Howdie.I wonder if anyone can help.Have just received a SONY C7 from my dear old gran. But unfortunatley when in playback the picture "shakes" for a few seconds then clears. This is most annoying and am sure that this is a small problem that can be easily rectified. If anyone can offer assistance,it would be most appreciated, and naturally i would owe that person a pint!!! Many thanks,Neil.

To Joplinbeta: Does it drop the cassette into the compartment or is it spitting it it right back at you?

I can think of a few problems offhand...

One of the gears on the loading gear assembly has cracked and when it tries to engage the loading ring it slips. This is a fairly common problem.

It might also be that the tape detector leaf switch in the cassette well has become bent or the peg that comes in contact with the cassette is broken. There was a thread relating this problem a few weeks ago.

The PAL equivelent of this model was the SL-F25. There is a technical reference to a similar problem

http://www.palsite.com/slf25tech.html

"Failure to load a tape

This is usually caused by a damaged carriage. However, if you are lucky then it may just be the plastic arm which stops the tape being inserted correctly that has become lose. Look for a white plastic arm on the right hand side of the carriage. "

To Sean:

Many thanks for listing the obituary of Gary Inkman AKA "VCR Gary". I bought a number of items for my studio from him, including a great Betacam SP Edit Player with noiseless slo-motion playback. In fact, I had done a search for him a couple months ago as I was in the market for a couple of professional monitors for out DVCAM Edit bay. It's too bad he appeared to have died so suddenly. He was a good guy to buy from and his prices were not out of line. Dave A.

My 1985 vintage SLHF100 has suddenly refused to switch out of AV mode into either tuner or simul modes. In all other respects it still works normally. While it's not life or death, I had wanted to use it with a computer for off-air recording in a different room from my SLHF950. It's not a display problem, it is genuinely ignoring the tuner.

There is a suggestion on the tech section on this site - "Check resistor R040 and transistor Q66 [25A1175] on panel YC28" - but that's for the reverse problem - refusal to go into AV mode.

I do have a transport-defunct S-VHS machine which I could use as a tuner, but that means yet more cables and boxes!

I'd be very grateful if anyone out there could help.

Hi there Beta fans ! , I have just become the owner of a Sanyo 5150 , nothing new there you all say , I myself must have bought and sold over 40 in the last 18 months , however this one is a little difrent being badged as a VAD-1 on the front panel , on the rear it says 5150 . It is a UK assembled machine . I wondered if it was a "special" model number for a rental outlet or something like that ? can anyone tell me about its origin ?. The machine is mint and in perfect working order after the usual idler repacement etc ! , it's for sale if anyone would like it ? . Please Email if you can tell me anything about it !

Having had no success in locating an IC for my SL-HF860D, I am interested in buying a parts machine. If anyone has an SL-HF860D that may have other issues but has a working clock display, which they would like to sell for a reasonable price, I would appreciate being contacted at my e-mail address: [email protected]. I would hate to throw away an otherwise good machine, in which I have already replaced numerous parts and only need an IC to operate the display. Also, any suggestions would be appreciated.

I have a large collection of beta tapes, that contain a variety of programs that I recorded, including movies, made-for-TV-movies, TV shows, commercials, news, music videos (MTV when MTV broadcast music videos), and many other TV specials. I also have a Sony SuperBetamax SL-100 VCR which I believe needs minor repairs (and a good cleaning). Finally, I have a Sony SuperBeta movie camera, preserved in a case I purchased for it at the time I bought the camera. I am looking to sell this collection as a whole or in lots and want to post this here before I go off to e-bay and other venues. Please e-mail me if you are interesting in any of these beta products, I hate to part with them but it's time to move on.

Sarah;Have you checked Rubber Belt (inside the Machine /can be found on the lower deck).Rubber elasticity decrease due to aging. On the picture problem you can clean the Rotary Drum (Shinny metallic cylinder on the upper deck) by using NonResidual Spray (Carbondioxide Spray Can)/Cheap Video Head cleaner. If you can clean the Head manually use high grade Alcohol with cotton bud.(Do not touch the Head Eye;it is fragile);at last Clean the Tape Path along the way. This standard procedure usually helps.

