Sam.It would help if we new the MAKE, MODEL NO. and country of origin ( i.e PAL or NTSC)......................Kevin (UK)
Homer in UK or anyone else who can help. My Beta machine powers on, will rewind and fast forward, but when put in play mode, it runs for maybe 2 seconds, then trips off. Do you know what may be causing this? Thanks for anyone's help.
Olive,
The SLO1700 (PAL "printer" machine) does not include drop out compensation because its main function was as a recorder. That means they are not a good machine to use for Beta transfers to DVD.
Is it the same on the SLO1800?
cheers -Noel
Good to see the site back up finally. I've missed it, and you folks. :)
Ended up sending my SL-HF900 to Andy for repairs. Apparently the servo board has a bunch of stress cracks in it.. but it will be nice to have it back up and running again.
I'm a university student looking for a video recorder - and of course, I'd love a Beta! If anyone in the UK has a working Beta VCR they'd be willing to let go of reasonably cheaply please let me know. :-)
Yesterday I was nowhere here, hope it'll run smoothly........Dont you give up easily, pry.. I will give geart information!!!!

Hi.Nice to see the site back up again. The spammers e.t.c should all be prosecuted the amount of junk keeps coming my way.I even have a spam filter...................................Kevin

Best units in the US include the SL-2000 (or SL-2500) for mono tapes, SL-HF 300 for HiFI tapes (can handle playback of SuperBeta tapes as well), or an SL-T50ME for handling mono tapes from different countries.
An SLO-1800 would also make for a good playback deck as it is a durable industrial machine capable of handling most flavors of NYSC Beta.

Good to see PalChat is still up. Was wondering what happened...
Hello again Boby and Doc - its been a while.
Robert, you will have to first indicate where you live as the answer to your question depends on whether you are converting NTSC or PAL tapes. Also you need to determine if the tapes sound track is HiFi stereo, linear stereo or mono. (that will determine what machine you need to use to play them back.)
regards Noel
Hi, What do people recommend in the way of a good quality Betamax deck to look out for? I'm currently buying in decks and computer equipment to start off a freelancing digital restoration service. What would be ideal to go after for my purposes? Cheers, Rob.

Hey Olive,
I haven't been on for a while. Did the Palsite guys give the chatpage a bit of a spring clean or did it fall over. Last two times I tried to send a message I couldn't.

My friend wants to buy Beta blank tapes in Calgary, Canada. Where to find them?
Hey Bob,
Good to see you on this board. It's been awhile since I checked in here. You didn't reply to my last email so I don't know if you got it or not. Anyhow your VC-734E is at the top of my Betamax Museum page http://sphs.angeltowns.net/A_R_Wehrle/betamax.html and here's a picture of my buddy Derek helping me dismantle it http://sphs.angeltowns.net/images/2005/DerekworkingonBeta.jpg to make it a donor for my 739E. Unfortunately we determined that the same parts that needed replacing on the 39E were shot on the 34E as well. It was worth a shot though.
Thanks,Andy

hHELLO ?
Hello, I have come across a Sanyo VCR 7300 HiFi portable from storage. I have tested it and it works great. I was thinking of letting it go on ebay but I dont know if its worth the bother because I cannot find another example (outside of mrbetamax.com) and his are fully refurbished and mine isnt so thats no good for me. It is in perfect working order and clean (externally) with no blemishes that stand out. I'm not a collector so i just want some direction. Does anyone think this thing would sell? I cannot at this point locate the wired remote or manual, but they may only be misplaced.
Thanks
Hello,I have 25+ Star Trek Beta tapes in almost brand new condition I would like to sell. Are these of any interest? If so I can provide a complete title and price list. Thanks Lorry
I thought I'd try again on this problem on my two betas;Toshiba V9200T and Sony 5600. Since there are too many tracking lines in the images I figured there must be an internal tracking adjustment on these otherwise very good units, but I can't seem to locate them and was wondering if anyone here could point me in the right direction. Thank you...Carl

