Hi can anyone help me.Ive got a SANYO VTC 5000 BETAMAX VIDEO RECORDERwith over 130 tapes in good working order to sell.I live in the UK but im not sure where to sell it.does anyone know of any dealers who might be interested or anywhere that deals with beta private ads.The reason im not sure is because it belonged to someone in my family and im not really up on betamax.
GarethAm i right in understanding the Sanyo VCR connections are causing you the headache......?All you need is a twin phono cable, a BNC socket(for the video connection on the vcr) and then either a scart (switchable in/out) or two more phono connections ( depending on what your DVD recorder has). These cables and the BNC sockets can be had very cheaply from mail order electronic/accessory supplier catalogues such as CPC e.t.cBy the way the Sanyo 5150 is an excellent choice for the task at hand.........very good in all respects.Hope this helps................Kevin
I recently purchased a Sanyo VTC5150 - as that was the model I had growing up- with the intention of copying old beta tapes to DVD. However, I'm stuck with the audio/video outputs on the vcr- can't find cables compatible with the modern av inputs on a dvd recorder.
Can anyone help, point me in the right direction or suggest a beta model that does have compatible audio/video outputs?
Thanks all.
The Beta Informer is back. I have finally found a way around my ISP, so I can begin mailing again. Once I sort through all the returned mail, and I have alot of it since I stopped publication 2.5 years ago, I will send out the first issue. If you would like to be a subscriber again, please drop me a line. It's good to be back!!

I'm amazed at the set of features of that VHS Beta Max SL-5400. Not only does it have a clock set button, it sports a power switch as well. Wow !
Thanks for the info

Dave. Yeah the SLO-323 is a BI speed only recorder/player. The upgrade model SLO-325 is a BI recorder that plays all three speeds.
Hi I think this machine (SLO-323) is one speed but does it play other speeds such as B2 or B3, Does anyone know? Thanks
Well spotted!

Happy New Year to Betamax PALS. I own a SL HF 100 Pal VCR. Need Sevice Manual to fix Hi-Fi audio problem. Any assistance in sourcing the Manual, even in PDF Format, is apreciated.
Your always learning when you repair SONY SLC9s.
I have had two faults on the same mint condition machine this week - both involving the load mechanism. This particular machine has replacement metal gears.
The first problem was that it decided not to accept tape. Turns out the belt that drives the "load ring assembly" was a bit stretched and perished and the drive gear polished by wear. I just scuffed the V in the drive pulley and it worked again. ( I didn't have a spare belt but hat would be the best cure.) The machine does a little shuffle on the load ring at turn on to confirm the mechanisms position.
Second problem looked like a faulty cover slide door. ( the one at the front. that closes over the cassette hole when a tape is inside.)
The tape caught the door on eject and made the mechanism pop out of alignment. ( The plastic drive arm jumps off the pin lifting the tape assembly toward the centre of the machine. )
The culprit was a broken rubber on one of the levers pressing against the top of the cassette and holding it in place during load and unload.(one each side) This fault allows the cassette, under spring tension, to hit the cover door and jam it.
The machines are getting to an age where the rubber parts are getting hard and breaking so I guess that means more faults to look for.
Hope this helps someone else. The info might find its way onto Palsite C9 info eventually.
regards Noel
Jeff,
Thanks for your kind offer, I have emailed direct.
Glen, I checked and I have a 611 remote and a 615. Neither appear to have VCR functions. The 612A looks interesting.

It sound like your tapes are suffering of 'sticky tape'. It does happen with older tapes and the motors in a VCR aren't strong enough to break the sticky point. Try this: play the tape untill it stops - eject the tape and turn the tape upside down with the lid facing away from you - on the top right hand side you'll notice a little slot with a lever - use a pen or similar to push the lever towards you, this should enable you to open the lid - this also releases the 'brake' on the reels - keep the lid opened and gently, but with a little force, move the reels - it will probably move easy one way but not the other - apply gentle force to break the 'stuck tape' and wind it a little - put back in VCR and see how you go. Should work, best of luck!
Hello I am very sorry to have to say goodbye to a trusted friend, My SL-HFR70 has gone to Betamax heaven, If you have read my other posts it went slowly and peacefully in the night, It would not power up or anything so it is now just avaiable for partsI still have the HIiFi prosseser which still works and now I am off to Ebay to find anotherMay I have a moment of silence..................Thank you