I am following up my message of October 5th regarding a microprocessor for my SL-HF860D. Since posting my original message, I have learned that this is the IC that controls the clock display and that the Sony part number is 875994260 (description number MB88551-271N). Unfortunately, since Sony has discontinued this item, I seem to be out of luck unless I can find a used one that still works.

miha, it looks like you can connect these speakers using three stereo 1/8" to RCA cables. Usually, on the motherboard the green connector is for the front channels, the black one for rear channels and the yellow one for sub/center channels, yet you should check the user manual to make sure. Then there should be some software program to configure the sound adapter with the appropriate number of channels.

By the way, this looks like a nice motherboard.

There may be nothing wrong witht the chrage. I know that newer NP-1 batteries look identical to the old ones but have some type of internal differences which makes it impssible for them to be chraged in Beta portable decks. These batteries are used in professional equipment whihc does not require these extra bits and is why Sony was still making them a few years ago.

Does anyone have the schematic for a Sony AC-220? This was an AC adaptor/battery charger for the portable Sony SL-2000 Beta VCR.

I don't think the capstan motor is the problem. It may be something to do with your computer setup - especially if what your saying is that everything you play yo your computer sounds like the out-of-sync dubbing of those 1970s kung-fu and Godzilla movies.

The capstan motor is what drives the videotape past the video and audio heads. Since it's located at the end of the head chain any defect in its operation would affect video and audio equally. Since (as you say) you can play tapes on your TV OK that would root out a capstan problem.

You might check and see if you've got the audio monitor-out switched properly. (should be the "Stereo" setting in the area under the flipper door (assuming yours isn't one of the million or so SL-HF 300s that lost their flipper door ) if you're playing back HiFi recordings (green HiFi light will be lit).

Hello all. I realize I don't post here often any more, but I still hunt down Betamax VCRs at every opportunity. The reason I'm posting is to let everyone know that I have solved a resounding mystery that has been nagging at me for several months. What the Hell happened to VCRGary??? It would appear that he is dead. He dropped off of ebay, and all his web sites went down. He stopped answering his phone. I googled the handle "VCRGary" and came up with nothing useful. Finally, I Googled his given name, Gary Inkman, and turned up the following:

http://www.ocregister.com/ocr/2005/05/01/sections/local/obituaries/article_502758.php

If it asks you to "register" go instead to http://www.bugmenot.com/ and follow the process there to avoid theft of your information.

I still wonder what happened to all the ED-Beta stuff he was sitting on...

A few months ago I purchased a Sony Betamax SL-HF860D on Ebay. It's condition was misrepresented by the seller. Although appearing to work initially, I soon discovered that this unit needed extensive repairs. The TV and VCR repair shop was able to find most of the needed parts. Unfortunately, it still needs a microprocessor, and Sony no longer sells this part, and the shop has exhausted its other sources as well. Therefore, I am hoping that someone on this site may be able to refer me to a source for the needed microprocessor. Failing that, I would like to know if the microprocessors in other Sony Betamax models might be compatible with the one in the SL-HF860D. I have an SL-HF70 that has other issues, but the microprocessor appears to be in operating condition. Any help of advice will be greatly appreciated. Please reply directly to my e-mail address.

The leaf switch than can be removed via one screw. So that is probably the record leaf switch. My unit does not record as well as only plays for a short while. DewarsThere are 3 'leaf spring switches' in any Sanyo front loading Beta and two for a top loaderThe 1st is located near the pinch roller at the front edge of the left spool and it's purpose is to shut off the loading ring motor when it reaches the full loaded (tape threaded) position. The problem you would have if this was damaged would be the tape ring loading motor would over run.The second one is located in the left hand side next to the left spool and this detects when a cassette has been loaded into the machine (it's a mechanical one for a top loading Sanyo's usually gold in colour). The problem you would have if this was damaged or missing is no functions at all and no initialisation of the reel motor when inserting a tape. The third one is located on the right hand side next to the right spool and this detects whether the record prevention tab is present or not.The only problem you would have if this one was missing or damaged would be no RECORDING.If all the idlers belts and the pulleys are cleaned and new then you can illiminate these items. It could be the reel motor getting tired. It could be the small red LED sensor under the right spool having dust over it and not detecting pulses, very rarely is this part defective.I hope this helps and feel free to e-mail anytime............Kevin (UK)

Well after replacing the belts, idler and pinch roller, I have found another problem with my Sanyo 4400. The "leaf switch" is broken. Actually the plastic piece that attaches to one of the metal feelers has broken off. And of course the part is not available from Sanyo per Studio Sound Electronics. Their suggestion is to obtain a similar model for parts and hope the leaf switch is working or hot glue the part back on (but that would be a quick fix that probably would not last long. The Company has been excellent in helping me, if you don't mind the plug.

