Re: Sony EDBeta 7500 -

UPS dropped my machine after it was totally rebuilt, and the face plate has a one inch chip out of it. Does anyone have a 7500 for parts, or does anyone want to buy this electronically perfect machine (rebuilt by Mercury Keller TV in Ohio). Please let me hear from you. Thanks a lotSteve EdwardsBradenton, Florida USA

Boby,

Thank you to for the compliment, but I am still only a hobbyist at beta and then really only with PAL machines. The good thing about this forum is it brings together the combined experience of all enthusiasts. Olive for example seems to have a great depth of knowledge on NTSC machines and a wry sense of humour. Your knowledge of computers certainly is certainly greater than mine and contributes because you manage to dredge up heaps of information on the net. But what really matters is that you try and help people.

Juris, thanks for your complement. There many people much more clever than me . I present Noel Higgins for an example.(_^_) If you cannot get the part needed you can find 885551 in SL-HF XXX D Beta series for replacement (I find several of them are Identical esp "DIGITAL" model)or maybe earlier VHS model for canibalism. Sometime you can find scrap Beta from EBAY for a few bucks.

Welcome to the NTSC world.

The Mitsubishi 88551 is not from the SONY Corp, it was Custom made from Misubushi for Sony Corp. It is the Microprocessor of the SL-HF860D. It is the correct SMD IC wich is located on the uppermost PCB/(motherboard).

Juris;

The SMD IC that you told is the CPU of the SERVO,CLOCK,SYSCON etc. And the clock IC is CXP5016H wich drives/powering the FL Display that you told flashing (rapidly/slowly??). Yes the SMD IC is the controller of the clock but it is not the clock IC. If the IC you stated in the mail is Failed to operate then whole/some block of system doesnt work.

Boby,

It was the Sony customer service center that told me that it is this IC that controls the clock display. They also told me that the part number (provided to me by the repair shop)which was stamped on the old part is not a Sony part number.

You'll have to ask a 'guarantee' from the service Centre that the HF860D will work after the Microcontroller replaced with a new one.

Juris,

I've read your mail. That wasnt the clock IC .It's called Microcontroller/Microprocessor (SMD IC/Suface Mount Device). The IC is related to system loading and CAP wich belong to the SYSCON block. That IC is difficult to replace/remove ,you'll need special DeSoldering Gun. Now it makes sense if the Tape jammed immediately upon loading but not absolutely cause by the IC in some cases.

I guess you'll have to wait from the Vendor or you can call him by Netophone(Long Distace call using PComputer)

Just in case someone does not know. If they are metal based SP tapes then they will kill the heads of domestic beta machines. If they are normal oxide tapes then they will be OK.

ppcusr...

Your SL-2710 might not play its own recordings correctly because it cannot record/read the control track properly, because the tape path might not be adjusted properly or because the head that reads the control track (the ACE head) is worn.

I would suspect a worn head on this 20+ year old unit.

Nevermind that "professional" video equipment usually comes without a tuner or timer and use BNC connectors for the video.

I havent get the picture that the clock flashes rapidly or juast like heartbeat. If the clock in working order ,whatta hack with the flashes. Clock always flashes when not programmed.

So now it's consider the loading sequence is working? Does the deck play well?

What good does it make for the 860D keeps in service centre when there's no part/s to be replaced. I imagine it's been there for almost a year. I'd rather have it returned .

Can you email me the Vendor URL in S'pore?

Boby,

I never had an opportunity to use the 860D at all. As I mentioned, I bought it on Ebay. Upon arrival, to test the unit I put a tape into it, and it jammed immediately. That is why I took this machine to the repair shop. They put in a new loading mechanism. When I called them to ask if the machine was ready to be picked up, the technician told me about the clock flashing and said he was trying to get the IC to fix that problem. Unfortunately, he has not been able to get the IC, because Sony has discontinued it. When I started researching the availability of the IC on the Internet, I discovered that it still available from a vendor in Singapore. However, the vendor didn't replied when I asked him how to pay for the IC.

Well....as far as I know CX series IC lasts very long time unless there's something wrong in its environment that cause to faulty. Since there's no one you rely on, you can let the technician do his job.I dont really get what's the problem in your HF860D except the fast-blinking FL display and the one you've just told me. Anyway there's no relation between the jammed loading mechanism and the clock IC .

Does it play well before the trouble?

HF860D is a quite complex machine really, it plays prerecorded Movie from HF1000D and HF95D much more better than you can imagine. I'd rather have my DVD Ebayed......

Boby,

The machine is still in the possession of the shop where I had taken it because the loading mechanism was jammed. It was the repairman at the shop who told me about the clock display. Since I don't have the machine here at home, I cannot confirm what is really happening. I can only assume that the repairman knows what he is talking about. After all, he is supposed to be the expert, not me.

Juris;

I ve checked CXP5016H ,sorry to ask what makes you think it's the IC (are you sure?/I dont trust Sony serviceman) there're some component next to ;IE transistor/xTAL /LINEAR IC ,etc have it checked also. Do the clock affect other operation such as Programable Timer or just blinking very fast. You can swap to other deck to make it certain(if you have one).

there could be crack on PCB path (wich makes bad contacts [corrosion []}.