You said you hooked the RCA A/V cables but did you set the TV to receive signal from these inputs instead of tuner channel 3 ?
Also, have you tested the VCR on another TV ?
Your problem is likely a bad RF unit in the VCR, or the TV tuner has to be fine-tuned. These should be bypassed by using properly hooked - and selected - A/V signals.
I took a look at your photo and it looks like mine is hooked up the same way. I have the betamax set to channel 3 and my tv on 3. I get a really good black and white picture, but no sound. I also hooked up the Video RCA jack in the back to my tv and the Phone out, but got the same results .good black and white picture with no sound or color.
I plugged into the earphone jacks in the front of the unit and was able to get sound. Do you think something is physically wrong with the unit? What controls the color output?
I took the cover off and cleaned the head with some rubbing alchohol, but it really was not dirty. It did not make a difference.
Do you have any other suggestions or do you know someone that could fix it?
I have several old home videos from the early 80s that I want to burn to DVD, but need the Beta player to work in order to do this. I have not used the unit in about 8 years and the last time I used it, the color and sound worked.
Thanks
Charles

Make sure the RF channel matches the one being used on the TV.

Hi, I need some help.
I have a Betamax sl2000. I hooked it up to my tv the other day and noticed that all my tapes are playing in black and white with no sound at all. If I plug headphones into the headphone jack I cab hear sound, but none will come through the TV. Any one know what is wrong? Do I have something hooked up wrong? I remember viewing these about 10 years ago and I had color and sound. If anyone has any suggestions, please email me at [email protected]

I have on hand a Sony SL-5400 Betamax (format). I'd appreciate if someone could help show me where I can find a schematic diagram and where to buy the complete set belt it requires. Thank you so much.

Tania - The audio and video out jacks on the Beta vcr should be connected to that A/V inputs of the TV like a standard VHS deck. The TV should be set to the A/V in mode.
If you opt to connect it by the antennae jacks remember to set the TV/VCR switch on the Beta VCR to VCR so that it's signal will show up on the TV. As for RF channel setting they need to match on VCR and TV. If the VCR's RF unit (located under the panel on top of the VCR) is set to channel 3 turn the TV to 3.
hi everyone, hope someone can help me. I just got a sony betamax sl-hf600.. its working.. but for some reason, no matter how i re-arrange the av jacks i can't get a picture or sound on my tv. Any suggestions? i.e should the tv be on channel 4 while on the beta machine it should say channel 3 or something like that? thanks!!

Hi, I have a pair of Sanyo VTC M40 VCR's for sale. Neither of them work & have no remote controls but they are complete. One of them was working until recently until it started refusing to rewind/fast forward. I suspect it is the usual Sanyo reel drive idler problem. I am loathed to just throw them away as they would provide useful spares to anyone who has one of these machines. I am asking £ 30 for the pair which includes 30 -40 used tapes, many of which are unboxed but have been stored in a dry environment. I am located in Okehampton, in the middle of Devon & am willing to deliver within a 20 mile radius.
a merry x'mass to one and all. need to source service manual for sl hf 100.

To Ron. Your best bet is to put it up on eBay anmd get some money for it, but first you're going to want to at least check it out by playing and recording. If you can verify that it works properly you can get a lot more from people looking for a machine to transfer their tapes to DVD.
I have an old Zenith Beta Video Recorder ( model number VR9760W) that I purchased back in the early '80's. I have had it stored in a closet for several years. It was working perfectly when I put in storage. I also have the Quick Reference Guide and manual for it. I don't know if I still have the wired remote for it or not. My wife wants me to get rid of it and I just can't justify throwing it away. If anyone out there is interested in this unit, please contact me at my e-mail address.

