Greetings from the Rising Sun Empire..

Yep, I'm here in Japan once again. Been here since Monday.

Now, you would think that if there were any really great Beta finds to be had, this would be the place.. right? *Bzzzzzzzzzzt!* Wrong answer.

I have been to several secondhand places here (the largest and best stocked being a place called Hard Off, which is like a Japanese version of Goodwill as far as I can tell (at least in their sales tactics). Out of 8 places I've been to, I have found THREE Beta machines. Two are standard Beta, mono models, one of those is a top loader. The third is a 1980 (or thereabouts) vintage Beta Hi-Fi (no SuperBeta). My search (this time) for the Holy Grail thus ends.

My searching was not a total loss, however, as I did find a rather nice Pioneer multiplayer (LD, CD, VCD, etc) for which I plonked down the horrendous sum of 500 Yen (about $4.70) Another 100 Yen for a cord and 480 Yen for a used LD disc to check the thing out with, and I have the best LD player I've owned since they were new. Even plays both sides of a disc without turning it over.

For those of you planning a trip to Japan in the future, pay up your credit cards, and take out a second mortgage on your home. The average highway toll is $15, there are four or five toll booths between Narita airport and Hachioji, where I am, 70 miles NW of the airport (through Tokyo). An average meal (at other than McDonalds) will run between $15 and $ 30. A 500ml (about 18 oz.) bottle of water is about a dollar, gasoline for that rental car will run you around $5 a gallon... God only knows what the rental car would cost. A taxi between Hachioji and Yokota AB (about a 4 mile drive) cost me $35. You do the math.

Fortunately for me, I'm staying with a friend, so no expensive hotel, only the one cab ride, and she INSISTS on paying for everything (a Japanese cultural thing, not easy to get used to). I DID manage to cheat her out of paying for some meals by taking her to dinner on the air base, where she can't buy anything.. (evil grin)

Well, that last few paragraphs was OT, so I will get going now.

Sayonara!

Olive; You dont have to understand Chinese, just click the download button. Many PALM program are not freeware, meaning you have to pay for 20$ just for small software. What we have here is more than universal Remote. It's dynamic IRemote, you can create whatever remote you like, any shape you want.I used to have PALM, but I just got a new one (used)just for 10$.

The program works for all Beta Remote.(IR signal can be saved as Database for future use)

Today is a sad dayToday I sold my Beta . I had to sell my SLHF2100. I have worked in television broadcasting and knowing how good beta was and always will be I always wanted the best and Beta was it . I have been a loyal Beta owner for over 24 yrs . NEVER EVER owned or wanted VHS ! Beta was the way of making a statement for me. I have owned over a half dozen Beta machines over the yrs. The last being the the Holy Grail of Betas the SLHF2100! Beta will always be better because I know from experiance that the tapes I recorded in the 80's were just as clean and clear as the day they were recorded.I have a Betacamcorder from 1986 that is just as good stylewise and recording wise that i will never part with. The sad thing about Beta was that Sony screwed up and just didnt marketed it correctly. If they had we would be having them in our homes today. The other thing that didnt help Beta was they cost alot then and do today on Ebay. Just wanted to say that Beta was always better that VHS or ever S-VHS! I never wanted to put 8 hrs of crappy video on a tape never. I always wanted quality audio and video and Beta was the way to acheive that. But today as i prerpare to ship my Beta to someone else to have. I must admit I'm going to miss her. Because if there was one thing that I could count on for the last 24 yrs of my life being consistant is my Beta . BETA QUALITY OVER QUANITY WILL ALWYAS BE MY MANTRA AND BELIEF

A friend found this in an alley many years ago. It looked so lnice I thought I'd power it up and check it out. However I have too many projects and this has just sat around for years now. I will be glad to give it to whoever can use it just for the cost of shipping. I can send pics if you contact me. The front lens coating seems to have some issues.Richard

Ginny; The SL-5600 is a warren of belts and tyres. Luckily the bottom panel once unscrewed flips up easily to expose most of the key ones. I have the service manual to the SL-5400 (first of 3 in the SL-5xxx toploader series - yours is second in the line). I can go through it and scan pertinent disassembly pages for you.

Olive,

Thanks for the info. I don't usually browse the US ebay. There were some nice machines.

Yes even I have moved more to DVD media. I have plenty of tapes left. Got about 100 new and some single pass over the last year. That ED beta is a dream machine. Pity for me its NTSC. I am sticking with my 3 HF950s as the working machines for cinema playback / TV time shift and editing suite. The VHS machines I use ae Sony SLV-757 editing and SLV777 in other two locations. My last lot of music video clips for the pool room I did on DVD but I have to learn how to do chapters next time.

Boby,

I can't believe a SL-T50ME costs $895 same as the listed price for an 860D. They are both double or triple what I thought they would cost.

Here's a Beta that's worth the $400 start bid

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&&item=5783055206

EDV-9500 Extended Definition Beta (Metal tapes). Only Betacam and DV are better than ED Beta. However ED-Metal tapes are pretty hard to find new so you'd have to buy Betacam SP tapes.