To refresh you all with my problem at this point, is that the unit now rewinds and fast forwards ok and loads a tape for play but shuts off after about 10-20 seconds. The tape does not advance thru the machine during the play function.

Does anyone know what the "leaf switch" is used for? Would this be the possible solution to my unit not playing?

Thanks again for everyones help.

I am willing to trade other shows I have for the beta tapes or for copies of the content on them. I am also interested in purchaseing the beta tapes if need be. If anybody can help, please email me. Thank you.

Dewars,

About the O-rings... If you already went ahead and ordered a new idler assembly, that should already include 2 new rubber tires of the correct size. The O-ring fix is only to replace dried out rubber around the original idler assembly and sometimes that fix is marginal at best. Don't replace any new rubber with O-rings. You're in good shape at least with the idler wheels if you have a new idler assembly.

Sorry I meant to thank you as well for your insights and knowledge. I am still going to pick up a repair book and look through it. It may not help but it is worth a shot. I have checked the boards and spent a long time cleaning the dust off the boards very carefully with long tipped-dual cleaning sticks. I could not see anything that might have leaked onto the boards or any obvious burn marks. I know that doesn't mean that something still might be wrong with them. I did the cleaning because I know that accumulations of dust have been known to act as conductors for electricity. (Gulp - I hope that is not a "wife's tale"?) Anyway, that is where I am. Wish me luck and thanks again.

My answers are based on someone that opened the cover to his beta less than 4 weeks ago. As far as I can tell by watching the tape go thru the machine, the pinch roller pinches the tape against the capstan during play. It appears the capstan is spinning during play. I installed the pinch roller that was sent to me from the place that I ordered it from. So if it is the wrong part, I really would not know. It appeared to be a match to the old one, so I assumed it was OK. I made the assumption that the capstan was OK because I could confirm that it was spinning during operation. If however that is in correct than I have made an error. I have very little knowledge about repairing vcr's but with the help of this site and its self-help site, I thought I would give it a go and try to fix the machine. Again thanks to all for your ideas and help. I will post again when I have figured this out or give up and look for another beta machine.

Hallo Roderick,Thanks for the tip. As soon as I pick my machine up from the extortion merchant with whom I left it I'll give it a try. I wonder how he could quote me for a "new DC 2 DC" when there are none available.?Thanks again, Regards, Len.

Dewars,

I have not been on chat page for a while but I noticed your plight with a sick Sony SLC9 and the excessive quote for fixing same. If they indicated that the DC/DC needed fixing when the display actually works then they are dodgy. Forget the quick self help VCR course. These machines are about as complex as it gets (minus HiFi) and you need a service manual, CRO and other test equipment plus a good grounding in electronics to fully service them. The reel motors unlike most other VCRs are servo controlled. The SS-11 board at the bottom of the VCR controls many operations including the trick play modes. These can be affected over time by capacitors leaking corrosive fluid onto the copper tracks.

Some typical problems in the SLC9 are.

1/ Reel motor control transistors short out and burn the reel board. This usually happens along with major faults on the SS-11 board. (find a good service agent or swap boards from a spares machine)

2/ A mechanical problem causing the reel brakes to bind or not release. (not common)

3/ Faults on the SS-11 board or in the power supply causing insufficient power to be applied to drive the reel motor correctly.

4/ Binding of the tape to the upper drum by friction. Caused by excessive wear of the upper drum.

You have not actually detailed the fault symptoms except for mentioning rewind. Is the machine is OK in normal play mode?

regards Noel

I Made a Music Video for the Rave Band Altern 8 on A BETA MOVIE Camera in 1993, whilst everyone else was shooting with beta sp (I WAS A POOR FIRST TIME DIRECTOR) I was pulling a fast one on the BBC by first shooting the video on the classic beta movie camera then editing it using a HFC 900e editing deck in my bed room (great piece of kit) then just to keep the authorities at the BBC happy so it could be played on Top Of The Pops I got my betamax edit transferred on to 1" .at birminghams second city post ... .. THEN : THERE IT WAS PLAYED ON TOP OF THE POPS ON BBC1 WOW ..!!!! .... GREAT FUN! Thought I'd share that with you...betamax freaks.... cool long live betamax , I had a slf1 brick and Sony 9000 that was my first camera.