If the zoom feature isn't working on your camera it's likely because the tiny rubber belt that works the zoom is decayed to the point of unusability.
Hi---I'm looking for home recordings of 'the A-Team' from the 1980s--episodes recorded from ITV in the '80s on Betamax. If you have any please contact me or sell them on ebay. Thanks.
Roderick,
Thanks!
To Pat Moylan RE special tapes / mould
With regards to your chances of rescueing mouldy beta tapes - it depends on 2 factors the 1st being how deep the mould has got into the tape ie if it is only on the edges you have a good chance of saving the footage if its right across the width of the tape I doubt your chances. The 2nd factor is how much trouble you are prepared to go to? This is how I have salvaged some rare Beta footage and transfered it onto DVD successfully - first you will need to fast forward the beta tape to the end [ preferably in a tape winder or if not in a Sanyo vcr where tape is not wound round the heads/drum for FF or REW ] once you have done this you will need to open the cassette and remove the spools then unclip the free end from the empty spool next you will need to open a VHS cassette unclip the free end on the empty VHS spool [ if you can find a VHS spool that the top clear section twists off to seperate from the bottom half of the spool that would be ideal ] next clip the tape in the loaded beta spool into the empty vhs spool - care is now needed to load the vhs cassette with the loaded beta & empty vhs spool once loaded make sure the beta spool stays central in the vhs cassette next load the vhs cassette into a vhs vcr and rewind beta tape onto the vhs spool - this done - open the cassette blow out any loose mould etc twist off top of the now loaded vhs spool and lightly brush any surface mould away then twist top of spool back on then unclip the end of the tape still in the beta tape and connect an empty vhs spool to the end of the tape. Now you can either take the tape to a video hire store and get them to run it through their tape cleaning/winding machine or you can run it bacwards and forwards in a vhs vcr a good few times opening up the cassette often and cleaning away any mould that collects inside the cassette and on the dust pad inside the cassette once you have got rid of all/as much as you can of the visible mould you will need to reverse this process and get the tape back onto beta spools and re-load the beta cassette - obviously you will need to visibly check for any remaining mould & decide if you think it is worth trying tape in your beta vcr!I have successfully saved a few tapes recenntly by this method without causing any harm to the vcr but I don't think I would risk playing them in a SL-HF950 and when they are transfered to DVD you will never have to worry about the footage again [ if DVD is as good as they say it is for longevity!?]Like I said 2 main factors to consider and by no means a quick fix to the mould problem but this I think is about the best chance you will have to save your beta tapes
regards and good luck & merry Christmas all
Ron

Have look here http://www.palsite.com/kcon.htmlThat should tell you all you ever wanted to know about the wiring of a K-connector!
Question on HVC-2400 Trinicon camera: I would like to know what color wires on the supply cable go to (in relation to the connector), since I do not have a deck anymore, I would like to put the camera to good use and wire up for the occasional shots using standard equipment (the tube camera is worlds apart comparing to the CCD-based ones, therefore using it for those "artsy" video clips). Luckily I know the cam needs a 12vDC (at least 850mA) input to the red (pos.) and black (neg.) threads and learned the video output through trial and error (black coax); but it's sure a rat's nest of wires.
Also, the zoom control on the camera is non-operational, is this because of the lack of connection?
Sorry for the ramble, but the camera was sitting around for a while and cameras are needed, heh.

I had some experience with moldy tapes a few years back when I had been gottena job to transfer some PAL Bea tapes to NTSC VHS. The tapes had been in storage in Central America fro a number of years and had aaquired some mold on them. I found no way of cleanng them off and Not wanting to possible damage my SL HF 950 with the tapes first trie them out in an old top loader NTSC deck I had- I knew they would not play properly but I could discover if they would load up and move freely. Sadly they did not. I informed the owner and maanged to salave free moving sections of the tapes by splicing the good parts itnto an old tape shell and transfering them befor egoing on to the next one. The tapes owner was just pleased to get what I could. The original bits of Beta tapes were not retained for future use, since some of the sections were only a few minutes long each. The mold tended to make the tapes stick to itself adn the VCR would break it at certain points. There was one tpe that was so bad looking did not even try anything with it.
I have some old beta tapes that are very special and I need to tranfer them to DVD, but thay have mold all over them (I live in Hawaii). Dose anyone know of a beta tape cleaner.
Hi Remember the hastle I had with my SL-HFR70? Now it seems to be getting worse, now it only plays a few minutes than stops no matter where I put it. It appears to feel that it thinks the tape is at the end when really its not. I have come up with a idea I have another one so I think I can change the hubs (the assembly that the cassette sits on) and I will see what happens but any help would be niceMerry Christmas
hello
What does it mean when the Clock on the SL-8000 flickers? Could this be a powerfault? can it be why the picture on playback is poor?
Here's a problem with my Sanyo top loading 3900.I have to reset the clock each time I turn the unit on! This just started,so I'm not sure what happened.Every time I use it the clock starts flashing 8888 and I reset it,play a tape, turn it off.The next time the samething;the clock needs resetting.I've unplugged it several times to no avail.Would anyone have a fix on this? Thank you.Carl S NYC

Glenn, you're pretty much SOL as far as the old reel-to-reel units go. There's a group on Yahoo called Old VTRs you can mebbe ask around about....
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/oldvtrs/
You might get lucky but given those are VTR in the 35 year old range and didn't have nearly the user base that Betamax enjoyed in it's 27 year run you'll probably end up having to buy one off of eBay to strip for parts.
I have a A/V transfer business and need to fix my old 70's Sony reel to reel Model AV-3600 VTR. It needs new heads. So does my AV-3400 (they use the same ones)Does any one know where I can find these parts? Sony does not carry them anymore.