Hi There,
I live in South Africa and my parents have an old Betamax which hasn't worked for years. I think the problem has something to do with the eject mechanism, but I'm not too sure. I am interested in buying a second hand one. Are there any for sale out there? It is difficult to get it repaired in South Africa as nobody seems to know how to repair them and how to get parts. Please help! Thanks
Re: HFP-100. I use a HFP -200 with my 70, pretty much the same as the HFP-100 but it decodes stereo sound from the VCR tuner. I don't have a manual yet I may have some answers to your questions. First, this unit enables Hi-Fi recording as well as playback and no special tapes are required. The A/B switch should be set according to the recorder connected. A for Sony, B for Aiwa. Yours should be set on A. The MPX filter helps filter out the high frequency hiss you may hear when recording from a multiplexed stereo source (i.e. FM radio or MTS TV sound). Both these switches will not interfere with the recording capability of the machine.
When playing back a Hi-Fi tape, the VCR circuitry will detect the Hi-Fi signal on the tape and enable the audio amp to source from it. If, for some reason, this signal goes weak beyond recognition, the VCR will automatically switch to linear audio. This may take a second or two to happen, explaining the blanks you experiment.
Since you can play back pre-recorded tapes correctly, I would say the video heads in your 70 are either dirty or going bad. Good signal on the tape + weak pick-up from heads = fair enough signal to be played back correctly. Weak record on the tape + weak signal pick-up = the results you have right now.
Try having the heads cleaned up as a first step. If this doesn't correct the issue, or if it will then work only with brand new tapes, or if the problem comes back after a short while, then you will need a new head disc.
You have been able to correct the reel clutch issue with FW TRQ control. This is a wear issue. Wear is probably not limited to reel tables but should show its signs everywhere in the transport mechanism. Were any parts replaced in the past ? It may need a new pinch roller, your machine may struggle with rewinding, especially when approaching the beginning of tapes, calling for a new upper drum assembly. The window of correct tracking adjustment may grow narrower and linear sound may go weak or mute, indicating a worn out ACE head. And as is the case with yours, it may exhibit signs of head wear. This sounds sad, yet this is normal when a machine has already worked maybe twice the time of its intended lifespan.
I've experimented all these problems with my own 70 and got it definately fixed several years ago, in 1998. Back then I was able to get original parts for everything but the video head disc which was unavailable even then. I replaced them with a generic head disc. Doing so, I've lost half the picture quality of the original heads. I used this deck for about a year then put it in storage when I put my hands on a broken SL-HF1000 for a song. $75 CDN. Got it from a nun which brought it for repairs at the service outlet I used to work for and refused this estimate because "it was a beta and not worth it". Got laughed at for paying "that much"! I offered $50, she wanted $100, talked her down to $75. Original RMT-148 remote commander included. No missing covers or flaps. Then I put another about $600 to get that 1000 to work to original specs. I seldom use it but to play back already recorded tapes because I want it to stay fit as long as possible. I consider it as a piece of history.
I also own a SL-HF2000 which I got for free, also from a refused estimate to replace heads, which I replaced with heads out of a SL-HF900 that didn't make it through a flood (one of the boards is a waste with corrosion but mechanics intact). These heads are well worn as well, they get clogged real quickly most proably because they are worn. I heard that wear gets the heads to "scratch" tapes (esp. older ones) stronger, so they gather magnetic particles from the tape coating more easily. I have a SL-2710 with a shot power supply which is too bad because it was my preferred machine, it has the best timer recording setup ever conceived, even your great grandmother would find out how to program it. I have the remains of that shot 900, those of a SL-2700 that went through a destructive power surge that lifted all of the copper traces from the main board (the one under the mechanical chassis) which is bas as well because you'd have a hard time finding one that mint, aesthetically speaking. Also own a Sanyo VCR-4350 that would only need new belts and a new idler tire, yet I don't feel like fixing it. I once put my hands on a SL-7200 from an italian barber for $50 with a truckload of K -30 and K-60 tapes. Tried to clean its heads only to see them disintegrate before my eyes. That boat anchor quickly went to garbage. Kept all the tapes though for history purposes. They contain footage from 1980 olympics in Lake Placid, reports from Elvis death and some Julio Iglesias concerts. The contents certainly help to refrain from using these tapes at all !
All in all, I can say that the HFR70 with original heads ranks among the best with regards to picture quality and I certainly wish yours simply needs a cleanup. Matched up with a Hi-Fi processor, it gets the LED VU meters and that big BetaHi-Fi lamp that makes it look very sexy, in my humble opinion. Its only drawback would be that stupid 14 channel selection tuner, yet this is a non-issue: you most probably have a VHS stereo unit to feed it. As well, it is Macrovision immuned, that is not the case with the 1000.
