Thanks Olive. The problem I notice when I take the machine apart is that after the eject button is pushed, the plastic wheels stop turning, and the whole machine stops altogether. I think something is broken under the tape but since I cant remove it, Ill find some other ways.

To Charlie; The VR-9500 is basically an SL-2001 with a Zenith badge. The SL-2001 used a similar chassis to the SL-F1.
http://www.palsite.com/slf1tech.html
This model VCR used only one belt and that went to the cassette loader/ejector. If you're lucky only the belt needs replacing.

However more likely is that a pully gear has split.

Hello, I happen to own a Zenith VR 9500 Betamax recorder and the ejecting mechanism is stuck. All other features work, since the tape is inside, but all that happens when the eject button is pushed is a clickety-whirring sound and the machine stops. The tape will not come out. Is there any way to fix this?
Thank you so much for answering my question. I'll give it a try.

To Lereaux: What's likely happening is that the tyre that works the threading ring is not making contact with the plastic friction post. This seems to be a perennial fault with the front-loading SL-5xxx chassis as I've had a couple of those with the same problem. You'll need to roughen up both the tyre (ideally you'd want to replace the tyre if you can find the part) and the friction post it makes contact with with sandpaper.
I have a Sony "SL-5200" . It loads the tape but then ejects it. Can anyone help me? Please.
It's the industrial version of the ED Beta EDV-9500. Probably worth it if guaranteed.
here is a nice unit i think its the undustreal version of the SL-HF1000 but not at $2100!! I little high I fee, you could get a good betacam unit for that price, just thought I would point it outhttp://cgi.ebay.ca/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=9738825384&category=39830&ssPageName=FavMerch_SO:SI:IT

Hello !! @all betamax-fans i need guestbookentries in my new betamax-homepage http://www.betamax-video.de ! Beta is better !! Elmar
Noel,
Many thanks for your response. I shall investigate as you suggest.

Dan,
Best to unplug the unit because 1/ it saves power and 2/ it prevents the possibility of damage from a power surge (storm) situation. (unplug antenna connections as well.)Damage can occur from induced currents near a lightning strike.
Bill,
The AV/tuner switching is performed by a switch connecting through a 12V line to the switching circuit. The fault can be lack of 12V to that point (in an SLC40 it is usually a power suply regulator fault) I have had the actual switch go faulty. (and a dry joint can develop on the switch mounting connections)

i have a question that may or may not be important.
how is it best to leave an old betamax machine while not in use for periods of 3-4 days?
completely turned off and unplugged, on left on standby?
does it really matter? i always remove the tape after use and im constantly cleaning the top of the machine to remove any dust so i think it's quite well cared for.
Hello,I am looking for a Multi-standard Betamax VCR in working order. Perhaps SL-800ME or something like that. If somebody can help!! Thanks and regards.Alain
Just another plea to anyone who might be able to shed any light on a problem with my 1985 SLHF100 - bought new - there's an age giveaway! Despite about 4 years of disuse it has always performed perfectly. It has now decided to stop switching from AV to its tuner, whatever I try. It isn't a display problem, it definitely won't switch. Every other function is normal.
At the time I thought that there was no external reason. However, I suffered from a roof leak right over my computer workstation, in which the machine is located at present. I thought that it was protected from the water, but I may have been wrong, though there is no visible damage. There is a fix suggested on this site for refusal to switch TO AV, but my problem is the reverse.
I'd be very grateful if anyone could help.
Bill
Hmmmmm.
Nothing to do with the above! If your after a beta machine in Australia, check out betaheaven.com
cheers.
Here is a unit on Ebay that he is saying is HI-FI, I know for a fact that this is NOT HI-FI because I have one but it does have linear stereo but only plays stereo on this unit and wil not play tapes recorded in HI-FI you will only hear mono, the people that are bidding might not know that

