I have hundreds of 750 tapes and 8 or 9 sony Beta machines from the early models with wired remote (3) to the latest models of 2002 which I no longer use. I was going to donate to charity but I feel they would be wasted. Any suggestions on some who would take them and use them would be appreciated. I do not want to go through the hassle and cost of shipping many boxes. All machines work great.

Hello all, apologies if this message dosen't appear correctly, but I was wondering if anyone here could help me out. I am looking to buy just one :) betamax VCR, nothing special or fancy just a plain bog-standard beta machine. I did have one about 4 or 5 years ago in the past but made the mistake of taking it to the tip once it broke down x.x . I understand that there are sometimes some for sale on ebay, but some on ebay tend to be greedy and often mark their sale with words like "rare" and ask lots of money of which I am very wary about paying out. That picture stability problem you spoke of in an earlier post is usually due to aging capacitors in the capstan servo and drum servo board underneath the base of the Sony SLC7. It is also a problem in the C5 and C6 models. The capacitors dry out over time and lose capacity and also get high ESR or "series resistance".

The ones to replace are the light blue electrolytics. Make sure you get the polarity right on the replacements. I have covered this before in earlier chatpage posts. You may also need to reset the drum servo control potentiometer and the capstan servo control potentiometer because the capacors can vary in their value due to manufacturing tolerences.

Small solution with another of my 4 pieces of C7 -E

Power switch on..everthing was "green" eject worked aswell..play button indicated that it works..BUT! nothing happend..it didnt "pull out the tape".....it was shown that the whole sistem was STUCK..all it needed was a little help "around" with the finger first time..and som small doze of lubrication on some small wheels in the right upper corner....works pefect now.

To Ian C. Just do an eBay search for Gary Numan and you should get something. Years ago this netowrk called "MTV" (Music Television) ran these things called music videos (and ran them 24/7 no less - a novel concept someone ought to bring back) and in the 1990s had this show called "Amp" that I used to Betamax religiously. Was able to get a recording of "Cars" on one tape.

Hi Valle, welcome to the forum and don't worry, this site is exactly for asking that sort of questions!

I would suggest that you start with a serious clean of the whole tape path with Q-tips and surgical alcohol. Quite often this happens when a build-up of gunk over the years causes friction which makes the tape vibrate. If you hear a light squeel when you play a tape that is definately the problem. Make sure that all the posts are nice and clean without any black/brown residue.

If you play a lot of older tapes, have a look at the link to tape baking below. Despite someone taking the p*ss, it does really work. Many of the tapes fromm the late 1970's - early 1980's have this problem due to the way the emulsion was manufactured.

Well, unfortunately for us normal folks, the psychotic creep is back making idiotic posts under a brilliantly original name (doctor1024 of Vermont). Again, it is plain to see that the idiotic posts are via an AOL proxy server (cache-dtc-ae08.proxy.aol.com), which does not originate in Vermont. Of course, why this doofus is doing this and what this nutcase is trying to prove is beyond all of us, and he is way too cowardly to post under a real name or e-mail address. It’s hard to believe that keeping track of my eBay activity could fill someone’s empty life, but apparently it can.

The evils of downsizing means that I no longer have room for my Sanyo VTC 6500. It hasn't been used for some time and when I tried it recently I could get no Audio though Video is fine - I think it was all OK when I "mothballed" it. The owner's manual and remote are still with it. There is also a Beta head cleaner (Videoclear 3) 9 Memorex L830 tapes (used once) and 46 commercial tapes. If anyone is interested enough to make an offer I'll be glad to hear from them and let them have a list of the commercial tapes that I have.

does the motor only jam when draw is trying to open but closes without any problem - if so it will probably function O K if you give it a helping hand [pull] - I have one with this problem as well but I think mine has a draw allignment problem?

This "baker" seems to be descibing audio tapes. Have you had any results with shedding Betamax tape cassettes? Do you take the reels out of the shell, like a clam? Just kidding...the whole deal sounds half baked.

Doc, I'd say your tape is suffering of 'sticky tape syndrome', rather common with older tapes. Have a look here on how to fix that, I am using this technique to restore anything from 1/4" audio tapes to 1" video tapes.

Now getting to the real thing, I bought this outstanding and well directed Beta movie on eBay.