Good luck, and greetings from Montreal
To the above with your HFR-70 with the HI-Fi problem That unit model number HFP-100 does not have a stereo decoder built in, which I believe you said you had, Model # HFP -200 has the stereo decoder built in and also your cable company has to be in stereo also because I have the same unitsHope this helps
RE: SL-HFR70/HFP-100I have the operating manual and service manual for the SL-HFR70 plus the operating manual for a HFP -200 (close?). I don't have time this evening, but will go through the setup tomorrow and get back with you. Also have a SL-HFR70 and HFP-100 - will check the actual physical setup as well.
Peace, Kevin
SONY HFP-100 BETA HI-FI PROCESSOR - HELP!!Does anyone happen to have a copy of the operators manual (or know where I can get one) for a Sony add-on HFP-100 Beta HI-FI processor? Or could you offer me some help with its operation. I am using it with a SL-HFR70 deck. It plays pre-recorded HI-FI tapes perfectly, but I cannot get it to record in HI-FI mode. The sound keeps cutting in and out. If I put the HI-FI button in Normal mode, the sound is fine, but just not in HI-FI. Will this unit allow HI-FI recording or is it just for playback? I may also not be using the correct settings. There is a switch on the back marked - TYPE A/B. I do not know what this is for. What does the MPX filter switch do? Do you need special tapes to record in HI-FI? Any help would be appreciated!!!
Re-Hi everyone. :) Question of the day:
Who's still doing ßeta repairs in the US? I've got what otherwise is a pretty decent SL-HF900, but it's started getting glitchy on me. I am sure it needs a good cleaning and alignment, but it is also suddenly deciding to go into capstan free run... it's already eaten one of my favorite tapes because I couldn't stop it fast enough. :(
E-mail's good (still).. please let me know if anyone is still doing the work, don't want to lose use of this machine.
TIA
Brenda Ann
Craig,
Most often that problem is due to increased friction of a tape going in "out of square" and straining the load mechanism. A plastic gear inside the left front edge cracks and pops off the shaft. If that is the case then take out the gear and get a suitably large washer but not so larfe it fouls the teeth, drill out the centre to the gears side step profile (6mm I think it is) then slide the washer on to the side of the gear and use glue to lock it on. This will stop the gear expanding on the D section drive shaft and coming off again when you reassemble the machine.
I hope you followed that - regards Noel
Richard,
Sorry, I didn't have the correct email address, take out "nospam" now and it should work. It is correct on the betaheaven.com website. Also give me details of the IC you are after. I have spares SLHF100 boards/parts.
regards Noel
Sony stereo SL-C40 - Problem: Machine wont accept a tape anymore. Makes all the noises like it is about to accept one, then finally refuses, when the " cassette inside" lamp illuminates. Press eject, then lamp goes out. Anyone with any ideas as to the minor problem? Thanks.
Hello everyone, I am new to this site but not new to the wonderful world of betamax. My first machine was a Zenith purchased in the early 80's - too far back to remember the model. Since then I have picked up the odd Sony/Sanyo/NEC machine whenever I found one that interested me. I have 50+ machines (multiplied like rabbits) plus the odd Betacam and portable unit. Also have an assortment of spare parts. Due to a prolonged and continuing illness, I must start selling some of my collection. Most are NTSC, but I do have 6 or 8 multi standard units as well. Let me know if you are looking for a particular unit or part - I may have it. Not everything will be for sale. I don't really want to part with my toys, but if I must I would rather they go to people who appreciate the Beta format. I also have over 1200 pre-recorded movies but all but a few are NTSC. For the serious collector, I have AG -200 and AG-300 auto loaders. Once again, I want to make it clear this isn't a sales pitch.
Peace, Kevin
SONY SL-HFR70 FIXED - THANKS HOMER. I did as you instructed - turned the potentiometer 1/8" counter-clockwise, and it works like a charm!! I put it in play mode & played a 3 hour tape, without any stoppage. Thank-you very much, from Canada.
Hello Noel. That is great!! Could you let me know the price of the 2 motors inc P&P to South Wales UK please??I also have a problem with a SLHF100UB. ...It will only record and playback in B&W, my repair chap told me that the IC on the bottom pcb is faulty (no fault with the hifi sound) He cannot get a replacement, so if you know anyone with this IC please let me know! It seems a shame to scrap the vcr as it is in great shape with the video heads outputting nearly 98% perfect. Sound on it is amazing!!Thanks.Richard.ps) I tried emailling you but I had a reply to say that the address was not active.
Hello - im a beta newbie so please be patient....I recently purchased a Sony C6 beta video to use to copy my 60 odd beta tapes to DVD. I've got all the stuff organised put in the first tape and the playback is pretty horrible - it looks like the tracking is all wrong and the sound seems to come and go. I've tried 3 other tapes with the same result so Im guessing its the machine. Does anyone know of any Beta repair people in London or else an idiots guide to checking the player?