Dan,
I don't think it's really worth the effort of rewinding the tapes manually. It's not going to make that much difference to the head wear really.
regards Noel
thats what i thought, i think i will just use it as little as possible and rewind the tapes by hand.. i have a permanant marker that fits perfect into the spool,
thank you very muchdan
Dan,
Re your SLC6 UB post on the 8th of June regarding a replacement head off eBay. The head would need alignment when put in your machine and not just a simple tape path alignment like the later model Sony machines, but an excentricity alignment (spelt?) which requires the use of a special fixture and dial guage to centre the head assembly on its mount so that as it spins it does not wobble.
regards Noel

Hi To Martha who has the SLO-325 I have the same unit and it does only records BI because it a industal unit and BI is the best speed to record, I am looking for the quide too and has the machine is from the 70s or we could be out of luck
Hi which is better the SL-HF750 or the SL-HF900?
Hey! Bought a Sanyo 4590 at an estate sale for $9. Got it home and found that it played just great - great picture, ff and rew worked fine!! Only problem was that the load/eject didn't work. But as it turns out, it's a great thing. There's a gay porn tape stuck inside. What luck! With my 4590 and a bottle of lotion, I now have a social life. I call the 4590 "Toby," and consider him to be my boyfriend. ;)
I have a Sony SLO-325 that seems to work great. My question is: does it only record in Beta I format, or is there a way to record in II or III? It will play back in any mode, but I want to record with a slower speed to get more minutes on my tape. The tapes I have will only hold 90 minutes in Beta I. Also, if anyone knows how to get my hands on the operator's manual (preferably downloadable and FREE), I would appreciate any suggestions.Thank you.
hello. i hve a sony c6 (as you know) i believe the head is worn, films are watchable but recordings i have made seem to make the picture flash over bright areas (shirts lights etc)i have seen a replacement head on ebay and the seller tells me it is already aigned and is a straight bolt in relplacement. i find this hard to believe.. how true is it?

Lesson #1 if you "find" a cellphone (or buy it from a cabbie as they're claiming) and you get messages asking you to return it, you better return it cuz if you go and take pictures of your skeevy selves and load personal data to it like your skanky ghetto-ass myspace account, the phone uploads it to the network server where the rightful owner can download it when they activate the replacement phone they had to buy because you're a pathetic dishonest loser...

Hello Guy, Most antisocial degenerates don't give much thought to their hypocrisy and hate, and tend apply the standards they could never possibly achieve themselves to others as a form of wishful thinking about how their lives might have been.
I hope that your buffoonish behavior on this board ultimately yields some at least unintended cathartic good to you for the benefit of everyone. But at some point, you are going to need some outside help. That's obvious.
Believe it.
Hey Guys
Do you want to tell the world that you are a lowlife loser with nothing better to do than abuse this site? If all you are is a pimple on societys ass, and all you have to do is spend your life looking at (and then idiotically reporting on this site) what folks buy on old bay then all you have to do is sign on using this moniker. At the same time, you can delude your psychotic self that the good folks on this site care. Remember, the only requirement is that you are a no life loser. Be sure to use CAPS liberally while you write your sociopathic text, and then be sure to sign it...thanks in advance, Guy

Hello, I bought this baby back a few months ago and want to help others that might have the same problem..
I bought this 750 on the old bay.
When I plugged it in , all the bells and whistles lit on real bright, BUT when I hit EJECT, I heard a grinding sound and the door didnt open.
I pryed on it with a screw driver and cracked the plastic.. No real damage WEEEE
But then I notice that the idiot seller put too many screws on the fron face plate when they must have cleaned it??
Took these screws out and now the door opens, but a little crooked and wont go back in unless I give it a little help..
The heads are bad , but it looks cool the way the door opens and REMEMBER to look for more screws than are needed.PS...need the heads and gears for crooked door...think heads are 4 head type.***Can 3 or 2 head work? thanks*****Guy
Thanks in advance Guy

I can't find audio out or in on the back.