Might be able to help others who ran into the same problem as I did with their OLD beta movies.

I was getting ready for bed and popped in the old Cinderella tape.

Six minutes into the film, my heads clooged on my NEC betamax.

I uses my concoction of paint thinner and denatured alcohol and a secret ingrediant, cleaned the heads with a Qu tip.Put the Betamx completly back together, made a warm glass of milk and by golly 6 minutes later the heads glogged once again.

This went on for an hour, cleaning the heads , putting the Betamax completly back together and making sure that all the screws were back in the proper place. I nearly snapped off the door doing this. That would have been a catastrophe.

I decided to make a copy of this movie on a NEW blank tape that I purchased off ebay.

One problem was that the movie stated that there was a copy right and the film could not be reproduced. The second problem was that every 6 minutes the Betamax heads would clog.

I decided to pull out all the stops and brought in a bunch of Betamax from the piles in the back room and see if one would play the tape wihout clogging the heads. I did this for hours.

Half the Betamax I pulled from the old pile didnt work (Guess they need a tune-up) and the best I could get was 7 minutes 6 seconds on my SL-HF900 that I got for a song from the training camp of the Football Cleveland Browns.

I decided to break the law and copy the tape (HEE HEE).

My kid suggested that I not put the Betamax back together with all screws and clips as I had been doing and to just leave it open. This way you I could save a lot of time. What a great idea!! the kid is a chip off the old block.

Took me a total of 18 hours and 36 minutes to achieve the Cinderella copy tape. Now I have a procedure in the event that my 1500 + beta collection start to glog heads.

With astonishing I discovered " A room with a view " in NTSC/beta.Produced in 1992 (!). I always thought, the last beta movies were produced in late 90, early 91. Does anyone knows other movies released in 1992 or even later in the USA ?

I agree with Noel, but almost every Toshiba develops this failure due to rotting of the rubber belt between the capstan motor and capstan. While you are waiting for the proper replacement flat belt, you can simply use an appropriately sized rubber band.

I don't actually know that model of machine but what you describe sounds like a faulty capstan motor which controls tape speed in Play and record. Check first if the capstan pin drive itself is moving. If not then look for a faulty belt or capstan motor. If it is moving then check that the capstan roller which is supposed to hold the tape against the capstan in play or record mode is doing so.

I have a Toshiba beta model V9200T that must have had a traumatic episode since one minute it was working fine, the next it stopped playing. It will fast forward and rewind normally but if I hit play it is as if I hit pause. The tape is in gear because I can see the image actually paused on the screen if I do hit pause. I have just one I think it is an SLF-100 sony beta HI Fi. Working wellat the moment. Due to the nature of my little busy business I collect cameras of all sorts digital to Analogue as well as projectors etc.My oldest projector 1937 wonderful machinary. Actually, I am in Melbourne Australia, I wonder where you are.

Three things spring to mind regarding your problem.

1/ The original recording could have been made on a machine where the tuner was experiencing strange radio frequency propagation reception conditions caused by certain weather conditions where a very distant TV station is giving you co-channel intereference. (Called skip or ducting by radio amateurs) The effect is possible because the sound is amplitude modulated onto the television carrier and other signals on the same frequency even 40dB below the wanted signal can start to cause interference. The out of sync interference mentioned at 3/ may also be evident along with an effect called venetian blinds where the scan lines seem to combine then move apart.

2/ The tape was recorded a long time ago and stored for many years without use. Print through of the magnet energy between tape layers can occur giving such an effect when eventually played back.

3/ The machine it was recorded on may have had a faulty erase head and while the new recording will to some extent over-ride an original recording, the original will remain as a background signal. In such cases when the pictures are out of syncronism, the Horizontal balnking interval will appear across the screen as a large grey band in the background and slowly move up or down.

Another thing that causes horizontal lines across the screen is tape damage present as wringles or grooves on the tape surface. this can cause an increase in head to tape gap and the signal basically gets noisy in one or more horizontal lines. You can lift the cases protective flap and inspect the tape surface under a bright light to see if it is damaged.

I offer a Betamax to DVD conversion in Australia. Of late I have found a few tapesthat on replay seem to have lines left to right across screen rather like the old horizontal tear hold problem on old TVs. Adjusting tracking on any of my 2 machines does not help. A signal is there as I can see movement and sound can also be heard. Both tapes came from betamax cam corders. Any help appreciated.

