i am a musician and have just setup a computer based all-digital bedroom studio. here's the problem: digital sounds too cold to me. i want to record my final master on tape to give it that warm "tape saturated" sound of older recordings. quality reel-to-reels are a pain to maintain and too expensive. i have heard betamax has very good sound quality. i am wondering if betamx just has just "good" or is it "excellent" in terms of both recording and playback sound quality? is betamax a good way for me to go? also, what exactly are PAL and NTSC? if betamax is a good way to go, what's a good model(s) i should look into? thanks in advance for any help.

I would prefer no new Beta models to be made because we will lose the ability to copy macrovision encoded vhs tapes if more people bought Betas, we are the elite, don't forget that.

Also I can't see new Betas being made anyway because of the big companys focus on their DVD players.

I would definitly not recommend Beta Hifi (or VHS Hifi) for master recording. They both use an agressive companding scheme that can cause noise pumping. I know that there are electronic processors out there that can emulate the "tape sound" without the wow and flutter and modulation noise. That would be a better way to go.

I am trying to find information on a film called "Get the Swappy Jerkaps with the Blyton Splitter" (or something like that). It may have been sci-fi and had characters called Fat Yoppo Dolodo and Little Billy's Bludgeon Boys. It was available on Beta many years ago. Can any enthusiasts help? Thanks for your time.Richard.

To the previous poster

You've just won the Mystery Science Theater 3000 "MiSTy" award for most obscure movie ever made!

You might want to czech with Absolute Beta at ;http://www.videos.net/betamax/

for that one. They sell Beta movies out of Remington Virginia, so if you're looking for that one in PAL you're odds of finding it wouldn't be very long. Of course that doesn't sound like a big-seller so they may have just about every copy ever made (and still in the origional shrink-wrap)

Hi,

I have a weird recording problem with my Sony HFR 300. In playback mode the picture is perfect and I have absolutely no complaints, but when I record I get a weird rainbow colored haze over the bottom 2/3 of the picture. The tapes are watchable but I would prefer to fix it if I can. To be more descriptive:The "haze" consists of travelling, diagonal, colored lines which occur on the lower two thirds of the screen, they are not present at all above this. How can I adjust this away, when I can't see it in playback? until it is recorded onto a tape?

anywaythanks for listening will

PS I have number of NTSC prerecorded tapes which I would like to trade inc. ET, the Toolbox Murders, Close Encounters, Bon Voyage Charlie Brown etc. inquire if interested.

Hello All,

About 2 weeks ago, I was walking past the back of a local TV station when I saw this big cardboard box poking out of their overstuffed dumpster. Curious as ever, I hefted it out and opened it. To my surprise, I found that it was loaded w/ discarded Betacam (not SP) tapes! Mostly 15-minute along w/ some some 5-, 10- and 30 -minute tapes -- nearly 40 in all! So I lugged the box to my car and took it home.

I'd heard that non-SP Betacam tapes could be used in a Betamax VCR. Is this true? They're the same size as normal Beta tapes (but are in colored cassette housings [blue, red, grey, etc]!) and fit into the loading door of my VCRs. All of the tapes are in clamshell-type cases and many have unmarked labels (altho a few look like they're marked w/ commercials and news footage).

Does anyone know what the Betamax equivelents would be for Betacam 5, 10, 15 and 30 's? Yannow, L-XXX tape length. There's no length printed on the labels or cases.

Hello,I just purchased a Sony Super Beta Theater VCR, Model#HFT7 (1986). It has a built in amp with 2 speaker connectors on the back. It has volume control on the vcr which only controls the 2 speakers, as well as balance and theater level to control the 3 different audio settings-Movie Theater, Concert Hall, and Simulated Stereo. It works great and I even have the original remote. Does anyone know how many watts the built in amp puts out per channel? I want to be sure to use the right speakers. I might be willing to trade this VCR for another beta vcr- Maybe an SL-HF750 or an SL-HF1000. Or you can email me to suggest a possible trade. Please include the model# and the brand. Must be in good working order also. If nothing comes up here, you may see me listing this on Ebay in the future. This is a very rare vcr, as I have only seen one on Ebay a few months ago.

Got hold of a funky Mexican Beta bootleg of the movie virus(with Spanish subtitles). You could tell it was a bootleg not only from the poor quality of the recording (or the box it came in) or that you could see the on screen display of the dubbing VCR but because you could see black bars covering up the studio "watermarks" that they put on tapes they give out to movie critics and talk shows and other media outlets every so often. Guess there's some Mexican Beta lovers out there. A unique find.

I have 2 slhf-750s with open and close quirks. When I press eject, the carriage slides out and the tape holder comes up allowing tape to be slide in or taken out. However, the machine makes a sound like a phaser on overload about to explode, ie sound builds like a crescendo and then the tape holder lowers and the carriage retracks. Plays and records fine, one just has to be quick to get the tape in and out. Any ideas on what is broken, worn , etc. to cause such a problem?

Also the leds have various problems. Anyone know which circuit board/ boards manage the leds and what might be a fix?

Great picture and sound and recording

thanks for any help.

