To Alan Jones. Well, in my experience for grum motor failure, the glue has not been a factor. I have seen reports that failures can be due to dry electrolytics, dry joints on the coils and faulty ICs but I have actually fixed many. You want to be sure that the main servo board is delivering the right voltage to the drum motor. There are three wires to the motor circuit. In operation there should be +12V, ground and a supply of around +6V control voltage derived from a pulse width modulation circuit depending on the drum speed. Replacement of the drum motor is usually necessary if all else is OK.
Boby,
OK re the switcher, I thought Olive really wanted to give it a new home.
Deacon,
When you put the machine (Toshiba) in play with the top covers off, see if the tape and spools move. If they do then check whether the pickup reel is gathering the tape or not. If it is not, a sensor eventually shuts the machine down before it is filled with loose tape. A belt kit will usually clear this problem.

To Deacon: I'm not 100% certain on the operations minutae of Toshiba units but it sounds like the capstan belt is gone.
This picture shows the belting of a Toshiba OEM Sears Beta VCR.
http://i19.ebayimg.com/01/i/02/0a/6e/3a_1.JPG
Looks like the capstan is on a flywheel attached by belt to a small motor.
I was thinking of buying a betamax video recorder fromt he United States, I have a few uk ones but like the style and facilities accompanying US machines. What would I have to do to play them in the U.K. as im aware of the differences, i do have a vhs multi standards converter but am aware that the currency would be different in the plug etc. Please advise thanx
I have a basic tech question I hope someone can help out on. I have a Toshiba V-S46 that will not play. It will fast forward, rewind & pause but shuts down when Play or Record is selected. First a loud noise for 2-3 seconds and then the unit stops. Can anyone point me in the right direction?
Noel, Thanks for the info. It's easy when you know how. Have cleaned away old glue, but still have no head drum rotation. Any idea's?
Regards Alan.

About that mystery Beta ad? He filled it in and as it turns out it's for a plasma TV set. Still has a $3.95 start bid but you have to be preapproved for bidding. I wonder if he'd really let it go for the minimum bid?
I am.
Matrix (like one in high school) switcher to be exact. S-video capabilities.Video processor inputs, etc.
Mine has SCART output, others model dont. With remote of course..
To Alan Jones,
I know what you mean about the drum motor magnet. It has considerable pull which must be overcome by applying leverage evenly each side of the magnet with something flat and not too likely to chip the magnetic material. I usually use two screw drivers with tape over the tips to give it some slip and pad the metal surface. Iceypole sticks might work! You need to leverage the disc up evenly with the screw drivers on opposite sides. Once you get it going and create a magnetic airgap the job gets easy. Don't loose the metal spacers. They are different from machine to machine and establish the drive coils to magnet clearance.
Boby - Nice switcher but your not really going to sell it are you!
regards Noel Higgins
Is there anyone who can convert my Beta tape to either CD or VHS format for a cost? If so how much.....? I am willing to post the tapes to you for conversion and pay for to and fro postage also!!!

Hi,
I have a SL-C20 which has the fault of, "no head drum rotation". Following the information given on this site I removed the lock-nut on the bottom of the drum, but I'm still unable to remove the rotor. Is there a special technique in removing the rotor?Any help would be gratefully excepted, as I would love to get this oldie back on the road.

What did you want for that switcher thingie Bobby?
I have a SLF1 -E portable and I have 2 questions :1st problem : I can only have an image (color) on my TV-set when I freeze the image on the recorder. In "play" position, the image is B&W and there is no sound. Does this concern my TV-set, or is there something wrong with the Betamax recorder? Can somebody help me?
2nd Problem : I would like to digitalize my family movies on my PC. As far as I know, the typical Sony connector "VMC330" can't be used. I'm considering to use 2 cinch-adaptors? But, I'm not shure this is the best available connection?Hope to get some usefull recommendations.
Mine has no D-shell connector.I assumed its wired for remote editing. Not for CGA/VGA for sure.I guess that connector is 9 pin female.

Greetings all. Happy weekend! :) Just acquired an SL-HF860D (been wanting one of those cool "D" decks for quite awhile!). The SFX are quite fun, especially the "Brady Bunch" frame formation! But I'm curious: My deck has what looks like a serial port on the rear panel. Assuming it's an aftermarket mod, any idea of what it'd be used for?
Incidently, I also got a bunch of prerecorded tapes as part of the package including several called "Mad Mission X (where X is the number in the series, 1-5)." These are spoofs of 007 films and a couple are quite hilarious!

Ok on the price but manufacturer must keep on provide parts, that'll make Beta go around world. On the fashion if we use it nowadays make us looks like a jerk.

