Oh yeah. HVC cameras have a built-in fuse. On the HVC-2200 I have it's under the left side panel. Might be different on a PAL camera.

I meant that there's power on the socket you plug the camera in...I've got a sony hvc-4000p..could it be that there are fuses inside the camera...?and I've got another question..you mentioned 3 fuses..but when I opened it before I only saw 2 near relais..where's the third?

Thomas,

You say there is 12V input to the F1 not the camera. There are three fuses in the SLF1. (801,802 and 803) I think you need to take the bottom plate off the unit, and with power removed, check with a multimeter on ohms range that they are all still conducting. That is about 0 ohms. (not blown) If they are OK, you really need expert help to get any further.

regards Noel.

Hi. I couple of broken Sony beta machines. I will start with the 2 SL-2300. I cleaned the head on one of them and that seems to work...but I really need some help on the 2nd one. Originally, when I put a tape in, it will play, rewind, or fastforward for only a second or 2 and then it stops. When ejecting, not all the tape rewinds. I cleaned the heads on this one too..and then checked pendulum. There was a very thin black belt that was broken into 3-4 pcs. I took this out and tried again. NOw, it will rewind & fastforward and when enjecting, all the tapes rewinds fine... but when playing & recording, it stops after a second or two.

I found this:

Stops in play or record

This is becoming a more common problem these days. The first thing to check is that there is adequate torque on the take up spool. If there isn't much then the cause is usually down to two contributing factors.

The first is the drive pendulum which can cease up and the second more serious factor, is wear on the reel motor bottom bearing. The pendulum is simple to replace but the bearing is moulded into the chassis and replacement necessitates that the entire chassis be replaced. One possible compromise is to fit a small piece of plastic into the bottom bearing to raise the rotor and allow it to move freely.

The problem I have now is... where in the world is the reel motor bottom bearing?? Can someone please help me?

Also, what was that thin belt that broke? How do I replace it?

Thanks, Nancy

Olive,

Thanks for providing the additional operational advice. I should have told Thomas that the +12.5Volts to fuse was supplied by a switched transistor circuit in the SLF1 so that power is not necessarily be there all the time.

Boby, You say he can't change a fuse - that's a bit harsh. OK on you normally running PAL.

To Thomas. If you're running the SL-F1 off a battery the camera won't turn on until you go into PLAY or REC or REC PAUSE or PLAY STILL modes. Sony does that to save battery power as the combo of camera and recorder would quickly burn down an NP1 battery.

If you're running off a SL-F1 /TT -F1 combo, you should have the input on the TT -F1 set to CAMERA. If running the VTR off an AC -F1 or other DC supply, you should have camera power.

Boby, OK, I don't have NTSC bits. But they are common in some areas or multisystem beta machines wouldn't exist. But HiFi machines are an exception. They don't come as multisystem. (because of the HiFi videohead differences)

Thomas, You might have to confirm your camera itself is actually working by connecting it to another machine with a camera input if you can. See models Sony SLC5, SLC7 or SLC9.

The camera may have a fault in the vidicon or in the B+W display. I would have thought a record LED might have lit up though.

On the machine SLF1 side, from the circuit layout of the Power supply board, I can see there is a 1.25Amp fuse F802 in the line supplying 12V to the camera connector. The fuse is located near the centre of the main board at the rear of the machine between Delay line DL2 and shift potentiometer RV7.

You could use a multimeter to check if the voltage is present at the connector or to check if the fuse is blown.

Hope this helps, regards Noel.

Why yes there is total incompatibility with the broadcast Betacam format and the consumer Betamax format. The L-750 tape that gets from 90 minutes at BI or 4 1/2 hrs on BIII gets only 30 minutes on Betacam and Betamaxes cannot handle that.

Even more unhandlable is Betacam's RGB componant output formating. Betamax is a Y-C composite output format.

I have advertised it as the only PAL Super Beta Hi-Fi model available thinking at the time that this was genuinely the truth. Beta spotted on TV!

This weeks episode of That 70's Show--- to run Tuesday in Canada and Wednsday in the US fetures two Beta decks. The first is the 5x00 one in the Foreman;s house which could actually now exist since we are allegedly in 1979, the first time it appeared to tape Roots it had not yet been invented. Although it did lead to the classic line "we're better than everybody else we have a Betamax" The second is a front loader- lloks like a Sanyo whihc of course would not come out for a few more years.

To rEjECT902: er: SL-HF750 issues.

