To Anyone who loves beta!

I'm interested in ANY Free Betamax machine! I collect them for their great video quality and fun features! If there are any of you who are willing someday to give away PARTS DECKS, (Even ones with 90% of their parts missing) broken decks or working decks, who are U.S. residents, to send email to [email protected]

I fix any beta with your help, by the way, my SL-HF500 is good at rewinding and fast-forwarding, but the drum only spins on those modes, including speed search! The play doesn't turn either the capstan or drum motor!! Any help??? Thanx!

Yes people there was such a device to adapt your beta tapes and it even came with a saw so you can split the beta shell in half so it can fit in a VHS shell.

There was also this breakthrough device called a screwdriver which you can use to open up both a VHS and beta tape shell and wind up the beta tape unto the VHS reels. The only problem being no picture and extremely distorted sound. But hey you could record over them !

But the best conversion device out there was the quite fantastic Betamax VCR. This one was to be hooked up to your VHS unit through the line inputs therefore inducing NO MECHANICAL WEAR AT ALL to your VHS unit. Wasn't that wonderful ??

I have a Betamax VCR for sale. It's a Toshiba VM-41 (NTSC) cable ready, front-loader, mono (though it can play HiFi tape without the interference problems other mono beta VCRs have) VCR. As for that adapter thingie I'm pretty sur the correspondents ahead of you are "giving you the business", the only adapter for VHS tmachines is one that holds VHS-C (compact) tapes. I'm asking $100 US, but that price includes the cost of shipping within my UPS delivery zone (Northestern USA).

As for that adapter thingie people are discussing I'm pretty sure that the only adapter for VHS machines or any machine, is one that holds VHS-C (compact) tapes.

Yet again, a 3rd and plaintive plea - surely somebody with more technical knowledge than I have has investigated obtaining separate Y/C output from a Super Beta machine - specifically an SLHF950. If it can be done, just as composite Super Beta is at at least subjectively almost as high-resolution as S-VHS, a Y/C output into an S-VHS monitor would surely be far, far better.

Please help!

FOR SALE TO BETAHOLIC ! (UK)

Hello all!

I have a Betamax SL C9 UB for sale. It's a great recorder and works fine, and has the remote and original box. I also have about 20 tapes (all blank). It still records and plays back perfectly but slow mo is a bit jittery. It's got stereo, dolby, indexing, reverse play etc, etc.

If you'd like to save it being bought by a VHS Heathen at a car boot sale or suchlike, EMail me. I am based in Hampshire, England but work in London so could drop it in to a fan.

Emailing me is best as I don't often return here.Bosh

Hi all, I own a Sony SL-C9 & a SLHF100. I have a problem with the SLHF100, the peak level meter display has lost some segments. Sony Australia have discontinued the replacements and I was wondering if they are still available in the U.K. I believe that another company manufactures the units because they are also used in the Fostex X-15 Multitracker 4-track recorders.

Best regards ..Tom.

Message for Tom, Re: SLHF100 level meters. I have the same problem with missing segments. Unfortunately they are no longer available here either, according to Charles Hyde & Sons, who are the appointed Sony spares distributors in the UK. The main thing is that it has no detrimental effect on the operation of the machine.

For those of you wondering if the Beta format is still alive czech out the following E-mail message and response from SONY online:

MESSAGE:Product Category 1: VCRProduct Category 2: Model Name: SLHF-2000 Betamax

Wanted to find out if the SLHF-2000 was still being made or if it's still available. There's no mention of it on your website and can't be found with your search engine. There are still Beta enthusiast out therewho might still be pursuaded to buy new if you're willing to meet them halfway ;o)RESPONSE:Thank you for contacting SONY.

The Sony SL-HF2000 SuperBeta HiFi Stereo VCR is a current item, although because of a high demand may be in short supply.