HEATS UP the IC sometime fixed (Solder the IC legs in high temperature Gun) but there could be possiblity to failure [make sure not too hot].

Hi I have a SLO-325 and it only plays one tape that I have, all the others have very disorted video, You only see the video for a few seconds and than it goes messy and recyles the same video again The sound is OK, Its like its hitting a bad spot every few seconds, It does have slo-mo and the video gets a little better but still there is noise, why its only plays one perecorded tape and not any other perecorded ones beats me Any ideas?

Noel,

The vendor in Singapore e-mailed me a picture of the packaging for the IC I need, and only the 3 Betamax models I mentioned are listed on on the label. Therefore, it doesn't seem likely that it was used in any of the Sony VHS machines. I appreciate your input though.

By the way, Boby once mentioned that you work for the Australian Government. I had contacts in your Government while I was working for the U.S. Government in Washington, D.C.Any discussion about my work would have to be in a private e-mail however.

The clock display just keeps rapidly flashing. The IC needed to fix this problem costs $20 in Singapore, but the vendor never answered me when I asked him how to make the payment. I, too, doubt that the clock in the HF950 would work in the HF860D. Anyway, the problem is that the IC is bad, not the clock itself. The IC I need is supposed to work in the following models: 860D, 870D, and 701D. I was thinking of selling the 860D on Ebay, but I need to get it fixed first, unless I sell it really cheap as a parts machine. However, that would be a shame since many of the other parts in it, including the video heads and loading mechanism, are brand new.

Boby,

Since coming to the United States, my wife has joined me in the Christian faith. That's another reason we don't celebrate the Chinese New Year.

As you and others using this chat page may remember, I started hanging out here because I was trying to locate an IC for my beta. Although a source in Singapore indicated that 300 of the ICs are available over there, I still haven't managed to get my hands on even one of them. The vendor in Singapore has not replied to my inquiry about paying him for the purchase and the shipment to the USA.

Just saw your message regarding the Chinese New Year. I haven't been lurking around the chat page as much as I did before and was wondering why you haven't e-mailed me in such a long time. I just stumbled across your 'chat page' and am curious about something. Is the "Betamax PALsite" more involved with PAL format rather than NTSC, or is the PAL meaning 'buddy' or 'friend' instead of the format? I will be moving soon and parting with some NTSC Beta equipment - not used in many years. I am an eBay user (buyer only to this point) and may post my items for sale there unless there is some interest here beforehand. Thanks. Wes in Michigan, USA

Hi,

Thanks for the replies, I have now sorted the problem which was a lot simpler than first anticipated. It turns out the DVDR was set in "SP" recording mode and that is where I was losing the sound quality. I have since changed it to "HQ" recording mode and the sound is perfect!

Addition to my last post;

In the process of recording from Analog RF (BETA) video streams need to be converted to digital stream inside the DVDR deck , generally during the conversion there could be some signal loss. That might be the reason of some unSynchronized movie (A/V).

I'm not saying that the DVDR is bad, even a Fabulous capture Device can do the same sometime.

My pardon (Stuart/Olive);I think we have Synchronazation problem here ( As I found in VHS tape 6 years ago when first SVCD Recording introduced), the picture and sound doesnt go together (Synch). And the Audio recorded seems to be in higher BitRate. As Olive said using RCA source for Recording might improve the result.

Hints; Some DVDR have hardrive inside upgrading Device can enhanced performance.(This is the last effort if you still insist on recording with Synch problem)or Tweaking your DVDR deck using software given by the Manufacturer(usually a cd contain data for writing into the machine BIOS). [[Tweaking can cause malfunction do at your own risks]]

It sounds like you should use direct A/V connections to the DVD recorder. There may be an incompatibility with the RF modulator. If I recall there were several flavours of audio transmission formats in the European market and you may have one that's just off enough for the DVD recorder to muck it up. Especially as the VTC-5000 is a mono unit.

As I said you might want to use A/V inputs instead of the RF input. You'll some adapters for that but it ought be worth it as RF to RF linking for copying isn't a good idea anyway.

Hi Olive,

I have tried the player independantly and the sound is fine on each tape. I also have recorded other input devices (VHS and DVD) to the DVD Recorder and their audio is fine.

I havn't tried splitting the sound as I have just been using a normal RF connecting lead to go straight into the DVDR. When you play the Beta through the DVDR the sound is perfect, but when recorded onto DVD it takes on this slightly higher pitch, it doesnt happen with the VHS and DVD conversions though, just the Beta one.

Thanks for your reply.

Stuart - have you played the VCR alone and not through the DVD recorder in order to root out some sort of line problem or problem with the DVD recorder's audio settings?

Did you use a Y jack to split the mono audio coming out of the VCR to the DVD recorder's stereo inputs? Assuming it has RCA inputs and and not just that SCART connector thingy.

Otherwise you might try adjusting the capstan speed.

