Hi all you PAL Beta fans. I have just unearthed a prize piece of Beta equipment, a SL-HF950. It belonged to my late father and was put into store (dry and warm) when he unfortunetly had to move into a nursing home in 2001. The really cool thing is that when I unpacked it there is an invoice with it, dated 27/04/2001, for £290.57 for the supply of a new upper and lower drum! I don't know what it cost him to have it fitted. This can only have been used a few times since beeing done as he was moved into the home in July of that year. It is is in very good condition complete with remote and transit screws. I have not found a manual as yet. I am offering it here first because I know that it would go to a good home if bought by someone who visits these pages. I am asking £375 which given the circumstances I think is more than good value from what I have seen of the sales of these. If no one wants it on here I will place it on eBay in two weeks time but with the smae reserve price. So don't delay, pick up a bargain today.

Actually that sounds like an ACE head problem. Sometimes gunk/tape residue can clog the ace head up enough to make the control track unreadable. That's what I'd suspect in your case.

The worst case scenario is that the ACE head is worn and can no longer properly read the control track and needs adjustment or replacement. But that's a log term waer problem and not likely something that'll "suddenly" crop up.

Anyways a good cleaning is usually a good idea to start with...

I have a SL-HF900 I recently purchased from E-Bay. The recorder worked well when I got it but now has developed a problem. When playing some tapes the TV screen goes blank and the counter stops counting. If I pause the picture can be seen clearly. If I fast forward or rewind while viewing, the picture can be seen clearly. No amount of tracking adjustment makes a difference.Does anyone know what is causing this phenomenon which is happenning more often as of late?

Just check the Yellow Pages for "video duplication and transfer services". There's usually one person in a given area whose primary business is transfering old film and video to newer formats.

The Radio Shack/ Tandy remote i"m talking about is rather specific, and, while it handles the analog CED player codes, it probably wasn't released in the UK since I don't believe any analog remote CED players were released in the UK. Analog remotes are funny like that, though, if I turn up my dimmable flourescent light all the way, my CED player goes into permanenet pause. It also used to jam my RCA ColorTrak 2000 TV set's remote, but I got rid of that TV...

Hi Aaron. I asked the same question 7 days ago (14June &.16 pm UK time) about one I am bidding for on eBay. I have not had an answer. As I can find no referance to this model on any UK Pal sit, I think it may be for the German or Middle East Markets. Any chance of taking some good alround photos. Would love to know how you came by this. It's a bit strange that two should aparently appear from nowhere? Any help out there?

The remotes for the PAL Beta decks expccept for the 950 are different than the ones for every other tpe of VCR. For the PAL ones each function is on a different frequency. In the NTSC (and the 950 ) ands well as most VHS ones all the functions are on the same frequency with different digital encoding. I know that pressing any button on either Hitachi (1 or 2 forget which) VHS VCR remote will cause a PAL Beta deck to eitehr go into fast forward or rewind (Or scan if it is playing). This is why the universal remotes dont work for them even the ones tried picking up at Tandy in the UK.

Remote Codes for ME-series machines are nonstandard and hard to come by. The odds that a universal remote would have them are not good. If there was one to try, though, it would be a series of Radio Shack Universal remotes which are shaped like a big wedge about 6" long and 2" wide, taller at the front than the base. They have all kinds of oddball codes including ones for the old RCA CED players with ANALOG remotes (as opposed to digital).

Hi there... I'm hoping maybe someone can help me out:

I just picked up a Sony BMC-110 Betamovie camera for free (my friend's father was having a moving sale and had to get rid of stuff fast). After tracking down a 9.6v power adapter, I plugged it in to see if I could get anything out of it, but when I did, all that happened was the TAPE/BATT light blinked on and off steadily. This happens with or without the battery pack (which I assume to be long since dead) inside. There's still a tape in there which I'd like to get out, but even though it appears the unit is getting power, nothing functions, and I (of course) don't have the manual to tell me what a blinking TAPE/BATT light means.

Is there any chance that the unit isn't totally shot?

I *had* one but I've since let it go since I had no real use for another low-end Betamax. If I remember, it doesn't sound nearly so mechanical as Mr. Hawking. I remember the Macintosh computers we had in Grade school had a Hawking-like voice capability, though...