The BIs hi band switch on the BMC-1000 is the smae as the one on the SL HF-1000. Turning it off gives you regaulr BIs whihc is the same as you get on n SL HF-750 or amodified SL HF-900. When it is on the only way to play back tapes and get best possible image is on an SL HF 1000 and I am guessing SL HF2100 or SL HF 2000 although I dont own eithehr of these units to check.
In response to an earlier ? There is currently a Smasung multistand VHS VCR available for about $300 US whihc can do standards conversions. I own one and for a recently made Korean unit I am very impressed. It can play any type of VHS tape on any TV (or make it possible to record it on a VCR in a different standard. One can also hook a PAL Betamax up to the inputs an NTSC one to the outputs and allow the unit to work as a pass through convertor and copy a tape. Or switch the set up around to go from NTSC to PAl. They are available off the shelf at several Pakistani run video stores in Chicago or one can order online from walmart (they want more $$$)
olive_e_thomas@yah¿¿.c¿m
I'm guessing just standard SuperBeta in the BI speed. Anyone with a BMC-1000 or at least the manual wanna enlighten us?
Yea, but if you switch it off, what does the unit record in?
olive_e_thomas@yah¿¿.c¿m
I've never seen a BMC-1000 up close but I have an image of the owners manual's parts and controls layout page and it mentions a BIs 'SHB' switch underneath with the clock battery.
On that BMC1000, if there is a switch for Beta-1 SHB, turning it off will make it record in...Superbeta? Normal beta?

A couple rare Beta items on offer on eBay...
Item one is a Sanyo VCR-7300 portable HiFi Beta VCR with K-connector camera input. Was the only way you could record Beta format video in HiFi stereo in the field.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=5841047659
Item two is a BMC-1000K Betamovie 'Pro' camcorder on offer from Canada...
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=5841070598
Records in the BIS speed 6 mhz "HiBand" format. 280 lines of resolution compared with 270 for NTSC SuperBeta and 240 for regular NTSC Beta (and a mere 230 for VHS).
Even though there's no in-camera playback this (rather wastefully) has an electronic viewfinder instead of the optical TTL reflex viewfinder on other Betamovies.

Olive,
The SL-T50ME will only record and play all the formats it wont convert. Some very expensive VHS multisystem units could convert or at least playback NTSC converted suitable to watch on a PAL TV. I have seen one but could not tell you the model.
The best thing for Paul to do is use a computer (or have someone with a suitable system) record off a Beta VCR and do him a DVD. Most DVD players are multisystem so it just comes down to him playing back through a later model multisystem TV.
regards Noel
olive_e_thomas@yah¿¿.c¿m
That should've been SL-T50ME

I have a Multisystem Betamax (SL-HFT-50ME). Does anyone know if I can feed it an NTSC signal and have it record a PAL tape - in case I wanted to help the fellow above me?
HELP ! I have two old Betamax tapes which are in NTSC (USA) I need either a Betamax player which can play NTSC, or someone i can send the tapes to - so that these can be converted to PAL (UK). Better still if they can be converted to DVD, or Betamax PAL (normal UK) or just VHS. Anything ?
Is there anyone living in surrey or hamshire? that is intrested in Betamax? I have a SL3000 together with the tuner TT3000 allso the Camera to match I came to me in a Will and the Player dos not work The tuner and camera work as far as I can tell, i am looking for somon willing to look at it, john Davies.
I thought BetaMax had a resolution of 300 lines?
olive_e_thomas@yah¿¿.c¿m
I don't know if the BMC-1000 has the SuperBeta "kill switch" in the clock battery compartment. I would suspect that it doesn't since the 1000 used the faster BI speed exclusively and was meant for people who bought the SL-HF 1000.
"Regular" SuperBeta has a bandwidth of of 5.6 mhz with a resolution of 270 lines whereas Super HiBand has a bandwidth of 6.0mhz and a resolution of 280 lines - standard Beta is 4.8 mhz with a resolution of 240 lines.
VHS has a bandwidth of 4.4 mhz and a resolution of 230 lines and S-VHS has a bandwidth of 7.0 mhz and resolution of 400 lines.
Of course ED Beta "PWN3D" them all with a bandwidth of 9.3 mhz and 500 lines of resolution.
I am located in Liskeard, Cornwall. For details of this service e-mail me at [email protected]
Any image quality differences between the GCS-1 and the BMC1000 when recording in normal non-super beta mode? Can you record in normal Beta mode with the BMC or no?
olive_e_thomas@yah¿¿.c¿m
Structurally the GCS-1 more resembles the BMC-1000 than either the 550 or 660. However the BMC-1000 records in the BIS speed whereas the GCS-1 records in BII like the 550 or 660.
The BMC-550 and 660 are pretty much the same camcorder with only the word "SuperBetamovie" on the 660 as well as a differing color scheme to distinguish the two. Both units could record in the SuperBeta format as could the GCS-1.
Curiously the switch in the clock battery compartment that enables SuperBeta recording is labeled "Hi-Band" which is what SuperBeta is called in the Japan home market.

