Will some one please explain how to convert an HF950 to produce a Y/C output as bart needs to do his homework.
I am looking for someone that can convert early 1980's football tapes from Beta to VHS-I have no idea how this works and have no equipment to do so--Do I have any takers on this project? I am dumb-founded to preform the task--If so, Please so contact me at the E mail above and cost of recording each tape. Regard to the professionals!
Homer quit fooling around with that newfangled "Betamax" and help me with my kinescope machine! I have an important message for the Kaiser that might help him sink the Lusitania win the Great War.... er You didn't hear that. You know nothing! You see nothing!
FOR SALE: Sony Betamax Model #SL-2401 Video Cassette Recorder, Serial #802009 with clock, set s for program to record date, month and time, 35.9 WATT, has an rf unit, vhf 3 channel, 4 channel, has video out and audio out. It has a PCM switch. Average conditon, clean. I have 29 different tapes for sale. Make reasonable offer.
I have been given some BETACAM tapes and wondered if I can use them on my Betamax machines. They are BCT-20K on a blue and grey label with a green stipe. They are 150 meters long.
In regards to the 6pin AV socket, the pinout is on palsite, plus I put it on my own little cable making page, under "6 pin AV cable for sony beta's"
http://users.bigpond.com/jsparkin/
I hope this is of some help
B2
They perfect for your Betamax machine as they are of industrial quality and should run better than consumer grade tapes. BCT-20s = an L-500 tape which translates to 1 hour BI speed (NTSC only) 2 hourrs BII and the PAL/SECAM standard speed or 3 hours BIII speed (NTSC only). This applies to Betacam oxide tapes as the Metal Betacam SP tapes will not work because they put the record tab in a different place and leave an empty hole where a standard Beta tab should be and being metal tapes, tend to wear down video heads a little more than oxide tapes.
SLHF-1000Mint condition both mechanically and physically. Cosmetically a 10 out of 10.Original box, manual, but NO REMOTE. Make a fair offer and it's yours... Buyer pays shipping...

Serious inquiries only, please.
I just bought a Zenith VR9800 Beta I, II player recorder w/timer companion unit. I originally bought it extremely cheap hoping to use the tuner part for broadcast reception on a large monitor but after inspecting it, I realize this thing is practically brand new and both units work perfectly. I would like to try the recording capability of the 9800 unit but I don't have any Beta tapes and don't even know what kind to get? I noticed the NiCad battery charges perfectly and runs the unit very well. Any hints on what all this thing can do and where to get the best tapes for it? Any help appreciated thanks.
ciao, come stai?
From the obitrary for Akio Morita. UK Daily Newspaper "TheDaily Telegraph" 4.10.99. http://www.telegraph.co.uk
"Probably Sony's only real failure [in developing newproducts] was thedevelopment of the Betamax video recording system. Theirdecision that thetape cassette should be no larger than an airport paperbackmeant, crucially, that in the early competition against the rival VHSsystem, aBetamax tape was too short to record an entire Americanbaseball game. VHSconsequently became the standard format."
Hi everybody. I always knew I was using something special. I just came acrossthis site and I am pleased to hear from other people that love thosegreat machines. Before I found this site I never knew why I liked Betamax and my friends where always mad at me when I recorded somethingon TV they've missed on Betamax, because they could not watch it withtheir VHS VCR. I have these three Betamax VCRs my father once boughtand some 500 tapes. My first VHS VCR I bought about two months agoto be able to rent movies. But I was always wondering why my recordings look like crap. Minedon't look superior to the VHS recordings. Not even with my SL-HF950 and a Pro-X tape. I have tried every recorder. Might it be the age ofmy tape material. None of my tapes is younger than 8 years. By the way, what is a normal price for a new ProX tape? Now I was also wondering, what the difference between Super Beta, Betaand these other formats is. Also what is the difference between the SL-C9 and the SL-C9E I own and the difference between the SL-HF100 andthe SL-HF100ES I own.
Many thanks in advance
MAX
I have a VC-N70EU VCR that I use very little. I want to know if I can use this VCR to back up my computer files. If it can be done, would someone send me the information or a place to get it, so I could accomplish this task. Thanks Tom
I have two mint condition Sony Trinicron HVC-2200's with accompanying Betamax deck and console. I don't know the model of the two-piece main component. I'm not sure what the going rate is for items like this so, i will take the best offer. Please contact me at [email protected]/ i live in NYC and must get rid of these items within the next week and a half. thankssam
In reply to Max,sorry but AFAIK Pro-X tapes are no longer available in Europe. The SL-C9E is the European version of the SL-C9. TheSC -C9UB being the UK one. The differences are primarily in the tuner modulator sections. The European modelcomes with a VHF/UHF tuner and is PAL I/B compatible whereas the UK version is band IV/V, PAL I. The SL-C9E also has the ability to store 30 preset station and you'll notice that the familar 11 and 12 tuner buttons on the front of the UK machine are replaced with 1+ and 2+ on the E version.