There are a number of brands of wet or dry cleaners. The Sony one is model L-25CL and is the dry type cleaner. I would not run it more often than is necessary because I believe they are abrasive and will wear the heads with too much use.

Thanks for the model info. I don't have access to the NTSC models but the PAL Toshiba models V-31AS and V-33AS have the hall sensors in their drum motors. If you get a good source for the load gears used in the Sony SLC9ES or the NTSC equivalent let me know. I am also hunting service manual for the SL800ME multisystem unit and the SLO 420P which I am told is similar to one of your NTSC models. I am after information about changes to the SS11 control board to permit the addition of the extra blue controller port.

Noel, The Toshiba beta's I get my Hall Effect switches from are VM411 and VM415 ( ntsc) and they're very easy to remove.I never got any out of the Sony capstan motor-- I'll have to give that a look.Thanks a lot!!

Yes Beta cleaning tapes are still in production. Remember that Sony still makes and sells Betacam equipment which need cleaning tapes that just so happen to fit nicely in Betamax equipment.

Mind you that you can clean heads just as effectively by loading and playing a otherwise unwanted reel of tape and holding it in pause for a few minutes till the heads unclog themselves.

I've Just recently got a Sony Trinicon HVC 2000P video camera (from ebay). Now it doesnt have a tape bay in in and has a lead with a connector i dont recognise. Now that was a helpful hint about the hall effect sensors. I just happened to have one sitting on the test bench having swapped an assembly. The sensors are a bugger to get out on that board though. Another source is from the Sony capstan motors. They use two and sometimes three such as in the SLC9. The Sony service manuals do not have a circuit diagram for the drum motor board but if you check out the circuit diagram for the capstan motor of a Sony SLHF150 then it is identical to the drum circuit except for the addition of the Fg & Fp connections/circuitry.

Hi Everyone! Finally got my first SL-Hf-300 with the always missing intact!!! I have three other 300's and none of them have the front door.The 300 and 400 series are some of my favorite Betas because they'll play just about any tape clear no matter what it was recorded on. On another subject, if anyone has trouble finding a Hall effect sensor for their Sony Beta then look no further than a Toshiba Beta. Toshiba's use three of these sensors exacly like Sony's in their drum motors . The only difference is the leads are a little shorter and will need to be bent a little to go through the small circuit bd. I never had much luck cleaning the moisture laddened glue off the Sony sensor and getting the motor to run again. I've had 100% sucess using the toshiba sensors and since Toshiba Betas are pretty easy to come by it's a good and cheap way to get that Sony runnin again. Hope this helps someone!

Noel:Thanks for that.I was reffering to the head quality.I always try all recordings on all my various Sanyo machines and pre-recorded known good tapes for verification to a well set up /recording/playback deck.The thing with idlers though is it's really only the rubber tyes that get worn not all the other bits( a stretched spring maybe).Why don't they just sell the tyres on their own?I still have all the ones i've removed and there are a LOT.Sometimes you can gently clean the surface if the rubber is'nt cracked and not hard and it's as good as new.It certainly does the job to full torque ( i don't recommend turning them inside out though it's far to shiny).Happily with a Sanyo Beta it's usually the rubber that get's a bit tired.....The odd motor here and there.Somtimes a leaky capacitor...............Kevin

You can still get belt kits in Australia. Repairers of machines are getting out of the business so I guess it will be harder for suppliers to justify keeping stock in future. On the comment of record and playback using same machine, of course that does not prove alignment with other machines but yes it's a good quick check.

We in "PAL land" (it is PALSITE after all)don't have manuals for those NTSC machines. You might do better on an American based beta site.

Yes I have picked up some goodies along the way. A mixture of persistance and luck. The guage was actually from where I used to work. They originally got a C7 and needed to change the heads at some time. I have test tapes (new from Sony) backtension meters, spring guages, the head meter, and I made my own multitest tape with a mint SLO1700 because you get both types of stereo sound using that machine. Having a decent noise and distortion meter and 100MHz oscilloscope doesn't hurt either.

If your lucky your problem is just dirty heads. Use a cleaning tape or get a professional to manually clean the heads for you. If your not lucky the video heads may have been damaged.

