It might be a blown HiFi board. I went through a couple T7s with a bad audio board before I was able to assemble the one I have that works. I have a spare amplifier if that's not working but no spare T7 boards.

In other news I picked up a Talking Betamax for the grand sum total of a nickel! It apparently has loading problems and is missing it's bottom plate(!?!?) but hopefully has decent boards so I can get the one I already have (with those damned dried out capacitors) running.

SL-HFT7 with a strange problem: The video looks great, and the sound through the Tv works as long as the HiFi/Normal switch is in the Normal position, but not in the HiFi position (even though the Beta HiFi indicator is constantly lit). The problem is that the audio output to both the Speakers and through the Headphone jack is mostly just a whiny buzz. I've taken the machine apart and put it back together again, but have had no luck finding the problem. Anyone have any ideas??

I have been given a Sony SL-HF550 beta machine which works fine until you want to eject the tape. It jams immediately and I must take it apart to get the tape out- with difficulty I might add. Where can I get it fixed? I am a klutz so I can't do it.

Why would you need such a list for but to mass mail spam ?? At least, don't ask...

Regarding the SL-HF2000 vs. SL-HF200D, I think I read somewhere the 200D has an additional head for SFX playback and the 2000 only has two. I could be wrong.

An obvious difference is the remote controller which has a jog wheel and what looks like an LCD screen. While the 2000 remote is very complete, it does not sport these features.

To Pat Murphy,

In the slow motion modes (and x2?) the SLC9 uses a third head and a delay line which gives a lower resolution picture. In normal play it drops back to the normal two heads. Hopefully one of the heads is just dirty. Try cleaning using a cleaning tape or have some one do it professionally. It could be a damaged head but hopefully not.

Good luck! Noel

The SL-200D was the Japan Home Market version of the American SL-HF 2000. They were both NTSC-only machine but since Japanese broadcast channels are on different frequencys and because Japan has a different stereo broadcast system the SL-200D's tuner isn't compatible with the US's TV systems. Not a problem if you have satellite TV or use a cable box or another VCR as a tuner.

The SL-200D can't handle PAL or SECAM and also needs a step down transformer to operate on US current as Japan is on a 100 volt system vs. the US 110/120 volt system.

A lot of them show up on the Yahoo Japan auctions and there may still be Japanese mail order places that can get you one somewhere in Japan but you could probably just as easily hunt down an unsold SL-HF 2000.

Questions about the SL-200D:

1. Is it an NTSC only VCR? Can we play and record PAL & SECAM systems?2. How can we buy a VCR like this? Does anyone know a site written in English? I don't understand a word of Japanese..

Thanks..

Have you tried the adjusting the tile of the #5 guide (#5 tilt adjustment screw)? That might bring down the tape past the #4 guide or at least produce the effect of bringing down #4.

After that jiggering with the #7 guide should produce a proper tape wrap around the video head.

Olive...thanks for the jpg of the tape path. I had already tried to adjust the #2 and #3 tape guides, but nothing I can do will lower the tape on the #4 tape guide. It's not a big deal, but it is frustrating to know it will work fine if I could just lower it a bit. Thanks again.

It's likely the back coating might've gummed up the ACE head. A full manual tape path cleaning should be in order. You should avoid using Betacam SP tapes. Betacam Oxide tapes are OK.

Hello all,

I'm from Greece and I own a Sony SL-500 ME MKII. About 3 years ago a friend of mine brought me a Betacam SP cassette and he put it in the video to play it. Since then when I record tapes, the sound is too low..

1. I know that the tape damaged the video2. Does the video wants only a good head cleaning or is it more serious the damage?

I would be grateful if somebody could give some information.

Thanks in advance..

I have seen the GCS 50 a friedn has one and it is NOT based on the 950 - no sliding tape drawer. I think it is a version of the 900. It will only record in Beta 1 or 2 no 3 and the switch to switch between 1 and 2 is accessed through a little hole under the jog shuttle whell that is covered up by the factory with a piece of aluminium tape! I know for a while people thought they had either a beta 1 or a beta 2 version of the deck, since the switch is not easy to find.

If anyone is interested I found someone who has the Zenith version of the SL-2000 for sale complete with the camera and tuner timer and a battery, been told it all works.

I don't have an SL-HFR70 service manual - I'm using one from an SL-T50ME. Either try moving the #3 guide adjustment plate or try screwing down the #5 guide screw.

I scanned their tape path diagram so you know which one's I'm talking about. My best guess without being able to look under the hood of your Beta is that the #3 pin is messed up.