Sam

I had a similar problem with a 750 which just got back from the shop and it kind of sort of works now, although it is not fixed. There are some gears that wear out and are supposed to hold the tape carrier upright but when they wear down the thing will start slipping. Sony does not make the gears anymore, wlathough the technician I use was able to cobble something togeterh to get it to stay up most of the time.

What Sony needs to do is make some more machines, there are now parts wearing out on my decks that they figured would never get replaced since you would have bought a new VCR by then. This was a good attitude during the 1970's up until the late 1980's when they kept coming out with a better VCR then the one you had worn out, but since at present my NEWEST VCRs are 12 years old they are past the point when one would have upgraded in the past.

Hello,

I'm a children's singer/songwriter. I live in Nanaimo, BC, Canada, (on Vancouver Island). The master of my second kids' album (cassette) was/is on Super Beta Hi-Fi, consumer format. It was done on a Sony SL-HF900 machine. I'm wanting to now manufacture it as a CD, but can't find a machine to transfer it to DAT or CD-R to send to the plant for replication. Can you help me? Where are you located?

Any help is appreciated. <http://nanaimo.ark.com/~ianj>

*** SONY SL-HF860D Digital SUPER-BETA HIFI for sale ***

SL-HF860D for sale, excellent condition.

I purchased this unit from it's original owner. It only neededslight exterior cleaning to look like brand new. It has alldoors and panels intact, and has only slight scuffing on top fromother components.

It comes complete with working original remote, which is lightlyscratched, as well as the original user manual.

All digital effects work perfectly. Playback and record tested atBII & BIII speeds, as well as playback of tapes made on othermachines. Picture quality is excellent, just as good as my HF900.

I am asking $425 US for the unit, plus actual shipping costs,UPS ground.

I'm not sure where to start. I'm looking for an old Sony Discman that was manufactured I believe sometime between 1988 and 1991. It was Sony's high end model. Incredible unit. It had a number pad on the lid and a rather large lcd screen on it. It also had volume and controls on the headphone wires. I used to have this discman but it was stolen in 92'. I can't remember the model number and I can't find any info anywhere on the web. Any help on the model number and sightings would be great. You would be greatly appreciated. Thanks,Brantley

Dono, the SLHF 1000 does have a "Character Generator", but for video insert editing you can use the SLHF 750, or SLHF 2100, and maybe the SLHF 900. Oh, and I think the EDV 7500 and EDV 9500 "metal" decks should do the same. TTYL. Pepse.

I am prepared to extend you a line of credit for say, ONE MILLION DOLLARS! However one of the stipulations is that you use the money for EVIL purposes. You may purchase say, a Beta camcorder but only an evil Beta camcorder (unless you plan to use the camcorder for evil purposes than you are not required to purchase an evil one). If you like you may build your own secret underground headquarters provided, of course it has an unnecessarily elaborate killing device that is easily escaped from by secret agents you might capture after they've penetrated your "impenetrable" security system. . . . .

Anyone have a super betamax or hifi betamax for sale? I have tons of family/baby pics not able to play any longer. Have old SLH 950 I think, still packed away, no picture just alot of white noise. sound is ok. not sure what happened to it. some so called tech fiddled with tracking which is what he said was the problem. never got another picture back. I am dying to view baby films family etc. on old beta videos. Also have old Sony Betacam 550 CCD not working and sony 8mm video cam, needed $300 "fixing" some ccd stuff, willing to offer up in trade/deal/partial payment, open for offers- really want another betamax hifi player. My original first sony betamax was stolen from old home, along with my baby's first Christmas tape in it, needless to say it killed me, paid over $900 for that gorgeous machine, and my tape - well that was worth a million to me. thanks for reading... please email if in the southern California area.

In response to Roger Perry

Sanyo called their Beta VCRs Betacords sort of as a brand name thing. Sony had taken Betamax and the format is called beta so to distinguish their decks from Sontys and others they called them Betacpord. Sanyo did not introduce Super ZBeta in the US. Sony did Sanyo made 1 SuperBeta VCr (which I bought when it was new at a grocery store!- it was on sale there fro $100 less than it cost at a video store I had been contemplating buying it at a couple days earlier.) This was the last Beta Sanyo made before dumping them. All Sony decks since about 1985 have been SuperBETA.

The ED Beta decks were answered in response to the Super VHS ones. They were much better. In demos I saw at the Consumer Electronics Show, Sony had demo ED BEta tapes of things with lots of reds in them while VHS makes had S-VHS decks with blues and greeens- reds being harder to reproduce. The decks were always very pricey and the tapes were also expensive. $25 for an L-500. I have never owned one. But I have seen them. They were backwards compatible with Beta and Super Beta although they would not record in Beta 1.

I bought a loading mech for a sl-f30AS (same machine) just 6 months ago from Sony Australia, who had a fair few left in stock, it came in actually labeled as being for one of the NTSC equivalent models, just ask sony, they still stock them.

Hope this is off some help

O.K., I am hoping someone out there can help....I just received a two video set I purchased from the U.K., I tried to watch it and all I get is heavy snow and voices that sound way too high and fast. I noticed on the order confirmation it says these videos are in PAL format and will need to be copy/converted to NTSC before use.? What in the heck does this mean? I hate to sound Naive, but I thought videos were videos no matter where they came from. Hopefully I did not waste my money? Thanks for the help!