Remove the top cover of the unit. Load a tape and watch to see if the tape is tread all the way to the back of the drum where the erase head is situated. This is where is should stop when loading a tape. Press the Unload button and watch the action of the tape and the linear skate assembly/with tape tray for any unusual action. The motor for the skate assembly lies to the right of this assembly under a small sheet metal cover (it can be removed to view the worm gear used to transfer the motion. It should show some black gear grease on it.

With the tape removed and power off, you can pull the skate assembly out and watch the tray raise as it is pulled out. It should be smooth in action when pulling out and pushing back in place.

On some units the tape does not always sit fully back in the tape tray and the lip of the tape gets caught a little when it closes. I'm not sure why this happens and on one of my units I just check that the tape is fully seated before I hit the close button.

Also, the RMT-143 remote is hard to find and parts are not available for repair. I have one of these remotes but use it sparingly. Usually I use a universal programmed remote; although it lacks the special functions for timed programming, setting the clock, and indexing functions.

I hope this is of some help.

Boby,

Check the board number on your reel board for the 860D that needs replacing. I have a new board labelled No A4910 063A which is very similar to the HF 950 reel motor board but has a 5 pin connector instead of a 4pin. (The 950 has a board No. A4910 063B) The A version might be off an NTSC HF750 I dont know. I traced the circuit and I could rewire it to work in the 950 but if it's what you need then we could do some trading.

It never ceases to make me smile when i see people asking for these 'miracle' adapters that allow a Beta tape to be played in a VHS machine...............Boy, if only technology was that simple. It seems they are getting confused with the VHS-C format (that tried to take on 8mm for being small and lightweight) and used a tiny cassette with an 'adapter' for playback in the standard VHS machine. Most are'nt aware that the Beta and VHS use totally different recording and playback systems so you would get no picture anyway:) ...........so for the uninformed THERE IS NO SUCH THING...................

Just so you know an SL-HF 950 is the PAL equivelent to the SL-HF 750 not the SL-HF 900. The PAL (and PAL/SECAM Ost) SL-HF 950 only offered 1 record speed like all other PAL Beta VCRs.

The Japanese version of the SL-HF 900 (also going by SL-HF 900) did actually offer 3 speed recording. Looking at some of the Japanese pages and it seems their SL-HF 705 (closest match to the 750) wasn't an exact match to the US or PAL 750/ 950 design, for example, the 705 located the audio level sliders under the transport controls instead of on the drawer like the 750 or 950.

All in all I'd rather have the 750.

Opinion Poll: Sony SL-HF750 vs. SL-HF900

I think it is interesting to compare these two "Dream Machines" from Sony. The SL-HF900 was made in 1985 with a nice jog/shuttle wheel on the machine, but not on the remote (RMT-125). It could not record in BIs, although the UK version ( SL-HF950 ) can (and the SL-HF900 can be modified to do it). On the other hand, the SL-HF750 made the following year does not have the jog/shuttle on the machine, but it can record in BIs and has a very nice remote (RMT-143) with the jog/shuttle on it.

All things considered, one would think that the SL-HF750 (with RMT-143) would be worth more than the SL-HF900 (with RMT-125), but this does not seem to be the case. For example, Mr. Betamax sells the SL-HF750 for $ 200 less than the SL-HF900. Seems like the SL-HF950 has the best of both. I'd be interested to hear your opinion of these "Dream Machines."

Woody: Sounds like after the cassette drops down, the machine is trying--but failing--to thread the tape. The sound you're hearing is probably the sound of the loading/threading motor. There are a number of possible causes (e.g., broken gear, obstructed part), so you will have to take the top off and see what is (or is not) happening. If you can't tell what's wrong, post some digital pictures so we can perhaps see the problem.

I'm sure this is gonna sound familiar to everyone else, but the sluggy Sanyo M20 probably has worn idler tyres and maybe the drive belt. Might also be back tension problem. I used to do a trick with getting the back tension right on Sanyo by loosening the back tension clamp that held the felt and tin tension strip, then pushing the tension arm towards it's limit and tightening the back tension grip screw. It worked well enough for the VCR 4400 I used to have in the 90s.

Check this page on how to service the idler tyres...

Did someone mention that the Olive Thomas classic silent flics may be available on Beta? If so, I'm looking for 'Daughter of the Sheik" circa 1923. Thanks for your consideration. Tom

I think many people over estimated the effect of quality would have on the consumer. I have copies of several old issues of the Videophile Newsltter - where one of the ongong debates in the letter columns was wether the publc would ever accept the lower quality of a Betamax pic (which was ~$25 for a 1 hour tape) when for only $15 more they could get the much superior quality of a Umtaic tape. There was also the factor that the Umatic VCR was much more than the Betamax one.