Hi,

I am in the process of converting some betamax tapes to DVD. My Betamax player is a Sanyo VTC 5000 and I am recording onto a Goodmans DVDR. The tape is fine when played through the video machine and upon recording is fine also. The DVD gives a great picture with nothing lost.....however the sound is a little funky!! The actual sound is all there but the voices sound as though they have taken a little helium, it's not really high pitched but just a little above what it would normally be, the picture doesnt appear to be playing faster but maybe it could be by a slight bit.

Is there anything I can do to fix this at all?

Any advice greatly appreciated,

To John Stone: There are video transfer services available in most areas. Most of them keep a betamax around for transfers. By now you should be transfering those to DVD as VHS is getting to be the new Betamax in terms of "obsolescence"...

Check the Yellow Pages for "Video Transfer (or Duplicating) Services".

There are are also transfer services listed in the PALsite directory...

Scott, I think you are on the right track with the CTL head. It probably needs replacement, yet you may extend its life by readjusting it a little. There is an adjustment screw on its assembly that will tilt it forward a little. Then it may be able to pick up a stronger signal.

Replacing this head requires a tape path adjustment afterwards.

I have a SL-2700 that plays back tapes from other machines fine, but doesn't want to track it's own recordings correctly. You can almost get it perfect it you go hard over to the right on the tracking knob, but it needs a little more. Every other Beta I've had you never had to adjust the tracking for it's own recordings, just for tapes on other machines. Is there an adjustment? I remember some kind of tracking adjustment on one of my other machines I don't have anymore, but I think it was the control head and had a screw you could turn in a and out to change things. Am I on the right track? I do have a new head in case I need to replace mine, is that easy to do? Thanks!!

Hey Boby,

that software is great, its been about a while. I toyed with it on a pair of BVW-40P 's and a VO-9800P, untill I lost a 40P and made it pointless for editing.

You could probably crack the control code faily easily for the SLO machines with the edit plug on the back.

I also had software at one stage for controlL which worked with the 950 and a hi8 machine I had. Its really all quite pointless in the bigger picture if your serious about editing, as you would go digital in some form nowadays. I have a fetish for ControlL stuff, I gave Noel a COOL control L remote that works lots of cool stuff on 950 's.

The SL-8200 is a nice model to have if you have room to collect them, but if one has Beta tapes recorded in the BIII speed or in HiFi or SuperBeta it's not of much use if you need a Beta for tape transfers or just to play back the old tapes.

I wouldn't want to risk more than $35-$45 for one sight unseen especially if shipping is cross-country.

Hi - I'm in posession of a Sony Betamax X2 model SL-8200 that is in working condition and has just been taking up space in my attic. My plan is to sell it on eBay, but I thought first I would come by this chat page to get an idea as to what I should expect to sell it for. Is this a desirable model? And what should I sell it for? Any and all help is appreciated. Thanks,

Norton

Hi! I have a C9 which unfortunately has just given up the ghost and I still have several tapes I want to copy to DVD. I would like to beg borrow or buy one in Good working order to complete the task (including film of my wedding day!!)(sympathy vote?) I am willing to travel to pick it up and if it is a loan-I will be willing to leave some £ security while I use it. I live in Coventry so 100 miles radius would be neat.I should add, please, please, please.

Finally got a Beta that records in B1-- the NEC VC-N65EU but so far have been very disappointed in it.For one thing the tuner circuit bd was broken clear in two making recording through the RF connector impossible. After 23 jumper wires across the traces I now have it woring and recording perfect except it will not record in Beta Hi -FI even through the RCA inputs. Playback of a recording made on another Beta HI-FI plays back great in HI-FI .Does anyone have a copy of a service manual for this animal? Thanks

I have a SL 3000 UB --TT3000 and the Tritcon camera bought circa 1976.A great piece of equipment but little used. It was put away soon after it was bought.I have now retrieved it from store room and connected it up and run it and it works just as it did when it was put away. Now it is going up for sale with 28 tapes anybody intersted can make an offer (not a silly one)

To B Graves. It could be that the faceplate had been removed and reinstallted with the record slider in the wrong position and it is actually stuck behind the button it's supposed to press. Try removing and reinstalling the faceplate - making sure the record slider is in the released postion.

I have just bought a used Sony SL-HF500 deck, which works well in "Play." But when I tried FF, Reverse, etc., I got nothing. A closer look showed that the "Record" switch -- a kind of slider switch that apparently locks in at the "Record" position, is stuck in that position. Trying to push it out of that position (that is, from right to left) with what seems reasonable torque got nothing. Is there a way to release that Record switch? Any ideas on why it's stuck?

Any information appreciated.

HiYou won't need a twin phono splitter..trust me..........If you stumped Maplins then i'm surprised at THEM.The BNC socket plugs (with phono socket at the other end) are available from CPC the mail order distributor.Try their website http://www.cpc.co.uk.You will find just about every connector ,plug, socket e.t.c that you would ever need and at bargain prices too, especially if you order more than one.Good luck ...............Kevin

Thanks for the advice K Lambert. I can suss the phono part out- only one socket at the back of the beta so will need a twin phono splitter. Easy done. Took a picture of the video output socket to Maplins- totally stumped them! Only room for a small horizontal connection- doesn't look a BNC connection? Or Is that what it is right enough?