What is everyone's favourite Betamax feature?

From the Telegraph's 'News in Brief' section: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/
Sony founder dies aged 78
AKIO MORITA, the co-founder of the Japanese electronics giant Sony, died in hospital yesterday (3rd Oct 99) ofpneumonia. He was 78.
Mr Morita established Tokyo Telecommunications Engineering Corp in 1946, changing its name to Sony. It soonbecame a leading name in electronics, producing the world's smallest transistor radios and the Walkman. Hebecame chairman of the company in 1976 and pushed through Sony's buy-out of American entertainmentcompanies CBS and Columbia Pictures.
Anyone interested in my Sanyo Betacord vcr? Good working order and 11 tapes. Model no VTC 5150 (UK model)
Free to a good home! (you pay carriage)
What about the obituary?
for sale Sony C-5 betamax recorder. Rewind needs looking at.P{lease make offer to buy
Today I was given a broken SL-HF900. Once you press play or record, tape transport will not move (no capstan rotation), but the drum will spin much faster than the usual...
After some investigation, I found that some liquid must have spilled inside the unit. There is a very corroded SS-53 board inside. I plan to give a try cleaning it, but I'm afraid the board is a waste.
So I was wondering if anyone has a parts deck with at least a good SS-53 board so I can replace it. I guess buying a new one, if still available, from Sony would cost an awful lot of money !
vhs looking better than Beta - even a 950. ??
1 it could be worn tapes, try a new tape or wind svhs tape into an old shell
2 worn heads or un run in new heads (My VTC M40 took 2 months to run in after new heads)
3 better tuner getting a stronger signal, some Beta deck tuners arte very fussy - 950 is good though
4 Most likely it is because the sharpness is turned down so images are less peaky and less grain is shown.
5 Finally look at position in aerial chain.
Try the first one, and then look carefully at the detail.
PS my 950 still knocks spots off svhs, I have got a very good copy of Starship Troopers, copied off a rental DVD.
I have a bunch of Sony SL-HF 860D Super hifi decks for sale. Anyone interested, please email me. I can ship pretty much anywhere, and have pics for you if interested.
nunnya@bidness
Okay, I saw you guys were looking for a way to get Y/C(S-video) output from a 950, now from what I viewed on this page: http://users.bigpond.com/jsparkin/cable.htm it makes me wonder what the top two are for, but unfortunately I do not have anything I can test this on, but its worth a shot for one of you to try connecting the top left to pin 4 and the other to pin 3 (for pin-outs see http://www.fbe.fh-frankfurt.de/mitarb/schellha/ic/hwb/co_SVideo.html), and the ground as marked on the page refferred to first, to pins 1 & 2. if that doesn't work maybe try swapping pins 3 & 4? Again, I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT THE TWO TOP CONNECTORS ARE, THIS IS JUST A GUESS!
Good Luck,elph
Does anyone have any idea about how much the Beetamx C7 generally changes hands for? Many thnaks.
I have a Sony U-Matic. VO-1600 Serial # 14671. This is one of 5 original machines purchased by KTLA in Los Angeles .This is a top loader. And seems to work fine. I have the cover and head cleaner cartridge, and about 20 recorded tapes. Would like to sell. Make offer.
Looking for a broken sl-hf2100 for parts and reverse engineering. This will solve the s video issue once and for all. Also is their anyone out there who has schematics for the 2100 that they'd be willing to part with or at least make copies of? Thanks. Will
glenn@ggooderham
Sony SL-C9 The plastic gear on the cassette carriage often breaks. This usually leaves the tape trapped in the machine and if tape eject is attempted it can result in more broken parts ( such as the inner and outer cassette flaps ). Sony supply a 'carriage modification kit' which contains an improved set of gears and unlike the original are made of metal as opposed to plastic.
Has anybody got one of these?
I believe that the macro vision gets passed down the chain from VHS to Beta but does not affect the beta copy although it can still infect any future VHS ones. Sort of like being immune to a disease but being able to infect someone else with it.