Tape Path Problem in an SL-HFR70:

I need some help here. On one of my HFR70 machines, the tape is running very high on the #4 tape guide, wich causes a distorted picture. However, if I "correct" this by holding my index finger on top of the #4 guide, the picture looks perfect and the Beta HiFi light on the HFP -200 turns on, indicating that the tape alignment is nearly perfect. The problem is that I can;t figure out what adjustments to make to lower the tape. Although I don't mindusing my fingers (I love touching these machines), it's probably not good for the tape and soon I will have to use the WC. Any advice or suggestions (Olive) much appreciated.

About the GCS-50:

1. There is no doubt about it being a Sony.

2. Although Ray's site says that the electronics are those of the SL-HF1000, it is clear that the 711B2 chassis is the same as that used on several other machines including the SL-HF900 (US), SL-HF950 (UK), and even the SL-HFR70!

3. My best guess is that the GCS-50 is a slightly modified industrial version of the SL-HF900 (without the tuner, timer, or remote) rather than the SL-HF1000, but I wanted to hear the opinions of others (thanks Olive).

I recently got a Toshiba multi system machine off ebay with a fault that sounded like belts.Toshiba V-9680. PAL/SECAM/NTSC 4.43. I was in a radio shack today and they're clearing out their Beta tapes. It's not the deal of the century by any means - $3.97 a throw, but they are the Sony BTHGs, which usually run 5-6 retail where you can find them. Even on eBay, sealed ones often end up selling for around that much when you include postage, depending on buyer savvy.

I own a SONY SL-HF900 Beta, and I am having a problem with it. I had it serviced at a regular tv and vcr repair business and cleaned recently (it would not take in a tape prior to me taking it there, but it did afterwards, they fixed that completely, however), but there was a problem that they could not fix. When you hit play the video will start playing but briefly after starting to play it will stop playing without any command from me to do so. The unit does not power off, it just stops playing the tape. I have tested this with many tapes, and it does the same thing with any tape. The tape will not play for a specific amount of time, it will either stop immediately after hitting play or a few seconds after. So you do get a see either a split second of video or a few seconds of video. What in the world causes this? I am taking the VCR to a SONY service center today. I was just wondering if I could run through some ideas with them.

Hi...I have two questions relating to the SL-2300:

1. What causes this model to develop one second of "snow" every 8-12 seconds? I have seen several of these up on eBay that all have the same problem. Most think it relates to tracking, but I think it could easily be a bad capacitor (or two). Anyone know?

2. The same model came with a wired remote (RM59W) that seemed to only have Play/Pause and Betascan capability. I want to build one. Does anyone know what the inside of this remote (i.e., resistors) looks like?

To Paul with the C9UB

The load mechanism is a troublesome beast on these machines. To load, the load ring must be in the home position.(ie. unloaded) There are microswitches to sense when functions change over. Make sure the slide lever at the base of the load mechanism has been reconnected to sense the main mechanisms position. If you loosen the four screws holding the load mech to the chassis you can often find the sweet spot were it will work.

Make sure that when you put back a new gear for a broken one that the mechanism is parallel and in the up (onloaded) condition. The door adjustment can be tricky, but if you have not noticed a problem DONT ADJUST IT.

regards Noel

Not that cassettes may vary slightly in dimension and so the trick is to try a few different brands of tape casette if you can. Good luck.

The SL-5100 probably has dried out or close to drying out capacitors but you can adjust the CAPFREE trimpots as well as the TRACON trimpot on the board holding the external tracking control knob. If that doesn't help you're pretty much hosed unless you have a working knowledge of electronics and can root out and replace the dead capacitors.

Attention Collectors!!!!!

My grandad, who has just died aged 95, was a keen recorder of films off the telly onto Betamax, and had a library of some 200 Betamax tapes, fully catalogued, containing myriad old films from Fred 'n' Ginger to John Wayne and Jimmy Stewart. He also left some cellophane-wrapped, unused Betamax tapes, along with one Betamax video recorder (he had had two, but sadly one gave up the ghost). If you are interested in any of these goodies (and feel able to transport the goods from Devon, England), please contact me A.S.A.P. as we're anxious to find a happy home for them.

In regards to the mystery wedding tape, you will get very strange low pitched noise on the linear audio track from a betacam recording, or if its a more recent betacam variant often they used the linear tracks for time code and you will get a horrid pulsing tone. I am more than happy to transfer betacam to something else if need be. Noel can easily transfer if its an NTSC tape, how ever I doubt that very much. If it is an NTSC tape you will still here perfect linear audio, this will confirm it for you.

Terbo/Olive,

I just checked among my tapes for a Maxell EX750 and lo and behold the second tape I grabbed was one. It is a high grade domestic tape. It had a price sticker from K-Mart for $10.99. Expensive enough, but far too cheap to be a betacam tape. (they were $25 to $ 30 ) I can transfer it for you if you want. I have a multisystem machine in case it's NTSC.

