain shot- I would like to first get the machine working to make sure more expense is worthwhile)Is there a fuse somewhere that might be blown? Any other hints about why it won't record? Also, anyone have a manual they would agree to copy and send to me- I will pay for this.

Appreciate any help I can get- I'm really in the dark without a manual.

SL-HF900 issue..findings...Thanks for all of the feedback. I thought that my problem was something minor. I was testing this SL-HF900 yesterday for the first time. I picked it up for $ 200. It is I would say a '9'. Really nice condition. Anyway, I had the line audio and video outs from a VHS VCR connected to the Line ins on the Betamax. While either monitoring the video [from a commercial VHS tape] through the betamax, or recording it, the picture was showing the described light to dark issues every few seconds. I then, based on advise from some people who saw and read my original post, connected my cable box to the betamax [RF cable] to see if I would get the same results. It turns out that IT WAS the copy [Macrovision] protection. The video from the cable converter was fine. I was wondering if it is possible that some cable systems [Time Warner here in NYC] apply copy protection to some cable broadcasts as well, for example pay per view movies, etc?

PTFigg, what input is doing the light/dark/light? Most DVD players cannot be passed straight through a vcr (either format) without doing weird things like that due to Macrovision's frustrating anti-copy protection. In other words, if you are trying to use the SL-HF900 as a pass-thru from a studio-released DVD to the TV, it probably will not work.

In this case if the pic goes like a candlelight in the win while in monitoring state the problem might've been in the Color process block/Intermediate Frequency(dont do adjusting if not sure what).

I have a Sony SL HF900 Betamax. [purchased recently]. When video is recorded or just plain monitored through the Betamax, coming in from RF or line video inputs, the video goes bright to dark every few seconds, just as if I was adjusting the brighthness control from low to high.This continues to cycle every few seconds. I know it is not the source component, or the monitor due to the fact that if I bypass the Betamax, and just connect the source component to the monitor, everything looks fine. It is obviuosly not the heads based on the fact that just plain monitored video coming into the machine yields the same results. Do you have any idea as to what the problem is? By the way I was able to frankenbeta two busted SL-HF 300s I picked up from someone off this page into one working unit. One of the tapes I tested this with is a BIS recording from off my SL-HF 750 (which I haven't had tuned yet). An SL-HF 300 WILL play BIS recordings!!!

I personally HATE modern cell phone designs. They are awash with un-neccessary lamps and so on... Also, the continue to get smaller to the point of literal unusability. A friend of mine has a cell phone with two functions duplexed onto the top and bottom of each keycap, so you have to press the specific end of a specific keycap. This is a challenge for me, even with my other-worldly fingernails... (I don't cut 'em 'cause I don't care :-) I seriously think some modern technology was not designed to actually be used, but rather to simply be looked at and make people envious. "Look, I have a cell phone so tiny I can cram it into any body cavity you like! No, it doesn't do anything, but if you call me on it it lights up like a Christmas tree and plays "Smoke on the Water"!" Not only this but the same phones have an 8-bit color screen (At least, a camera, a flashlight, email, messages, paging, AOHell Instant messanger, and a GUI that puts a Mac Classic to shame. WTF? It's a telephone! All I want it to do is send and recieve calls! And be big enough to use without special implements. Kinda like my Betamax. Form Used to follow function. Anyone here ever USE an SL-HF-2100??? I understand it's actually not easy....

Holy Crap! Was watching one of those "lost another loan to Ditech" commercials and I noticed in the one where the harried loan officer was switching channels everytime a Ditech ad came that he has an SL-2400 Beta VCR sitting on his living room TV set!

Sony GCS-50 that I picked up on ebay has all kinds of problems. Mainly, after recording some dubbed video from VHS, it plays back two seconds of audio and video, and then goes silent and all I see is snow. 2 seconds on, 2 seconds off...and it continues to cycle this way. I cleaned the heads internally [have done this many times before on other machines], but to no avail. By the way during record monitoring, the audio is constant and sounds fine through the machine.

I got the V3000 last year but not in working order (NTSC). I havent done much with it.The're 2 version NTSC and PAL.If you have AV Processor simply plug in the Unit via RCA connector.The new one cost approx 1000U$I havent found where the problem is,Front panel chipset is OK,the static memory works fine.Lots of CX1111 sony chipset inside,almost on every board.I guess no one could do much help here.

"Digital" Betas are no different in regular playback than any other Beta. The signal is straight analog. The digital portion only comes into play for special effects, freeze frame and fast scanning.

From your description, I would say that the shop did not align the 870 properly.

Digital Beta much more sensitive than those Analog family.Have you clean the HeadDrum (use nonresidual cleaner/CarbonDioxide CO2),sometimes old tapes causes many problem to the head.Try with new tapes,if problem persist go to repairing / Tuning steps.Usually there's nothing to be align if the Disk Assy/Rotary Head is still in good shape.Some electronics knowledge require if U wanna do Tuning work,otherwise dont do anything to the machine or you'll loose both A/V.We need more technical detailed explanation to help.

I have a Sony HF870D in pristine condition. I bought it new many years ago and have treated it with kid gloves ever since. My problem is this: A few years ago it stopped displaying video but I still got the audio signal. I took it to a local authorized Sony dealer for repair. When they called me back for authorization for repair, they explained that they needed to re-align the heads and that there was a possibility that any tapes already recorded on the machine might not replay properly anymore. At that point I wasn't getting any video signal anyway so I figured I had nothing to lose by having them do the repair. When I got it home I popped a tape in and to my delight it played (video and audio) just fine...for about three minutes. Then the screen went blank. No picture, no audio. Nothing. Just as they had warned me might happen. I got so frustrated that I just packed the machine back up in the original box and have had it in safe storage ever since. Then I found this site and figured I would toss out my dilemma to anyone who might have an idea as to why the tapes would no longer play. I can't imagine it has anything to do with the fact that the tapes were recorded on that machine because a lot of them weren't. Before I got the Sony I had an NEC 4-head machine and the tapes I recorded on it played just fine on the Sony and those recorded on the Sony played just fine on the NEC. How could a re-alignment of the heads result in the loss of the ability to play previously recorded tapes? If I could go out today and buy a brand new Beta (I know, dream on) I'm sure the tapes would play just fine in it and they obviously wouldn't have been recorded on THAT machine. Just as you can rent a video and play it in a series of any number of totally unrelated VCRs and it will give you a signal in each and every one. Anyway, at this point I no longer do much recording anyway so it really isn't that much of a concern. What bothers me is all the tapes I already have and all the stuff I'll never get to see again. It just seems such a waste. If anyone has had a similar experience concerning no longer viewable tapes and was able to resolve the situation (short of buying or renting a machine) I would appreciate your comments and responses here.

I have an old Sony SL-2305 machine and am trying to copy some old tapes to newer formats. Video is fine, but I can't seem to resurrect any audio. Any suggestions? (Even have the old operating instructions. No help.)

Sounds like an Asian model not released over here. There were several player only SuperBeta VCR models put out by Sony after the Koreans started releasing player-only VHS units in the mid-80s.

It's a Beta I supposed.

If succeeded I'm having it today...I ask a friend it's only a player with no record function. Hope nothing go wrong.