Are head cleaning tapes for Beta vcr's still available anywhere? Need one.Georgetown, Massachussetts, USA
SONY HVC-2400 Camera.I've just inherited this camera and would liketo sell it,in new condition with case,I can desc.as Sony TrinitronHvc-2400 with SONOPTOR 1:1.4 f=11-70mm 58.
Yes they are! RCA still has one availabe. Sony Professional should have one as well since most Broadcasters Use Betacam equipment.Absolute Beta at http://www.videos.net/betamax/ sell all sorts of Beta equipment and accessories (hint don't buy the Mustang brand rewinder as they may damage your tapes) including beta head cleaner. Of course if you have a dead beta tape you can unspool the tape and respool head cleaning tape from a VHS machine. You could also just open up your machine and clean the heads with alcohol and a cotton swab if you're in a hurry to watch something.
I have aquired a Betamax SL-C5 and would like to make it function once more! Where do I obtain spares, for instance a rewind kit Sony Part No. A 670634A.Thanks in anticipation, Trevor.
I HAVE A SLC9 BETA VIDEO SONY, I AM AFTER THE CASSTETTE HOUSE UNIT FOR IT AS THE SMALLKOGS WHICH ARE NYLON HAVE BROKEN CAN YOU HELPMANY THANKS
I am looking to buy A PAL Standard Betamax player in good condition, also a PAL U-MaticThank youRob
Can someone give me a number or website for someone who sells betamax machines for the home user. Can you still get new ones or are they all used?
My Sony SL-HFT7 is acting up for the first time in the one year that I've owned it. I think it is because I used a bad tape to record a TV show. Now all I'm getting is snow in the picture. I cleaned the heads with a cassette head cleaner, but still the same problem. I've played various tapes for the last couple of hours in hopes that something would show up, but no luck. My last resort was to post a message here, so please help if you know what the problem might be. Thank you
I have a working beta Hi-fi/super beta and was wondering if there isany way to record from the beta machine to a vhsif there is a posible way please contact me at [email protected] info would be greatly appreciatedand if you have no idea but have an idea where to look contact me as wellthank you
I would just like some input into my decision to buy a camcorder on ebay. I recently purchased a "refurbished" jvc camcorder (vhs-c) model # GR-AXM310U for roughly 300 dollars. It has a 90 day warranty and all that b.s. Does refurbished necessarily mean that it is used or that it could have been a store model and then sent out to me? Also did i get the "shaft" by paying this price for it? The camera did retail for 700 dollars last season..... any comments?
I have heard NEW Beta machines are available. Can anyone tell me where? Thanks
Elph, can I join Bart in thanking you for at least trying to help. Staying with the idea, I'm going to try finding out if any of the other SCART pins on the 950 do anything. They are after all in the majority after just 2 audio and 1 video (plus earth) actually being used.
Does anyone have a manual for a SONY SL-HF1000 Superbeta HI-FI VCR that they'd be willing to make a copy of for a reasonable fee? Also, how about a remote control that works with this model?
Joe Alesi, I can't help you with a manual but as for the remote try finding a Sony RMT-V373A. I am using such a remote for my SL-HF 750. It has a Jog/Shuttle wheel and most of the other functions work for my HF750, which means they would work on your HF1000, too. Try Ebay or some other Auction site, or if your crazy or desperate Sony might have that remote but for a lot of money. Good Luck. Pepse.
One only, brand new sealed Pro-X L500 top grade Beta tape for sale in UK.Ideal for SuperBeta / BetaHifi. £10 + post. Almost certainly the lastnew Pro-X tape in the country (world?). In sealed Betacam style box, stunninglooks as well as performance.
Bill, no Y/C output on 950 scart socket, I already tried it on my sony tv (y/c input) and black and white picture only.
Hey Joe, Absolute Beta at -> http://www.videos.net/betamax/ <- Keeps a library of manuals that for 10 bucks will make a copy.Unfortunatly his photo copier is a little astigmatic at this point. As for remote any universal remote can be used for mos of the basic functions. Radio Shack sells the better kind, by the way. Sony may still have a compatable remote or at least a remote that can be made compatable since Sony had three "VTR" settings that it uses for it's remote systems; VTR 1 for Beta,VTR 2 for 8mm, and VTR 3 for VHS. Some of Sonys VCRs allowed you to change the setting around so that you could control two separate devices without interference. Look for (or ask Sony for) a remote (esp a remote with jog/shuttle features) that can change VTR settings.
