To Dave HaddawayYes i agree, like i stated anyone without any experience of vcr's should not really attempt cleaning their machines heads but some ask for how is the best way and i inform them of their options and the risks involved. For the record i've only had to clean the heads on any of my machines once and that was through a 'rogue' E-bay purchase desribed as 'excellent'.I found that if you use a good tape in the search modes in either direction for long enough it has the same effect eventually and lessons the risk of any kind of wear or damage. As to your last remark, i do this as a hobby and so am after NO reward as many will verify and have never had to clean any 'others' machines.I also feel you sell quite a lot of those abrasive items......am i right..?I also think most would appreciate this info as to SPARE them expensive head replacement bills in the future....you don't replace video heads too by any chance???

Betamadmax: You're welcome.Basically if you use good quality tapes then you should have no head cleaning issues. The older well worn ones are the very thing you should be wary of.Using a normal tape is'nt required to keep the heads clean the normal(or new)tapes ensure you won't have 'blocked head' any problems. If you ever come across a later Sanyo vcr from 82/83 i would recommend this for winding the tapes with if not to use as well.It will keep the tapes in as good a condition as you can get.Providing it's had the lower idler and reel drive belt renewed..............Kevin

To Betmadmax :The best way to clean a vcr's heads is manually but if you have no experience and don't know what to look at or touch i would'nt recommend it.The heads are extremley small and VERY fragileAll a cleaning tape will do is cause slighlty more abrasion to the heads ....ALL OF THEM and move the dirt around a bit.If the video heads gets blocked the head gap has oxide particles or other foreign bodies!!The picture search won't cause any heat a bit of friction maybe. The FF and REW even more so and even with a slightly less back tension, it's still not as good as having the tape rewound into the shell.Sanyo were the only Beta manufacturer to see this (from the 1982 VTC5000 ).The amount going strong today backs this up and maybe their video head design was stronger than some others. If you find using a certain older tape clogs up your heads........... BIN IT!!!!!!.It's the easiest and less frustrating thing to have to do.if that Sony C6 you bought was'nt used for a while you'd be surprised how much dirt/oxide and nicotine stains can build up around the tape drum/guides e.t.c especially if it's been stored in a cold, damp loft or shed.....i've seen a few like this.....That could be why it was the way you described when first using it.Hope this helps................Kevin (UK)

ohh, ok. i have 10 sealed blank tapes, should i just put one in, press play then fast wind forwards? for how long? would a L500 tape be too long? do the machines get hot if fast forarded too long, its an awesome machine. i cant believe how big it is, i have it tuned in so i can record from dvd player too, got some good old classics on dvd, smokey and the bandit, italian job, monty python. i havent played a tape sice testing it because i wanted to clean it first.

To BetamadmaxHEADCLEANER!!!!! I would'nt put that anywhere near your machine..the heads on a Sony are vulnerable to extreme wear due to being laced up all the time in the fast modes.......picture search with a normal tape ,it will have the same effect only kinder to the heads( less abrasive).........Kevin

Vivian: First check to make sure you're on the right channel for VCR reception if you're going by RF connector, the channel of the switch in the back should match the one set by the TV set. Make sure you have antennae out going to antennae in on the TV set.

If that is not working or you are using the A/V outputs, it may be that the video heads might be very dirty or gone completely. Get a tape you don't care about and hold a section in PAUSE mode. The heads should start to clear up.

David: That Toshiba probably just needs new belts. There a fairly large flat belt on the bottom that's decay-prone. Check local repair places for VCR belt kits.

To David: A common problem with Toshiba Betas is that the rubber belt that drives the capstan rots away, leaving a gooey black mess. I suggest that you take off the bottom cover, carefully remove the rotten rubber as carefully as you can, and then use some acetone (nail polish remover) to clean off any black rubber residue. If you want to replace it with the real part, there are places to order new rubber (see post from Olive from a few days ago above), but I have found that a rubber band of the right size works just fine.