The senter one doesn't do anything - in fact it's not a button at all, just the icon for the focus setting. Red and blue focus in and out. There's no convergence setting because there's only one picture tube.
<<Oh, and the CRT seems to be "crackling" I think it's just static fromt he crt, but I'm a little concerned.>>

Noel, I guess that F11 and C9 have many parts in common.
Japanese languange structure is very unlikely grammatical/phrase. Something like reading from backwards. So its hard to translate logically.
Betamax still exists in Japan from J7/ C7 up to EDV9000 ,they also have exclusive webstore and Ebay.I'd posted many Japs Beta URL in this site from time to time.
I collect Japanese URL in years, some site stands/survive for quite a long time .
In Japan even if you want to throw away Beta into a bin/garbage collector ,you have to pay some amount of money. You'll be charged for sure.
Pity Japs dont sell Beta overseas.
Mike,
I am going to take a punt that "the door doesn't lift" means it is an SLC7 or SLC5. These beasts have a problem with a rubber wheel that gets hard and hence loses drive friction. Sony used to sell an after market upgrade called a "rewind kit". A plastic gear around the middle of the assembly gets replaced and grips the small rubber wheel better, but it still gets tired eventually, What happens in the end is that it cannot drive the load/unload ring gear assembly and the rewind reel maybe does not take up tape slack before the tape ejects, even if you have the top of the case off and use your finger to help the load ring return to it's unload position.
Belt kits are still available however.
If it is a front load unit, different issue. (I think Boby covered that)
Boby,
That reel motor on the F11 machine on the link you gave above looks the same as a C9 unit. But I can't be sure.(never seen that machine before) I had a C9 burn a hole in the same way. It also has an associated blown transistor on the SS11 board of an SLC9 when this happens.
The "Jinglish" translation left a bit to be desired, but I think that is what he (she?) wanted. Then the penny dropped and i realised they ratted the reel motor out of a "mono" SL-F7 that had the broken plastic load gear and placed it in the F11. From what I can work out in the translation the F11 still didn't work.
Might still have the SLC9 "SS11 board" like fault still.
The site looks like it has heaps of dead machines listed with their good or bad aspects waiting for interested parties to request. Japanese machines only????? How do you find this stuff Boby?
regards Noel
Loads of beta tapes all with films recoreded from tv (lots of westerns) 20p each. Buyer collects London E4 area.
Mike ,First look at the tape, is it rewounded and the guiding stick/reel returns to the stanby position. If there's a white round plastic on the motor(the one you hear the noise from),have a look at it wether there's a crack. Usually its the coupling Pulley. Unplug the power cord turn the pulley by your finger step by step(have an attention on the rotation). The tape should come out manually.
olive_e_thomas@yah¿¿.c¿m
What model Betamax Mike? - they have model numbers you know...
It could be anything from a cracked gear to a loose or broken loading belt

Colin,
Well I think by now you would know how fast the drum motor goes in a beta machine A way you can tell their in sync is to put a white dot on the top harmonic balancer disc and use the machine in play mode with a fluoro light above it. The dot should appear to be roughly static. There are three wires to the drum motor. +12volts, earth and a pulse width modulation derived voltage (from memory it was PWM anyway) that gives around 6 volts average. If the drive circuitry failed and put 12 volts in here, then the drum motor would go a lot faster. You will need a circuit and a voltmeter to figure out what gives. If it is not a simple shorted driver transistor then you may need to use a CRO for fault finding. Good luck Colin,
That CINCINNATI MILACRON maybe a century-old company,Brass gears is good anyhow sometimes easily worn out.Lucky for me a friend of mine that former Aussie student has milling shop.I had your mail replied.

Hi,I will throw this one into the ring.I acquired a sony sl-30, on removing the case and pressing play,Inoticed the heads whizzing around at a great rate,is this normal with this model?
Boby,
Re getting replacement metal gears for beta assemblies. I had a look at that milling machine on your link and its great but who has one???? I imagine anything less than quantities of 1000 and they would not bother.

SysCon chip usally hard to fail/broken what I meant was component related to especialy Capasitors.Sometimes weird Beta plays good on one particular Tape, my failed 950 do like yours.Good on your new Pinch Roller (50$ was too high even with shipping).Swapping boards eventually works out fine, I recommend that.Problems on Beta tends to be a simple component failure.