Please answer soon.Guy
I tried my RMT-148 jog / shuttle wheel with my other working Sonys (SL-2710, HFR70 and HF2000) with funny results. The only one that responds to the wheel is the SL-HF2000, the one with only two heads that is unable to display any decent picture in any other mode than playback. At the price it sold, it would have been fun to enjoy some sfx heads. That, even if far from the 2100, would have made it a good unit with a sleek, modern look.
I also found that all my units respond to the eject button on the remote. A useless function to have on a remote yet it works !
Too bad I couldn't try it on my 900 as it is badly damaged and dead. Well parts of it survived, its head disc found a second life in the 2000.
I once owned a remote that had 14 numeric buttons to select channels. It was silver colored and had channel up/down on the side and a spring loaded slider for the record button. I don't know which model it belonged to. I remember that I could use it to select channels on my 2710, using the "10" button as the zero and the 11-12-13-14 buttons werent used.
WOW, I can't believe my luck! Look what just showed up on the bay:

hi I have a sony sl-hf100as, as, "i guess means australia" that i have had since 1984 "new"the rf unit has fallen apart and can not be repaired " vido in line" is there any other part that can be used
hi all, having trouble with my sony c9ub. will playback old tapes no problem and also record on old tapes no problem .on rewind machine struggles and stops after a few yards of tape and might next day rewind fully. when using brand new tape machine stops about 10 secs after recording starts. when i have tried to wind a new tape end to end machine chews it up, mostly at extremities,3 tapes to date arrghh ! can anybody please help.
[Quote from [email protected]]wish to dispose of approximately 500 Betamax tapes, plus a (possibly functional?) Sony SL-HF100UB Recorder. The tapes effectively represent an archive of off-air recording during the 80s and early 90s, with some earlier items and include films, TV specials, chat shows (Parkinson etc), music (mostly MOR, but some opera and classical) plus a few blanks. I acquired most of the tapes when I purchased the HF100UB, with the idea of cataloguing them and/or distilling the content to extract the subjects in which I am interest, but never got round to it. Anyone who is prepared to collect them from Harlow, Essex is welcome to have the whole lot free, gratis and for nothing. Email me if you are interested, but, please, don't ask for a list of contents, because there isn't one! Compiling such a list could be an interesting project for a Betamax enthusiast with time on his or her hands. If I receive no response by 14th June 2006, the whole lot will be dumped. [end quote]
Please note these items are no longer free, but going to the highest email bidder!!!
Further to I. M. Peing's comments on Beta remotes, I too was puzzled as to why Sony would duplicate a control (the jog/shuttle wheel) on the HF900 and leave it off the remote. Seems to me they could have kept the wheel inside the compartment door (accessible when the door is flipped down), leaving a smooth appearance with the door closed, and used the other one to better effect, i.e. on the remote!
For all of Sony's technical brilliance, the company seems to have made several marketing decisions that should have stayed on the drawing board, like this and the BetaStacker (with the 15-second exchange time between tapes, it would not seem to answer the need for recording a four-hour football game uninterrupted!), "Hi-Fi Ready" and the "talking Betas"... Too bad.
Best regards,Shelly Lipsey

WOW, what a find I bought on the bay.
I buy lots of HI end and low end Betamaxs, VHS,& Super VHS and if I were to buy a service book for every make and model, it would cost a fortune. Plus the service books are complicated???
Been waiting for a baby like this to pop up on the old bay and I GOT IT!
This old book will make it so I will be able to repair all my units and it takes me step by step ..WOW
SORRY guys, but you missed out on a BONANZA.