Hi folks, I just bought a betamax and am brand new to these machines...I am looking for 2 things, if anyone can help...I would like to find a cleaner for the machine, and also if anyone has any old tapes with pre 1990 sports on them, I would like to buy them. only original recordings, not copies....thanks...please e-mail direct
There are no new PAL Beta machines available. NTSC machines are available in Japan and are allegedly available in the United States. I use the term allegedly since one model is on the Sony price list- teh SL HF 2000 for $ 800. It is not really worth that much since VHS machines with comparable features can now be had for under $ 200. I set out to find one a couple of months ago when one of my 900's went into the hsop and can't come out since the parts needed to fix it are not available from Sony. I tried sevreal places that have had them on display in the past and was told that there is a waiting list to get them, from 3 to 8 months depending on the place and they would need at least 50% deposit to order one. Anthor great Sony marketing plan, since I suspect these VCRs were made a couple years ago and stockpiled it is not as if they are waiting to come off the assembly line.
To Martin Imber...
Please tell us more about "running-in new heads". I've never heard of such a phenomenon. I've replaced heads in quite a few betas (and VHS) and never needed to run them in.
To Dylan Lewis...
Beta VCRs does not defeat macrovision. It simply ignores it. So it still record the scrambled signal, but since it does not rely on this scrambled part of the signal to show off a picture, you will see a neat image. Then, when copying back on VHS, you will record the scrambled signal again. I suggest you get a device called a "video stabilizer" to perform fine copies.
To kelly...
Just get a set of RCA-cables to hook-up your beta to your VHS. Connect beta's audio/video outputs to the VHS audio/video inputs.
To Alan Morton...
I wonder what sort of marketing plan consists in letting a customer invest money then wait for a long time for his product. In the marketing point-of-view, what is the purpose of doing so ?? My idea is that Sony actually have few of these left and has a hard time finding which one of their numerous plants still have some.
Charles- the point that I was trying to make is that Sony's marketing plans leave something to be desired. Every company has some really good people and some mediocre people working for them. Sony happens to put all their good ones in engineering and all their mediocre ones in marketing. Why else would they have introduced an innovative product (the Betamax) have it become a sucess byond their wildest dreams, at one point having 100% share of the market then allow a poorer, but better promoted competing product (VHS) all but put the Betamax out of business. My point was that Sony's marketing people are not too bright. If they werer they would have the SL HF 2000s available for anyone wanting to buy one as soon as possible.

My brother the worlds greatest Beta enthusiast was just informed that there is a new king in the world of video.DIGITAL VHS HDTV RECORD AND PLAYBACK AT 1080 LINES OF RESOLUTION IN 5.1 DOLBY DIGITAL SOUND! For $1000.00 or less!It was sad, there he was huddled up in the corner with his 4 Beta machines and few thousand tapes whimpering and babling some alien language to himself!I couldn't stand to watch!
Whenever a Sanyo deck has had new heads they seem to take about a month before the picture settles down, until then it's cross hatchy and noisy - happened on both Sanyos I've got
The reason ,Sanyo called their Beta vcr's Betacord ,is to do with the fact that their machines un-loaded the tape (VHS STYLE!) DURING FF & REW (causing LESS head to tape wear),thus the system was slightly different to Sony's Betamax.Hope this helps?
Thanks, Bart. So it's back to the drawing board. Anybody out there have an idea? Just to recap, we want to get separate Y/C out of a Sony SLHF950.
i have aquired a hvc-2000p camera, seems fine accept that in viewfinder and on monitor screen smearing of iregular definition across part of image as if contamination on videcon tube surface but canot see an east way to get to it,lens seems perfect and if a black.white image is panned across the field the image appears ok behind the smearingdoes anyone have any ideasmany thanks chris
I want Y/C on my 950 as well!
RE SANYO Beta's and "new head run in times"
hmmmmmmmm I have replaced M40 's and an M20.....never heard of "Run in"...on any machine for that matter...beta or any other format?
I have a Sony C9 & am getting short on parts.I live in Adelaide Australia.
Can anyone help with info from down under?
