Sounds like you have an SL-8080 or SL-8000. You'd just need the same standard A/V cables (and maybe a BNC adapter) you'd have for connecting your DVD or VHS deck to your TV set. Beta VCRs are pretty much the same connectively as any other video componant although the 'SCART' multibus connector doesn't seem to have been used on many if any Beta decks.

Hi,i have a number of beta tapes |I want to turn into DVDs. I have a sony model rather big and old fashioned cassette type keys for operation. How can I connect to transfer the images to create DVDs. What wires do I need and where do they go to? Is there some sort of kit available for such transfers and can it be used for VHS as well?Any help greatly appreciated

Are there any websites out there with downloadable PDF files of Beta service manuals? I have several machines to repair so these would be very handy.

Alternatively, if anyone has any originals for sale, please let me know.

I'm mainly looking for PAL format, being in the UK.

Short answer - I think it's the TV. Regarding the dots across the bottom of the screen, have you connected the VCR to another TV? I see this too with the HF500 I use with a small Sharp TV, but there is no such problem when I play the same tape on the same machine using my ancient, early 1980's Mistubishi TV. Interestingly, I also have a JVC TV from around 1984 that still displays a perfect picture from broadcasts and laser discs, but with signals from VCR's, the bottom 10-15 lines show what should be at the top of the screen - I think this is the same problem, except that when it's only one or two lines at the bottom, all you can see is evidence of the electron gun scanning the screen and cannot make out that you are actually seeing what's supposed to be the top line of the screen image.

Olive,

That is becoming more common now. Cleaning away the residue (plastic dust) from the gear and metal shaft roughed up section then using super glue and clamping the gear while it sets can fix them. But they usually sound quite loud from then on due to the tooth spacing varying. Still, better a noisy loading beta than a dead one.

A lot of loading gears in Beta VCRs seem to go bad when the bottom-most pilot gear splits.

Max & Noel,

Thanks for the helpful replies.

The switch at the back mentioned by Noel seems to be a Mode Lock and only works in conjunction with the remote which I do not have.

Yes the pulley revealed itself when the "lid" was off. A little help made it spring into life. The mechanism is still somewhat temperamental, sometimes only working after switching off at the rear and then switching on again. Once the cassette tape wraps itself around the tape head it seems to play OK. Where I go from here, not sure.

Madness,

I wonder if it has anything to do with an incorrectly set video heads switching point. (A to B) You will need a CRO and the right playback test tape to confirm the setting.

Probably is an electronics problem. Worn heads would show a overly staticy picture that tracking won't fix.

Does anyone know why 2 out of every 3 Sony SL-2400 series machines have the same problem of full screen video noise every 3-4 seconds with constantly garbled audio? I don't think it has to do with alignment or the ACE because this is a sterotypical problem that is the exact same in all the machines. Is there something that can be done short of replacing all the electrolytic capacitors?

Hey guys, tis me back from a long hiatus. Got a minor problem w/ one of my HF300 's that I can't figure out. Play any tape in it, and there's a what looks like a grey dotted line moving across the very bottom of the screen from right-ro-left. Maybe just the bottom 2-3 lines. Tracking won't cure it and neither did a complete head & path cleaning (the pro way). Also tried a new pinch roller, but no go there, either. I know it's not any of the tapes since none show this symptom when played back in any other deck. This deck in question did get a lot of use recently since I've been using it to transfer the more precious tapes in my collection to a DVD recorder. Possible this might be an early sign of aging video heads?

Shaun,

The SLO1700 has a switch on the back which can be set "remote or local" Move it back and foward and leave it on local. I had one of these and didn't even know the switch was there until I got a service manual. That ended up being the cause of my lack of response from the front panel controls.

Good luck!

Shaun...I have never seen a SLO-1700 in person, but I have an SLO-1800, which is NTSC and is a front-loading SuperBeta. However, if the SLO-1700 is a top loader, I would think that you could remove the cassette cover (isn't it just screwed on?) and the outer casing. It could be that things got a bit jammed up during shipping, and now you need to take it apart and put it back together. This manuever itself can "fix" lots of mechanical problems. Even if the top doesn't open with the EJECT button, you should be able to see and manually turn the motor belt that controls the top...Good luck, Max

I have just purchased a Sony Beta HiFi PAL Stereo SLO-1700 VCR on ebay as in working condition It switches on, all lights illuminate. However, when I press the eject button, the light on the switch lights whilst it is pressed, the left hand spool spins momentarily, but the the mechanism does not open the loading/unloading bay (it is a top loader). Until I can get past this I cannot test any of the other functions wind/rewind, play etc.