Hi, I have a Sony GCS-1 Betamovie camcorder. Any information about it? I know it is the industrial version of the Betamovie camcorder, but which one? BMC550, 660, 1000? All information would be appreciated. Thanks.
BETA MAX PAL/SECAM In the early 1980's I recorded family Betamax video in the middle east where PAL/SECAM was used. I tries viewing these tapes on the US Betamax vcr machine and of course it doesn't play correctly or even close.I should have brought back one of the players back to US. The other problem is the TV here, I don't know if they would show the PAL format.Anyway ,any ideas what I can do? Are there machines that can play everything and at different countries voltage system? Thanks Tony

To Bjorn: I would be interested in a mail order Beta repair facility. Where are you located?
HI FOLKS, IF ANYBODY IS INTERESTED IVE 2 X SLHF 950 s (PAL) IN PRISTINE CONDITION, 1 X SLHF 100P IN EXCELLENT CONDITION FOR SALE. ALSO AN SLHF100 FOR SPARES, I BOUGHT IT IN THE EARLY 80s IT USED TO EITHER RECORD AND NOT PLAYBACK OR VICE VERSA I CANT REMEMBER, I USED THE AUDIO LEVEL DISPLAY FOR ANOTHER MACHINE AT THAT TIME. THESES WILL BE ADVERTISED ON EBAY MAYBE TONIGHT OR TOMORROW SO IF YOU WANT TO HAVE A LOOK AT THE PHOTOS AND SEE THE TEXT AS BELOW. I WILL SELL ON OR OFF EBAY, SO EMAIL ME IF YOUR INTERESTED, DAVE.
NOT THE USUAL WORN OUT BETAMAX MACHINE, THIS ONE HAS BEEN KEPT IN PRISTINE CONDITION, AND AS AT ONE TIME I HAD SIX OF THESE MACHINES JUST TO RECORD PROGRAMS WHILE I WAS WORKING AWAY IT'S HAD LITTLE USE. IT WAS SERVICED BY MY SONY ENGINEER ABOUT SEVEN YEARS AGO THEN BOXED TILL EARLIER THIS YEAR WHEN IT WAS TAKEN OUT AND USED TO TRANSFER A FEW TAPES TO DVD AND IT PERFORMED PERFECTLY AS IT ALWAYS DID. I RECORDED A COUPLE OF TV PROGRAMS AND THEY CAME OUT SUPERBLY. AS YOU CAN SEE THE REMOTE IS LIKE NEW AND THE PICTURE I GOT WITH A DIGITAL CAMERA OF THE DRUM THROUGH THE OPEN CASSETTE LOADING DRAW SHOWS THE CONDITION OF THE MECHANICAL PARTS. THE LAST TIME I SOLD ONE OF THESE WAS ABOUT 8 YEARS AGO FOR £500 TO SOMEONE ON THE BETAMAX WEBSITE.

Just after a few opinions. I'm hoping to launch an online facility for diagnosing troublesome and faulty Beta machines. I've been repairing and restoring machines for 5 years now, mainly to sell, but I am available to repair machines for those who just want to keep theirs running. If I was to launch a "mail-order" repair service (basically, the machine gets posted to me for repairs then I send it back) do you think there would be any interest in such a scheme? I am also planning to launch a "parts on demand" service, depending on the availability of parts. Finally, does anyone have a service manual for a Sanyo VTC-M30? Currently working on mine as a project, but one or two things are leaving be a bit baffled on it.

Boby,
For what model Betamax do you need the schematic? I have one for an SL-HF750 (known as SL-HF950 in the UK). Would that help? Let me know by sending me a private e-mail.
Best regards,