I have been using the sony head meter on all types of machines to check head wear. You can get a reading on all ranges and do a comparison with new or at least a machine with very good heads. You still have to check that the head surface is not chipped or scratched because it only checks the inductance.

The Toshibas seem quite bad on head wear and also the later front load Sony's but I have also had quite a few Sanyo M10 and M20 machines with worn heads also. As you say, it depends what sort of treatment the Sanyos have suffered. Apart from head wear savings due to unthreading the tape from the heads during FFWD and REW I suspect they may be saved by the failure of rubber drive belts which then got them put aside in storage. If you do go after a head meter, dont pay more than about thirty pounds. I see someone in UK asking ridiculous amounts for them.

Noel:As you probably guessed i've never had to use one with a Sanyo.All the machines i've seen are excellent in that area.A picture does speak a thousand words.Actually i was given a NX100 for a service and the heads were going on that ( the usual black fleks to the right of bright objects and doubly worse on it's own recordings).Surprising that as this was the last one Sanyo made in the UK and i can only assume poor tapes or overuse of the dreaded head cleaner ( Mr Abrasive)was the culprit.I have heard of the said machine though and would be interested to know myself.One day it might be usefull.Feel free to enquire anytime.............Kevin

NoelI have the service manual for this model and most Sanyos.It could be the tracking control.They can come apart inside and are repaireable.Result .no adjustment when turning either way.I have also come across a couple of capstan motors that don't spin quite feely, they drag slightly on one side.This gives slight wow on playback and can cause tape damage in reverse picture search.Failing that it's probably a capacitor or servo chip.Give us a shout with exactly what is going on ...................Kevin

Thanks for the feedback. I have also seen a toshiba rebadged as a General. WE all have our preferences as to what machines we like I guess. I like the complicated Sony.

I would like to get some service information on the Sanyo M30. It has servo lock problems.

Harold, I reckon you should keep that machine for spares and get another off eBay. The power supply and the reel motors are common problems in 950s.

Tes we can do without certain rubbish on this site, but no activity is bad too.

I have, in my mind, at last come to terms with the fact that, after 10 years, the loss of my beloved HF950SLV is a certainty. It needs new heads and a tuning card. It can be repaired at a cost of £1300. Even were I extremely wealthy, common sense would preclude me from spending such a vulgar amount of money on a 20 year old machine.Consequently I now own a machine which is perfect in all but the afore mentioned faults.Anybody interested in purchasing the 'remains' is welcome to contact me. Hi Noel.I'm always servicing and repairing Sanyo Beta's here in the UK.It's my hobby ( one of them ) and i LOVE IT.If anyone looking here has anyone of the following Sanyo Beta's VTC 5000, 5150,6500,M10,M20,M30 ,M40 and NX100 that needs a overhaul or ANY advice 'give us a shout'.I love to help out when i can and have given a lot of smiles to a lot of appreciate Beta owners.I have quite a lot of experience with said models and am always on the lookout for any Infr red remote controls or front tuning doors for said models (broken or not) that always seem to have broken (roughly handled?) hinges.I've jus finished overhauling a sanyo 5000 where a 'repair shop' had obviously had the overloaded mains capacitor fault ,probably due to a 'spiky mains' and had'nt bothered to replace it!!!!!!!!!!!!!! needless to say it was used for a while like this and caused damage to the voltage regulator, that i've now replaced. the symptom was a lighlty glowing channel indicator and 'on' led when in 'standby mode'.I have since encountered 2 Sanyo M30's with these capacitors removed and not replaced and one had damaged the tuner/tracking section board.I have now replaced these mains filter capacitors with the recommended 0.0047 @ 350vlts.the origionals were 0.1 @ 250vlts.It never ceases to amaze me how many of these 'approved' repair agents due shockingly dangerous 'repairs' and wrongly diagnose faults!!!!I won't go into that here though.That's why i do what i do , because i don't cut corners and i'm pretty thorough too.I love the Sanyo Beta's.In my opinion well put together , very easy to diagnose and a lot longer lasting than Sony...................YES that is a common trait.From what i've seen anyways.Whay wear Sony Beta's always so OVER COMPLICATED.It certainly did'nt help with their relibility /longevity did it.There biggest issue with me though was the 'always laced up feature'yes it did provide 'peep search' but at what price? It definetley did'nt help with the video/audio head/upper drum wear did it?!Well that's enough for me for today.I thought i'd give you Beta emthusiasts something to mull over.Noel.It HAS been quiet around here...........maybe that's not always a bad thing :).............................Kevin