Is there a transit lock that keeps this closed or does anybody have any suggestions?

I'd ask the chatpage guys to remove your loser posts 'Bill' but then how could you get the endless pleas of assistance from the relatives of deposed African dictators who now need your help to shuttle ill-gotten millions into an overseas bank account.

By the way if you get an email from some account manager with an inactive account that turns out to belong to someone who died in a tragic car crash with no next of kin and he needs you to stand in as such - well those are actually legitimate. Clear $6 million the last one I helped out on...

I have a EV-C3E video 8 player. All the displays are well and it accepts the tape. Then when I want to start play or rewind or so it does not react. The system shuts down after approx 6 seconds. Then I have to go standby and on before I can eject the tape.Is there anyone that had the same problem and a possible fix. The little motor for the winding works and sometimes it may even rewind for a while. Can my tapes be sticky or what?thanks in advance, Erik

Olive,

Fair comment on the back tension. Another thing about tape wear might be the constant tape to head contact in Beta rewind and fast forward modes. (except on the Sanyos)

I had already read about the 2 Heads on NTSC VS 4 heads on PAL for HiFi but had not thought about how it affects the trick play modes. PAL HiFi doesn't work on those modes anyway but to implement the "perfect play" they do have an extra videohead chip (like in the SLC9 ) and they may not have been able to implement that in NTSC because of the HiFi considerations.

As far as Beta versus VHS I still think it mainly came down to marketing and who got in first with video librarys.

regards Noel

It all comes down to your television. It sounds you may have connected it right but haven't tuned your television to the right channel. Most Betamax recorders use UHF channel 30 or 31 to send signals. Grab your television manual and check how you can tune a preset to a channel. If your television has A/V or Line inputs, it would be much better to connect your Betamax to those. You can use normal RCA leads to do that. You'll probably only get sound on one side of the telly, I don't think your Betamax was stereo. When you copy to VHS, you should really use the Output line connections, it will give you a much better picture.

I need some advice if anyone can help. I have a Sanyo VTC5000 Betamax Video 1980 version and cannot for the life of me figure out how to wire it into my television. I am obviously doing it all wrong!! At the back you have the input/output connections and the av connections. I am wiring the telly up with the aerial going into the av socket and another lead going from the other av socket into the telly. All I get is a blank blue screen. I may have it wired up right but not tuned in correctly and I dont know how to do this either as I have not got any instructions. I am from England so if anyone knows how to do this with an English TV please let me know as I have some old tapes of me and my grandand when I was little and would love to watch them again and to transfer them onto VHS for my mum. I would really appreciate some advice!! Thanks a lot. Abby

An old service tech on Yahoo's Old VTRs chatpage noted that one problem associated with Beta vs. VHS is that Beta uses more back tension than VHS resulting in more stretch wear on the tape.

It should be noted that in NTSC Beta HiFi is laid with the same heads as the video heads which meant that NTSC HiFi units could get away with being 2 head units - at the expense of being able to offer trick play features on all HiFis.

To get HiFi on VHS and PAL Beta you needed separate heads (which is probably why there weren't as many PAL Beta HiFi units). This forced all VHS HiFi units to be 4 head VCRs which meant trick play features could be offered more economically as a bonus to HiFi.

David,

You raise an interesting point. Speaking for PAL system from my experience. The differences between VHS and beta in relation to HiFi tracking for tapes recorded on other machines come down to the following issues I believe.

1/ Beta machines do not have auto tracking. Most VHS HiFi machines built in the past 15yrs do. The Beta operator has to be more aware and set it for each tape. (I know I forget)2/ Beta prerecorded tapes are most likely older than the VHS prerecorded tapes you are comparing them too. This means they may have been played more or would be more likely subjected to moisture, contamination and physical breakdown of the binding material. The tape itself is identical.3/ Tape magnetic print-through (caused the averaging of magnetic energy between adjacent sections of tape when the tape is left idle for a long time) The older the tape recording the more likely this has happened. It can affect picture so I am sure it can affect HiFi.

I don't know of any other reasons why there should be a difference between HiFi Beta & HiFi VHS.