To I. M. Peing: Thanks so much for all the info on remotes. It's as much as I needed to know to buy wisely. You're a veritable treasure-house of useful things to know! Thanks again,Shelly
Regarding the remotes and the SL-HF900: The RMT-148 of which you speak (the remote for the HF1000) will work fine with the 900. If you try it and the LED flashes but it doesn't operate the machine, just make sure that the Command Mode switch is set to VTR1.
Two similar Sony remotes are the RMT-143, which is for the SL-HF750 and the RMT-164 for the EDV-9500. (I may have the 148 and 143 switched with respect to their respective VCR models - too lazy to get up and verify!) They will both work as well.
I do not own a 900 or a 1000 so I cannot say for certain, but my experience using jog shuttle remotes with units that do not come with such remotes (for example, using the 143 on a SL-HFT7), the shuttle dial works incrementally for the speeds that are native to the unit, i.e., 1/5 and 1/10 speeds in the case of the HFT7. But the 2X position is not going to work on a machine without an onboard X2 playspeed function (again, like the HFT7).
At this point I would like to briefly rant about why the 900 has two jog/shuttle dials on the unit and none on the remote. Okay. I've vented. Where was I...?
The jog dial might also work but if it does, it will work only for functions the machine already supports (in other words, it wouldn't be variable - at certain threshhold rotation speeds, the unit's incremental speeds like 1/5 and 1/10 would kick in).
Of course, other functions would work as well, such as the random tuning buttons, CH +/-, tape return, indexing etc., again so long as the unit supports those functions. The RMT-164 has digital picture functions that obviously will not work with the 900, but I suspect would work fine with the 810D and the HF870D which support these functions.
One more bit of info - don't get a RMT-124 or RMT-127. These are commonly available on eBay in the $8-15 range. But the only buttons of use on machines other than the HF300 and HF500 respectively are the basic transport buttons (and frame advance in the case of the 127). But the 14 channel buttons are presets, not random tuning buttons, and aren't any use on other models. You can think of them as being a transitional feature between simple up/down channel buttons and the later full-blown random access tuning. You're better off with a RMT-136 or RMT-156 or I think the 314, which are very simple remotes that have all the basic functions and only the basic functions.
The palsite, by the way, has a fantastic VCR model/remote cross reference. Go to the main page and click I think on the Repair Centre link.

Sometimes you get a gem, and I got a diamond..
altho I noticed after opening this beauty that a few parts were missing, it doesnt take away from the breath taking RED color..And my NEC parts Beta will do fine to relace the head drum, power supply and a board that im not sure what it does???
Stupid people had this fine unit standing in water in their basement, BUT the rust color and red paint is a perfect match..
When I get this baby to work, it should be as good as any RED colored Sony Betamax
SORRY GUYS, BUT I GOT IT FIRST..

I just bought a Sanyo VCR 3900-11 on Ebay. It works fine, except for tracking lines, which I can't get rid of with the tracking control. I heard the heads might need cleaning. How do you clean the heads ??? Also does anyone know where I can get a manual for that model or a similar manual. I am a newbie. Thank you John Davis
is anyone on here the same person who is shakynuber1 on ebay? seem to be buying and selling a lot of betamax stuff
Okay, Betaphiles, here's a puzzler for you! I just bought an SL-HF900 without its remote control. I've been looking separately for the remote that came with it originally, the RMT-125. This is a "plain vanilla" remote, i.e. limited to tape transport and channel changing functions, and apparently hard to find, too. Then I saw a pic of the remote for the SL-HF1000, the RMT-148, which has a jog/shuttle wheel, just like the one on the HF1000 AND the HF900 units. This remote looks way cool, and of course performs jog/shuttle functions from the comfort of yer own couch...!Question: will the RMT-148 work with the SL-HF900?Any help would be much appreciated. Thanx!A new Betaphile
Does anyone know where I could find an old manuel tape rewinder. I used to have one but find it, I have a couple of tapes that won't work in an electric rewinder. I use to use it to rewind vcr tapes by hand. If anyone knows where to find one please let me know! Thanks
yeah i saw that c6 on ebay too, i offered to buy the box and the remote for a set price, then also pay for postage and leave him the vcr, i also said i would pay to relist the vcr and he wasnt having any of it.
"we all know that porn is the driver of most new technologies..."Actually porn is not driving high definition, that's why it's not doing well.

Ooooh! The History Channel is doing an episode of Modern Marvels called "80s Tech". The Atari 2600 was featured in the section on video games.
For VCRs they've featured a Sony Betamax SL-5800 (you can see that it has the attachments for the BetaStack adapter) - including a CGI presentation of how a VCR works - perhaps the only time a toploading Beta was rendered in CGI animation. There's extensive coverage of the "Format Wars" noting that while Beta had a better picture VHS was able to win because of longer recording time and wider availability of VCRs and tapes due to more liberal licensing and also the fact that there were more porn tapes on VHS. And we all know that porn is the driver of most new technologies...