Olive,

On the mystery wedding tape. Good point about the fact it might be NTSC, I was not thinking of that angle. On the betacam tape comments. I have collected about 150 oxide betacam tapes, most with the nice plastic cases and labels, which I use with the SLHF950s. They are my cheap substitutes for Pro-X tapes. They all have the slide tab on them so I assumed that was part of their specification apart from better reel designs to cope with the six times higher speed and edit work. (less friction)

John - you threw out a working beta machine!!!!! - you should be flogged!

The HiFi processors did not have amplifiers but Sony's MLV-1100 MTS stereo processor did. You could hook it up to any video device with an MPX output - my SL-HF 300 and Vidimagic FP60 both have MPX outjacks and get full Multichannel Television Sound (MTS) - the US stereo TV standard. If you hooked up speakers you get a home theater - unless you go and play a tape. The MLV-1100 would keep playing the audio from whatever channel the VCR was tuned to!

The SL-EX7 is the Japanese version of the US SL-HFT7. The row of snap connectors is for the external speakers you can hook to this unit - it has a built-in amplifier with volume control, bass-boost and 3 soundfield effects. The US model doesn't have the UHF ribbon cable connections seen to the left on the back of the unit of the SL-EX7.

Just got my copy of the Vidimagic FP-60 manual if anyone needs a copy themselves. Just drop the '-snail-' and figure out the hidden @-address...

Dont know if anyone is interested but I found a place semi locally that has a HFP -200 HiFi processor for the Sl-HFR series betamax decks. It is a store stock demo unit, which had been used as a display unit back when they were new- they sold their last HFR Betazmax and still had teh HIfI adaptor ready. They want $100 for it which is a good price since this is the MTS unit. Let me know if anyone is interested.

Well..me either, looks like there's power amplifier inside. Take a good look at the rear panel. That snap in connector might be for speakers cable.

But why do I feel it's for ribbon cable VHF antenna.

Reelmaster, I actually threw out 3 sony laser disc players on monday in hard waste collection, and 6 beta vcr's, and 2 VHS's and 2 Umatics. A single betacam and a heap of other junk. Criminal, one of the betas and umatics worked fine, but some models you cant even give away.

All 3 laserdisc players had similar faults tracked down to the system board. I wanted to start collecting them but I find good ones are rarer than beta's these days, and finding discs is even harder still considering I dont want the inferior NTSC stuff. The NTSC looks so raggard on a 9 foot wide screen. I have a few old laserdiscs somewhere.

Hows the shed and the C6 going?

Adding to my woes with th SLO-1700. I find that when then drum takes off and the emergency stop operates.after which the machine will refuse to perform any tape function. :(HOWEVER! after years of learning what a coloumb is, what a henry is,who michael faraday was etc. I find that if I do the calibrated drop testthe machine returns to normal operation. Just wondering if your friend's beta camcorder was an NTSC camera. If he flew in (or bought his camera) from somewhere else in Asia to make the recordings he could've been using an NTSC camcorder. IF you don't have a Betacam recording (I've seen Betacam tapes that used breakout tabs and it's not unlikely that consumer tapes weren't fed to a Betacam machine from time to time) - and given that a Betacam camcorder costs around $ 30, 000 USD, it's a better guess that it was a Betamax (Betamovie) recording - and the tape is still good, it IS most likely that it's an NTSC or non-PAL -format tape.

Dianna Withrow - You probably have either a split loading gear or the tape carraige is broken or out of alignment. I have a stock of spare loading mechanisms and gears that should fit the SL-HFR30. If you or someone with you is reasonably handy with tools it's a fairly simple job to replace and repair.

Change the ¿'s to o's in my address to get back to me on that.

Many thanks to Olive & Noel for your responses. My wedding Beta tape was recorded by a friend of a friend about 15 yrs ago. What with a new bride & all...I did not get to see the camcorder, hehehe. Thanks to Noel's suggestion, I've noticed that it has a breakout tab (not broken yet)...& not a sliding one. So I guess this means I have a domestic & not a commercial tape. According to Olive, Betamax and Betacam are not compatible, right? Should I then look for a Betacam VCR to view my tape? Many thanks guys...I've learned a lot from your expertise.

I guess you already know that I-I am having difficult or maybe impossible time finding someone to repair or transfer-old and much loved tapes to VHS. Can anyone give me some kind of direction?Thanks-Dianna [email protected] -

BREAKING NEWS//The SONY corporation so far, started continuing the production of ED beta video deck EDV-9000, and high band beta high fidelity video deck SL-200D, but it is the schedule which ends in the future, approximately 2,000 units (both type total) with production.

Was the Beta camcorder a 'Betacam' camcorder or a Betamovie camcorder? Was this video shot by a friend of by a professional?