A search on "Froogle" seems to indicate lowest price is about $8 - $10 per cassette.

http://froogle.google.com/froogle?q=Betacam+SP+small&btnG=Search+Froogle&scoring=p

DV media is down to $2.50 to $3 bux a tape

http://froogle.google.com/froogle?scoring=p&q=DV+cassettes&btnG=Search+Froogle

However DV VCRs are still in the $750 to $1000+ range with camcorders around $500+ bux...

http://froogle.google.com/froogle?q=DV+VCRs&btnG=Search+Froogle

Meanwhile this SL-HF 750 is up to $267 bux...

That one's the SL-HF 2100 - one of the last Betas designed by Sony. One of the few BIS recorders released to the US market. Same with that SL-HF 1000 model. Both of those were pretty much the best non-ED Betas ever built (along with the SL-HF 750). and they certainly had the most features available in any VCR format.

At the prices those still command, they're actually trying to compete with better formats like Hi8, S-VHS and even DV. Hell even DVD-R equipment has come down in price to the point that any advantages Beta might've held are outweighed by the considerable liablities such as limited repair support and difficulty in obtaining the consumables like blank tapes and camcorder batteries.

All the same, it's amazing that an 'obsolete' format can still fetch that sort of price.

The 950 heads were available in Australia last time I enquired for around $400Aus. The HF 150 heads should work on normal speeds but you lose the trick play slow motion modes. They don't have the split video head like the SLC9 (non-hifi) and HF950.

Good luck Brenda, I've got a 900 myself and It's great. I had Andy Sanchez turbocharge it, but to be 100% honest that was many years ago and I'm not sure he's still around. Finally got my long-awaited SL-HF900 yesterday.. it took a bit over two months to arrive. Seems to have made the trip more or less intact, however, the tracking is problematic, and it only played a â1 tape for a few seconds before ejecting it (it never played it again). I expect it needs a good cleaning of the transport, and possibly an alignment. We'll see.

Does nyone know if the heads for the SLHF 950 are still available. Got my deck back from the shop yesterday adn was told that the output on one head is about 1/6 that of the other meaning it has worn out. Having just lost his sony parts account he is unable to order trhough the most direct means although he said he still has access to their computer whihc tells him what is around- the part is still listed with a price but there are none in stock in Kansas Ciy- (there is another message if it is something tey never expect to hve again) which he siad could mean they are not being stocked in the US since there are not many of them over here, thus was wondering if thye are avialable in places whee PAL is used UK, Eurpoe Austrlia etc? Also it apears as if the points where I was getting no sound do have it but in order to hear it the tracking must be adjusted to a muh more precise point than with sound on the rest of the tape. Need to go back and find out if the last things I recorded are that way. Being in US use it for playback much more than recording since ther are no PAL signals coming at me over the ar or from outer space.

To Noel Higgins, You sound like your heart's in the right place, and you understand there is a place in the world for those who enjoy Beta players. In my case, a Beta VCR AND a Macintosh puts me firmly in the totally and blissfully insane corner! Anyway, my query is - like many others I am in the middle of transferring Beta archives to DVD and my machine has decided it does not want to thread the tape when loading. Thus I am looking for a repairer (in Melbourne) who knows what they are doing. Are you interested, or can you suggest a repair business that handles this format if you know one? Assuming the unit is repairable, once I finish archiving I intend to pass the machine on to another Beta owner as I will no longer need it (although it will be like saying goodbye to a loyal friend). Jamie, I've never heard audio from a linear stereo VCR, but I'm not sure about the quality since each channel track is half as wide as the standard mono track. Add the low tape speed, you might get relatively poor sound quality. I think these linear stereo units had some kind of noise reduction system à la Dolby, which I think is a matter of taste if you like or dislike. My Dolby experimenting is limited to compact cassette and I didn't like it very much as it cuts in the higher frequency range.

The 9500 seems to have a very similar layout to that of the 1000. I wonder if the 1000 could be modified with S inputs / outputs...

About my flaky keys, the front panel is well in place. Some keys work ok. I think the non working ones got that way because they are seldom used (I use the remote 99% of the time) and they must have gone dirty. The one key that I use the most, which is the eject key, works as new.

Olive, does the Betamax goddess (that would be you) have an index or front page more inclusive than the one I still have bookmarked? Mine's just got the three pictures of VCRs and the one of the acress who shares you name... "The Olive Garden of Earthly Delights" it's called... You seem to have extensive archives, I'm just curios what can be accessed.

I found the html of another lost old Betapage that I rather liked and since I had a lot of the images on file I thought I'd load it to my FTP space.

http://uk.geocities.com/olive_e_thomas/tonysvideopage.html

Contains full pages of his Betamax collection and of his video collection.

Hi Fellow Beta followers,

Just a quick question.... Is a linear stereo betmax model (eg. SLC40 ) much better than mono betamax ? as i am looking at buying an slc40, but already have an SLF60.

thanks

to homer, remove the front panel. Then try operating switches, with your finger. If for some reason. The front panel was not seated properly. The buttons will not actuate the switches properly, when pressed. It just seems unusual that ALL of the switches are troublesome.