Frankly to tell ,your Betamax is a very Good Machine there's no problem on your Beta.(use B1(one) speed for best recording result)Only High Band Betamax accept HBO streams (your Beta is HiBand but not high enough I supposed). Some Cable (Broadcaster/Bands) use their own different setting. You'll find lots of interesting stuff exploring Betamax World.Love your BEtaMax........

PaulIn this case ,if you don't mind doing a litle research;Let's make a 'fake' filter;a)connect the Cable to the VHS deck b)from the VHS Line OUT(RCA)[Audio/Video] connect to the Line IN Betamax (you'll need a [BNC-RCA] converter plug for Video In)c)Turn the VHS to Tuner state and the Beta to Record state (Line/PCM in Beta)(Dont worry it wont make any harm even if you cross reference.)What's the result?((Hope it works OK))

Boby,

I spoke to a technician from the cable company. According to him, there is no encryption on HBO broadcasts, as well as other channels. It is obvious that these beta machines have a problem with these 'digital' stations. [three identical Beta machines with the same symtoms]. I tried a Sony VHS machine and the problem is NOT evident.

Been a long time no see .How's life going on not bad at all huh....heuheuehuIsn't that HF100E is PAL all along time ago.__________________________________________________________________________________Paul;I cant be sure what it is.The fact is in my HF950 that anomali is coming from ordinary channel at certain station.I had changed the Variable Capasitor with a Ceramic one and this eliminate the problem when Recording but I don't suggest you to do so.By the fact if your 3 HF900 built the same result , might be the Digital-Analog compatibility problem. At a certain state that could be the Frequencies is too high for Beta TUNER/ColorProcessBlock to decode.((does HomeBoxOffc do produced PAL format? I dont think)).Well it's wise if you try to other VHS deck if available(VHS deck is very cheap nowadays)so we can have more data to solve the nag.-Keep me post-

Nick,The difference betwen British (I) and Mainland Europe (B/G) signals is that the UK uses UHF and 6.0MHz analogue sound carrier, while the continent uses both VHF (B) and UHF (G), with 5.5MHz analogue sound carrier. On tape there is no difference; the sound and picture are recorded separately anyway. As long as the recorder and TV are from the same country, or are connected by SCART / audio and video cables (not RF) there is no problem. Older machines typically have separate audio and video sockets instead of SCART, but the voltages and impedances are all similar so don't worry about mismatches, overloads and suchlike.

Boby,

The signal is coming from a Digital Cable TV box. I agree with you in saying that it is NOT the Betamax, due to the fact that it only happens on certain stations. In this case it is all of the so called 'digital' stations. Also, the SL HF900 is in fact cable ready. One other thing...my high speed broadband internet service is also coming in through the same main line. What do you think is gong on?

thanks.

Digital Cable Channels flashing...Can anyone offer any assistance? I have three SL HF900 Betamax machines. All three work well, except when monitoring cable TV through the machine, whether it is coming in through an RF cable or line inputs, stations that are broadcast in 'digital', like HBO and so on flash from light to dark occasionally. It is not the same type of light to dark that Macrovision causes. If I view regular analog stations, the picture is perfect. If I record HBO, etc, the picture flashes show up on the tape as well I doubt very much that all three machines have defects causing this same problem in all 3 machines. Does anyone know what is causing this?

thanks.

Here is a weird one. I am having problems with my SL-F60 lately. Often the heads won't start spinning when I press play. They try to but can't get started and the whole machine shuts down. And if they kick in, it is too slowly and I wont get a picture. But when I turned the machine upside down, to have a look at the motor, it plays perfectly! Turn it back, nothing. Any suggestions how I could fix this?

Do you get the lines on normal playback as well? What is the source deck (the Beta)? If these are Monochrome recordings, I assume you mean from a camera. VHS input specs do not allow for B&W cameras to input most times, I've got an old Sony Home video camera from the 1960s (like the one Bob Crane used) and my VHS decks, even my good ones, balk at its output, but my Betas take it no problem. Beta has better AGC circuits than VHS does. Other diagnostics include making test recodings on the VHS from something else (like a Telecast of some sort or a non-copy protected, clean source like a laserdisc or a tape with no copygaurd of any sort). Good luck.

I have a Vidimagic FP-60 myself. The Beta VCR portion of the Vidimagic FP-60 seems to be based on the SL-B5 portable VCR. The SL-B5 was not made available to the US market so finding spares is gonna be a problem to say the least.