Cheers
Dilmah
Re: SL-HFR70. Had the same exact problem with mine. It turned out that wear in the clutch mechanism of the takeup reel made it unable to wind the tape fast enough (esp. towards the end of tapes), therefore creating a tape slack between the capstan and takeup which triggered emergency stop. A quick fix is to increase Forward Torque, there is a potentiometer to adjust this, I can't remember where it is yet it is identified on the board so you should be able to find it. Hope this helps.
To Biggles:Yes a Sanyo M10 is perfect for making copies, make sure it's had a service though????and use the rear phono/BNC connections on the rear for higher quality...............Kevin
SONY SL-HFR70 - NEED HELP - This machine will just stop while in play or record mode. Sometimes it plays for 2-3 minutes & other times, only for a few seconds. When it running, it works perfectly. When it stops, you have to turn off the power to get it to work again for another few seconds. If you do not turn it off, it will not play at all, after initially stopping. FF & REW work perfectly - just PLAY & RECORD mode.
I would certainly appreciate it if anyone could help me out or even tell me if it is something that would be worth repairing or not. Thanks!!
Hello all.Do any of you have 2 capstan motors that are in good working order for Sony SL-C7UB? Will the capstan motor from a Sony c6 mk2 work in a c7? ??
Please let me know if anyone has these bit's, I have 2 c7 's which have just been serviced, but the bloke can't get hold of these motors. Thanks.Richard.
Mr. Betamax is selling a red Toshiba V-300 for only $195. I have no idea why he's selling it for so little. Don't know how many he has in stock, but it's a relatively inexpensive chance to see what one of his refurbished machines look like - real "refurbished," not tvvideoman-flipping-a-garage-sale-score "refurbished."
I realize that my harping on this is probably getting tiresome (I'm starting to annoy myself, in fact), but I am so sick of seeing SL-10's and VCR4020's with no remotes and missing doors being sold as "factory new" (with "test tape!") for $250-$300 by some creep who spends half his description dissing other sellers, when less sophisticated beta buyers can do so much better and maybe save a bunch of money with just a little more information.
I have an absolutely pristine Sony SL-HF 550 Superbeta with only 300 hrs usage listed on ebay. I would appreciate any feedback. It is US not PAL but I can share the link: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ih=014&item=330007670214&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMESE%3AIT&rd=1
Anyone tell me please the vtcm10, is it suitable for transfer to dvd, or should i get the slhf100as repaired. I damaged 2 of the poles while extracating the tape when it wouldnt eject. thanks.
Could anyone tell me where the internal tracking contol is found on my Toshiba V9200T and on my Sony 5600? These betas play quite well but have too many lines in the pics and I thought I might find and adjustment to clear them out. Thank you. Carl
Hello...I am looking for a MULTI-STANDARD BETA-MAX VCR in working order . Thanks and regards ROGER .
hi reelmaster,
i also have a sony c6 (mark ii) i leave it turned on at the mains but on standby as it is close to a window and i dont want it to get damp inside, i supose the best way is to leave it turned off incase of a power surge. i use it quite often too almost every night! gotta love the old films!
Had to get some RCA double adaptors before the sony jack died. You know when one little jiggle and you lose picture.Again, I am on the lookout for PAL original movies with covers.A handful every week or so is what I am thinking of
Can't totally trust EBAY, been burnt before
Bummer, nothing worse than to have your machine go kaput
I have my betamax, laserdisc and PS2 connected into the front of my precious sony and already killed the front AV input of TV. Really hate RCA cables. The BNC cables on my betamax are way better. Plug in and turn and they are locked in and easy to remove.Amazes me that the more expensive RCA cables actually do more damage to input jacks than the cheapo ones
Now to a storage question for beta expertsIs it a good idea to switch on my C6 or other beta machine and run a tape a couple times a week or just leave machine unplugged for a few weeksUsually I will run at least one tape a week, sometimes up to three
Have had friends leave their machine in storage for six months while in perfect working order, then plug back in and have either no power going to machine or tape path/belts broken
Hey! How valuable would General VG 200E betamax video be nowadays?
I have a Sony C7 which used to work perfectly. It was switched off for 2 weeks while I was on holiday and when switched on again, the displays flashed briefly, there was a tiny puff of smoke and it has been dead ever since. I know there are many possible reasons but does anyone know of any typical problems with this model, or what I should check? I'm no electrical expert so it could be something as simple as an internal fuse.
oh dear that is sad, at least the come here for a reason and most have a decent life at home, i love it when people come takig the piss but make themselfes look stupid
Because I'm so desparate I'm trawling a Betamax chatpage...
Email me!!