Stacy,Unfortunately all videos are not the same! Here in the UK, our TVs use 625 lines rather than American 525 lines, so your tapes were PAL (European sustem rather than NTSC (American) system. Also, the frame rates on film and TV are different between the UK and US.Sorry, but you'll either have to find a multistandard machine or see if someone can convert them for you.

As a postscript to the earlier mails on Betacam tapes, not only are they perfect (Betacam runs 6 times the speed so a 30 min tape will run for 3 hours on a Betamax machine, but also the tape mechs are superior and handle repeated shutting to and fro (for instance, whn editing) much easier.if you have a friendly TV/video producer, you may be able to get soem used ones very cheaply.Regards, David.

Sorry about my dodgy spelling earlier!!A quick hint for Beta fans in the UK: you may find schools with Betamax equipment. This last weekend, I just bought a camera setup with F1 recorder, timer, twopower packs, lots of bits and leads and 42 tapes for £100.The crazy thing is, that the school was going to chuck it all in a skip!!!!!!If you have any friends acquaintances in the educational field, maybe try putting out feelersand see if there are any Beta machines sitting lost and lonely in a cupboard in a school. You'll also find loads vintage computers, if that's your thing (usually BBC model Bs).Incidentally, does anyone have a Sony PCM F1 (working, natch) for sale?I already use a PCM601 for stereo digital mastering, and it works perfectly with my C9 and C20 machines. I'd like to be able to do location recording with the F1. Ta in anticipation,David.

I have an opportunity to buy about a dozen Sony super BetaMovie camera/recorders, with cases. All seem in excellent condition. My motivation is to resell them. Does anyone WANT any of these? Is there a market for them? any idea of what they should go for in a price range? The seller is looking for $75/each, so in order for it to work for me, I'd have to be able to sell them for more (obviously). Thanks in advance for some feedback. (Format is NTSC I believe since I'm in USA). Email if you want to [email protected]

I have just been given a PAL beta made by Toshiba ( v8600 ) it has 4 heads and perfect pause!. However, it has a switch on the front called "quick select" Does anyone know what this does? Although this machine is a top loader and faily old. It is far superior to the Sony models of the time ( C5, C6)etc. It has infa red remote, multi speed in either direction and multi event timer! What happened Toshiba?

Having sadly given up on getting anything intelligent about obtaining separate Y/C output from a 950 (Bart and Homer, I'll explain it to you if you ask me nicely and provided you can cope with words of more than three letters). I have a (hopefully simpler) query. Does anyone know the pinout for the DIN socket on an SLHF100? I can't get anything that works in or out of it to SCART despite a lead alleged to be correct for that purpose, and which I hoped would be some help with my wiring spaghetti problems.

I lucked out and got a Betamax Sl-Hf1000 and it is a greatmachine. I had to have some repair work done to it and it plays and records great, but on some tapes I get blank drop-outduring play back. The picture just goe black for 30 seconds or soand then comes back. When I play the recorded tapes on my otherBetas they work fine. Any ideas as to whats causing this? Thanks. Beta is Better!!I really lucked out getting my SL-Hf1000. Person sold it to me for$25.00. What a find!!

Bill. I once made up a lead from an HF100 (7 pin multi to scart). As far as I remember only 4 wires were needed to obtain video and stereo audio output. On the scart side pins in are 20 (vid) 6 (audio L) 2 (audio R) 4 (audio earth). What I then did was first locate the audio left and right by trying them one at a time on the HF100 multi. It took a little while and may be I was lucky but it did work. On My C9 I still use an 8 pin to scart (4 wire) which is connected differently to the website, but arrived at in the same way. Hope this helps man!

PS The lead you was given may require you to plug in an aerial to the HF100 before it will work. If I remove the aerial from my c9 the AV signal vanishes (video & Audio)

Hi. I just bought a Sony Betamovie bmc110 at an estate sale. No charger, only 1 battery. Anybody have an idea where I can get a charger for this model? I don't even know if it works. I paid $50 for it, too much?? I've been anxious to get into Beta format for a while now. So this camera will not play the tapes, only record?

This is a great site, thanks in advance for the help !!

Dear Stuart,

with reference to your Toshiba V8600, check out http://www.palsite.info/v8600ovi.html as you say, it was a wonderful machine. Are you sure it was an infra-red remote?

hello Bart. Thanks very much for the tip, I'll try it. Since you only needed 4 wires, does that mean the audio earth is also used by video or wired together at the DIN end? I thought that the SCART standard needed a separate video earth. Still, if it works.......

Bill. Not sure about that. May be that's why you need the aerial plugged in as well. Like I say I may have been lucky. Did you try the lead you have with the aerial plugged in? You may also be interested to know although my TV has rgb input (in theory better than y/c) and my digital tv receiver has rgb output I don't use it as the colours are too rich and not adjustable. Maybe there were no TVs around in 1985 with y/c input ( S video) when the 950 came out, hence no y/c output on the 950.