Larry
hello fellow betamax lovers. i just got a sony sl-2300 betamax machine. it works ok, but the video occasionally has lines going through it and the audio is garbled when background music is playing. i would very much like to fix up and use it because i also got over 30 movies on beta to play. if anyone knows anything about the sl-2300 please let me know. is this unit worth fixing up? thanks for all responses.
brian
I just aquired a SONY HVP-2200 video camera. I'm waiting on an SL-2000 unit I'd just ordered but in the meantime does anybody have an AC/RCA-out adapter for this thing? I'd like to be able to hook it up to my computer or my other Beta VCR which has RCA inputs but doesn't have a camera input jack.By the way I just found an old GE VCR that someone had thrown away because the idler tires had worn out. The neat thing about this mid-80's vintage unit is the fact that not only did it use a WIRED remote but IT STILL HAD THE WIRED REMOTE! Not only that but IT STILL HAD THE ORIGIONAL MANUAL! You almost never find them. I know GE only made VHS machine but it's still an interesting find, though given that GE has(or had) a major presence here in Schenectady employing at one time nearly a third of the population, it should be no surpride the number of GE VCRs that turn up on the trash heap after so many years of service.
I have an old SONY SL-C6 Betamax deck for sale.
There are minor mechanical (rewind & lace-up) problems & picture is not very special. However, the overall condition is accectable.
Is there any interest in this item?
I understand that there is a converter that one can use in a VHS tape player. This converter will play Beta tapes on a VHS. Anyone know about this where I could get one and [email protected]

hi im looking for info. my dad has at least 2500 beta movies and 100's of blank tape he has 9 super beta machines and not all work that well he needs to find a new machine or an adaptor to go from beta to vhs all the owners of beta's should make sony make new units for all who have movies if my dad cant find some or someone to fix most of his machines he might just sell all the movies he has all kinds rare and adult to western's from the 1920 to 1999 if any wants info email me ok .
Head Run In - Why does it take a month after head replacement to settle down?
Also DON'T copy to vhs as vhs is now on it's last legs, it is obsolete, it makes as much sense as copying to V2000.
If you copy use DV, or wait until recordable DVD arrives, digital technology is the future, vhs is obsolete.
You will need your Beta decks for at least another 2 years then we should be able to abandon tape. Beta will last to the end.
The first Sanyo format was called Videocord
I have a Sony SL-2500 betamax that has a problem, When I insert theTape press play, Rew, or FF, It does it for 1 second and it stops, SoI took the cover off and I found out the head is not spinning, I tryto spin the head, But I can feel the magnets forceing the head from spinning, But when it is stopped the head spins free when I spin itwith my fingers, Can anybody out there help me out, Let me know whatthe problem is, And if it is serious.
Thankyou, Keep those Betamaxes working out there, They will out lastany thing
VHS obsolete? hmmm seems JVC came up with this great idea for DVHS to play standard VHS tapes so everyone would be able to use there old gear....VHS is alive and kicking....you cant deny that...or else beta would be dominant? or is my logic flawed?
if you must tell us all to go for digital, why not attempt a meagre vote to sony to develop a Dbeta? like D8? they allready have had digital betacam variants out for quite a few years now. A nice 5 or 6 hundred line 4 track hifi beta would do me just fine about now...

ThanksMatt Eckman
Hia all wanna chat
S VIDEO OUTPUT SOLVED!http://www.hometech.com/video/svconv.html at least for ntsc anyway. If there's one for ntsc then there's got to be one for pal.
I have several hundred Beta format movies, many of which have never been rented, reasonably priced, $3.00 each/ 20 for $50.00 50 for a $100.00 or 100 + for $1.75 each. Maybe you could pass the word onto other betaphiles, or maybe know where I could sell them, I'm into DVD now. Interested parties may contact me for a complete list at [email protected], I live in Atmore, Alabama, not too far from Mobile, on the Gulf Coast! Have a great day and thanks!!!
I'm looking to buy the video casette "BETAMAX" PAL system in bulk.Quantity needs : at least 5000 pcs.Serious supplier/manufacturer only, please !For Indonesia's market. My fax # (62-21) 5538880Thank's
Hi, normally i repair tvs & vcrs etc, but have little personal interest in either format,Beta or VHS., occasionally i come across a betamax machine, recently i acquired a betamax top loading vcr the badge name is "WEGA" with West Germany on the back label, it has a voltage selector sw, is in pristine condition with IR R/CTL, it came to me in it's original box & packing complete with user manual, guarantee card,& unused instruction stickers, and thought that some Betamax enthusiasts may be interested in this machine if so please E-Mail me. also anyone interested in a service manual for the Sanyo 5000 vcr, and the user manual, also a SONY IR. R/CTL RMT-216 ( SLHF100UB ). I never realised there was still such a big interest in the Betamax vcrs, and any further machines or spares that come my way, i may visit the chat page again. Kind Regards Tom.
DVHS will probably fail, its Data not Digital, vhs _IS_ on its last legs, the chance of Digital Beta is nill, in 5 years time somebody may be lamenting the end of vhs. Beta was a better format but Sony have decided to let it die.