Also I have a suspicion that the Olive Thomas who posts here is not the actress who died ~80 years ago- if she somehow was I would think she'ld be hawking copies of her movies in Beta :)

Hi, I'm doing some research about Betamax and VHS, and I'm trying to figure out what are the true factors that affected the Betamax vcr and decreased its populartiy compared with VHS. I'm quite sure it's not the price, since both products had a similar price at the peak of their populartiy ( mid 70's and 80's ). I'm also sure it's not the product because we all know that Betamax has a far better quality over VHS. So, if somebody knows some details about the history of Betamax, please let me know. Thanks.

Hi!

I’m writing from France so excuse me if my English is not that good :-).

I have an old SL-C6F (the SECAM SL-C6 ) out of order and I’d like to repair it (I have some knowledge in electronics but I’m not a VCR expert!).

Here is the trouble: when I switch on the general power switch of the back panel, the clock switches on and blinks as it should, leading me to think the power supply works (or at least a part of it). When I push the « ON/STANDBY » button, nothing happens. The associated LED doesn’t light on and the VCR remains in STANDBY mode.

I’ve checked the two fuses of the power panel and they are OK. The « ON/STANDBY » switch itself is OK too and it’s connection to the power panel as well.

Can anyone give me a clue? I guess there’s no SONY service manual available on the net for this model?

Thanks in advance for your help! :-)

Kind regards,

Thierry

PS: if you give me an answer via email, change the end of my address by removing the 4 X of the domain name ;-)

I have bought 3 500's, and two had bad ACE heads despite being in mint or near-mint condition. I don't know whether that's a failing of this model or my bad luck. It might be the latter because, although I don't have complete info on this, I think the 500 uses the same ACE head as the 300.

I agree about the 300. In my opinion, for what it cost at the time it was sold, it was the best VCR ever built. I own 5 (a lifetime stash), but I have encountered several others for a total of about nine - not a one had anything wrong with it mechanically or electronically. They're rocks. Their knock is lack of special features. I use mine to watch movies and record TV programs. I'm glad Sony put the money into the guts. Frankly, I just don't "see" the Solarization feature as something any VCR needs. The picture is sharp and crisp, tracking and picture controls are tight, and I have yet to toss it a SuperBeta tape it can't handle.

I've seen several of those on eBay over the years. Good choice for an everyday use Beta VCR. Basic reliabilty of the SL-HF 300 with some step-up features like being able to advance or decline frames whilst in pause mode. If I ever have to replace my SL-HF 300 I'll probably get a 500.

Of course the all-black model is no where near as rare as the all-silver model The Snail managed to fob off on some unsuspecting soul a few moons ago. It was apparently an SL-HF 500 given a silver SL-HF 300's top cover and face plate but with an SL-HF 500's silver flipper door.

It's funny that eBay now "translates" pages from Australia and the UK and even offers the opportunity to view the results in their native language...

BTW it looks like the BNC connectors have been replaced with standard RCAs. Am I to presume BNCs have been dropped on some equipment in the UK?

The reels move but the tape don't move ?? How can the reels turn but not the tape ??

Ah ! I guess you mean the reels turn when there's no tape in. Most probable cause of this problem is a worn idler tire. Take this opportunity to replace the whole belt kit.

Hi...I have a Toshiba V-M41 that loads, plays, and unloads perfectly. However, it does not Rewind or Fast Forward. The reels move correctly, but the tape won't move. Is this simply a matter of replacing the rubber tires, or could it be something else? Thanks,Sam

To Paul - sounds like maybe a back tension problem or dirty ACE head. Also should check the reel drive belts and idler tyres.

This fellow has a brief guide to service Sanyo Betas...

BTW - to the PALsite maintainers, this link supercedes the one you provide in the Sanyo technical pages.

Hey guys, me again [ :) ]. Just got a copy of The Sims 2 and have been trying to make a beta deck to import into it. Think I could give my Sims something like the SL-HF300 since it's pretty simplistic in design. Any else try this at all?

I am in Skokie, Illinois and I have a single Betamax cassette which may have an interview with my mother who died at 92 this January 9th and I am trying to find a betamax machine to look at the tape to see what if anything is on it. I wrote "mom" on it. So, the chances are good that there is something I want to copy to a DVD. Is there anyone in the Chicago area (Skokie) with a Betamax who will run the tape for me. A guy in the photo department in one of Skokie's Wallgreen's say they can copy a Betamax. Does anyone doubt that?