NTSC - that's another story. Any ideas Olive?

One reason for Beta's failure is one nobody mentions--the compatibility issue. I have continual problems with playing tapes made on other machines, especially prerecorded tapes. The better quality of Beta is moot when your picture is breaking up or the hifi sound is sputtering. I believe VHS is more forgiving of differences.

Doc...please explain what you mean that "the VCR blew apart." Is it because you connected a Japanese (100 V, 50-60Hz) to 240 volts, 50 Hz in Australia? You could not have done this directly because the Type A Japanese plug won't fit directly into the Type I plug in Australia, so I assume you have an adapter that also acts as a step-down transformer. In any case, I would expect the VCR to blow a fuse rather that to blow apart. Please give us an update.

If you put the DVD disc into your computer DVD drive, you will see one or more VOB files. These files can be renamed into mpg files, and then can be burned to a new DVD using whatever software you have. (at least I HOPE Mac shows the file extensions on the VOB files. The ones you're looking for will generally be fairly large. If you can't do it on your Mac, I will volunteer my services to make a new disc for you.. no charge.

Mike,

You might be better off getting an SLF30E or SLF30AS from Australia or locally. They are the smallest profile and not to heavy. See http://www.palsite.com/slf30ovi.html weight 8.2Kg Not sure what cost postage is to NZ from Australia. The SLFI would be your only real option from UK anyway as their TV channels are different. Wider bandwidth / different sound carrier and colour? I don't know if that extends to changes in the SLF1s UHF TV O/P sound carrier frequency but I would expect so.

To Eject902 - No the V-BM37 didn't have autofocus. If the power zoom isn't working it could be that the drive belt is gone or a slip gear has a too-smooth friction plate - in order to prevent motor burn-out from holding down the zoom buttons too long the gear drive to the lens is on a slip gear that can keep going even if the lens can't. There's a small metal clutch plate in the works that holds the gear to the axle that can get too smooth and needs to be roughened up with a file or sandpaper.

You'll need to take off the cowling over the lens area to be able to sort that out.

Julian,

Roderick has given you some good hints regarding the capstan roller. Another thing which could be stopping the tape is excessive back tension. You should be able to see if there is any slack on the tension sensor lever.

I don't think it is your reel motor but a problem with the capstan and the pinch roller. The reel motor only picks up the slack tape after the capstan/pinch roller have pulled it past the heads. Who installed the new pinch roller and are you sure it is the right size? What you should check is that the roller actually presses against the capstan when in play mode. If it doesn't then it could be that the tape is not completely loaded, ie. it hasn't completed circling the head drum. Unfortunately my recently acquired SLO-420P isn't operational, yet, so I can't check what it should be doing. Maybe someone else with a C9 could give some hints?

Hello all. I'm spanish and will try to explain in english the problem I have.

I have and old SL-C9. It seems to work fine..., loads the tape, can rewind it or fastforward it, but when I press PLAY the tape does not move at all, and after 2 seconds it stops. I mean that the drum heads work fine (it rotates), the pinch roller is a brand new one, and the Capstan is running well, but it does not move the tape at all

The problem is like the right motor (for the tape) is not strong enough to move the tape.

Any help will be ok..

Thanks!

Okay - here's a solution if someone steals images from your eBay auctions and is stupid/lazy enough to simply link to them rather than d/l and host them himself.

This is not intended for children or those easily offended.

Trevor. Are you trying to connect using the antennae leads or A/V leads? In the US they make it easy by having RF modulators only use channels 2,3 or 4. On the SL-T50ME multisystem I have there's a European antennae lead and the RF modulator has a trimpot to select the channel between UHF channels 30 to 39. I'd peg it to the left or right ( 30 or 39) and tune the TV to fit if you can.

Otherwise of your TV has A/V connections you can go that route. Might need a BNC -> RCA adapter for the video output.

hi i wonder if anyone can offer me some advice on how to tune a betamax onto a sharp tv set which only seems to accept vhs vcr s?its very frustrating because ive got a whole load of betamax tapes that i want to wacth but my sharp tv wont pick up the betamax signal!!!!!!!help!!!!!!!!i recently threw out an old granada tv set which worked with my betamax vcr although the picture was often quite wobbly.it seems to me that tv manufacturers make tv set for vcr only these days, which is frustrating cause obviously there is a huge crowd out there that havent given up on the old betamax!!anyway please advise me if you can.thanks.