Hi, everyone. A month ago, I picked up a Toshiba v-m42 (1984) from a local Goodwill store for $15. Just today, I was finally able to get some beta tapes and see if it works. It does, sort of. Rewind and fast forward works just fine; they do the job, and I can see the moving picture on the screen. Unfortunately, I can't get videos to play. Any time that I press play, the machine will makes some noise for 3 or 4 seconds, without any picture or sound, and then shut off. Anyone know what the problem might be? I figure that my next step is probably buying a machine off of eBay if this one won't straighten up.

Sarah,

The most likely fault in your Sony SLC9 is that the gears for the load mechanism have broken. The fit on each end of the rod. See the pictures at http://www.palsite.com/slc9tech.html about half way down the page. They are hard to get and even harder to replace. You will need to find someone in UK who has those parts or a spare load mechanism for your machine. I would like to help you but Australia is a bit far away.

To Adaltman: At least I can tell you it's an NTSC VCR. On the model number do you mean an EDV-7500 or are you talking about a VCR-7500 (which would make that a Sanyo and not Sony VCR - there is an important difference)?

I own a SONY Betamax 7500. I tried to use it a few weeks ago,to play some old tapes;it seemed to work fine. A week later I tried again, and it would not work. I could FF and rewind tapes, but I don't think anything at all was happening when I depressed the play button. Does this give anyone a clue as to what might be wrong? Also, where can I buy a repair kit for this machine. I'll also need a repair (service) manual. Your help would be very much appreciated. Did you check to see if the cassette you were trying to record with still had it's record tab still in place? If the record tab is broken off, Sony decks will spit the tape back out if you try to record on it as a safety feature.

If the tape did have it's record tab still in place it could be that the leaf spring for the dectector is bent or broken. Not a hard fix but if you don't want the deck I could use it.

I am giving away a model SF-HF400 Betamax. It is in the original box with packaging. The last time I tried to record, the drive would kick the cassette out, so we have a definite problem. If you want it you will have to pay for shippiing from Milwaukee, WI. I'm guessing that will run about $25. Otherwise this beauty will end up in a landfill.

To Paul. There's a tracking control in the flipdown panel. Press both the "-" & "+" tracking buttons simultaniously to get the default center tracking. Then adjust up or down accordingly.

Slo-mo and frame advance features only work on tapes recorded in the B-III speed and will not work on B-II or B-I speed tapes. That was an intentional design decision on Sony's part

My husband and I just came across an old SL5200 and were surprised to find that it still works to some extent. All of the buttons function, however, when you play the video, the tracking seems incurably off and the picture is in black or white. The strange thing is that when the tape is rewound, or fast forwarded, the picture is in color. Any idea how to correct either of these issues?

Matt-If you get complete access to the idlers( remove the metal coverplate as before), if you look to the left hand side you'll see a small black pin lever. With the machine turned on push down on this lever till it bottoms .This will convince the machine it has a tape in when it does'nt (the tape shell pushes this in when loading a cassette). You will now get all functions without the risk of damaging your tapes,it let's you see clearly what's going on too.If pressing rewind or reverse search it will only last for a few seconds. This is normal as the left spool is'nt turning and the machine goes into 'safety'...no pulses received mode. Keep your finger on this fully and press play. when play has fully engaged press stop...does the right spool spin fast when pressing stop or is it slow so you can see the grooves at the top of the spool turning? It should be fast. This will confirm what needs to be done next.Whilst still holding the pin in FULLY press FF.With your free hand lightly hold the top center of the right spool(whilst it's spinning) and very gradually ingrease your grip.Is it hard to stop..or is it quite easy with very light pressure? This will determine if the reel torque and motor/belt/idlers are doing there job.If it was very easy to stop it turning then the idler/belt are not good or worn/dirty.I would suspect the FF is ok but the spool is slow when pressing stop?