Does anyone know if tact switches could be cleaned or otherwise fixed ? It seems one of my VCRs has almost all its front panel buttons either unresponsive or flaky. Could something be done with them besides replacement ?

To Chris...

Here are a few good articles on Betamax

http://AroundCNY.com/technofile/texts/howbetadied.htm

http://www.r-vcr.com/~television/TV/betamax.htm

If you're having trouble viewing the page I've set up a mirror version...

http://uk.geocities.com/olive_e_thomas/Betamax.html

Essentially the story boils down to a string of bad marketing decisions on Sony's part, the home recording lawsuit, and the ability of VHS to get more licensees on startup as well as the longer tape time - and resultant cheaper operating costs of VHS that ultimately did Beta in.

NEED INFO ON HISTORY OF BETA: I'm writing a book that includes descriptions of products that although superior, failed due to marketing miscalculations. Needless to say I want to include the Beta story. Would anybody who knows about the marketing mishaps related to Beta please e-mail me. The book is almost complete, but my editor agrees that we should include the Beta story. Look forward to hearing from anyone with insight into the issue. Thank you... Chris Denove

There was a point during the McCarthy witch hunt era when people finally got it that Senator McCarthy was an asshat. Mike you've just passed that point. Boby is a much loved friend of this board and you're way out of line snapping at him. If it hadn't been clear before, it should be clear now that you are not welcome here.

Rest assured that you've been reported to the board moderators and to AOL as well.

The remote in that auction is worth more than the actual SL-F205 (Japanese version of the SL-S600) on offer.

If you "walk" the images on that second URL you get a lot of nice piccies of that fellow's pet rabbits. The folder I saved his webpix in is actually called "Bunnies 'n Betas"

It's more important on VCRs that go outdoors and come back in. Changes in temperatur/humidity can cause moisture to condensate on the video heads and other metal parts. Needless to save this has the potential to damage tapes and machine. Many Sonys had a DEW light in their flourescent displays. The SL-2000 had a built in heater to warm up the video head drum if there was a danger of dew condensation.

Regarding the Sanyo VCR-3, folks on Ebay selling Sanyo Betas sure like mentioning the 1984 LA Olympics stickers. They think that sticker makes their VCRs rare and valuable, when in fact I've seen very few Sanyos that didn't have one.

I have several Sony Betamax and Sanyo Betacord VCRs. The Sanyo units have dew indicators, but the Sony units do not. Also I don't see many references to dew with VCRs made after the mid 1980s or so. Why was keeping an eye on dew so important to early VCRs and why is there no reference to it with today's VCRs? Just curious.

Contribute something useful to PALSITE like your absence for instance. People don't mind hearing opinions - that's fine. BUT, they don't having your opinions rammed down they their throats. I agree with Sean. You could do with a little more compassion. Some people are not perfect like you.

to adm222, How long have you been using this machine. I think you will have to get the ACE head assembly changed. If you make a recording and play it back, at the beg/mid/end of the tape what is the Beta Hi Fi sound like?.known good tapes Should play back ok. Its only when you have replayed a new recording that you will get this sound problem.A lot depends on the condition of the ace head. Part No is A6761093A it fits SLHF 950 /E/ESGetting this part maybe difficult, and even more difficult getting it fitted, so that, your machine will playback, both old recorded tapes, as well as new recordings.

Have recently been copying some stuff with my SL HF950 and come acros a werd problem and was wondering if anyone else has ever had a similar one and if so knows the cause and fix? At ponts where I have made an edit- come out of pause- when I play the tape back there are several seconds during whihc the audio on the HiFi track will not play back- all is silent- linear is OK. This has been happening on a regular basis. Very weird, ther is no problem in terms of the picture being jittery when I come out of the edit.

I'm in Honolulu, Hawaii and my PAL 220volt Sanyo VTCM10 has just started eating tape. From what I've read since the breakdown, particularly on Colin99.co.uk's webpages, my machine may need more repairing than I first thought.

So... can anyone sell me a really good condition PAL 220volt Beta VCR?

In fact, I just need the player section to be very OK (no need for the tuner or recorder).

This board goes absolutly CRAZY if they find a "SNAIL" over charging for a Betamax..

I bring up VCRGARY and not a word, not even from the mouth of Olive who in the past had many nasty things to say about him.

I'm just the messenger. Let's all get together and get rid of more of these snails and dishonest sellers that you all constantly talk about but are for some reason now silent.

The silence makes me believe this board has lots of snails and crooks under different names.

To Jean-Pierre: Scanning a service manual to PDF would require a considerable amount of time and trouble to be asking someone to do it for free - and service manuals are not the easiest thing in the world to scan. There are a lot of oddly-sized foldouts to contend with. You'd be better off looking for an online place that sells service manuals because I doubt someone will be willing to scan all 200 or so pages of an EDV-9500 service manual for free.