Re; Sony SLO-420P

Just read your other posting - I think you will find the SLO-420 was an NTSC industrial/commercial duplicating machine Sony produced for the American market - the "P"on the end obviously indicates it as a PAL version of this machine which I believe was not available for the Australian market, so it was probably specially ordered /imported in or brought in as someones personal vcr from Europe ?

You will probably obtain some spec's/detail's on the machine on some of the U.S. link's on this site

it would be interesting to see what history you can dig up on this model my reasoning is because I also have amoungst my collection a Titan but mine is a VCR 2000 and it was definatly produced by SANYO and is a toploader based on the VTC5000 / 5005 design - although the front panel is very different the rest of the external of the vcr [including the BETACORD inscription] is almost identical!

This is one vcr I have not got round to playing with yet but I should imaginne the internals to be all Sanyo - I'll let you know if they aren't!

What is interesting though is the styling changes that introduced a slight slope to the bottom edge of the front panel. This pre-emted the later V51 model. I am repairing this unit for the owner and he thinks he may be able to hunt up the original sales information from his father. Is anyone else doing any beta stuff out there?

Sure is quiet these days. Then again, the system seems to chuck you out first time around. I wonder if anyone out there has information (sales brochures or otherwise) on the Sony SLO-420P VCR. It is a printer meaning that it was designed to make video library tapes. It does not have a tuner and is based on the SLC9 design. Interestingly, it has edit controller connections at the back to mate it with other machines like the UMAT and Hi8 machines. I have just read Christiana Camisotti's message on the website. I have recently had dealings with her Father regarding a failed HF 950 of mine. I heartily confirm her description of her Father's integrity (by the way, I'm no relation) and further endorse his most lucid advice. His diagnosis that my machine needs new heads and a replacement tuning card, the cost of which sent me scurrying, confirmed what I had feared myself.Heartily recommended.

2. My posts are occasional, are not nonsensical rants, are not abusive, and are never about anything related to what I might have bought on eBay. His posts clearly speak for themselves and indicate the abnormal nature of their disturbed author.

3. I have respect for the others on this site. As Grace has pointed out, this nutjob often copy/pastes the text from others and then twists it to fit his own autism. The recent rant regarding the Sanyo 7250 I bought on eBay is a good example, because this item has not even arrived. I completely agree with Grace that it is an unfortunate coincidence that he has found his way to the Beta Palsite.

4. My e-mail address is real. No doubt he will copy/paste it, so I will answer anyone who may wonder if it was really me who posted something, and of course I would be happy to discuss Beta issues as well.

Like most everyone in this community, I love Beta and I have respect for this site and the good people who share this worthwhile interest. Firstly, I bought a while ago a Sony SL-HF900 for $49.99 (Cleveland Browns Football Training Camp) on the old ebay that arrived in perfect shape.

I also bought This universal remote on eBay for this excellent HF-900 Betamax. On the plus side, the seller told me that it was a COMBO, infrared and wired in one.

I spent a pretty penny and sure that others have bought this COMBO Wire and Infrared in one?

I thought that I was taken, and also thought that after the small argument I had with Mr Betamax that our courgial relationship was over.

I contacted him about this COMBO Wire and Infrared universal shuttle remote and asked if he had any ideas ????.

By Golly he emailed me and said he just HAPPENS to have the very rare adapter kit (NOS) and would be willing to part with this for $125.00 with no charge for delivery.

I emailed him and said that I would send the money via PayPal immediately and did.

So, head on over to Mr.Betamax for all your Beta needs. He was a semi-aloof creep at one time, but I think he has warmed up recently. His units are as factory new as you can get. Correct remotes, original boxes, manuals, doors the whole shebang. His prices are reasonable too. Same goes for ziggi. I emailed him and he seemed quite nice only he wasn't aware of the adapter kit. We also discussed some of his Mitsubishi Super VHS players. Might have an in on getting one cheap.