Hard Disk recorders and Optical Discs will kill off tape for home use, MDV will end up being the video camera format. DV will be the last home format to go.
Why transfer better quality footage to a format on its last legs? At least DV will allow copying on to a computer.
I want a full size DV deck but can't afford one!
out of curiosity, if one was to offer a " C9 DCDC converter refurbishing" service, would there be enough demand for it to be worth the while?
Wanted : Sanyo VTC-M20 's.....doesnt matter if heads are worn or clock display is dead...
hmmmm as for DVHS...head wear in time..."yes martin whatever you say" ;)but I cant swallow the bit about sony no longer having anything to do with beta...the proffesional versions must be the most popular industrial format on the planet?
peace.
John
I stumbled into this page and it is good. I need help getting a multisystem vcr with PAL< SECAM, NTSC, MESECAM, PAL-M, PAL-N, basically the international format. Can anyone direct me to anywhere on the web that will be helpful? I'll really appreciate it.Thanks a lot folks.

Hello Fellow betapeople
I don't know if any one is out there, but I just want to find a decent machine so I can watch my classic flicks
Hi all,
Any one has any technical information for the cassette changer AG-300?It's loading single cassettes, but not from the stack (timing problem?)...Appreciate any input or help!
I am looking for a good Beta repair shop on the West Coast to repaira Sony, Sanyo and Toshiba Beta machines. If anyone knows of a good and reliable shop or person to work onmy machines I would appreciate your recommendations.Thank you
Sony dropped domestic Beta as they unfortunately lost the format war, remember Philips gave in a LOT sooner with V2000 - another better than vhs format.
Betacam is now a completely different format to domestic Beta, but whenever I use a vhs deck, well it feels crude and feels like an older less developed format than Beta.
There is a lot going against vhs at present, all the home cinema people went LD and then DVD, the film makers have gone DV, there is only the mass of record of TV people. They will panic and drop as soon as something else looks like it will takeover, look at all the Beta droppers in the mid 80's. Try buying a vhs video camera! In US DVD is killing the vhs prerecorded tape market, in Britain a lot of films are becoming "not available on vhs" - eg Armageddon & Matrix.
I think that a reconditioned Beta deck will see out analogue tape, ie my VTCM40 and SLHF950 will see me past vhs to the world of Digital Video.
Sony would not be able to market any domestic Beta based products due to _some_ w****rs thinking it's obsolete (not realising it was a better format) however a small run of PAL Beta decks would not go amissed (ok I'd buy a new Beta deck - but not any vhs derivitive)
However the prototype DV deck used ED-Beta mechanicals, so even JVC saw it.
The tape speed of PAL DV is within 0.5% of PAL Beta - coincidence?
My latest UK Beta spec.

BEtA STACK!!
well...what can I say but WOW...the wierd gizmo collectors dream...I had one of these fine units atop a second unit back in the 80's, when, I only used the beta stack ONCE, I went on holidays, and didnt want to miss bugs bunny at 4pm every day, and flying high the movie (what a cheesy oldie), so I put 3 750's in and away it went...I have to admit its a miracle the thing ever worked, it pushed the decks buttons physically, had many moving clicking whiring parts, and was a nightmare to look at.
Martin, RE VHS...well there are some fine VHS machines out there, my sony vhs's have given me years of proffessional service, and my JVC BR-s600 and GRS-707 gave me 6 years of quality faithful use till I traded upto miniDV. Unfortunately you cant stick to beta and be left behind by not being compatible, but that doesnt mean you cant stick to beta as your main prefered format, mine personally is low band Umatic, since my bvw-75p beta deck had to go back to the edit house in 95. In my view, VHS is like the floppy disk, sure I have CDRW, ZIP, LS120 and DDS2 tape, but everyone's still got a slow small capacity 1.44 floppy in their computer...even the latest greatest servers...it will be around for a few years yet. But who really cares. You never know, I know the guys in my local sony office would welcome a new beta unit even if only in a limited number. They did hint at me 18 months ago of a possible superbeta mono deck multisystem, along the lines of a sl-200. As per usual...no need to get my hopes up.
Hope this is of some help

To DP:
If you still have any more of the HF-860D Beta decks, I'd be interested in one as long as it works. Do any have their remotes or manuals (preferred, but not required)? Please email me (above) w/ price, pix & info. I tried to send you an email but I keep getting my message returned -- something about a "local (your end) config error."