I am searching for old V2000 VTR/VCR to buy, Where can I ?Please help
Hi Boby, Charlie, Olive,NnilsI have the HF-SL900 that won't play some tapes yet freezes them (June 25th, July 11,21,22 and 27).I FINALLY got a pinch roller from the Sony parts representative (Global Electronics). The price has gone up, $50 with shipping. Anywise, I put this it the recorder and had some minor improvements. A couple of the tapes now play and others are trying to play, a picture appears sprotically but then dissapears again.By your replies my guess is to look into the electronics and the guides. Is guide repair something a do-it-yourselfer can do? How do I check the SysCon CHIP?There is a guy a couple hours from me who has e-mailed me to help. Mike also thought it might be Pinch Rollers or guides. If this is real tech stuff with special equipment needed I will take it to him with my old 900 in the case the parts in that one are good.By the way, I did again check the tapes concerned back in my SL100 and was able to watch the tapes. Thanks for all the help.

Fuses rarely blow by themselves, usually it's because of that "sacrificed" parts.
Fuses main purpose is not to save expensive parts; they protect against fire hazard.
olive_e_thomas@yah¿¿.c¿m
To Clive. It's likely that the canned air sprayed moisture into the electronics of that beast and shorted something out. If your lucky the fuses blew and that's all you'll need to replace. If you're really lucky it only set of the DEW sensor and a half day's drying out might get it back up and running like nothing happened.
Of course what usually happens is that a $99 hard-to-get-at electronic componant nobly sacrificed itself to save the 99¢ fuse you could pluck from the topmost board.
Before 'MrBetamax' set up his site so that you had to allow his tracking cookies for even a look around, I was able to snag the spec sheets on the CCD-G5 and some of the HVC-series Trinicon cameras. The CCD came out at 250 horizontal LOR while the Trinicons had 300 LOR.

I have owned Beta for years. Often laffed at by my friends. I just bot a SL-5400 on ebay and it arrived. I forgot how heavy those old units are. It worked last nite when I hitched it up. Just found my first Betamovie recording. (Note to self: Keep them fingers off the power zoom!!!) It was the last day of Expo 86 and I had found a shop that would rent me a BMC-200 with spare batteries. Mostly outdoor stuff since the 28 lux minimum precluded indoor shots -- except inside BC Place Stadium, where I shot the closing ceremonies. Compared to the network recording I have (also on Beta), that half-inch trinicon in the BMC-200 gave greater detail than the broadcast cameras captured that day. It seems the big boys were playing with the first low-pixel CCD chips inside otherwise fabulous equipment.

Olive,
I have checked out a hobby shop called Hearns Hobbies in Melbourne near Flinders Street station, but no luck with the SLC9 sized gears. They did have some the size of the SLHF100 load mechanism gears. I don't know that I am confident about the strength of the clear plastic fabricated gears. I was thinking more along the lines of machined brass replacements. Thanks for the link though. If I get the translator to work if may be worth tackling. regards Noel.

Hey Mitch - good luck with the SLO 1700. When do you get the backup Sanyo VTCM20?
Also -good work Olive. Especially for not arcing up on the proverbial and never ending beta/vhs adaptor question.
I wonder if anyone on palsite knows of a source for replacement gears (aftermarket equivalents) for the SLC9. I might be worth getting a batch made up. If we did, the side gears of the SLHF100 load mechanism would run a close second in terms of replacement needs.

hey guys is there any way of watching a beta tape on a VHS VCR? like an adaptor for the VHS or s-thing? PLZ help.
Sorry but there is NO adapter for playing Beta tapes in a VHS machine. Simply can't be done. Only those tiny VHS-C tapes were designed to play in their bigger VHS VCR brethren.
Well, After I swore at the SLO-1700 and went and made a cuppathe machine decided to be nice to me. It now works near perfect :)
Checked the RF comming off the heads, With the tracking adjustedit was as flat as the proverbial!Must have had its heads replaced just before it was withdrawn from service.

hi guys. haven't been on here for ages. My trusty Sony SL C6 machine is going strong. A tape gets stuck sometimes when ejecting but that's easy to get out and with BETAMAX the tape path never breaks. Have also got laserdisc, dvd and VHS and over the years I have lost count how many times my VHS machines have suffered broken tape path's. The other day I heard a snap come from my Toshiba 6 head VHS machine and yep, it's broken. Now I have to fix that one. While I'm there I'll stick in the heads from my toshiba 8 head VHS machine which is now only good for parts.
The only decent VHS machine I have is my 1980 national top loader which after 24 years of service and a drop of two metres is still working.
I'll take some new pics of the equipment and all my movies in my shed soonhere is a link to my pics sitehttp://au.photos.yahoo.com/matt1473au

On Sony's programmable remotes the code for Beta is usually 01 and VHS is 03 on ones that use 2 digit codes. For 3 digit codes Beta would be 001 and VHS 003.
8mm VCRs and cameras use 02 or 002 BTW...
If you want to control both VCRs on one remote, your remote needs to be able to support reassigning an empty device slot like the slot for A/V devices or the cable box slot.
I wouldn't worry about burn-in on a Vidimagic any more than burn-in on an ordinary TV set. CRTs are reasonably hardy creatures. Just don't leave it showing a blank or static image forever.