The suggested retail price for one of those puppies is about $1000and by many Beta afficianado's reckoning isn't that great a VCR with middling performance and a surprisingly short head life. And it's an NTSC only. :o(

Regarding the Sony SL HF-2000 I would not really consider it an available item. I purchased one several years ago off the shelf for a friend in the UK for $679. When one of my SL HF 900s died last year and the parts needed to fix it were not avaialble I dedcided to get a 2000. The place that had them on the shelfd does not have them anymore and I was told that IF I wanted one then the price was now $799, I would have to specail order it put 1/2 the money down and be prepared to wait 8-10 months to get one. Guess they are like babies or something. Was also told that they had about 8 people on the list ahead of me who had paid their money and were waiting! Tried several other places and no one had them although a few said they could special order one. One place would only do it IF I brought in my old non working Betamax to show that I needed one as a replacement. Was told this was the type of thing Sony was having palces do for people who wanted reel to reel tape decks before they phased them out and they were selling off their back stock.

Well it looks like I may have already sold my Toshiba Betamax. Still waiting for the check. I have an HFP -200 HiFi Processor Unit that hooks into the back of the SL-HFR "HiFi Ready" Series of NTSC Sony Betamaxes. It's missing a few buttons but it works fine. If anyone has an SLH-FR VCR but never got around to buying the HiFi upgrade or if your processor is burt out, this migth be for you. Only $50 + shipping. The manual survived and is included with the unit. If you have the HFP-100 you might want to consider buying this unit and transfering the missing buttons as this unit will allow you the recieve stereo broadcast and the SAP channel.(the HFP-100 doesn't)

I have noticed a few messages regarding Sony producing a new Betamax machine. This would be great and I am sure they would sell a large number. If an average 950 now fetches upto £550 there is obviously a demand for a quality deck. C9s etc are good decks but once you have a hifi player its hard to go back to mono or linear (useless) stereo). How do we put pressure on a company like SONY. Any ideas.

Hello all! I had a small problem today. I was charging my camcorder batteries in my BC-300, and suddenly heard a loud pop come from the charger, followed by a puff of smoke from the air vents. I immediately unplugged it, and took the batteries out. Was this a result of overcharging? Is overcharging possible with the NP-11s? Did I blow something out in the charger? The only fuse I saw was the fuse where the power cord enters the charger. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hi, I am trying to resurect a sony SL-C7. The main problem seems to be no capstan sync.I've tried replacing the 2.2 uf tantulums as sugggested in http://www.palsite.info/slc7tech.html but made no difference.Adjusting the capstan free speed alters the rate at which an otherwise good picture fades in and out.Freezing variuos components makes no difference. The belts seem to be just about ok.The next step would be to substitute various IC's or get a repair manual and prod around with my oscilloscope.Does any body know if it would be viable to sort this out?or what signals I should expect to see at the test points.

Many thanks Colin.

Hi,please forgive my ignorance or naiveness if this questions sounds or is stupid, especially since I have absolutely no knowledge of electronic equipment. I recently came upon several 8mm camcorder recorded family tapes of which I would like to convert to regular VHS tapes to give out to my family members. I know that I can just record playing the original tape in an 8mm camcorder and hooking it up to a regular VHS vcr, but I just have so many tapes, that I don't want to put that much wear and tear in the camcorder. My question is......are 8mm camcorder tapes played in a beta vcr or is there a specific 8mm vcr in which they must be played in....or is beta and 8mm the same thing? Can someone please explain this to me? I would really appreciate anything anyone can share....thanks a million!peter

Peter,

yes 8mm is a seperate format. Sony make stand alone players just as they do for theBetamax and VHS format. All three formats are not interchangeable. Both Betamax and 8mm were inventedby Sony and are superior in quality to VHS:_)

For SLHF100 heads try a regional Sony speciallist, or any long standing repairers. My M40 was repaired by the longest serving engineer in december.

I want a new deck!

The broken SLHF-300 has been sold.(Thank you. Drive through.) The BMC-220 and HFP -200 are still available. In case you've tried to reach me and failed using this site's messaging system you could also try using your own E-mail system.

My address is [email protected]

It goes to show that when you keep the price down even a busted Betamax'll sell. That one's for VeHoS the angry, vengeful god of crappy consumer electronics.

I have a Sanyo VTC 5000 VCR if anyone is interested. Playback is fine but rewind doesn't seem to work. Probably a simple matter to fix it, but frankly I just can't be bothered... Comes with the manual and forty cassettes containing whatever my grandfather thought was important over the last couple of decades. Please collect from West London if possible. I NEED THE SPACE.