Stuart,

That type of video out connector is called PL-259 or "a UHF connector". What you need is a PL-259 to RCA female adaptor. The audio connection from this machine is a DIN plug, (from memory) so you might still have to get some qualified help with that unless you are lucky enough to have a lead already.

A freind of mine who has run a repair shop which has been an authorised Sony service center sice I met him has just received word that he will no longer be allowed to do warranty repairs for Sony equipment. This has alos happened to anoher Sony servicer he knows. This also means he is losing his account to get Sony oarts direct (he had been my source for blank tapes :( ) seems that Sony will now have anything smaller than a 32" TV shipped to ther service center in Texas, dealers who run their own repair shops wwill be allowed to work on big items, Last I heard their repair shops were not accepting Beta units since they were too old. Another friend of mine suggested that maybe Sony was getting rid of their authoised service centers since they had now progressed to the point where they only made things that never broke down.

I have an SL-HF 860 sittinga round and I recall when I was using it in the Chcago area it did get stations past 36 since the UPN oone ther is on 50 and I know it pickedd that up.

Hi, I have a Sony SuperBeta Hi-Fi SL-HF860D. A *very* nice machine, if I do say so myself. However, it has a few minor problems that I would like to see if I can repair on my own.

The main problem, is with the ejection system. Apparently, this is a known issue with these machines, the friend I got it from owned two of the same model. Had the exact same problem, and was able to get it repaired via a Sony dealer locally a few years ago. So, I know the problem can be repaired.

From what I have been told, the ejection system eventually begins to weaken, because of a design flaw, where the ejection motor rubs against the chassis of the machine, resulting in the motor becoming too weak to push a tape up and out of the machine. I would like to know, if there are any other models of VCR with a similar enough ejection system that I could salvage the parts I need, and if anyone has some schematics of how it all goes together that I could referr to?

As well, anybody who has experience repairing these machines and/or this specific problem who could help me, I would appreciate hearing from you.

The only other problem I have, is that the tuner in this VCR only goes as high as channel 36. Is there a way to get stations higher than that?

Thanks in advance for any help you may be able to offer. ^_^

Dan

Hi. I have just bought a Sanyo VTC5600P beta recorder, but without any leads. Does anyone know where I might buy a lead to enable me to connect to the Video Out of the machine? (This is a threaded female connector about 15 mm diameter, with space for a single pin in the middle).Any help would be most gratefully received.Stuart.

I am having problems with my Sony SL-C9E. Until last weekend it was working if I removed the cover and had a fan blowing cool air on it. It would work for 2-3 hours, then stop playing. Power stayed on. I had to unplug the power cord at night if I wanted to use it next day, always with the fan going. Now, power comes on, but I can't get it to play a tape. Can anyone shed light on the problem and are there people in Sydney, Australia, who can fix these machines?

Thomas,

OK, it's not easy to locate, took me half an hour with the circuit and layout. It is a 0.4Amp fuse and is on the output of a 5Volt regulator block DR801 around the centre of the main board. Next to potentiometer RV402. It is a small design probably soldered in. Probably not the fault or cause of the problem your looking for.

Hi all, I am experiencing problems with a Sony Superbeta HiFi SL-HF860D. The machine upon insertion of the tape it will not feed it in. If I do feed the tape in manually and push it down the tape unwinds properly, although when i push play the tape fast forwards for a bit and then stops. It will not eject properly either. Is this possibly an easy fix or should i get it repaired? Any feedback will be greatly appreciated. Thanks,Clyde

Thank you! I noticed that the BCT_XXMA's already have the holes punched to trigger the ED sensor, but the BCT-DXX's have a different configuration for those little popout tabs, which in their standard configuration do not trigger the ED sensor.

Will I have to actually cut that little bridge between the holes, or will removing the four popouts alone be sufficient to trigger the ED sensor?

Also, what's the time conversion factor for the digital betacam tapes? Is it the same multiplier of 6 as for the MA's and G's to convert size to BII time capacity? The reason I ask is that one of the digital betacam tapes I have is a 40, so if the conversion is truly the same, that would make those tapes almost 20% longer than the L-830's! That would be hard to believe.

I found a two of the digital betacams at a Goodwill yesterday, hence the questions. I don't normally use them. Thank you again.