I have a Sony Betamax SL HF 400 which I control with my RMT 131 remote. I also have a Sony SLV-N500 VHS unit which I control with its RMT-V402. How can I program the RMT-V402 to control both my Sony VCRs (beta and VHS) and also my Sony TV with a single ( RMT-V402) remote control. Or are these two different systems even tho they have the same logos? Is there a new code I need to manage the BETA also on the RMT-V402?
Please don't ask why I run both Sony Beta and Sony VHS! I have a spouse who likes on-screen programming with the VHS.
If no solutions are possible, will someone make me an offerI can't refuse for the SL HF 400 and 300 beta tapes, pleae?
Hi! I'm a proud new owner of a Sony Vidimagic (the one without the beta-recorder). I love it! I'm just afraid of overusing it, burning in the CRT, or wearing it out. Do you think I'm paranoid or is the risk small. I have the brightness turned down to prevent burn-in. Is that something to be worried about. Can an old unit like this be repaired if the time ever comes? Go vidimagic!!!!
Thanks,
Mike
Hi, Just wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction of where i could purchase/find a copy of a manual for the super betamax SL-S2000, i have 2 of these machines, plus i also have a sanyo betacord VTC-M20 which i have had for a while and has never failed me, anyone that needs a copy of this manual i would be happy to copy or scan it, thanks.
Holy Hell, Jesse, where did you get an AG-1980? That's a pretty high end deck! No shame in using it over a plain HF-300. S-VHS is plainly superior to standard Beta; When it comes to BIs versus S-VHS, it's more a matter of personal taste, color and such will vary, I tend to favor BIs because the tapes are much cheaper; Movies usually get BIIs if they need it, sometimes I'll use S-VHS if I need the extra length or the interchange or something; a multimedia class I took last year had S-VHS VCRs at their disposal, When I needed to bring in a tape, I used S-VHS. Any luck getting the ED-cam working? Well, I still say my heaviest VCR would crush yours if it fell on it... (80+lb Umatic deck)

The problem is Pavel that the catalog of Betamax releases was so vast and from so many companies that unlike say the list for Selectivision CED, is not available on some centralised database thaty I know of.
You'll have to do a lot of footwork on your own just to get a fraction of what's available.
Remember, Google is your friend...

i think my sl-hf300 's going to be mad at me because I haven't used it since may 9th..... i've been letting the Sony SLV-575UC amie VHS do the taping... and my Pana S-amie AG-1980 is a new resident.. been usin it fairly often. I wonder if it still even works :P
Plz help me to find some catalog, where I can gen a lot info, what Musical videos was released oficially on Betamax?I know, that some various-artists compilations like "Now Thast what I call a music" were released in US on Beta, but where can I read, what are artists and videoclips on it?
Regards.

From most of the previous posts here with the same problem, that seems to indicate either a misshaped or misaligned ACE (Audio Control Erase) head or (if you're lucky) a worn pinch roller.
Cleaning the ACE head and pinch roller with isopropyl alcohol can help if they're just dirty from use and/or storage.
Look in the maintenance section of PALsite for specifics on locating the ACE heads.

_@_oo - Ooooh yummy! Taping the Olympic opening ceremonies on my T7 Theater Beta. Best of all I can toggle between Dennis Miller and still hear the games on the T-7's speakers because let's face it once you get to the parade of nations they're about as exciting as community college graduation ceremonies...

I have a Toshiba beta machine inwhich I am trying to troubleshoot. The machine works well at playing and recording tapes. I have replaced the main belt. The problem is that it will not fast forward or fast reverse....what am I looking for?
Was wondering if anyone here gets ABC AsiaPacific- which appears to be a version of ABC from Austrlia that is sent to other countries in the Pacific rim. If so was wanting to get soemthing taped off the staion that appears to be shown on a regular basis.

Ron,
Check out PALSITE HF100 video information at http://www.palsite.com/100tech.html. See the section headed "No tape transport". It is about lack of sufficient forward tension. Maybe it should be headed intermittant tape transport because it bepends on reel friction and tape load as well.

Could be worn out Upper/lower drum, possibly sticky old tapes or sensors problem....