Hi If anyone is intrested I have a piano key type sanyo and 2 toshiba front loaders and a few vhs ones all up in my attic, sanyo was working, the rest some would and some wouldnt, dont ask which though, used to fix em yrs ago but havn't got a shed to work in anymore so gave up.
Kevin..thank you for the help;I'll be checking the unit and will advise accordingly. Carl
Carl: It must have been someone else with the clock ressetting after 'power on' problem. It was definetley a Sanyo 4400.No you don't 'unwrap' anything you have to remove the whole power board so you can get to the mains filter capacitor....unsolder it from it's position and replace with one of a higher value. That's if it IS causing the problem you may have a bad ground.Have you checked the mains lead for faults?I'm trying to visualise what the model you have looks like so i can see the layout.Get back to me..................Kevin
Kevin..no it was my Sony with the clock problem, now working properly and again, thanks. My Sanyo still blew the fuse last night. Do I unwrap the mains unit or must it be replaced?Thanks..Carl
Carl: Now if i remember your in the US yes?The mains filter capacitor it the first component the mains will go through.Look inside the machine ( mains off) on the right back side and you'll see the mains lead soldered connections. The capacitor is usually orange or brown in colour and a rectangular shape. As for your clock flashing fault.I was led to believe it was a Sanyo that had that fault not Sony??Maybe it was another person.I'm getting confused>>..............Kevin
Kevin..I had missed the posting. What actually does the mains filter capacitor look like?Is it that big chunk of electrical unit? How would I change it? I'm sorry to say the electrical portion of any unit always confuses me. I'm okay on adjusting, etc. Yes, my Sony's clock is functioning normally and thank you very much. Now if I could only get my Sanyo back on its feet I'll be fine. Again, thank you..Carl
Carl: I have replied to you in an earlier thread. It's most likely the mains filter capacitor, failing and overloading the fuse. This was a very common problem on the Sanyo 5000,5150 and i think even the 6500 (UK models). You'll have to upgrade the capacitor from 250v to about 350v.By the way did you solve the 'clock flashing' on your other model.I think it was you yes???................................Kevin
My Sanyo model 6300 looks and plays..until recently...like new, but now the unit keeps blowing fuses and I was wondering where I could check for the cause of this otherwise excellent beta's problem. Any info is certainly appreciated. Thank you..Carl
Volker.sI had that particualr model from new and after only a year it started to bump in rewind. To my dismay when purchasing the very much better Sanyo M20 i found all the later recordings i made on the V31B had recorded and mistracked ( during recording )at the exit point on the drum. The effect this gave was when playing back on ANY other Beta vcr a band of noise rose up and down the bottom inch and a half of the screen.(tracking would'nt remove it either!!)It also wore out five of my tapes that my previous Sanyo 5000 had treated very well.I think you'll find the problem you have too is due to the friction that builds up on the head drum of those 'always laced up' Beta's and it's probably misaligned or even worn out the exit point guide or part of the drum.Hence the effect when you removed and replaced it.my advice would be to get a SANYO...............Kevin