I don't have any Vidimagic manuals.

Any one know what betamax was used in the Sony Vidimagic projector system?Looks like the vcr needs some power supply work.So I need the Vidimagic power supply manual, or even the complete repair manual.

I haven't checked with Sony yet for availability thanks Sam

HGTV's "Hey remember!" is doing their episode with a segment looking back on the advent of VCRs showing a classic SL-5400 and an old RCA toploader and people's reminiscences about when they first got their VCRs, and discussing the demise of Beta. Same episode features a look back at LaserDiscs...

It would make more sense to convert them to DVD nowadays as VHS is pretty much on it's way out...

Look in the Yellow Pages for "video duplication and transfer" services. Otherwise get a Beta VCR and transfer yourself as there is no Beta ->VHS adapter.

AC adaptor and wire remote to work with Sanyo VCR-7300. The adaptor was lost (sic) by the USPS enroute, the customer wants a remote.

Please contact me if you have these items. The e-mail is good.

If that's just the Zenith tuner I don't think it'll bring much without the separate VR-9800 VCR.

Can someone give me an idea of what a Zenith ZRT-9850 betamax might bring if I put it on Ebay ? It also has a camera that goes with it. I am new to Beta and just noticed that Sony seems to be very desireable. Thanks,David.

Is anybody aware of where I can obtain a THS119 hall effect sensor manufactured by Toshiba to replace a failed drum motor sensor in my HF-150 betamax vcr. There are a number of sites around the world holding bulk quantities of this device but none of this companies are willing to sell in small quantities. I am located in Australia an have not been able to find any sources for that device in this country.

Thanks

Warren

I have a Sony C7 with a playback fault where the picture pulsates. It also does it with a fresh recording. I thought it might be the control heads needing cleaning but that hasn t helped. I now suspect the capstan motor. Is there anybody out there that can advise me about this. I used to sell Beta machines and always said they were better than VHS. Thanks.

Your quest for the best Beta portable begins and ends with the SL-2000 (in PAL world the SL-F1 ). It has the most features and they're plentiful enough to be available within the $50 range - don't get suckered into paying the $1000 price dealers for a full outfit like Mr Betamax want to soak you for. It also has an ergonomically well designed button layout - something sorely lacking in Zenith's version of the SL-2000, the VR-9800.

If you want HiFi recording, there is the Sanyo VCR-7300 but it is fairly bulky and you'd need a camera with stereo capability. The SL-2000 seems to weigh in at just about the tolerance level for most shoulders.

The best camera to get for your SL-2000 would be either an HVC-2500 with autofocus but it should be noted that most of the Sony Trinicon "K" cameras (skip the HVC-2410) are good options.

Sanyo also produced a nice lightweight "pistol-grip" video camera - the VSC-450 - for portable use - it was also marketed under the Zenith (VC- 1200) and Sears names - and Sony came out with the CCD-G5 chip camera that is fairly light and adds the benefit of lowered power consumption.

Hi folks. I am seeking recommendations on portable Betamax units. I am very happy with my SLHF-400 but still need to learn a little bit more about its features. Any recommendations though on portable units would be great. I am located in the Detroit, Michigan area, and also am seeking recordings from the late 70s and early 80s. It doesn't matter what it is just so long as there are commercials are there.

I'm in upstate NY but since I have a multisystem VCR the fact that (with you having a UK e-mail addy) they're PAL movies won't be a big problem. Change the ¿'s to o's and drop the nospam.

Hi, I have over 100 precorded beta tapes which I purchased from a video store I used to do repairs for in the 80's. They stopped renting beta tapes at around this time and soon after closed their doors for ever! I just wondered if there was any interest in ex-video library tapes. Most but not all have their original sleaves with pictures. I have not listed them as I would just like to get rid of all of them. Can anyone give me advice on the best place to flog them. I must have about 200 used tapes with TV recordings from the TV made around the 70's to 80's too. Any feedback welcome.

CC Paul Figgiani;I use it in HF 950 it runs smooth but I dont have "Pause Mode", cause it's for HF150 origin as I told I force it into since there's no more parts. Also I'd tried HF77ES into 950 they doing FineI dont know wether its fits in HF900,logically if it works on 950 it should be OK in HF900.Part no A-6762-226-ADisk Assy(dsr-64-r)