Colin,

It's more than likely that the problem lies with a cap in the capstan servo. Last timeI had the pleasure ofto do one of those repairs it turned out to be a 0.1uF electrolytic (the very last one I changed - isn't it always?).I suggest you systematically swap out all the caps starting with the bi-polar electrolytics then the larger value elelectrolytics then the smaller value ones followed by everything else:) Be careulf when ttying to realign the capsten free speed. The servo circuit can take asecond or so to lock so don't adjust things too fast!

SONY SL-2700B FOR Sale (USA/Canada)

Sony SL-2700B Beta HiFi.I owned one of these years ago, so when the chance came to buy this one from a friend of a friend, I jumped on it. The unit is cosmetically perfect with the exception of a nick taken out of the index button on the front panel. The 'B' in the model number stands for black, making this deck still look modern. I have not used this deck much lately, but I will recheck all functions before shipping (except camera input). Deck has a great picture, slow-motion etc. I cannot speak for the repair history, but the deck does have metal gears in the loading assembly, and I have just replaced the threading gear/pulley. Sorry, no remote.Asking price- (US$) $245.00 + shipping (about $25 48 states)

Hi!! My father swears by his Betamax and has purchased hundreds of pre-recorded movies over the years. His Betamax recently broke down and he threw it away in frustration, rather than asking his kids to get it fixed (my father's almost 70 yrs. old). I need to find him a used one so he can watch his movies. Can anyone help? We don't have much money. Thank you!!!

I have a question about my SL-HF1000. On the back of the unit is a 5-pin DIN jack labeled "Control L".

I recently purchased a video editing Studio 400 unit from Pinnacle Systems. Usually, the software contols the camera/vcr through a LANC jack connected to a camcorder or VCR. For units without a LANC jack, there is a Panasonic 5-pin adaptor available that slips over the LANC plug.

My question: if I use the 5-pin adaptor to connect the Studio 400 to the SL-HF1000 control "L" jack, will I be able to control the VCR from the Studio 400 (play, pause, stop, fast forward, rewind)?

I know this is kind of a weird question but most of the videos that I want to assemble edit are on Beta tapes and I don't want to transfer them to 8 mm just so I can use the camcorder with the Studio 400.

Pinnacle Systems and Sony were not able to answer this question.

Thank you.

I have an SL5000 Betamax and I just had it repaired after letting it sit for several years. I just moved to the woods, and I would like to know what its' features are, since I know less than nothing about the machine, and I looked on the comparison chart but don't find the SL5000 listed. I would like to use it but need blank tapes. Help?

Sony SL-C7 capstan problems repaired!

Thanks for all the help on this. It turned out to be a capacitor after all. I thought I had replaced them all but this one looked like it was part of the drum servo, a 0.33 uf electolytic capacitor that was high in value (but still in tolerance). It gives a perfect picture i'm glad I managed to fix it would have been such a shame to ditch it.

If anybody has any betamax stuff that would otherwise be dumped (in the UK) I would be gratefull for it to play about with.

Hello everyone. I have about 600 beta tapes. Some are prerecorded tapes and others are blank. I also have several older beta machines, and some other interesting accessories that Sony made for their machines. I would really like to sell the whole lot but would sell items separately. Please e mail me what you are looking for and how much would you pay. Thank you for the site. I feel I have a new home and friends.

SLHF950 Head Assemblies

Due to spares running out and my 950 is due for new heads early next year I wanted to buy some heads.

I was quoted £243.29 + Vat for a upper and lower head assembly, I received a head disc (originally £158 last head replace).

Are the head prices going up or did the suppliers rip off my suppliers?

Also my local repair place had of all things a brand new Sanyo reel drive motor in stock.

Recently acquired a Sanyo VRC-500 camcorder off the net. Unfortunatly some parts(like the cassette door) arrived broken. While I had a spare, I'd like to get a part in better condition so if anyone has an absolulty dead, burnt out VRC 500 OR the Sony equivelents BMC 500, 550, 600 or 660 cameras or the Toshiba equivelent BM T-33 or similar for sale as an exterior parts unit. I'd only be willing to pay about $20 plus the cost of shipping so I only want the hopeless cases with usable shell casings that you were going to throw away anyway. I'd even be willing to buy dead PAL units so long as their parts compatable