If it was a Betamovie then the problem is with the VCR. Someone else here can help you with specifics. Maybe needs new idler tires, head and tape path cleaning or some electronics adjustment. If this was shot with a BMC-500 SuperBeta camera it could be that the Sanyo deck can't handle the signal. I've had mixed results with SuperBeta on a Sanyo deck.

If it's a Betacam tape then you need a Betacam VCR, not a Betamax VCR to play it. Betacam and Betamax are separate incompatible formats.

Wondering if you could advise. Just bought a used Sanyo VTC-M10 PAL Beta VCR. The seller played his tape and it worked fine. However, when I brought it home to play my tape, all I got was diagonal black lines with strange noise. My tape has never been played ever since it was recorded using a Beta camcorder about ten years ago, here in Australia. The tape is a Maxell EX 750. Since the tape contains our wedding video, I'd appreciate any advice you can offer. Many thanks. Cheers.

Hi

we were looking for information on the Sony HVC 3000P and the Betamax PAL chat page came up.

We recently bought the camera along with a recorder SL3000UB and tuner timer unit TT3000UB in a local sale room. Very excited, but unfortunately the only thing that comes to life is the tuner unit.

Has anyone got any suggestions as to where to start looking, blown internal fuses etc? Is there any way to connect the camera to a device other than one with a Sony 14pin socket, an adapter perhaps, so we can at least check the camera? Would it be worth repairing the recorder unit?

I could go on asking mundane questions but you probably get the idea...... Or does anyone know anyone who might want to buy it for spares, repairs or general tinkering with?

Hope you don't mind us posting, we're not sure of the protocol for using chat pages, sorry again for being pests

Thanks for your time

Boby,

Fair comment. I would hope you know the difference by now. The SL 200D, I thought that was a really defeatured unit sold in the last days of NTSC Beta. I don't comment much on repairs to the model numbers I don't recognise. I assume they are mostly NTSC.

On another note, there seemed to be HiFi heads available for a while from Singapore. (For Sony SLHF100. ) I don't know whether they still are.

Nills,

Hard to say that in general upgrading actually much more expensive than replacing the whole unit. It's like modifying your MPV to become BigFoot. Some people still love their PIII rather than PIV.

I have this controller tested on P4/1.8A N' works magnificent ( bought it since there's no UDMA5/S-ATA on Intel D845GBV).I used to combine the 150TX2+ with OHCI compliant card to capture movie from Betamax/VHS/Hi8. I heard(not absolutely sure) that its OK on P3BF.I imagine you got to FLASH(erase/reprogram your BIOS)to get rid of bugs.(patch available from ASUS)

http://www.pchardware.co.uk/promisesata150.htm

http://www.pricegrabber.com/search_getprod.php/masterid=2292732

Since you got the powerleap. That should boost the speed on your System up to the limit.(of course the Drive should be replaced)

Noel,It crossed my mind that you're a woman. In general Boby name is a male. I knew those differences. On the broken link, described about SL-200D NIB unopened. Just like Yahoo Auction/Ebay (Japs).

To Joachim. I take it you only have the SL-F1 and not the TT -F1 tuner module. You should still be able to RF-out it to an aerial in jack on either your TV or VHS VCR.

Check out Stephen Wagner's SL-F1 tricks and tips page for connecting with the multiconnector bus-port.

Boby: [still off-topic except it helped digital video]. P3/450/512k before: 22 minutes to do full Norton AV scan. Celeron/1200/256k after: 14 minutes to do the exact same task. Sure there are other bottlenecks (still UDMA-33) but this is the best cheap upgrade that ever happened to my Asus P3B.

Nope, its a SB-V3000( the latest )there's another NTSC (older) version with the same number .I have both.( the NTSC one in faulty condition )

Thanks for the offer, I got too much deck at the moment. I'll keep that in mind just in case I needed it in the future.

[off the topic];About upgrading processor on older system is OK, anywise the bottleneck comes from the other peripheral such as low access of Hardmedia, low speed DRAM etc. Boosting CPU doesnt realy help but worth a try as hobbyst. Someday the mechanical storage must be replaced with Solidstate to eliminate slow acces, wich only available in industrial.

Easiest and cheapest upgrade for old Pentium II or III system gets you 1.4 gHz with 256k. Feels much faster than the $100 cost. Watch those new-fangled DVD's on your old box without all that stuttering (finally almost better than SuperBeta, heheh). I'm a believer. Search patiently and get them even cheaper.

Hi all... I have a Sony Betamax SL-2300 with some type of servo control problem. Tracking is inoperative and a large block of horizontal white noise moves from the bottom to the top of the picture about every 3 seconds. The picture looks pretty good in fast forward and rewind review modes. I've did some internet research and found a few messages refering to bad electrolytics on the servo board. Another message referred to a bad transistor called Q345. Another message stated tweaking some of the servo control pots may at least make it usable. Any thoughts or ideas appreciated. Thanks. Steve.