Next i would get hold of a tin of isopropyl alcohol. While holding in the pin switch press FF and aim the tube of the sollution at the very top of the reel drive motor( where the shaft goes into the motor) and very lightly spray. If you here the motor speed increase then you should find when pressing stop the right wheel will spin fast eliminating your poor take up problem ( this was down to dirty contacts in the motor) a tiny, ting drop of oil after this in the same spot should finish this problem.Normaly if the motor is worn it will stall in play .The reverse search mode will usually highlight any capstan motor issues. If the pich roller is shiny or worn/contaminated or the capstan bearings dry you will get tape damage in reverse search. You can see this happening by observing the tape in reverse search as it comes through the pinch roller. If it make any creases or you can here the tape crinkling then it will need sorting. One way to test this theory out is to engage the search modes and slowly adjust the tracking fully from one side to another and observe the noise bars they should move in time with the movement of the tracking control either uwards or downwards ( depending which way you turn). If they don't or seem reluctant to go in time with the control ( especially in reverse) then you have a capstan speed issue( either poor tracking control contacts, faulty ic ,dry bearings in the capstan motor.Or a poorly aligned control pulse head .One other thing i've just found is if you remove the left spool and look underneath it there's a nylon locking bearing.Make sure this spins freely if it seems stiff or not too free a small drop of oil ( SMALL) will help and it enables the reverse search to take up the slack as it should.Hope this is all understood and i'm always here to help if you get stuck.Good luck...............Kevin (UK)

Hi Kevin - just wanted to give you an update - I made sure that all spindles for all parts were well oiled, and also that the reel was cleaned - AND IT WORKS!!! everything seems to go pretty good - only issue i have now is reverse scan - while playing if i hit rewind, it goes funny on screen for a moment, then static-like. When I hit play, it takes a moment or two to come back into play mode. Also - the takeup when i stop the tape sometimes isnt pulling the tape all the way back into the case but is going alot better - could it be a weak motor? Thanks again for all your help!

For Sale.I have two Sony betamax machines which I would consider as spare or repair items. One is a C6, cosmetically tatty, non working, but I think it is complete (cannot guarantee). The other is a C20, which also does not work, I seem to remember that it does not have the motor which operates the tape transport, but otherwise I think it is complete. No sensible offers refused. Hi Kevin - thanks for your help, I will give this a try tonight or tommorow - the wheel pulley - is that the middle piece between the bottom and top idler? I think I know which one you mean and am pretty sure I might have reversed it - i will tinker with it and see what happens - i'll keep you posted!

thanks again!Matt

Hi.If you have never heard about a real Sony "beta" syled neon lamp, go quickly check this item i am presently selling on ebay.fr :

http://cgi.ebay.fr/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=7591692773&sspagename=ADME:B:AAQ:FR:1

It looks like a Beta Blank Tape, but it is neon lamp that used to be in a video shop in Paris in the eighties. This is a rare collector.

MattAfter re-reading your query it sounds like the reel pulley has been put in unside down.(it should have the wider part toward the bottom)I would also recommend you replacing all the idlers and belts with new.It guarantees you less hassle in the future...........Kevin(UK)

MattThe bottom idler (FF&REW) is what pulls in the tape upon pressing stop.Have you made sure the wider part of the central(white) pulley is at the bottom?Have you made sure all the small plastic washers are in place?Did you fit a new drive belt? Also a tiny drop of oil should be put on the shaft of the idlers.(before you fit them).Have you tried cleaning the spool edges.(where the rubber idler tyre makes contact)? If all this does'nt help a tiny drop of oil on the reel motor shaft will help as this can get dry(where it enters the motor(it helps the contacts too).If you do this whilst the motor is in FF you will here an increase in speed if it is so.It could even be a substandard new top idler( yes i know it sounds strange but i have encountered this before).Hope this helps...........Kevin (UK)

Hi - I was wondering if anyone could help me out with a Sanyo 7200 Beta model. I recently bought this at a thrift store. Upon arriving home, I observed that it was able to play tapes no problem, however rewind and fast forward wouldn't work. Seeing this as being a common problem, I ordered a parts replacement kit. I then toiled away for a few hours, cleaned the tape path, and installed a new idler wheel (very bottom of the 3). Now REW and FF work great, but PLAY is not working. It is almost as if the right wheel (tape take-up) is not turning when i hit play. The tape begins to unspool from the left, but I have no takeup on the right. This causes it not to play, and then it shuts down. Upon ejecting, my tape gets eaten up as the take-up doesn't pull it back in. Any ideas or suggestions on how to fix this?