I have two betas with the same problem;tracking/picture jitter and was wondering if anyone could tell me just where there might be some adjustment screws on the units. The first one is a Toshiba V9200T and the other a Sony 5600. They both play well but I can't watch a movie or even record a show without this constant jittering along with some tracking lines in both. Thank you. Carl NYC

I have an SL-T50ME as well and while it has a nice slo-mo and still frame feature, one thing I do find is that the picture is a bit flickery (presumably) from the conversion system even showing NTSC movies. Sadly the flourescent display on mine has gone out - again. It had gone out some time last year for no apparent reason then decided top come back on later in the year. And now it's gone back out again.
Oh well, snakes on a plane - what are ya gonna do...
Hi to all Betaphiles, I'm looking for a carriage/gear assembly or 2 for a Sony C9, preferably the later brass geared version, thank you in anticipation.

Hi, Does anyone know where I might find a 100K tracking pot, Sony P/N 1-228-918-00 for a Sony SL-2300 ?
Thank you,George
I am going to grab a box old Betamax tapes from the late seventies or early eighties (not sure) when I am next at my old family home.
I want to transfer them to computer files. I know how to do that in principle - as I have done a VHS-computer transfer. Any tips? Including how the hell to get a Betamax player?
Thanks
olive_e_thomas@yahøø.cøm
The only portable HiFi unit in NTSC-land was the Sanyo VCR-7300. Aiwa produced an NTSC portable Beta (AV-50MU) that when hooked to a base station processor became a HiFi unit. I don't think it was capable of portable HiFi recording.
In answer to the question above, I don't believe there was ever a HiFi portable PAL beta unit available. If you wanting a good 12V portable beta unit, then I recommend the Sony SLF1 but it only has a linear mono sound track. You can see information about it under videos on PALSITE.

Untested. This guy lists this Magsonic beta vcr under a name like 'sonybetamax,' and still has in his past sales viewable auction pages for beta vcrs that he sold as 'tested.'
I ask myself how a person could be any stupider until I see that it actually has one bid.