No. An SL-C9 cannot play NTSC tapes like those from the USA.
I am ready to purchase a Sony Betamax SL-C9E PAL vcr. This appears to be a european model. Will this play beta tapes from the USA?Thank you.
I have a betamax system for sale. No really! Honestly! Just email [email protected] !
D.Hill:I have a professional splicer for your tape.I do agree splicing in the middle can cause head damage but the splicer i have is a professional one that will NOT do any damage.I have used it twice for my self and for a few others and there have been no issues or problems. It IS a delicate procedure but this little machine really does come up trumps. The gap must be slightly narrower that the width of a human hair and NO overlaps( that's where the damage to the heads can be done)If you send the tape to me i'll sort it for you ....for free.Craig:Am i right in understanding your looking for a BETA machine amongst all that raving.?I regularly service the Sanyo models to a very high standard if your interested?Carl: The fuse blowing is probably being caused by the mains filter capacitor in the power supply.....................Kevin
To D.Hill
regarding your damaged tape - you say the cut is right at one end of the tape - so here is how to salvage the remainder.
Turn the cassete upside down - with the flap at the top you will see a lever in a recess at the top right hand corner - tweek this lever and open the flap - jam the flap open with something - now you can pull the tape out freely so pull the tape off of the near empty spool until the foil leader tape appears then fold where the leader joins the tape and you will be able to peel the tape away from the adhesive - then it is just a matter of cutting the damaged end back to the undamaged area and joining onto the original adhesive tape - just be careful not to handle the face of the remaining tape ie finger marks etc etc will not do your heads in the vcr any favours!!!Once all is connected back together twiddle the spools and get the tape back into the cassette and off you go.
Still cant get a message in the guest book. Just want to reply to all these braggers with a dozen or more Beta VCRs, adding that they wont part with any of them: lts you very guys who trawl the net auction sites and newspapers with all your spare time, buying up all the available machines, that are effectively killing our great hobby for others wanting to get into it! How many times have you read some poor geezers lament on this very site, asking for help trying to find a Beta VCR? Shouldnt really be too hard, youd think?! Well, actually it is beginning to be; and if some of us persist in being greedy hoarders, we will make it so hard to a point where potential newcomers to our hobby will either give up or lose interest, due to unavailability of a second- hand product, which, until only just recently, was easier to find than Paris Hiltons face peering out from the cover of a magazine. Tell me lm not correct, someone! Do you actually use all these machines? Sure, some of you may; but for the vast majority of us, do we really need more than about, say 3, of our favourite models? Lets have a sale, and sell off all our unwanted machines. lt will advantageous for us two- fold: First, newcomers to our great hobby will suddenly find it much easier to join us Betaphiles; and second, hopefully the sudden glut of machines on the market might even force the small percentage of us selling machines at ridiculously over- inflated prices to lower the price to something a little more realistic, thus helping us all again. We must take action and unite now, otherwise l can see our hobby dying a slow and boring death in the not- too- distant future. Long live Beta- Woo Hoo!!
Olive (or someone else), could you further elaborate on how to transfer the tape into a new shell? Are you saying that everything before the cut can be put into a new shell, and that everything after the cut can also be put into its own, separate new shell? The tape jam (and the cut) occurred right at the beginning of the tape, so it seems like I only need to salvage one side.
I wonder is someone can help me. I have a really good Sanyo beta model 6300 that keeps blowing the fuse. It just started and I don't know where to check to find the culprit.Any info would be greatly appreciated.Thank you. Carl
i love you olive
Kevin, I probably should have waited to take your advice, but I "solved" it in my own way. It turned out that part of the tape was twisted and stuck inside. I ended up cutting it out with a pair of scissors. This worked, and I was able to eject the tape, but the obvious bad news is that I've now lost the tape. There isn't any way to splice the two ends together, is there? Thanks, anyway.
D Hill:The loading ring is still in place and locking the eject mechanism. DO NOT FORCE IT IN ANYWAY WHATSOEVER!What you'll have to do is manually return the loading ring with your finger on top of the pulley. The pulley is the one to the top right of the drum assembly. There is a metal cover protecting the drum held on with two screws. As soon as you've removed this ,the loading ring pulley will be visible.I believe the return point is to pull the pulley towards you in a downward motion. When this is fully returned the mechanism will allow you to eject and you'll probably have a load of tape hanigng out as the most likey culprit for the fault in the first place is a worn/dirty idler/belt or motor for the reel drive.Hope it helps................Kevin
Alright, I was able to get the top plate of the Sanyo 4400 off (all I did was screw off the top plate on the loader, and that made it easy). Now, I need some general advice on removing tapes. I'd appreciate any help. Thanks.
im lookin for a girl to go out with suitable for me
Hi, everyone. I've got a Sanyo 4400 VCR, which was recently purchased and has been working fine. While playing a tape, I think I got a little impatient, pressed two or three buttons consecutively, and now I have a stuck tape inside. I tried unscrewing the top panel, but because the top-loading door now won't open, I can't remove the panel, unless I use considerable force, which I don't want to do. Anyone have any advice?
Eddie boy, check out ebay and all your local 2nd. hand stores. Good luck...
I'm desperate to buy a betamax video recorder to playback some old stuff all in Betamax format, doesn't have to be in mint condition, just so it plays tapes ok ! Could anybody point me in the right direction ???? or any retail outlet in London??? e-mail me please