Does the pinch roller make contact with the capstan when trying to play ? Is it spinning at all ? Didn't you check that the pinch roller you replaced was the one for your model ? What do you consider an "ok" capstan ?

OOps I also meant to say that the "O-rings" would be used just to see if that fixes the problem. Then I will order the pinch roller. Thanks

Joplinbeta:

Thanks for the help. Actually I did just that and they seem to be a good source for beta vcr parts in the USA. I replaced the belts, idler arm and pinch roller. Although it stopped the machine from jamming, I still have the problem that I listed. Unless the pinch roller was the wrong size. I will try a couple of "o rings" to see if that improves. I can pick up at a local hardware store. Worth a try.

Thanks.

Dewars,

I've had several Sanyo Betas show the same symptoms (FF and REW work, but shuts down in PLAY). Seemed like the capstan was moving the tape just fine through the mechanism, but the tape reels were slipping and not wanting to pick up the slack. I experimented with one by replacing the idler tire rubber with O-rings and that got it playing halfway decent. What I'd do is buy the "major" tuneup kit for the Sanyo 4400 from Studio Sound, item # VMK-1022J, for $10.95 + ship and install it. Pretty easy to do and should work better than just O-rings.

Carl & Roderick:

Thanks for the comments and help. I am not sure if the original DC-2-DC convertor is the problem. It provides the power for the florescent display and also the tuner. I don't have a problem with the florescent display and really don't care about the tuner since all I want to do is for the machine to play so I can transfer my home videos to a computer. The job seems a little too difficult for me because my knowledge of electronics is very limited. What I have done so far - change the belts, idler and pinch roller - was pretty easy especially with the help of this forum and corresponding site. I am going to the library today or tomorrow and see if I can pick up a self help book on vcr repair and give it a go from there. Of course if I screw up on my repair job, I am no better off or worse off (except for the cost of the parts which was pretty inexpensive) then I was when I first started. I will definitely post back as to my outcome. Regardless, thanks to all for your help.

Roderick, did you have the same problem with your machine that I am having now? According to the link you gave it seemed that the DC-2-DC converter is not the problem, unless it has more functions then was listed.

Hi Len

The C9 DC-DC converter is a regular problem.Have a look here and follow the different links to get a full break-down how to fix it.Replacements are no longer available. I recently fixed one by replacing all the caps and it works like a charm. It is not an easy job though.

Olive or any member:

It appears the capstan is ok. So it must be something do with back tension? I assume that it has something to do with the tension on the tape. It appears there is no back tension since the tape is very loose in the play mode and doesn't appear to be pulled along? If that is it, then what would I check to see what is not operating properly?

Thanks again.

Olive:

Thanks, I didn't think about the capstan. That sounds logically and will check that out and see if that is the problem. Appreciate the advice.

Sounds like either the capstan is not working or there's too much back tension.

Hi all. Great site. Anyway, my question is as follows: I have a Sanyo VCR4400, United States(non-PAL) manufactured beta VCR. I have replaced the belts, idler, cleaned the pinch roller & cleaned the dust off of the inside parts and boards on the machine. The vcr now will rewind and FF with no problems. However, when I hit play, it starts to play for a few seconds (2-3 seconds) and than stops. I notice that the actual tape does not move other than being pulled to "play operation." When I hit the stop button, after the machine has ceased operation/play, it spins back into the cassette and will eject properly. It does not jam in the machine. Is there any other suggestions that I might try before I give up and toss out. Ha Ha i really need to get the machine to play. I have about 30 beta tapes of my children growing up and would like to transfer to my PC and burn onto dvds. Thanks so much.

I am a newcomer to this site and hope that I am not asking a stupid question. I have a Sony SL-C9 for which I have had a ridiculous quote (£646) for repair, less £100 for an "inspection fee".Can anyone tell me if thete is a Service Sheet available so that I can "have a go" myself?.Thanks in advance for any help.

Carl, my advice on doing a proper alignment is the following: use the right tools !

Get the service manual (or adjustment manual, some models have this as a separate manual), it explains the procedures. You'll also need an oscilloscope and an alignment tape (you may use another tape but you have to be sure it has been recorded on a well aligned unit).