Thanks!Matt

Looking at the VCR from the front to back the ACE (Audio Control Erase) Head is in the 8 o'clock position next to the large Video Head. If it's not an electronics problem I'd suspect it's a back tension problem. Or at least the pinch roller needs cleaning and/or replacing.

To Karl again. On second thought. I was able to find a picture of your VCR and it turns out I was right all along though I should've been thinking PAL VCR...

Looks similar to the VCR models Sanyo built for Sears but is largely the same as the VCR-5000 PAL series...

Assuming the tapes average three hours in length it would take you only three and a half years to watch them all in a single sitting. It would take about 27/28 years to watch them all at the rate of one a day.

Obviously you'd want to cherry pick the ones you really wanted and eBay the rest in bulk lots...

To Karl. To remove the top of that you have to first remove the lid from the cassette loader. That is accomplished by removing the black strip of plastic covering two hidden mounting screws on that lid. You should now be able to remove the top cover of the VCR. You'll want to get a roll of double-sided tape to remount that plastic cover if the stickum is worn out.

MVC-700 is equivilent to the Sanyo VCR-3900/4000/4400 series VCR. If you can't get hold of an MVC-700 service manual you might find it easier to get one from any of the Sanyo models I mentioned.

I wonder if the guy above offering 10.000 videos is for real, there is no way anyone could even watch all of them in your lifetime, assuming each tape weighs about 1/2 lbs it would be about a ton . just thought I would point that out

I was wondering if you could help me solve an audio problem with my Murphy MVR 7007R Betamax. The sound on the machine seems to be warbley and after constant tuning i am not able to rectify the problem. I have tried more than one cassette so i know its the machine.I have tried to take the top off but because its a top loading machine the deck prevents me from completely removing the top thus i am not able to inspect the inside.I would be grateful if anyone could provide me with infomation or solutions to help me fix the problem.

It is good to see that Betamax fans still exist. If any of you live within reasonable distance of Sacramento, and would like to have for FREE approximately 10,000 Betamax movies, please email soon. The collection spans practically all of film history, foreign and domestic, classics and B movies, good, bad and ugly movies of all stripes. Many of the movies were never offered on VHS, and have yet to show up on DVD. At least five thousand are from Blockbuster type stores and Mom & Pop Video Huts that dumped their Betamax years ago. There are also thousands of off the air recordings of shows like NOVA, Masterpiece Theatre, Nightline, etc. There are also music performance videos, history programs, war documentaries in abundance, and a couple of boxes of obscure smut. Some may not play well, or not at all. Since I am giving these away, you play them at your own (or your machines) risk.

Here are the catches: You take them all, or not at all. I do not have the time or patience to make a list of all the titles. THE SHIPPING IS WHAT WILL GET YOU. The mass is close to a ton, and it is located in Sacramento California. The best “buyer” would live within a reasonable distance, rent a truck, and haul it away. Shipping costs otherwise would be ridiculous. And yes, this is for real. Please respond to my personal email regarding this, as I won't be monitoring this chatroom. Respond soon, for at the end of Feb 2006, they may be converted to landfill.

IIRC... I think the t-shaped hole punches correspond to tape length so the VTR "knows" how long the tape is.

Metal formulae should be cross-compatible. Just don't use on a standard Betamax.

I have a question about the difference between betacam metal cassettes and ed beta metal cassettes. are the tape formulations compatable? Also, on the bottom of the cassette shell there is a three sided opening shaped like the letter T between the reel hubs, the T for the ed beta tape has the top left part of the T blocked off, on the betacam tape the right side to the T is blocked off. Can some one tell me what the significance of this opening is? Thanks for any informationDale

Boby,

While you may not know everything about Beta, you do know much more than I do. It may be some time before I can chat with you again. My wife was in a car accident. Although she is alright, we have to deal with the insurance company that represents the family of the young, unlicensed driver who hit my wife's car. So I will be busy for a while.
